Zinedine Zidane may have won two consecutive Champions League titles but he refuses to admit a third would brand this his very own era at Real Madrid.

Real stand on the brink of a trio of finals ahead of their second leg against Bayern Munich in the last four on Tuesday, when they will carry a 2-1 lead, and two away goals, to the Santiago Bernabeu.

It makes them favourites to go through and, for many, heavy favourites to win the tournament after already beating Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus in the knock-out stages.

For Zidane, a third European crown as coach is now in sight, which would put him level with Carlo Ancelotti and Bob Paisley in the pantheon of successful managers.

Only the three triumphs of Paisley, however, came at one club, Liverpool, and over a single era, in 1977, 1978 and 1981. Ancelotti’s treble stretched across 11 years, with two clubs, Real and AC Milan.

“We cannot talk about this,” Zidane said on Friday. “Coaches like this were given a lot of time, they did a lot of things.

“I am comfortable, we have done well, it is two and a half years that have been good but the rest, ‘Zidane’s Real Madrid’, let’s wait a bit.”

Even Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola have lifted Europe’s biggest prize only twice, all with more years in management under their belts.

But Zidane’s merits as a coach and tactician continue to be downplayed, at least in part because the Frenchman owns arguably the most talented squad in the world and, in Cristiano Ronaldo, the Champions League’s greatest ever player.

– Zidane’s brave call –

Ronaldo’s 15 goals in this year’s competition have certainly been key, but it was Zidane who made the brave call to leave out Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema at the Allianz Arena against Bayern.

The preferred but less established duo of Lucas Vazquez and Marco Asensio combined brilliantly for the winning goal, with the former also switched to right-back late on, where he held off the threat of Franck Ribery.

Bale, harshly treated in recent weeks, may not agree but the majority of Real’s first team are now regularly hailing Zidane’s man-management, his preparation and his tactics.

“When Zizou has to gamble, he does, because he is the boss,” captain Sergio Ramos said. “We are very happy that he is steering the boat.”

There is certainly work still to be done to overcome Bayern, who dominated large parts of the first match and perhaps deserved to emerge with a more flattering result.

“We earned a lot of extra credit for winning the match,” Zidane said. “But we cannot make the same mistakes again and I think on Tuesday we’ll have to go into the match with more determination than we’ve ever had before.”

Real are likely to be without Isco and Dani Carvajal, who sustained shoulder and hamstring injuries respectively during the first leg.

“We are always damaged losing two players but at the same time we cannot do anything about it,” Zidane said.

While Ronaldo was among a number of first-team players rested for Saturday’s win over Leganes, Bale started, a sign the Welshman is set for another snub in midweek.

Bale did not play a single minute against Bayern in Germany and, along with Benzema, has now lost his place in the side for Real’s crunch games in Europe.

“We need everyone,” Zidane said. “I will do everything possible to convince them they are important.

“The important thing is also the key message — for Gareth and Karim, for everyone — that we stay connected. We have a month and we have to give it all we’ve got.”

Ko leads at Lake Merced in search of first LPGA win since 2016, Moriya trails 5 shots

By AFP and The Nation

Former world number one Lydia Ko, seeking her first win since 2016, takes a one-stroke lead into the final round of the LPGA Mediheal Championship after firing a five-under par 67, five ahead of Moriya Jutanugarn on Saturday.

The New Zealand star, who has slumped to 18th in the world rankings during an LPGA title drought stretching back to the Marathon Classic in July of 2016, topped the leaderboard on 11-under 205, one shot in front of American Jessica Korda.

It’s the first time since her last victory that Ko has led after 54 holes of an LPGA event, but the player who turned 21 on Tuesday said she wouldn’t put pressure on herself chasing an elusive win.

“I’ve got to play as best I can, stay focused and have a lot of fun and if it happens that’s great,” Ko said. “But I think the most important thing for me is to stay positive. I know there’s still a lot of golf to be played.”

Overnight leader Korda, seeking her second LPGA victory of the season, left her birdie attempt at the 18th short, settling for a one-under 71 and 206.

Australian Minjee Lee was alone in third after a 68 for 208.

Thailand’s Moriya Jutanugarn, who claimed her first LPGA title last week in Los Angeles, signed for a 71 and headed a group sharing fourth on 210 that also included Colombia’s Mariajo Uribe (68), American Ryann O’Toole (69) and England’s Charley Hull (73).

Moriya committed a double bogey on the 14th hole but redeemed her pride with an eagle on the following hole before signing off with 6 under-par-210 with sister Ariya following a stroke behind.

“I wasn’t as solid as I should be, just good enough to get out of trouble. I didn’t make several putts. For the final round, I will just have to stick to my routine and enjoy the game out there,” said Moriya one of the two Thais to win on the LPGA Tour after her younger sister Ariya.

For Ko, the friendly confines of Lake Merced Golf Club could be just the place to end her drought.

Although Ko had 11 top-10 finishes across the 2017 season but has looked a far cry from the fresh-faced teenager who tore the scene apart back in 2015.

Five victories, including her first Major at the Evian Championship, took Ko to the very pinnacle of women’s golf that year as she became the game’s youngest ever world number one aged just 17.

In all she owns 14 LPGA titles, including two majors and has spent 104 weeks at number one on the world.

Victories at Lake Merced and 2014 and 2015 were part of that meteoric rise, and Ko, now a member of the club in suburban San Francisco, quipped that she thought she’d had some “friendly bounces” during a round that saw her hole out from a bunker for a birdie at the 11th.

That was her fourth birdie of the day, and came on the heels of her lone bogey.

She added two more at 15 and 16 — where her 12-footer broke so sharply late that she looked astonished when it dropped into the side of the cup.

Fabregas boosts Chelsea’s top-four bid, West Brom earn stay of execution

Cesc Fabregas boosted Chelsea’s bid to qualify for the Champions League as his superb strike clinched a 1-0 win at Swansea, while West Brom kept alive their slender hopes of avoiding Premier League relegation with a 1-0 victory against Newcastle on Saturday.

Spain midfielder Fabregas gave Chelsea the perfect start at the Liberty Stadium when he took an Eden Hazard pass and fired home for his 50th Premier League goal in the fourth minute.

That was enough to secure a third successive league win for Antonio Conte’s fifth-place side, who move within two points of Tottenham ahead of their fourth-placed London rivals’ clash with Watford on Monday.

“It’s important for us to take three points. The big problem we are having this season is that we create many chances to score but we don’t take them,” Conte said.

“The only way we have to put a bit of pressure on the top four is to win. Today has been very positive to put that pressure on Tottenham.”

It was a damaging defeat for Swansea and Carlos Carvalhal’s team are now only one point above the relegation zone with three games left.

West Brom would have been relegated to the Championship if they had failed to take maximum points at St James’ Park, but Matt Phillips bagged the first-half winner to keep them in with a shout for a few more hours at least.

Jake Livermore’s pin-point pass sent Phillips racing clear of the Newcastle defence and the winger lashed past Martin Dubravka in the 29th minute.

Bottom club Albion are five points from safety and an eight-season stay in the top flight would still be over if they fail to take maximum points from their last two games against Tottenham and Crystal Palace.

Interim boss Darren Moore said: “We can’t control other results. There’s nothing we can do.

“We’re just doing everything we can at our end. The boys have done really well since I came in.”

Dusan Tadic breathed new life into Southampton’s bid to beat the drop as his double sealed a crucial 2-1 success in the south-coast derby against Bournemouth at St Mary’s.

Mark Hughes’ third-bottom side took the lead when Serbia winger Tadic finished off a rapid counter-attack from Mario Lemina in the 25th minute.

Joshua King equalised for Bournemouth with a close-range finish after Saints failed to clear a corner in first-half stoppage-time.

But Southampton restored their advantage in the 54th minute thanks to a gem from Tadic, who embarked on a fine solo run before finishing in clinical fashion.

Southampton, hoping to extend their six-season stint in the top flight, are one point adrift of safety with three games left.

“This is one of the most important wins in our history,” Tadic said. “We are fighting for our lives and we showed that. We knew we had to win, no matter how we played.”

– Battling Stoke –

Jurgen Klopp admitted Liverpool were below their best as they prepared for the Champions League semi-final, second-leg clash with Roma by settling for a goalless stalemate against Stoke at Anfield.

The Reds head to Rome on Wednesday with a 5-2 advantage from the first leg and do so on the back of a tame encounter they controlled for long periods without over-exerting themselves in search of a winner.

The draw left Liverpool needing a maximum of four points from their remaining two matches to guarantee qualification for the Champions League via a top-four finish.

“I saw everything I wanted to see except fluency and fun and joy,” Klopp said. “It is hard on a day like this. But no-one was seriously injured so we carry on.”

Second-bottom Stoke are three points from safety, but boss Paul Lambert said: “If the lads had played like that from the start of the season, I would not be here and they would be cruising in the league.”

Crystal Palace are on course to avoid relegation after thrashing Leicester 5-0 at Selhurst Park.

Everton pushed Huddersfield deeper into the relegation mire as goals from Cenk Tosun and Idrissa Gueye earned a 2-0 win at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Burnley, in seventh and chasing a Europa League place, were held to a 0-0 draw by Brighton at Turf Moor.

Liverpool held in Stoke stalemate

Liverpool warmed up for their Champions League semi-final second leg against Roma with a low-key goalless draw against Stoke at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s side head to the Italian capital on Wednesday with a 5-2 advantage from the first leg and do so the back of a Premier League match they controlled for long periods without over-exerting themselves in search of a winner.

The result left Liverpool with a healthy cushion over fifth-placed Chelsea and in need of a maximum of four points from their two remaining matches to guarantee qualification for Champions League.

Relegation-threatened Stoke remain in the drop zone with only two games left to avoid slipping into the Championship.

“Today was a difficult, intense time for us. I saw everything I wanted to see except fluency and fun and joy,” Klopp said.

“It is hard on a day like this. Stoke were a little lucky in some situations, it looked a clear penalty.”

Klopp’s programme notes featured a message he has stated with regularity in recent weeks; that Liverpool’s focus on a top four finish in the Premier League should not be neglected despite their progress in European competition.

The Reds manager made five changes from the side which beat Roma, with Sadio Mane the most notable absentee from the starting line-up with a thigh problem.

However, despite Klopp’s words, it was almost inevitable the intensity of that thrilling victory over the Italian side would not be replicated against Stoke.

The Potters have never won a top-flight match at Anfield – the longest winless away run in top-flight history – with their last league victory in Division Two in 1959.

There was never any danger of that statistic being altered as Liverpool dominated, yet only sporadically tested visiting goalkeeper Jack Butland.

This was also a game where Mohamed Salah endured, by his exceptionally high standards, a rare off day.

Indeed it was the first time since Liverpool’s match against Swansea on December 26 last year that Salah has not found the net in the Premier League on home turf.

The Egypt international did have a golden opportunity to score his 32nd league goal of the season in the fifth minute.

Salah was sent clear and when he clipped the ball over Jack Butland the Liverpool supporters were celebrating, only for disbelief to dawn when the shot did not hit the target.

Stoke’s attacking ambition was fleeting and largely centred around seeking to hit Liverpool on the counter attack.

A tame header from Mame Diouf, which hit the side netting, was the best the visitors could muster in a first half in which Liverpool monopolised the clear-cut opportunities.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, who started in midfield, got the ball stuck under his feet after he had exchanged passes with Salah but was unable to generate sufficient power to trouble Butland.

Georginio Wijnaldum hit the side netting from distance, Salah curled a free-kick just wide, while Danny Ings volleyed in from a tight angle only for the assistant referee to flag him offside.

There was a hush around Anfield just before half-time when captain Jordan Henderson lay on the turf clutching his Achilles, however after treatment the midfielder was able to continue.

Attacking the Kop End in the second half, Liverpool’s tempo increased although it failed to translate into clear goalscoring chances.

Liverpool’s players vociferously appealed for a penalty three minutes from time when the ball struck the arm of Erik Pieters inside the box from Wijnaldum’s cross but referee Andre Marriner waved them away.

Stoke then went close at the death when Diouf’s low cross flashed across the area with nobody able to apply the decisive touch, but Paul Lambert will have been more than satisfied with a point.

Three in a row for Vettel, Hamilton shares front row

Ferrari’s championship leader Sebastian Vettel smiled with relief Saturday after he had claimed pole for Sunday’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix ahead of a revived Lewis Hamilton for Mercedes in a crash-strewn qualifying session.

The German, who leads the defending four-time champion by nine points after three races this season, clocked a best lap in one minute and 41.498 seconds to sweep to the prime starting spot.

It was an emphatic demonstration of his and Ferrari’s pace after he had struggled in practice on Friday. It was his third consecutive pole position and the 53rd of his career.

“In the end, I knew I had the car I wanted and it did what I wanted… The first lap was good and it was good enough in the end so I am happy,” said Vettel.

Hamilton was 0.179 seconds adrift after an improved showing that left him ahead of Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas, Daniel Ricciardo and his Red Bull team-mate Max Verstappen.

“That was close,” said Hamilton.

“We did the best job we could and I think I lost a little bit in the final sector, but Sebastian did a great job. We are in the mix and I am hoping to give him a hard time in the race.”

Bottas said: “We can fight them here and we are starting very close. This race can be crazy, but we have a good starting point.”

Kimi Raikkonen wound up sixth in the second Ferrari after an eventful session and a huge slide on his final flying lap.

Esteban Ocon was seventh ahead of his Force India team-mate Sergio Perez, Nico Hulkenberg who faces a five-place grid penalty for a gearbox change, and his Renault team-mate Carlos Sainz.

In cool and overcast conditions, with a strong breeze, the opening Q1 session began briskly, but was soon interrupted when Romain Grosjean’s Haas car came to a halt in an escape road at Turn Three, his gearbox jammed.

He was unable to rejoin while the action was controlled by yellow flags. As a result, Ocon was briefly fastest ahead of Hulkenberg and Sergey Sirotkin, back in action after his crash in morning practice.

– ‘Unacceptable’ –

For Hulkenberg, it was encouraging despite knowing he faced a five-place grid penalty for a gearbox change.

More drama followed in the final minutes of Q1 when Pierre Gasly almost clipped his Red Bull team-mate Brendon Hartley. Taking avoiding action, Gasly bounced over the kerbs at Turn 15 and into an escape road.

The Frenchman was furious, screaming at the New Zealander over the team radio. Told Hartley had a puncture he said: “Unacceptable”.

“Sorry guys,” said Hartley. “I was trying to get out of the way, but it was too late. I went the wrong way. I feel pretty stupid.”

This incident resulted in them both being eliminated in 17th and 19th positions along with the luckless Grosjean. Also out went Stoffel Vandoorne of McLaren and Marcus Ericsson of Sauber.

In Q2 more drama saw Raikkonen going straight on, at Turn 15, and Lance Stroll also left the track.

Bottas led the way ahead of Verstappen and Vettel before Raikkonen went off again and a persistent Hamilton topped the charts ahead of his team-mate by 0.003 seconds until Raikkonen, racing with fury on a set of ultra-softs, roared to the head of the lap-times in the final seconds.

All this left Stroll in 11th place ahead of Williams team-mate Sirotkin, Fernando Alonso of McLaren, Charles Leclerc of Sauber and Kevin Magnussen of Haas.

On their first flying runs, Vettel outpaced Hamilton by three-tenths ahead of Bottas and the Red Bulls with Raikkonen sixth, following a scary off-road excursion at Turn 16. “I was on the kerb and couldn’t steer,” said the Finn.

Red-hot Tsitsipas to face Nadal in Barcelona final

sports April 29, 2018 08:15

Up-and-coming Stefanos Tsitsipas became the first Greek to reach an ATP World Tour final since Nicholas Kalogeropoulos in 1973 (Des Moines) on Saturday after he knocked out home favourite  Pablo Carreno Busta 7-5 6-4 for his first ATP Tour final in the Barcelona Open on Saturday.

Tsitsipas, 19 years old and ranked 63, continued his Giant-Killer’s form with his first win against a top 10 player and will play world No 1 Rafael Nadal in the title match.

“I couldn’t have enjoyed it more, I went onto the court and enjoyed every single moment,” said Tsitsipas, who will have a chance to become the first player from Greece to win an ATP World Tour title. “I am very proud of myself and also I believe I made my country proud.”

The last Greek to make an ATP final was Nicholas Kalogeropoulos in Des Moines back in 1973. Tsitsipas is the youngest Barcelona finalist since Nadal in 2005.

“I couldn’t have enjoyed it more, I went onto the court and enjoyed every single moment,” said Tsitsipas. “I am very proud for myself and also I believe I made my country proud.”

Stefanos Tsitsipas

Win or lose on Sunday, Tsitsipas will become the first Greek player to break into the world top 50 when the latest men’s rankings are released on Monday.

The fast-rising Greek stunned third-seeded Austrian Dominic Thiem on Friday 6-3, 6-2.

That was his second win over a top 10 player — Thiem is seventh in the world — following victory over Goffin during his best previous run to the semi-finals in Antwerp last October.

Yet to drop a set this week, Tsitsipas served five aces and won 78 percent of first serves to see off his Spanish rival in one hour 35 minutes.

Nadal, meanwhile, racked up the 400th clay court victory of his career on Saturday as he swept past Belgium’s David Goffin 6-4, 6-0 to reach the Barcelona final and stand just one win from an 11th title in the Spanish city.

World number one Nadal also extended his winning streak on clay to 44 consecutive sets as he downed Goffin for a third time in three meetings on the red dirt surface he has dominated for more than a decade.

“Very happy,” Nadal, who will be chasing his 77th overall career title, told atpworldtour.com.

“I played I think my best match of the tournament so far, no doubt about that. It was a great first set in my opinion. Both of us played at a very high level.”

Nadal slipped a break down at 0-2 to fourth seed Goffin in the first set on Saturday but that was the only blip on his afternoon.

Goffin saved two match points in the sixth game of the second set but a weary forehand went long on the third and Nadal celebrated with fists punched to the sky.

Nadal’s 400 wins on clay is the fourth best of all time with Guillermo Vilas of Argentina a long way ahead with 659 while Spain’s Manuel Orantes won 502 and Austria’s Thomas Muster racked up 422.

However, Nadal has lost just 35 times on clay in his career, easily giving him the best winning return of 91.9%.

Since his first tour-level clay-court victory over Karel Kucera of Slovakia at the 2003 Monte Carlo Masters, Nadal has also collected 54 clay court trophies.

Ten of those have come at Roland Garros, providing the bulk of his 16 Grand Slam titles.

Nadal said he will not under-estimate Tsitsipas in Sunday’s final.

“Stefanos is a great player. Always the young players have something special and he’s playing with big confidence,” said the top seed.

“He’s playing so well, so it’s going to be a very tough match. I need to be ready to play at the highest level possible.”

TOYOTA THAILAND Team have set their sights on podium finishes in two local and two overseas events they plan to enter in the 2018 season.

Toyota team manager and racer Sutthipong Samitchart said he expected his squad to continue their impressive performance after winning the Thailand Super Car GTM and Thailand Super Car GTC titles from the first circuit of the Thailand Super Series at the Sepang International Circuit earlier this month.

Comprising Sutthipong himself, veteran Nattavude Charoensukh-awatana, Nattapong Horthongkam, Manat Kulapalanont, and newcomer Supong Khamtonwong (winner of the Corolla Altis One Make Race 2017), Toyota Thailand Team will compete in two local events.

Apart from the Thailand Super Series 2018 where his team will compete in the Thailand Super Car GTC, Thailand Super Car GTM and 2000 Class 1 and 2000 Class 2 events, the team will also take part in the three-circuit RATT Thailand Endurance Championship International (in Super Production 1600cc and Super Production 2000cc), which kicks off in June.

In terms of the three offshore events, Toyota will begin their campaign in the ADAC Zurich 24 Hours Race at Nurburgring from May 10-13 in Germany.

“This is a tough competition as the routes are quite dangerous. But it will be a great challenge for us,” said Sutthipong, who will spearhead his side for the fifth appearance in Nurburgring.

Michinobu Sugata, Managing Officer of Toyota Motor Thailand Company Limited presents a trophy to his team.

Then the team will compete under the name Arto Panther Team Thailand in the Japan Super GT 2018. They will drive the latest Lexus RC-F GT3 in the GT300 category for the second straight year.

Sutthipong said his would be the only Thai team to compete in all eight circuits of the 2018 Japan Super in GT300 event.

Nuttavude, 55, is eyeing a strong showdown in the Chang Super GT Race, the fourth circuit of the Japan Super GT, on June 30-July 1 at the Chang International Circuit in Buri Ram. “Our team has been having better results steadily. We hope to be on the top of the podium for the home fans in Buri Ram,” the former motorcycle racer said.

Wenger set for for Old Trafford farewell

Wenger set for for Old Trafford farewell

sports April 28, 2018 09:16

By AFP

Arsene Wenger is unsure of the welcome he will receive on his final visit to Old Trafford as Arsenal boss on Sunday after many “great battles” against Manchester United during his two decades in charge.

The 68-year-old Frenchman, leaving the club at the end of the season, will bring a side that is a pale shadow of the team that challenged United’s Premier League dominance during his first decade in charge.

Wenger’s clashes with former United boss Alex Ferguson are the stuff of legend and his relationship with current Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has been laced with bitterness.

But both men have reached out to him with warm words since he announced he was stepping down.

Mourinho said he regrets some of the “little negative episodes” between himself and Wenger over the years, calling on United fans to give him a fitting send-off.

When asked whether he could be friends with Mourinho, Wenger spoke instead of “respect” for the current United boss.

Arsenal, in sixth spot in the league, look certain to miss out on the top four for the second year in a row.

But Wenger will still believe he can leave the club with a trophy and a Champions League spot despite conceding a late goal in a 1-1 home draw with Atletico Madrid in the Europa League on Thursday.

The Frenchman is unsure how he will be greeted at Old Trafford, where he is unlikely to play a first-choice side with the second leg of the Europa League tie looming next week.

“I don’t know what reaction I will get but look we had some great battles in 22 years and for me what will be at stake is to recover from that result (against Atletico) and before we go to Atletico have a good game,” Wenger said.

– Sanchez reunion –

The Frenchman, who says he is not ready to retire from football, is likely to face a side including former Gunners star Alexis Sanchez, who left to join United in the January transfer window.

The Chilean’s presence in the opposing team will be a painful reminder to Arsenal fans of Wenger’s inability in recent years to convince many of his best players to buy into his project and stay.

Wenger said he was so committed to Arsenal that he even declined an approach by then United chairman Martin Edwards when Ferguson was mulling retiring in 2001.

“Arsenal is the love of my life. I turned many, many, many clubs down to face the challenge when we built the stadium,” said Wenger, referring to the Emirates.

“I speak to everybody, yes I met Martin Edwards, many people came to see me but I was always loyal to this club.”

“When I look back now I realise what a great team they had,” Wenger said of United. “(Ryan) Giggs, (Paul) Scholes, as young players they had (Cristiano) Ronaldo and (Wayne) Rooney and you see what Ronaldo and Rooney went on to do in the rest of their career.

“(Ruud) van Nistelrooy, all these players together — it was an unbelievable team and I think I realise more with a bit of distance what a challenge it was.”

United are hoping to consolidate their hold on second place in the Premier League, which would mark a significant improvement over last year’s sixth-placed finish for the club, who have also qualified for the FA Cup final, where they will face Chelsea.

American businessman Shahid Khan has said he will do “everything possible” to give Chelsea the option of using Wembley as a temporary home if his £500 million ($698 million) bid to buy the iconic London ground is accepted.

England’s governing Football Association confirmed Thursday that Khan, the owner of Chelsea’s local London rivals Fulham, as well as the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars, had made an offer to buy the national stadium.

Tottenham Hotspur, like Chelsea a London-based club in the Premier League, are currently using Wembley as a temporary base while a successor ground to their White Hart Lane home is built.

Chelsea want to redevelop and increase the capacity of their Stamford Bridge ground in west London.

The Blues are set to vacate their home at the end of the 2019/20 season and it may be up to four years before they are able to return.

Wembley’s 90,000 capacity makes it an obvious choice for Chelsea, particularly as the 82,000-seater Twickenham, the southwest London headquarters of English rugby union, has been ruled out of the running.

Khan’s plan to stage even more gridiron games at Wembley, and maybe even base the Jaguars there permanently, could complicate matters for Chelsea.

But Khan said he would welcome the Blues playing at Wembley — for the right price — having made it clear he has no intention of moving Fulham, pushing for promotion to the Premier League from the second-tier Championship, out of Craven Cottage.

“Absolutely we would discuss it with them (Chelsea) and really encourage them because that is part of the tradition and stewardship of Wembley, just like with Spurs being there this season,” Khan told Friday’s edition of the London Evening Standard.

“Chelsea would be welcome to use it

“Obviously, they would be paying for it, just like Spurs did, but I think it is really important because our goal is to get the usage up and that would be part of it,” he added.

“Could it happen for four years? Obviously you would have to move things but from our viewpoint, we would love that to work.”

Rafael Nadal took his clay-court win streak to 42 consecutive sets when he battled to a 6-0, 7-5 triumph over Martin Klizan in the Barcelona quarter-finals on Friday as he also moved just one win away from 400 on the surface.

World number one Nadal, the 10-time champion in Barcelona, was made to work by Slovakian qualifier Klizan, ranked at 140 and who had knocked out Novak Djokovic in the second round.

Klizan had three set points to take the match to a decider but Nadal, who had been 3-5 down in the second set, battled back for victory on a third match point and will face Belgium’s David Goffin for a place in the final.

“I went to the bathroom (after the first set) and maybe after that I lost some timing,” said Nadal.

“It was a great first set but I played a very bad game at the start of the second. It was tough — I feel a little lucky to win in straight sets.”

Should he prevail on Saturday, Nadal would become only the fourth man to win 400 matches on clay.

The 31-year-old remains a long way behind all-time leader Guillermo Vilas of Argentina, who won 659 clay-court matches.

Compatriot Manuel Orantes won 502 while Austria’s Thomas Muster racked up 422. However, Nadal has lost just 35 times on the dirt surface he has dominated for over a decade.

He is also 56-3 for his career in Barcelona as the 16-time major winner builds up for an assault on an 11th French Open title next month.

“All these statistics, I don’t pay much attention. If it happens, then that would be very good. But I only think of winning the match,” said Nadal.

“Now I am in another semi-final. That’s great news but I will face a tough opponent. I need to be aggressive and play with the right intensity.”

Goffin, the Belgian fourth seed, made the semi-finals with a 6-7 (3/7), 6-2, 6-2 win over eighth-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain.

Goffin defeated Nadal in the World Tour Finals in London last year but the Spaniard has won both their meetings on clay, in straight sets in Monte Carlo and Madrid, also in 2017.

Nadal’s hopes of winning the Barcelona crown for an 11th time were boosted earlier on Friday when two of his closest rivals, Grigor Dimitrov and Dominic Thiem, were knocked out.

Second seed Dimitrov was defeated by fifth-seeded Spaniard Pablo Carreno-Busta 6-3, 7-6 (7/4).

Thiem, the third-seeded Austrian, was stunned by 19-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas with the fast-rising Greek seeing off the world number seven 6-3, 6-2.

World number 63 Tsitsipas won the last 14 points of the match to reach the semi-finals.

It was his second win over a top 10 player following his victory over Goffin in Antwerp last October. He will face Carreno-Busta for a place in the final.
