Few Thais can resist Japanese bakery items and the newest cream puff Croquant Chou has now arrived at Zakuzaku, a sister brand of Bake Cheese Tart Thailand, whose first Bangkok branch can be founded on the MF floor of Siam Center.

Adhering to the house’s “Factory in Shop” concept, each chou is freshly baked in the store and filled with custard cream for each order, thus allowing customers to witness the entire process and enjoy its guaranteed freshness.

Zakuzaku also serves up Soft Serve ice cream made of Hokkaido milk and coated with Croquant crusts.

The unique concept of Zakuzaku stands by the “wearable choux” philosophy, reflecting a commitment to creating an exclusive kind of baked goodie you can enjoy anywhere and anytime.

The Bangkok branch promises to carry on the philosophy of the brand, offering only the best quality baked goods made mainly of imported ingredients from Japan

Shouting out about a silent killer

lifestyle May 10, 2018 12:15

By The Nation

The Thai Gynecologic Cancer Society (TGCS) is joined with Chulabhorn Hospital on May 8, World Ovarian Cancer Day, to raise awareness about ovarian cancer, a silent killer that has the highest mortality rate of patients with gynaecologic cancers.

The Thai Gynecologic Cancer Society and Chulabhorn Hospital, the acknowledged specialist in cancer treatment and research, established under the gracious guidance of Prof Dr HRH Princess Chulabhorn with the intent of alleviating the suffering of cancer patients, jointly launched the “Whisper of Ovary” campaign, together with a video clip, to underscore the need for raising awareness about ovarian cancer in Thai society and to encourage Thai women to have annual gynaecological check-ups to reduce the risk of this disease.

Prof Dr Jatupol Srisomboon, president of the Thai Gynaecologic Cancer Society, says that ovarian cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer among Thai women following breast and cervical cancers. About 2,700 patients – or 6 in every 100,000 women – are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year in Thailand, making it the second highest cause of mortality (53 per cent) among patients with gynaecologic cancers after cervical cancer (55 per cent).

“The high mortality rate of women with ovarian cancer is due to late diagnosis. The early stage of ovarian cancer often presents no specific symptoms. Some patients may experience symptoms that are often caused by other less serious conditions, such as abdominal pain, swelling or bloating, or pelvic pressure. By the time ovarian cancer is diagnosed, the cancer has usually spread to other nearby organs. About 64 per cent of new patients are diagnosed with ovarian cancer when the disease is at an advanced stage. In addition, there is still no vaccine to protect against this type of cancer. It is therefore vital to raise awareness and educate people about this silent killer disease.”

Dr Nuttavut Kantathavorn, a specialist gynecologic oncologist at Chulabhorn Hospital, adds that the risk of developing ovarian cancer is influenced by several factors, including age, environment, lifestyle and family history. Research has shown that a specific inherited genetic abnormality heightens the risk of developing ovarian cancer. Statistically, a woman with an abnormality or mutation of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes has a high risk of developing ovarian cancer (estimated at 35-70 per cent and 10-30 per cent respectively), while those without BRCA mutations have a lower risk of only 1-2 per cent.

There is currently no reliable screening method to detect ovarian cancer and so symptoms often go unnoticed. As the early stage of ovarian cancer often presents with no specific symptoms, every woman should therefore schedule an annual check-up with her gynaecologist, especially those whose family members or direct relatives were diagnosed with ovarian or breast cancer at a young age. A genetic test is now available to detect BRCA abnormalities in patients with ovarian cancer. Cancer patients with this genetic mutation have a high chance of passing on the abnormality to family members and close relatives, thus making them prone to ovarian cancer.

The sooner the BRCA abnormality is found, the quicker surveillance and preventive action can commence, thus reducing the risk of developing ovarian cancer. Hollywood star Angelina Jolie, who lost her mother, grandmother and aunt to cancer, decided to undergo a double mastectomy and have her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed, after a test confirmed she carried the BRCA mutation, which put her at 87 per cent risk of developing breast cancer and 50 per cent risk of ovarian cancer.

“The BRCA genetic testing can be carried out at any leading hospitals but the cost is very high, so practitioners only recommend the test for those with specific risk factors, namely patients with ovarian cancer, patients who develop breast cancer below the age of 50, and those with 2 direct relatives who have developed breast or ovarian cancers. A woman in whom the BRCA mutations are identified will not necessarily develop cancer but is at a higher risk than a woman without BRCA abnormalities. If the gene abnormality is found early, the woman will enjoy better surveillance and be better equipped to handle their life. Most importantly, whether or not you have BRCA gene abnormality, we recommend every woman to consistently take care of her health, do regular self-physical examinations and schedule annual check-ups with a gynaecologist. Ovarian cancer can be cured if it is detected at the early stage,” Dr. Nuttavut concluded.

Chulabhorn Hospital also invites everyone to whisper a warning to their loved ones to protect them from ovarian cancer as well as to pass hope and smiles forward to cancer patients by uploading and sharing a photo with the frame “Whisper of Ovary” on social media. More details can be found on Chulabhorn Hospital’s Facebook page. Please also help reinforce the determination of Prof Dr HRH Princess Chulabhorn to provide opportunities for disadvantaged cancer patients to access proper medical treatment as well as improve the health and life quality of cancer patients.

Utah becomes first US state to allow ‘free-range parenting’

lifestyle May 09, 2018 08:28

By Agence France-Presse
Los Angeles

Utah has become the first US state to allow children to roam free and take part in unsupervised activities under a “Free Range Parenting” law that went into effect on Tuesday.

The state’s governor in March signed a bill that protects parents from being prosecuted for child neglect if they allow their kids to do things on their own.

That includes playing outside without adult supervision, taking part in certain activities or walking to school alone.

The new legislation, adopted unanimously by lawmakers, stipulates that any child left unsupervised must be mature enough and have good judgement.

“Utah’s ‘Free-Range Parenting’ law is a good example of common sense legislation,” the state’s governor Gary Herbert told AFP in a statement.

“We believe that parents know and love their children better than anybody. We also believe that absent evidence of neglect, danger or cruelty, parents have the best sense of how to teach responsibility to their children.

“Responsible parents should be able to let kids be kids without constantly looking over their shoulders for approval,” he added.

The bill does not specify the age range targeted by the legislation which was worded vaguely so as to allow authorities to deal with situations on a case by case basis, supporters say.

In drafting the bill, sponsors contacted Lenore Skenazy, who coined the term “free-range kids” and touched off a fierce national debate on the issue in 2008 after she wrote a column about letting her nine-year-old son get home alone on the New York subway.

Skenazy hailed the measure in a blog post on Tuesday while encouraging other states to follow suit.

“Americans are tired of being forced to overprotect their kids out of fear that any confidence in their kids and communities could be misinterpreted as negligence,” she wrote.

She added that the law does not discourage people from calling the police if they find children in dangerous situations.

“That is a far cry from arresting and interrogating moms who let their kids play in the park on a bright summer day while they are working their shift at McDonald’s,” she said.

“So let us raise a glass of lemonade – preferably purchased from some kids sitting next to a homemade sign, without their parents having to sit there with them.”

Japan gives its robot dogs a respectful send off

THE ROBOT dogs lined up in their dozens last week were no tech fair display. They were the dearly departed being honoured with their own traditional “funeral”.

In some respects, it was a funeral like any other in Japan, with incense smoke wafting as a priest chanted a sutra, praying for the peaceful transition of the souls of the departed.

But the departed were 114 of Sony’s old generation Aibo robot dogs, each wearing a tag to show where they came from and to which family they belonged.

Electronics repair company A Fun, which specialises in fixing vintage products, has sent off some 800 Aibos this way in recent years at a centuries-old Buddhist temple.

With the Aibo no longer in production, owners of old or “dead” robodogs often send them to the company, the only way it can obtain genuine parts to use in repairs.

More than 100 robot dogs from different years sit next to each other in Japan – not for a tech fair but for their “funeral”. / AFP

The defunct dogs serve as the equivalent of organ donors for defective robots, but before they are put to use, the company honours them with a traditional send-off.

The dogs often arrive with letters that give their names, how they spent their lives, and other details.

“I feel relieved to know there will be a prayer for my Aibo,” one owner said in a letter.

Another owner wrote: “Please help other Aibos. Tears came to my eyes when I decided to say goodbye.”

Bungen Oi, the priest at the 450-year-old Kofukuji temple in Isumi, east of Tokyo, dismisses the idea that holding memorials for machines is absurd.

“All things have a bit of soul,” he says after the service.

Spectators offer prayers for Sony’s robots’ funeral./AFP

Nobuyuki Norimatsu, who heads A Fun, also says he feels the robodogs have souls, even if they are destined to be “donors”.

“We’d like to return the souls to the owners and make the robot a machine to utilise their parts. We don’t take parts before we hold a funeral for them,” he explains.

The Aibo was the world’s first home-use entertainment robot capable of developing its own “personality”.

Sony rolled out the first-generation Aibo in June 1999, with the initial batch of 3,000 selling out in just 20 minutes, despite the hefty 250,000 yen (more than Bt70,000) price tag.

Over the following years, more than 150,000 units were sold, in numerous iterations, ranging from gleaming metallic-silver versions to round-faced cub-like models.

By 2006, however, Sony’s business was in trouble and the Aibo, an expensive and somewhat frivolous luxury, had to go.

A girl wraps a Sony pet robot Aibo after its  funeral./AFP

The company kept its “Aibo Clinic” open until March 2014, but then told dedicated and loving owners that they were on their own.

Desperate owners have turned to A Fun, which draws on the knowledge of former Sony engineers, to get repairs.

In January, Sony unveiled a new version of its robot dog, the “aibo”, packed with artificial intelligence and internet connectivity, but it has not resumed repairs of old models.

The media fanfare did however prompt many owners of older models to look for ways to repair their faithful friends, or to donate those behind salvage.

A repaired Aibo is the product of generous owners, whose own dogs have become lifesaving donors, Narimatsu says.

“I feel it moves on the combined hearts of owners,” he adds.

Malaysian cosmetics brand Elianto Make Up just created a Durian Musang King makeup collection, a world first.

No one saw this coming, but a Malaysian beauty brand has created a durian-flavoured makeup collection that will wake up your senses – and give Malaysians a chuckle!

And, it’s not just any durian, it’s the King of all fruits – the Durian Musang King, a sought-after fruit by durian lovers for its deep yellow flesh and beautiful flavour.

This Malaysian feat is a first in the world, so durian lovers or anyone curious enough will now be able to get their hands on durian flavour infused makeup.

The Elianto Durian Musang King collection comprises rich yellow colours, inspired by the fleshy durian, for its lip care, lip colour, highlighter and mono eyeshadows.

Elianto is derived from the word sunflower in Italian, and the brand is inspired by the unique combination of striking beauty and utility symbolised by the flower.

“We wanted to approach makeup in a fresh, playful and daring way. By introducing a unique collection like Elianto Durian Musang King, we are celebrating individuality and diversity. Makeup has no boundaries, it gives women the freedom to express themselves,” says Teo Ai Siong, managing director and brand owner of Elianto Make Up.

“Elianto is marketed as a masstige beauty brand and offers a wide range of premium cosmetics at an affordable price,” Teo adds.

The brand utilises botanical extracts and all the products are fully imported from Switzerland, Italy, South Korea, Taiwan and Germany.

The Elianto Durian Musang King collection comprises rich yellow colours, inspired by the fleshy durian.

By now you would probably be licking your lips and to help you “taste” this thorny fruit, the Elianto Durian Musang King Lip Care SPF18 is infused with durian scent and comes in a pinkish and yellow shade, while the Elianto Durian Musang King Lip Colour is a creamy and lightweight matte lip colour.

Fans of matte eyeshadow will love the ultra soft textures of the Elianto Durian Musang King Eyeshadows that comes in Cocoa and Yellow shades.

For a radiant complexion the Elianto Durian Musang King Highlighter lights up your face with a dewy glow courtesy of the yellow tinted powder.

Oh, and in case that’s not enough to tickle you, the collection also includes the Elianto Durio Bloom EDP fragrance – described as a refreshing yet woody scent.

So, now you don’t have to wait for durian season, this scent will remind you of your favourite durian all year round!
