Sharapova supports special Grand Slam seeding for old rival Serena

Maria Sharapova says she supports a Grand Slam seeding for longtime rival Serena Williams as the American tries to rebuild her career after giving birth nine months ago.

The Russian, who reached the semi-finals of the Italian Open on Friday with a 6-7 (6/8), 6-4, 7-5 defeat of reigning Roland Garros winner Jelena Ostapenko, showed a noticeably softer attitude towards the 36-year-old Williams with whom she has often endured a bitter, public rivalry.

Wimbledon officials are currently debating whether or not to award a wild card to the former world number one American who has won the grasscourt major seven times but is currently ranked 454th after playing only four tour matches since winning the Australian Open in 2017.

“It’s a tough call, I would like to see that change,” Sharapova, 31, said. “I think that would be nice.”

The five-time Grand Slam winner said it took “such an incredible effort” for Williams to return to the court after pregnancy.

“For a woman to come back on tour, having a child (is great).

“It’s just another whole dimension to the travel, to the experiences, to the emotions, to the physicality of every single day.”

The Russian added: “Tennis is such a selfish sport. But I think when there’s a child in your life, you lose a little bit of that because there’s something that’s so much more important.”

Williams stands an overwhelming 19-2 in her head-to-head series against Sharapova with the Russian’s only two victories coming in 2004.

I’ll never hate Chelsea fans, says Mourinho

I’ll never hate Chelsea fans, says Mourinho

sports May 19, 2018 06:32

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has told Chelsea fans he will never hate them no matter how much abuse he receives during Saturday’s FA Cup final.

Mourinho remains the most successful boss in Chelsea’s history after winning three Premier League titles, as well as the three League Cups and one FA Cup, during his two spells with the west London club.

But some Chelsea supporters no longer show the same gratitude and adulation to Mourinho as they did when he won the team’s first English title for 50 years in 2005.

Mourinho angered Blues fans by joining their rivals United and the tension boiled over when Chelsea won a fiery FA Cup quarter-final between the sides at Stamford Bridge last season.

Mourinho, twice sacked by Chelsea, was branded a “Judas” by supporters who sang “you’re not special any more”, to which the Portuguese coach responded by saying “Judas is still number one” in a reminder to his tormentors of how successful he had been with their club.

Ahead of this weekend’s clash between his current and former teams at Wembley, Mourinho made it clear he wouldn’t be drawn into more verbal sparring because he still respects the fans who stuck by him when he was on the verge of being axed by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich.

“The only thing I say in relation to Chelsea supporters is since my first day in 2004 until my last day when I was sacked a couple of years ago they were with me unconditionally,” Mourinho said.

“They were with me every day, even on the two days I was sacked. That I will never forget.

“They did what I think great supporters do, they support their manager unconditionally until the last day.

“I remember when we played Dynamo Kiev, a Champions League match when people were already talking about me being sacked.

“I remember the whole stadium standing and singing for me. That was in a difficult moment when the results were not good.

“If they hate me, if they dislike me, if they don’t respect me, that is something I can’t control.

“But you dont have any (negative) quotes from me about Chelsea supporters, not one word.”

– Buried the hatchet –

After feuding with Chelsea boss Antonio Conte for much of this season, Mourinho also revealed this week that he has buried the hatchet with the Italian.

But, with Conte reportedly set to leave Chelsea at the end of the season after falling out with the club’s hierarchy, Mourinho is intent of giving his successor a painful end to the season by leading United to a record-equalling 13th FA Cup.

Mourinho doesn’t believe the speculation surrounding Conte will prove a distraction for Chelsea, but he admitted to being intrigued to see if reports linking former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique to the Blues prove correct.

“Honestly I still don’t know what Antonio’s situation is because I didn’t read or listen to him saying he’s leaving,” Mourinho said.

“I have no information that it’s Antonio’s last match.

“Of course sometimes I listen to what is written or people saying Antonio is leaving, Luis Enrique is coming, the other is coming.

“You ask if I am interested. I am curious. But in relation to the match if it is his last, it won’t change his approach or his team’s approach.”

Mourinho confirmed that David De Gea will start in goal for United because his understudy Sergio Romero isn’t sharp enough after an injury lay-off.

Romero had played in four of United’s five FA Cup matches this season and was selected ahead of De Gea for the Europa League final win over Ajax last season.

If Mourinho leaves Wembley with the trophy, it will be his 13th cup final success in 15 attempts.

“The only thing I can say is I like to play the matches. That is how you should approach finals,” he said.

“You shouldn’t go less than very happy. That is the one thing present in all my finals over all these years.”

Nadal, Djokovic to meet for 51st time in Rome

sports May 19, 2018 06:27

Novak Djokovic set up an Italian Open semi-final blockbuster against old rival Rafael Nadal after both former world number one players battled back in thrilling last-eight clashes on Friday.

The Serb fought back against Kei Nishikori to earn a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 win while top seed Nadal continued his clay court domination with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Italy’s Fabio Fognini.

Djokovic, seeded 11th after his elbow injury problems, beat Japan’s top player for the 12th time in succession.

“It was a fantastic match, we went toe-to-toe all the way to last shot. He started, he was flawless from both ends,” said Djokovic who will face Nadal for the 51st time, holding a narrow 26-24 advantage.

Nadal beat Djokovic in their last meeting in May in 2017 in a Madrid semi-final and the Serb will be out for revenge after winning seven in a row prior to that.

“We will see tomorrow. I’ve not played so many matches in the last six months,” said Djokovic whose last semi-final spot was in Eastbourne on the eve of Wimbledon in 2017.

“Physically, I’m OK. I just need some rest now and then go out and give it everything I’ve got.”

Second-ranked Nadal needs to lift an eighth career title at the Foro Italico on Sunday to return to the top of the rankings after losing that position to Roger Federer last week.

Nadal dropped the opening set to Fognini in an hour but regrouped effortlessly as he swept past the Italian in the one-sided second and third sets.

“I’m not used to playing so early,” Nadal said of his midday start. “But I’m very happy to be in the semi-finals.

“This was a very important win for me today.”

Nadal also beat Fognini in Rome in 2013 in their first ever meeting. This was his 11th victory in 14 meetings with the 21st-ranked Italian, and sixth in a row.

Nadal is working towards Roland Garros, where he will aim for an unprecedented 11th title.

“My clay court season has been, I think, fantastic. It will be much better if I finish here with another title,” added the 16-time Grand Slam winner.

It was the first time in four years that Nadal managed to win his quarter-final tie in Rome.

Marin Cilic beat Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3, 6-3 to reach the Rome semi-finals for the first time where he will face either second seed Alexander Zverev, the Madrid champion last weekend, or David Goffin.

Maria Sharapova fired a French Open warning with an epic three-hour win over Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko to reach the women’s semi-finals.

Former world number one and five-time Grand Slam winner Sharapova found herself in a dogfight with her Latvian opponent.

Playing her fourth match in as many days, Sharapova needed three hours, 10 minutes to win a gruelling struggle, eventually triumphing 6-7 (6/8), 6-4, 7-5.

For Sharapova, now the world number 40, it was arguably her best victory since her return from a 15-month doping ban last year.

“It was nice to close things down in that way after a long match,” three-time Rome champion Sharapova said. “I didn’t have a great first set, I kept going. I like to smile about it.

“It’s always nice to have a battle with a few ups and downs and finish strong to get through a match like this against a really high-quality opponent.

She added: “I appreciate this new chapter of my career, I still have lots of passion for the sport and for this life. I realise I’m towards the end of my career so I appreciate it.”

Sharapova rode a roller-coaster in her marathon win, working her way from 4-1 down in the first set only to drop it in a tiebreaker after 80 minutes.

She regained her momentum to win the second set but it was tough in the third when she let a 5-2 lead get away.

With Sharapova serving for victory, Ostapenko secured a break for 4-5 thanks to a ninth Sharapova double-fault which yielded a break point.

The sixth seed then saved two Sharapova match points to level 5-5 before the Russian claimed victory two games later with a final break in a match marred by 21 cumulative double-faults and a dozen breaks of serve.

Sharapova will next face world number one Simona Halep who made sure of the top seeding at Roland Garros with a 6-2, 6-3 win over France’s Caroline Garcia.

Fourth seed Elina Svitolina recovered from a slow start to defeat former number one Angelique Kerber of Germany 6-4, 6-4.

Defending champion Svitolina will next face Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit who earned an upset over second seed Caroline Wozniacki, 6-3, 6-1.

Henan – Natipong Srithong of Thailand shot a second round five-under-par 67 to grab a share of the halfway lead at the US$300,000 Asia-Pacific Classic on Friday.

The one-time Asian Tour champion had a near flawless round, carding six birdies against a lone bogey to sign for his second consecutive 67 at the St Andrews Golf Club in Henan, China.

“I’m very happy with my tournament so far. I haven’t been playing very well this year as I missed a lot of cuts. But after these two rounds in China, my confidence is coming back,” said the laws student of Thammasat University.

“This week, I am working hard on my driver as well as three-wood shots off the tee and keeping the ball on the fairway. I was driving very badly previously, but it has changed for the better this week! You have to keep off the rough here, otherwise, you may have problems keeping the ball on the green. My putting has also been very good this week,” added winner of the Asian Tour title in Manila three years ago.

“I made a birdie from about 25-feet away on my last hole yesterday. Today, the good thing was that I didn’t have to make such long putts for birdies as my approach shots were good. I’ll keep to my same plan for Saturday and Sunday, that is, to keep the ball on the fairway,” added the 24-year-old Thai.

John Catlin of the United States shared the lead with Natipong on a 10-under-par 134 total. The 27-year-old continued his outstanding run of form as he carded a 66 at the tournament, which is co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and the China Golf Association (CGA).

Catlin, who has recently finished in the top-10 in two consecutive Asian Tour tournaments, blemished his scorecard with a bogey on hole one but recovered brilliantly with an eagle on the following hole.

American Charlie Saxon displayed the form that led to two titles on the China Golf Tour as he returned with a bogey-free 66. He fought through a stomach ache to card four birdies and an eagle.

Adam Blyth of Australia began his second round unceremoniously but ended the day with a birdie blitz. Blyth, who started on tee 10, made his first birdie after the turn on the second hole then made five consecutive birdies from holes five to nine to finish with a 66.

Xiao Bowen of China made a personal breakthrough by making the cut on the Asian Tour for the first time in 2018. He won on home soil last year in Xiamen and had put himself in contention with a 68 for a 138 total. Xiao is just four shots off the lead.

Ten dead in Texas school shooting, student arrested

Santa Fe, United States

Ten people, mostly students, were killed when a teenage classmate armed with a shotgun and a revolver opened fire in a Texas high school Friday, the latest deadly school shooting to hit the United States.

The gunman, arrested on murder charges, was identified as Dimitrios Pagourtzis, a 17-year-old junior at Santa Fe High School. He is being held on capital murder charges, meaning he could face the death penalty.

Governor Greg Abbott said 10 people died and another 10 were wounded in “one of the most heinous attacks that we’ve ever seen in the history of Texas schools.”

“Nothing can prepare a parent for the loss of a child,” Abbott told reporters in Santa Fe, located about 30 miles (50 kilometers) southeast of Houston.

Abbott said the gunman apparently carried out the attack with a shotgun and a .38 revolver that were legally owned by his father.

The Houston Chronicle said Pagourtzis also threw pipe bombs into a classroom at the start of the school day.

But with gun reform a divisive issue in the United States, Abbott focused on the need to better address mental health concerns and to arm schools, rather than call for limits on the proliferation of weapons.

At dusk, hundreds of people, including many children, turned out for a candlelight vigil as the community sought to cope with the tragedy. People prayed and sang “Amazing Grace,” tears streaming down some faces. There were hugs, and dogs providing emotional support.

Abbott said searches were being conducted at two residences and “explosive devices” had been found, including a “CO2 device” and a Molotov cocktail.

He said journal entries by the gunman suggested he wanted to commit suicide but “he gave himself up.”

Abbott said there were no “warning signs” about the suspect, who had no criminal history, although he did post a picture on his Facebook page of a T-shirt with the words “Born to Kill” on it.

Law enforcement authorities were questioning two “people of interest,” the governor said. One may have “certain information,” he said, and the other had some “suspicious reactions.”

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said most victims were students.

“Officers inside encountered a bloody mess in the school,” a law enforcement official told the Houston Chronicle.

Area hospitals said two victims were in critical condition. One of the wounded was a police officer, John Barnes, who engaged the gunman and was shot in the elbow, officials said.

‘I shouldn’t be going through this’

The shooting was the latest in what has become an all-too-familiar situation in American schools, where gun violence has become a part of everyday life, part of a broader toll taken by firearms which are responsible for more than 30,000 gun-related deaths annually in the US.

“My friend got shot in the art hall,” weeping student Dakota Shrader told reporters.

“I shouldn’t be going through this,” Shrader said as her mother comforted her. “It’s my school. This is my daily life. I feel scared to even go back.”

Shrader said fire alarms went off “and everybody just started running outside.

“And the next thing you know everybody looks and you hear ‘boom, boom, boom’ and I just ran as fast as I could to the nearest forest so I could hide and I called my mom.”

Earlier this year, 17 people were killed at Marjory Douglas Stoneman High School in Parkland, Florida, — a massacre that prompted survivors to launch a grassroots campaign against gun violence that led to the largest gun reform rallies in nearly two decades.

Friday’s was the second mass shooting in Texas in six months.

Twenty-six people were killed in a Texas church in November 2017 by a 26-year-old Air Force veteran.

Abbott, the Texas governor, said he would convene roundtable discussions to look into ways of preventing such mass shootings in the future.

President Donald Trump expressed “sadness and heartbreak” over the shooting and ordered US flags to fly at half-staff for the next few days.

“This has been going on too long in our country,” Trump said, speaking at an event on prison reform at the White House. “We’re with you in this tragic hour.”

Trump, who has previously shied away from gun control and proposed arming teachers, said he was “determined to do everything in our power to protect our students, secure our schools and to keep weapons out of the hands of those who pose a threat to themselves and to others.”

‘Get out of here’

The shooting erupted before 8:00 am, as the first classes of the day were starting.

“It was pretty quiet for a few seconds, and then we just hear someone shoot a gun, and just a ‘pow-pow-pow,'” student Hunter Mead, 14, told AFP.

“And everyone just kind of freaked out. You know, everyone has the instinct, ‘Just go, get out of here.'”

The Santa Fe shooting came three months after the Florida massacre led to mass protests and their call of “Never again!”.

“We are fighting for you,” tweeted David Hogg, a Stoneman Douglas student who has emerged as a leader of the gun control campaign.

Another Stoneman Douglas student, Delaney Tarr, added: “We cannot let this continue to be the norm. We cannot.”

Former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton urged lawmakers to take action.

“Every day that we fail to act on gun violence, we are failing our children,” Clinton said.

More than 100 feared dead in Cuba airliner crash

Havana

A Cuban state airways plane with 110 passengers and crew on board crashed shortly after taking off from Havana Friday, leaving a mass of twisted and smoldering fuselage, as the country’s president warned many people were feared dead.

Cuban state media reported that three people had been pulled alive from the mangled wreckage and were in critical condition in hospital.

There was no other official mention of survivors from a nearly 40-year-old Boeing 737 operated by Cubana de Aviacion, which crashed into a field close to a wooded area near Havana’s Jose Marti airport, sending a thick column of acrid smoke into the air.

The 110 aboard included six Mexican crew, said Aerolineas Damojh, the Mexican-based company that leased the plane to the Cuban carrier.

The plane — carrying 104 passengers — was almost completely destroyed in the crash and subsequent fire, which was put out by firefighters who raced to the scene along with a fleet of ambulances.

Emergency personnel combed through the wreckage, lending little hope that there could be other survivors.

“Three passengers managed to survive the accident. They are in a critical condition. They are already in hospital,” the state newspaper Granma said.

What appeared to be one of the wings of the plane was wedged among scorched tree trunks, but the main fuselage was almost entirely destroyed.

Cuba’s President Miguel Diaz-Canel, who went to visit the scene, told AFP there was a large number of casualties.

“There has been an unfortunate aviation accident. The news is not very promising — it seems that there is a high number of victims,” Diaz-Canel said.

The president said nine crew members were believed to have been on board, but he was unsure if they had been included in the total of 104 passengers.

The 58-year-old president, who succeeded Raul Castro as the island’s leader only last month, appeared aghast as he surveyed the recovery efforts, wearing a short-sleeved green shirt and surrounded by officials.

In a statement later, the president said an investigation into the cause of the accident was underway.

“The bodies are being identified. The ministry of transport has set up a commission to investigate the facts. We will gather all the relevant information and we will communicate that to the people as soon as we will get it,” he said.

Mexico’s government said the plane was built in 1979 and said it had a crew of five Mexicans — the pilot, co-pilot, and three flight attendants.

However, in a later statement, Aerolineas Damojh said a maintenance technician was also on board.

Aerolineas Damojh, also known as Global Air, is a charter company formed in 1990 that had a fleet of three planes.

Mexico’s ministry of communications and transportation said the plane had passed inspections in November last year.

– ‘It made a turn, and went down’-

Airport sources said the plane took off at 12:08 pm (1608 GMT) heading for the eastern city of Holguin, 670 kilometers (about 415 miles) away.

From the supermarket where he works near the airport, Jose Luis, 49, said he could see the plane taking off before it banked and plunged to the ground.

“I saw it taking off. All of a sudden, it made a turn, and went down. We were all amazed,” he said.

Images from Cuban television showed rescue workers at the scene removing what appeared to be a survivor on a stretcher as rain began to fall.

Prior to Friday’s crash, Cuba’s most recent air accident occurred in April, 2017. Eight military personnel died when a Russian-made AN-26 transport aircraft went down in western Cuba.

The country’s last major airline disaster was in November 2010 when a Cuban Aerocaribbean airliner crashed while on a flight from Santiago de Cuba to Havana, killing all 68 people on board, including 28 foreigners.

In July 1997, an Antonov-24 passenger plane crashed into the sea off Santiago de Cuba. All 44 aboard were killed, including two Brazilians and two Spaniards.

In March 2002, a small Antonov-2 plane travelling from Cienfuegos to Cayo Coco crashed in the central province of Santa Clara. All 16 people aboard, among them six Canadian tourists, four Britons and two Germans, were killed.

PRINCE CHARLES will be the one to walk Meghan Markle down the aisle when she marries his son Prince Harry today, Buckingham Palace officials confirmed as final preparations were under way on the eve of the royal wedding.

The bride had initially hoped her father Thomas Markle would take on his traditional role but confirmed on Thursday he would not be able to attend as he was recovering from a heart operation in Mexico, where he lives.

Although many thought Ms Markle’s mother Doria Ragland could step in, Kensington Palace said her future father-in-law would take on the responsibility instead.

“Ms Meghan Markle has asked His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales to accompany her down the aisle … on her wedding day,” the palace said.

“The Prince of Wales is pleased to be able to welcome Ms Markle to the royal family in this way.” Markle’s mum was due yesterday to meet Queen Elizabeth II for the first time at Windsor Castle, where the nuptials will take place.

She had already met with Charles and his wife Camilla on Thursday, and was expected to be joined by her daughter and future son-in-law for tea with the monarch.

SilkAir to merge into SIA after $100m revamp of cabin products

ASEAN+ May 19, 2018 01:00

By The Straits Times
Asia News Network

SINGAPORE AIRLINES’ regional arm, SilkAir, will undergo a significant upgrading of its cabin products as part of plans to eventually merge with Singapore Airlines (SIA).

This will mean that the SilkAir name and aircraft livery – founded in 1992 – will be phased out in a few years.

The announcement by SIA yesterday comes a day after the airline announced an almost 150 per cent hike in its full-year profits, with earnings for the 12 months to March 31, 2018, hitting $893 million.

SIA said the SilkAir upgrade programme will comprise an investment of more than $100 million to upgrade aircraft cabins with new lie-flat seats in business class and the installation of seat-back in-flight entertainment systems in both business and economy class.

This will ensure closer product and service consistency across the SIA Group’s full-service network.

In his annual post-results briefing yesterday, SIA’s chief executive Goh Choon Phong said that there is still a demand for “SilkAir-type services, especially to bigger regional cities”.

However, the short-haul regional market is extremely competitive, with budget carriers accounting for more than half of total capacity within South-east Asia. This makes it challenging for SilkAir, he added.

Aircraft cabin upgrades are expected to start in 2020 due to lead times required by seat suppliers, including to complete certification processes.

The actual merger will take place only after a sufficient number of aircraft have been fitted with the new cabin products.

It is not clear how the merger will affect SilkAir staff, especially, and whether jobs could become redundant.

The Straits Times had first reported on a possible merger between the two carriers in August 2017 when part of SilkAir’s finance operations went to SIA. It was said then that this would likely pave the way for further consolidation and eventually, a full merger.

The merger follows a similar consolidation between the group’s budget carriers. In July 2017, Tigerair was folded into Scoot to drive commercial and operational synergies between the two airlines.

SIA’s full-year earnings is the highest since 2011 and easily surpassed a Bloomberg consensus estimate of $717.46 million. SIA shares closed up 14 cents to $11.14 yesterday before the results were released.

TWENTY years after the Asian financial crisis brought many Southeast Asian nations to their knees, business sentiment is buoyant in a region that functions as one of the primary engines of global growth, according to a survey of chief executives.

Around 84 per cent of executives surveyed across six Asean states – Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines and Vietnam – had positive or very positive expectations for local business conditions in the coming 12 months, while 72 per cent were likely or very likely to make a significant capital investment.

The upbeat results emerged from the inaugural Business Barometer: Oxford Business Group in Asean CEO Survey.

They reflect Asia’s emergence as the main driver of global economic expansion. The IMF forecasts the GDP of the Asean-5 – defined by the fund as Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam – to grow by 5.4 per cent and 5.3 per cent in 2018 and 2019, respectively. It projects that emerging and developing Asia will expand by 6.5 per cent annually over the same period, making it the fastest-growing geographic grouping by some distance.

“This is the first time we have collated our proprietary data from individual Asean markets covered by OBG into a collective sample, allowing us to provide commentary on regional investor sentiment, as well as observe differing national perceptions within the bloc,” Oxford Business Group (OBG) said.

As Asean’s main trade partner and an increasingly important source of foreign direct investment and inbound tourists, China’s growing influence is reflected by the fact that 33 per cent of CEOs surveyed across the six countries cited a slowdown in Chinese demand as the top external factor that could impact their national economies in the short to medium term.

China’s trade with Asean grew 13.8 per cent to hit a record high of US$514.8 billion in 2017, according to official Chinese figures. While its share of global trade in the mid-1970s was just 0.5 per cent, it is now the world’s largest exporter and the top trading partner for all six countries covered in our survey.

It notes that the two countries in the survey with the greatest concern about a potential slowdown in Chinese demand – Thailand and Indonesia – have been cited in various studies as among the Asean members most vulnerable to China’s economic rebalancing towards consumption as the main growth driver. Thailand’s vulnerability stems from its particularly close trade linkages and Indonesia’s from being a net commodities exporter.

With the exception of Singapore, no Asean country features in the top echelons of respected global indicators on national business environments or competitiveness.

Overall, 47 per cent of respondents said transparency in their market was high or very high relative to the region, while 41 per cent said it was low or very low.

This varied picture was replicated on the matter of tax competitiveness, with half of the respondents saying their country’s tax environment was either uncompetitive or very uncompetitive on a global scale, while 41 per cent said it was competitive or very competitive. CEOs from Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand were more positive about their respective tax environments.

Further disparities can be observed in regard to access to credit, with 55 per cent saying it is either easy or very easy, and 40 per cent saying it is difficult or very difficult, the survey found.

Perhaps what this mixed picture of the business environment demonstrates above all else is that despite ongoing efforts towards the harmonisation of certain laws, standards, regulations and practices across the bloc, significant development disparities and competing fiscal regimes remain obstacles to the smooth integration of the Asean Economic Community (AEC), which by 2025 aims to create a cohesive single market and production base that promotes “shared prosperity” among all members.

On education systems in the region, Asean states have consistently ranked relatively low in international assessments over the years, with the exception of world-leading Singapore.

Recognising the need for improvements in human capital, 31 per cent of respondents across the six participating countries chose leadership as the skill in greatest need, while 28 per cent opted for engineering.

However, the perceived absence of leadership qualities represents a more fundamental challenge that will need to be addressed, as the region looks to cultivate a new generation of innovators that can translate ideas into sustainable wealth and job generation, OBG said.

IMF to work with govt in securing meetings

International Monetary Fund (IMF) spokesman Gerry Rice has extended his condolences to the victims of the recent terrorist attacks in East Java’s capital of Surabaya, saying that the organisation was ready to work closely with Indonesia to ensure the safety of the participants of the 2018 IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in Bali in October.

Rice said he was confident that the meeting would take place successfully as the Indonesian government had made “extraordinary efforts” to assure the security of the island during the meeting.

“We look forward to having a successful meeting, and, you know, the Indonesian authorities, I can tell you, are making extraordinary efforts to make sure that is the case, and we’re working closely with them on that,” he added.

“The cooperation is excellent and we’re confident that we will have a successful annual meeting in October. “

Previously, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said that the bombings would not affect the government’s preparations for the meeting.

She said the government, Indonesian Military (TNI) and the National Police were closely working together to ensure the resort island’s security during the meeting, which is expected to be attended by about 15,000 participants. – The Jakarta Post

Holcim sets 2.4 bn pesos to hike cement output

The Philippines’ leading cement-maker Holcim Philippines Inc has earmarked 2.4 billion pesos for capital outlays this year, mostly to boost production capacity and ride on the local construction boom.

Holcim will prioritise operational improvements, tighter cost management and new building solutions to better benefit from and support strengthening construction activity in the country, newly appointed president and chief executive officer John Stull said during the company’s stockholders meeting yesterday.

During his address to shareholders, Stull said the company would boost its equipment maintenance programs while continuing to streamline logistics systems and processes for more reliable customer service.

“Last year, we started projects to raise cement production capacity nationwide to 12 million metric tons by 2019. While these projects have just started, we are already considering more investments to raise clinker capacity given the positive projections for the construction industry,” he said.

ESR-Reit, VIT to merge to form S$3 bn group

Managers of ESR-Reit and Viva Industrial Trust (VIT) yesterday announced a proposed merger to create Singapore’s fourth largest industrial Reit with a combined $3 billion in assets.

The deal, which will be the first in the history of Singapore Reits if successful, will be completed by way of a trust scheme of arrangement.

ESR-Reit will acquire all of VIT’s stapled securities, and in return issue new ESR-Reit units to the stapled security holders, providing VIT with an implied equity value of about $936.7 million.

Based on the issue price of $0.54 per new ESR-Reit unit, VIT stapled securityholders can expect to receive $9.60 in cash, and 160 new ESR-Reit units for every 100 stapled securities held.

ESR Funds Management will be the manager of the enlarged trust, which will benefit from a larger market cap of $1.7 billion, said the managers.

Subject to regulatory approvals, certain key management executives and board members of Viva Industrial Trust Management will also be joining the ESR-Reit Manager. – The Straits Times
