Details of airport rail link, mega  EEC projects may get a closer look

THAILAND’S political parties have vowed to continue development of the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), while Democrat Party and Pheu Thai Party will review the high-speed railway project.

Uttama Savanayana, leader of Phalang Pracharath Party, has pledged to continue the EEC policy and redistribute wealth, which is mainly centralised in Bangkok, to the regions.

The EEC, with some areas run by the current government, is to be extended and prepared for investments by the targeted industries.

It will also be extended to other regions in the concept of E-san 4.0 (Northeast), Lanna 4.0 (North) and Dam Kwan 4.0 (South).

The EEC is part of the Prayut Chan-o-cha-led government’s policies to boost Thailand’s competitiveness and help the country exits the middle-income gap in 2026 with an estimated per capital income of US$12,540 (Bt400,000) per year.

Korn Chatikavanj, deputy leader of the Democrat Party, said his party reserves the right to review the EEC plan, particularly its mega infrastructure investment.

In principle, the investment is necessary, he said, but if the Democrat Party is in power, it will review mega investments such as the high-speed railway project linking the country’s three main airports.

It will also negotiate with the bid winner on several issues, including the proposed profit guarantee of 6 per cent per year, he said.

“This project should not have a profit guarantee and we hope that the government will not rush for contract signing with the private enterprise,” he said.

As well, the Democrats will not confine the EEC to only three provinces. Special economic zones in border areas will also be developed.

Based on the continued expansion of border trade, an upgrade in several industries including processing and community products, will help increase income and redistribute wealth to other areas, going beyond Bangkok and its vicinities and the three eastern provinces, Korn said.

Chadchart Sittipunt, a leading member of Pheu Thai, said the party will continue the EEC development but needs to look at details of each project and the demand for the 12 targeted industries, and might extend the project to nearly all potential provinces for economic redistribution.

“Pheu Thai Party will certainly continue this project (EEC), like the Eastern Seaboard.

“We have to continue but will consider which project needs improvement or adjustment in details. For example, the high-speed rail project still lacks connectivity with other areas.

“We have to look at the U-Tapao Airport project in terms of the number of passengers,” he said.

EEC  law

Prachya Samalapa of the Thai Chamber of Commerce in the East, said the mega projects might remain unchanged in the initial period of the new government. If change is needed, it is expected to be in line with the EEC law, he said.

“Foreign investors see Thailand as an attractive investment destination. Therefore, although some projects may be delayed, they are still on the roadmap and the EEC infrastructure will benefit the country’s economy.

“Investors also gain confidence as the project moves ahead. And certainly, businessmen will come to invest but are waiting for the election result and the new government’s policy,” he said.

Somnuck Jongmeewasin, a member of EEC Watch, is urging that the political party that forms the new government reviews the EEC policy, as it has not passed a strategic environmental assessment (SEA).

Economic growth may slacken due to power

THE economic growth forecast for this year could be revised down to 3.7-4.2 per cent from the earlier estimate of 4-4.5 per cent, the Centre for Economic and Business Forecasting under the University of Thai Chamber of Commerce said.

The downward revision follows the expected power vacuum after Thailand’s election this month, impacts from the US-China trade dispute and lack of clarity on Britain’s exit from the European Union.

Thanavath Phonvichai, director of the centre, said that though the economy would be stimulated by short-term spending for the election, Thailand might have to wait until the third quarter of the year before a new government takes shape. There could be a vacuum period for new fund infusion to stimulate the economy with the only acceleration coming from the remaining budget disbursement.

Though the US-China trade war has been easing, there will be impacts on the global economy from the US move to impose 10 per cent tariff on US$200 billion worth of Chinese goods, while Brexit remains unclear, he said.

“Our earlier growth projection was 4-4.5 per cent for the Thai economy. But it may be lowered to 3.7-4.2 per cent with 3.8 per cent being the average figure. The centre is revising down the economic figures for 2019,” he said.

Thanavath urged the new government to come up with policies to attract foreign investment, boost Thailand’s competitiveness and push up the Thai growth to 5 per cent, a figure he expects will encourage foreigners to invest in Thailand.

But to have 5 per cent economic growth, the new government might have to continue with the 20-year national strategic plan and mega-infrastructure projects extending from high-speed rail, airports, ports to the Eastern Economic Corridor. The country needs to restructure its product manufacturing to add more value with innovations and create human resources for technologies and the digital economy.

Based on the centre’s survey of 2,239 people nationwide in February this year about confidence in the Thai economy, the Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) increased for a second straight month to 82.0 from 80.7 in January. The current CCI inched up to 55.7 from 54.5 and the future index rose to 93.6 from 92.3.

Thanavath cited certainty about the election schedule and an active election environment nationwide for the rise in the indices. Political parties are expected to spend about Bt30 billion to Bt50 billion for their election campaigns and activities.

Chinese tourists have also returned to near-normal levels, as reflected in information from chambers of commerce nationwide about their high occupancy rates, while prices of agricultural products including field corn, tapioca, pork, chicken meat, duck meat and eggs have gone up. The US-China trade war has also eased after two earlier rounds of negotiations, he said.

“Consumer confidence has improved while Chinese tourists are back, the trade war has not worsened, and the Thai election is a certainty. Therefore, the Thai economy is expected to gain from these factors particularly from the spending in election campaigns,” he said.

Technology is the key shaper of year’s retail trends

Economy March 12, 2019 01:00

By SPECIAL TO THE NATION

THIS IS poised to be a transformational year for retail. Technology in 2019 continues to change the rules of engagement, consumers are more demanding than ever, and getting them to notice your brand amid all the noise in the market is an even greater challenge.

“Digital technology is changing the customer experience,” says Thanit Osathalert, head of consumer and retail, KPMG in Thailand. “Customers are currently more likely to use digital technology to explore and interact with potential purchases.

This offers retailers the opportunity to transform how they interact with the consumer.”

In its latest publication, KPMG has identified key retail trends that will shape the industry in 2019.

From ‘we’ to ‘me’

The best retailers are forensically using customer-centric data to deliver hyper-personalisation. Retailers can now get a very in-depth understanding of their consumers’ behavioural habits through a new frontier in personalisation such as through analysing emotional data, eye movements and DNA, in addition to searches, purchases and views to pinpoint exactly what customers need in real time.

“Adding analytics to the mix, retailers can use predictive analytics to forecast their customers’ next moves. This is also forcing retailers to reinvent the in-store experience,” adds Osathalert.

Consumers get price savvy

The introduction of smartphones has enabled consumers to become more price savvy and informed than ever before. Modern shoppers don’t want to pay full price and they aren’t afraid to share their opinions through reviews. Paying less for more and talking about it has become a trend in itself with more avenues for consumers to leave reviews and suggestions. In fact, 81 per cent of shoppers do online research before committing to the purchase and 89 per cent of these customers begin their buying process with a search engine.

The rise and rise of voice

In 2019, we will see artificial intelligence’s impact on retail grow substantially in two key areas: smart speakers and chatbots. Most smart speakers depend on assistants from current e-commerce giants – which opens up new doors into consumer homes for retailers. Chatbots offer businesses the opportunity to provide personalised online customer experience.

Experiential retail is coming to life

Retailers are actively experimenting with experience as their most powerful tool to win and retain customers. New figures show consumers continue to spend less on buying things, and more on doing things. By creating a more immersive experience, retailers can drive people to their stores and ensure they leave not just with products but also memories.

‘Planet friendly’ is due to arrive

The planet friendly movement has momentum. Consumers are shopping with emotion and values as much as their wallets. In 2019 we will see companies make more meaningful sustainability commitments that create significant impact that align with the values of the company, its brands and its target audiences.

Social currency will be more transactional

Social media has become embedded in many customers’ purchasing journeys. More and more, consumers are relying on community and word-of-mouth instead of advertisements for product recommendations. Retailers need to actively engage with these tools as consumers increasingly use them as a primary interaction point with brands and companies.

From transaction to service provider

In today’s retail economy, understanding the power of platforms is vital. The supply chain is no longer the central aggregator of business value. What a company owns matters less than what it can connect. Platforms that are dominating the retail industry know that the power lies in selling a service where they can create the means of connection.

Due to the high risks of adapting core business models, traditional players will collaborate and form partnerships to drive efficiency. We will see companies invest in a business but not get involved directly, consequently seeing the rise of joint ventures in 2019.

“In conclusion, pairing digital technology with predictive analytics is a powerful combination for any retailer who is able to connect these dots. Retailers that are performing well have connected their physical and digital presence to deliver an enhanced customer experience.“A seamless hand-off between and among technologies and in-store, during single and multiple journeys, is becoming a must as customers come to expect a ‘phygital’ experience,” says Osathalert.

Women, your country is the world

Economy March 12, 2019 01:00

By TEE CHAYAKUL
SPECIAL TO THE NATION

THE SAD truth is many women today continue to find themselves hindered from achieving their dreams whether from internal (eg, self-confidence) or external (eg, environmental) factors that sometimes may – or may not – fall under our control. We find ourselves bound and constrained by the limitations of societal norms that restrain us from becoming the best version of ourselves.

In light of the recently celebrated International Women’s Day – a day dedicated to celebrating women and their accomplishments – your trusty online travel companion, Traveloka, aims to empower women with strength, confidence and courage to embark on solo travelling, expanding horizons and conquering fears to fully realise and master your true self.

The Road to empowerment: Stepping into the unknown alone is undeniably a huge feat as much as it is a daunting endeavour. However, to fully understand the importance of solo travelling and the wonders it brings to the soul, let’s first explore the top three benefits to embrace solo travelling.

1. Build independence and problem-solving skills

Communication barriers, and being lost and seeking directions are examples of problems you will inevitably encounter along the way. But facing it face-first on your own will drive you to push past your insecurities and … by hook or by crook, learn to fend for yourself. The skills and lessons learned along the way are life-long and valuable, and most definitely indisposable.

2. Seize the world with confidence

Conquering your fears and becoming progressively self-aware through your solo-travels fuels your confidence as you come to fully understand your strengths and weaknesses when put in difficult situations. By honing and sharpening your strengths, you’ll learn to love and embrace your true self and strut your walk across the planet, confidently and boldly.

3. Empathy for others

On your solo journey, you are bound to meet individuals from all walks of life who carry with them a wealth of knowledge and history that project a kaleidoscope of colourful experiences. Solo travelling empowers you with the ability to communicate and, most importantly, empathise with those who hail from a different background. Understanding this allows you to develop an open mind, subjecting yourself to inspire and be inspired, to better understand the world, and ultimately help make the world a better place when you learn to love people different from you.

Baby steps: Frankly, we know that confidence and courage are not qualities that sprout overnight. So let’s set reasonable goals to kick-start your solo travelling endeavours. The key is to start small (and near). Below are the top five destinations recommended by Traveloka for women looking to embark on their solo travelling journey.

1. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Sometimes you don’t have to wander far for a solo adventure; sometimes adventure is right at your doorstep. As locals, we often overlook the “must-visits” that the world finds mesmerising in our own neighbourhood. Visit the world-famous Petronas Twin Towers and check it off your bucket-list for that spectacular view; jump on the Kuala Lumpur Hop-on Hop-off Bus to cover a variety of landmarks that you’ve never had the opportunity to visit in the past; and dine at a local coffee shop of your choice as you take your own sweet time, sipping on the sights, sounds and smells of KL city.

2. Hong Kong

From mountains to city parks and historical places, Hong Kong spoils travellers for choice with a wealth of attractions that are safe and friendly to all. Check out the world famous Madame Tussauds where you can hangout and take selfies with your favourite celebrities across 11 interactive zones; ride on Hong Kong’s first double-decker that combines sightseeing with gourmet dining on the Crystal Bus Sightseeing and Dining Tour; and of course the “not-to-be-missed” day spent with Disney’s famous characters at Hong Kong Disneyland.

3. Tokyo, Japan

The Land of the Rising Sun is a favourite among many tourists. Safe, cultural and respectful – Tokyo offers an unique experience to travellers, granting them the best of both worlds steeped in rich history and modern technology. Visit one of Japan’s best indoor theme parks, Sanrio Puroland and chill with famous characters such as Hello Kitty, Gudetama, Pom Pom Purin and more; immerse yourself in an authentic sumo practice show and get up close and personal with real sumo wrestlers; or learn Japanese recipes from a professional chef through a hands-on cultural experience, Japanese home cooking in Shibuya.

4. Seoul, Korea

This city boasts a rich history of culture and endless sightseeing options such as trendy stores and boutiques. If you appreciate beautiful scenery, N Seoul Tower is a must-visit for its 360-degree view of Seoul; don a hanbok, traditional Korean attire dating back centuries; or perhaps plan your trip around one of South Korea’s many festivals such as the Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival, the Hampyeong Butterfly Festival and more.

5. Melbourne, Australia

Melbourne is considered one of the best and safest destinations for female solo travellers down under. Classy, artsy, scenic and vintage: the cultural capital of Australia dazzles with verdant gardens, large parks, galleries, museum, extensive shopping and architecture. Join a day-tour to The Twelve Apostles for its breathtaking view of the limestone stacks off the shore in Great Ocean Road. Feeling a little sophisticated? Visit the vineyards of Yarra Valley for a taste of Australia’s top of the crop wines.

Travelling is meant to be a joyous and edifying experience when done the right way. Avoid taking shortcuts and getting short-changed.

Turn to credible resources such as Traveloka to find all your travel solutions under one roof to serve your needs to ease your travel concerns.

International Women’s Day should be celebrated every day. Traveloka believes that everyone deserves to – and must – travel in their lifetime to fully embrace the wonders of the world. “Solo travelling though much to offer is, however, the road less travelled,” said Khun Tee.

“As the leading travel tech company, our duty is to empower people with the right tools and technology to enable mobility, empower individuals, and achieve dreams to add meaningful years to [their] lives. Because a life less travelled is a life less inspired, and a world less understood,” said Khun Tee.

Travellers can visit Traveloka’s “Attraction & Activities” feature on its booking platform (via web or mobile) that helps to make planning easier and more convenient for all.

SET uptrend ‘to continue after poll’

THE NATION

THE THAI stock market is still in an upward trend this year, thanks to positive developments in the global financial market, and the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) Index should rebound after the election, provided there is no political turmoil, an expert predicted yesterday.

“For investors, it is not important which political party forms the new government, as long as it can offer stability and there is no political turmoil,” said Paiboon Nalinthrangkurn, chairman of the Federation of Thai Capital Market Organisation (Fetco).

Paiboon was speaking yesterday at the “Thai Stock Insight, Impact of the Election” event organised by Krungthep Turakij, a sister newspaper of The Nation.

He explained that as long as the political system in the Kingdom remains uncertain – as it has been over the past few years due to elections being postponed several times – only short-term investments will flow in.

Short-term investments mean a temporary inflow of capital, resulting in investors only seeking to gain short-term profits before pulling out their funds, he explained.

Also, he added, foreign investors are particularly worried that the new government would be weak, which could lead to political unrest.

“Investment in the stock market has been relatively low in the months leading to the election, with the potential for last-minute gains for election speculation,” Paiboon said.

In January, the SET Index closed at 1,641.73 points, showing a 5 per cent rise compared to December. This was largely due to the Election Commission announcing the election date in late January, said Soraphol Tulayasathien, senior executive vice president and chief of corporate strategy division for the SET.

The SET Index closed at 1,653.48 points at the end of February, showing a slight month-on-month increase, but closed at only 1,630.12 points last Friday.

However, Paiboon forecast that if the political situation remained stable after the election, the SET would follow global financial market trends and register gains throughout the second half of 2019.

He had also predicted earlier this year that the SET Index would reach 1,782 points by the end of 2019.

“The key factor affecting global market trends positively is the relaxation of monetary policies by key financial institutions,” he continued. “The US Federal Reserve, the People’s Bank of China, the Bank of England and the European Central Bank have all started showing signs of a change in attitude towards monetary policy.”

Paiboon pointed out that central banks across the world had increased interest rates in 2018, but this trend will likely reverse in 2019. The US Fed’s announcement that it will be “more careful” with monetary policies has boosted investor sentiments, leading to a positive trend in the global financial market.

“The US Federal Reserve is the most powerful financial institution, and its shift in attitude towards monetary policy is enough to have a significant impact on the global financial markets, including Thailand,” he said.

Hence, last year’s trend of capital inflow into the bond market and outflow from the stock market would likely reverse this year, he said.

“Thailand is a part of this financial trend, but the SET has been underperforming, partially due to political uncertainty. Though capital from both local and foreign investors is ready to flow into the Thai stock market, we will have to wait and see if the political situation remains stable after the election,” he contended.

E-commerce, tech expected to drive SME  logistics growth in emerging markets: survey

Economy March 11, 2019 17:33

By The Nation

Research, undertaken as part of the “Agility Emerging Markets Logistics Index 2019” jointly produced by Transport Intelligence and Agility, highlights e-commerce and technology as key factors for faster SME growth in emerging markets for logistics providers.

SME (small and medium-sized enterprise) shippers are typically associated with higher margins than large shippers.

Winning additional business from SMEs has been an ambition of many of the world’s largest logistics service providers, with the widespread rollout of online freight quotation and booking platforms renewing the focus.

However, with e-commerce making sales to international markets easier, and technology being used to reduce the complexity of global trade, it is conceivable that SMEs will see both factors act as drivers in their growth over the coming years, the research states.

Utilising technology to modernise customs systems and processes will be the most important factor in facilitating emerging-markets trade growth over the next five years, according to survey respondents.

The survey is part of the “2019 Agility Emerging Markets Logistics Index”, the 10th annual snapshot of industry sentiment and ranking of the world’s 50 leading emerging markets, produced by UK-based Transport Intelligence and Switzerland-headquartered Agility.

The index is a broad gauge of countries’ competitiveness based on their international and domestic logistics strengths and business fundamentals.

It ranks 50 countries by factors that make them attractive to logistics providers, freight forwarders, shipping lines, air-cargo carriers and distributors.

The top 10 in this year’s survey are: China, India, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Qatar, Turkey and Vietnam.

China, India and Indonesia rank highest for domestic logistics, while China, India and Mexico are tops for international logistics, and the UAE, Malaysia and Qatar have the best business fundamentals.

Defi offers businesses big-data tips on credit risks

Nearly 400 million people in Southeast Asia will gain access to banking systems in the coming decades, and good data is crucial to achieve such goal, says Katherine Shen, CEO and co-founder of Defi.

For lending institutions, the current data collection process is expensive, inefficient and full of privacy concerns, Shen noted.

An increasing need to assess creditworthiness against the backdrop of secure and authentic data nonetheless presents unique opportunities to entrepreneurs to deploy innovative solutions.

She described Defi as a highly anticipated project that makes authentic and reliable credit-risk data available to lenders.

Its system allows multiple lending institutions to pool their borrowers’ data through a highly secure cross-enterprise data collaboration platform.

The underlying blockchain-based protocol ensures that the data is decentralised and not owned by a single party.

The platform also utilises trusted computing technology which takes privacy and information security protection to the next level. This creates ideal conditions for lending institutions to extract value from data securely.

With data from more than 10 million borrowers in Southeast Asia, Defi is cementing partnerships at a rapid pace.

Lending companies, by plugging their data to the system, benefit too in the form of rewards and free queries on borrowers’ credit background.

But Defi is not satisfied with just this, Shen said. She wants to launch a product suite for both lending institutions and individuals.

“We already have more than a million fraud-data items in the network. In the coming months, we will launch more products and platforms that will enable lenders to identify over-borrowers, calculate credit scores using scientifically advanced and flexible models, and identify product fit for specific customers using big data.

“We are also working on data-wallet apps for individuals to make available a wide range of financial services,” Shen said.

Asean trade window tops agenda

CONCLUDING THE Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) negotiations and fully implementing the Asean Single Window (ASW) for all 10 Asean members by the end of this year are Thailand’s two top economic priorities as Asean chair, according to a senior official from the Commerce Ministry’s Department of Trade Negotiations (DTN).

“To counter the rise of protectionism around the world and mitigate the negative impacts of the US-China trade war, completing the RCEP negotiations by the end of this year as Asean chair is one of the Commerce Ministry’s top economic priorities,” said Auramon Supthaweethum, director-general of the DTN.

When negotiations are concluded, RCEP will be the largest multilateral trade pact in history – encompassing China, India, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and the 10 Asean nations. The combined gross domestic product of prospective RCEP members accounts for up to 28 per cent of global GDP and as much as 30 per cent of the value of world trade, she said during a press briefing on cross border Asean trade through the Asean Single Window at the Sadao Customs House in Songkhla.

There are a total of 20 chapters in the RCEP negotiations, seven of which were completed last year. Thailand aims to conclude the remaining 13 chapters this year, ranging from trade in goods and services, investment liberalisation, rules of origin, intellectual property regulations to e-commerce competition regulations, according to the department.

“This year, there are four rounds of negotiations at the minister level, and another four at the director-general level,” Auramon said. “We will first deal with chapters deemed easier to reach an agreement .”

“One such chapter involves e-commerce competition regulations. It aims to increase the convenience of trade through e-commerce between RCEP countries,” she said during a sideline interview.

Another priority issue is to make sure that all 10 Asean members are using the Asean Single Window (ASW) by end of the year, Auramon told reporters.

ASW will integrate the different single-window systems of Asean member countries via electronic exchange of trade-related documents to expedite cargo clearance and boost cross-border trade. ASW aims to digitise the certificate of origin, known as ‘Form D’.

Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Indonesia have implemented the ASW since the beginning of last year.

Before it was first implemented in the five Asean countries, goods being traded between them required a physical certificate of origin to receive benefits under the Asean Free Trade Agreement (Afta).

However, some border posts in the Asean region still lack authority to approve the certificate, with goods being stranded at the crossing by up to 10 days before the document is issued by the relevent authority, Auramon stated.

“The ASW will digitise Form D. We expect the use of an electronic Form D through the ASW gateway to reduce the waiting time at the borders to one to three days,” she said.

“Three countries – Philippines, Cambodia and Brunei – are currently in the final stage of testing the ASW, and will join the integrated system this year,” the director-general explained.

“Laos and Myanmar present the biggest challenge to our goal as they are still in the development stage,” she added.

“In January and February, officials from the Thai Customs Department visited Laos and Myanmar to offer guidance and support in developing the ASW,” she said.

“Going forward, Thailand as Asean chair will continue to provide guidance and support to the two member nations in a push for complete implementation of the ASW this year”.

SET FACES RISKS OF CUT IN ESTIMATED EARNINGS

SET FACES RISKS OF CUT IN ESTIMATED EARNINGS

Economy March 11, 2019 01:00

In the past two weeks, foreign investors net sold Bt14 billion in Thai stocks, pressuring down the SET Index by 1.57 per cent due mainly to two factors.

First, the MSCI increased its weight in Chinese equities from 5 per cent to 20 per cent on a gradual basis, leading to other Asian stock markets being underweighted.

The other being the lower-than-expted net earnings of listed companies in the fourth quarter of 2018 at Bt155 billion, compared to the earlier estimate of Bt250 billion.

This week, the SET Index will likely be volatile, moving between 1,620-1,660 points with the major issue being possible cuts in other listed companies’ earnings estimates.

We also expect the baht to strengthen against the dollar from Bt33 to Bt32.

Adjustment will likely be made to provision for employee benefits after amendment to the labor law – an expense of about Bt27 billion to Bt28 billion in profit/loss statements, among other changes.

Initially, listed companies’earnings per share ( EPS) has been cut from Bt112.2 to Bt104-Bt106.

By maintaining the market price to earnings ratio at 16 times, the SET Index is targeted at below 1,700 points, meaning relatively low upside.

Clearer signals from the US-China trade war have been partly priced in. If the negotiations are delayed or end with an unexpected outcome, it could create pressure.

Meanwhile, domestic politics is not expected to have a major impact on the stock exchange , provided the election schedule for March 24 remains unchanged.

Amid market volatility and limited upside, we prefer high dividend stocks with low Beta.

Our picks: LH, EASTW, TTW.

INDEX PAST POLITICALLY

SENSITIVE PERIOD

Last week was bad for export figures, starting with the US trade deficit rising to US$59.8 million in December and about $620 billion for 2018, a 20.7 per cent decline year on year in China’s exports in February due to trade uncertainty and the New Year |holidays, and a 4.7 per cent drop |year on year in Thailand’s January exports.

The US trade deficit is expected to push President Donald Trump into finalising the trade negotiations with China on March 27.

After last-week’s pressure from ex-divident signs on big caps such as PTT, BCP and BH, the ECB’sut of the estimated euro-one economic growth and dissolution of the Thai Raksa Chart party have led to a positive view on the SET this week.

In the next period, investors will likely be focusing on political stability after the election and outcome of the US-China trade talks, widely expected to be positive.

We recommend these groups:

1 Stocks with growth prospects and upside but trading at lower forward price to earnings (PE) than the past averages: SAWAD (Fwd PE@15.63x), ERW (Fwd PE@27.15x), GLOBAL (Fwd PE@27.67x), COM7 (Fwd PE@20.63x), MEGA (Fwd PE@19.62x).

2 Stocks with dividend yields higher than 4 per cent: TISCO, HANA, KKP.

The European Union (EU) and UN Women jointly launched a three-year WeEmpower Asia programme on Friday to encourage the private sector to expand economic participation and business opportunities for women in seven Asian countries: Thailand, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Vietnam.

Funded by the EU, UN Women will implement an €8 million (Bt284.9 million) programme aiming to integrate gender concerns into business practices in the region. UN Women is the more commonly used term for an arm of the UN called the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women.

The goal of the programme is to achieve three major objectives: promote dialogue among women’s groups – and discussions in both the public and private sectors – so as to enable an environment that empowers women; provide skills training for female entrepreneurs to engage with businesses, policy-makers and decision-makers; and support companies to adopt what the two organisations are calling “Women’s Empowerment Principles”.

“Women’s economic empowerment is a pre-requisite for inclusive and equitable economic growth,” said Ambassador Mara Marinaki, the EU’s Principal Advisor on Gender. “It can drive gender equality outcomes and broader intergenerational benefits for women, their children, households and communities.

“Women who are economically empowered have greater access to income and economic assets, better control over their own economic gains and more equitable decision-making power to translate these gains into social, economic and health benefits for themselves, their families and their societies.

Anna-Karin Jatfors, UN Women’s Acting Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, said: “Women make crucial contributions to the region’s economies. WeEmpower Asia will create transformative partnerships between private sector companies, female entrepreneurs and women-led businesses, and policymakers to drive social change. It will benefit not only women, but also societies and economies as a whole.”

The EU and UN Women are already working together on women’s economic empowerment in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as at G7 level, under two other programmes that are being implemented simultaneously: “Win-Win ¬- Gender equality means good business” and “WeEmpower – promoting economic empowerment of women at work through responsible business conduct”.

These programmes and WeEmpower Asia launched on Friday are concrete examples of EU’s commitment to gender equality and are its response to an increasingly global movement that urges companies, suppliers and consumers to work together to strengthen the voice and participation of women at work.
