As the new academic year approaches, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University unveils its award-winning Taicang campus to students, staff and the public on September 5. XJTLU Entrepreneur College (Taicang), established in 2019, will be moving to the new campus.

Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University officially opens Taicang campus, the new home of XJTLU Entrepreneur College (Taicang)

The campus was made possible with help and investment from the local Taicang government and will eventually be able to support up to 10,000 students and 1,200 staff members.

It was designed with entrepreneurialism, industry, interdisciplinarity and the community in mind. The main building has a circular structure linking its magnet-shaped schools, connecting them physically and symbolically.

Professor Stuart Perrin, Associate Principal of XJTLU Entrepreneur College (Taicang), says: “I’m excited about how the campus will bring together staff and students from different schools. Every space is a potential learning space.”

Professor Youmin Xi, Executive President of XJTLU, says: “This opening marks the College becoming a bigger part of the Taicang community and the industry-community-university ecosystem.”

In addition to XJTLU’s partnership with the local government, the College features industry partners for each school, giving students a unique learning environment and experience.

ECOVACS, a robotic vacuum cleaner company, is one of the College’s partners. Liang Zhao, Dean of Research Institute of Innovation Ecology at ECOVACS, believes the industry-supported labs will “provide fertile soil for developing cutting-edge scientific research projects and innovation technologies.”

Xiang Ao, manager of Xingwen Zhijiao Company, a branch of partner Haier Group, says the College combines a love of learning with hands-on experience. “When our corporate engineers go to the College to teach, they find that the students actively ask questions, and our engineers actively help them solve their queries.”

In addition to guest lectures from experts, the College arranges site visits and internships for students.

Tianhe Sun, Year Three student in BEng Data Science and Big Data Technology with Contemporary Entrepreneurialism, says: “I secured my second internship thanks to Taicang’s Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Hub courses. Learning here is different – we can get real-world experience.”

Malaysian student Adrian Heng Hwa Onn, a Year Three student in the same programme, says: “When I first came to XJTLU’s SIP campus, I was impressed with the gorgeous architecture and well-equipped facilities. But I’m more excited about studying in Taicang. I mean, who doesn’t want to be a part of something new?”

Honda in quest for young inventors to join the "18th Honda Super Idea Contest 2022"

When it comes to a project or activity that promotes and encourages creativity and imagination in youth and is considered an inspiring way for young people to pursue their dreams, it must be the “Honda Super Idea Contest.”

Honda Automobile (Thailand) Company Limited has continually held this contest for the past 17 years, during which over 430,000 students across the country in grades 1 to 6 submitted creative ideas based on their dreams and imaginations, designing future inventions that are fun, creative, and benefit society.

This year, Honda is holding the contest for the 18th time under the theme “Creating Ideas, Making a Melody of Dreams, Promoting Imagination in Thai Kids to Go Places Worldwide.”

The contest is open for entries for creative ideas from children across the country from 30 July 2022 until 30 September 2022. More details are available at http://www.facebook.com/hondasuperidea

Noriyuki Takakura, President and CEO of Honda Automobile (Thailand) Co., Ltd., said, “Honda believes the power of dreams can be the driving force for great success in creating innovations and new products that will bring a lot of happiness to people around the world. To encourage children’s dreams, creativity, and imagination, Honda has held the ‘Honda Super Idea Contest’ for eighteen consecutive years with an aim to search for young inventors, as we believe in encouraging and supporting children to unlock their infinite creative energy and strive to grow to become a major force in the future. Last year, the contest was held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic so Honda could continue to unleash children’s imaginations. We received around 5,723 entries for the contest, which is a positive response. This year’s winners will receive a royal plaque from Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn along with scholarships and the opportunity to go on a field trip to Japan in a cultural exchange to master new skills.”

Honda in quest for young inventors to join the "18th Honda Super Idea Contest 2022"

This year, the Honda Super Idea Contest 2022 is divided into four rounds:

Round 1: Draw a picture of your idea for an invention based on imagination onto an imaginary paper that can be downloaded at http://www.facebook.com/hondasuperidea or from Line: @superidea. The deadline for submission is September 3, 2022. Eighty works will be selected and announced to go to round two on October 31, 2022.

Round 2: Present your work from the imaginary paper in the form of a 3-to-5-minute video clip. You can submit this clip by November 11, 2022, with fifteen entries selected for the final round. The results will be announced on November 18, 2022.

Round 3: The Super Idea Super Camp activity that takes place on November 26 & 27, 2022 provides opportunities for children to develop their creative skills and learn about the principles of science and art from expert speakers. It provides a foundation for the 15 finalists to build a model of their selected ideas, which will be initially funded for presentation in the final round.

Round 4: The final round of the Honda Super Idea Contest 2022 Kids Krahuem Lok project takes place on  December 17, 2022. All fifteen finalists are required to make a 3-to-5-minute presentation of their idea together with a mock-up of the prototype. They must then answer questions about their idea in front of a panel of three qualified members. The winners will be selected, with the first-place winner receiving a royal plaque from Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn plus a 10,000-baht scholarship, while the five runners-up will each receive a plaque. All top six entrants who receive the awards will have a chance to go on a field trip to Japan.*

There is also an “Inspiring Teachers to Support Kids’ Ideas” workshop that aims to generate creative ideas to inspire teachers to help motivate their students to develop their own creative ideas and efficiently create inventive works based on their imaginations. Two teachers of the students who submit their ideas and become finalists in the contest will be selected to receive “Best Inspiring Teacher” awards. These two teachers will also have the opportunity to join the field trip to Japan with the students who won the contest.

Through the project, it offers elementary school students across the country to submit their ideas for future inventions that are fun, creative, and beneficial to society and a chance to win the royal plaque of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and an award for a field trip to Japan. In Thailand, quality youth work can be a tool for young people’s rights and development

Youth Work can advance young people’s rights and development in Thailand.

In Thailand, quality youth work can be a tool for young people’s rights and development

Youth activist Chonlachat “Max” Panthong, who spent time between the ages of 17 and 24 in a juvenile detention centre, knows all too well about how young people can be left out of decision-making on their own lives.

“We experienced difficulty finding jobs after release, [so] we proposed many ideas on how to better help youth living in detention centres survive in the outside world, but Thai bureaucracy is conservative. Release from the centre is more like a drop off. We were just let go with no help,” he said.

Max wants to see this gap, systemic and generational, between young people and adults bridged. The key, he said, is to strike a balance between making youth feel heard and providing them with mentorship, but too often youth are on the receiving end when interacting with adults.

Introducing youth work in Thailand

Kyungsun Kim, UNICEF Representative for Thailand, said while young people face a number of social issues, they are also eager for the opportunity to make a positive impact in their communities.

“They are asking for their voices to be heard and their contributions recognized, but they also need our support to make this happen,” Kim said.

That is why UNICEF is helping to introduce the concept of “youth work” in Thailand as a tool for helping young people develop socially and participate in decision-making.

“Youth work as a professional sector is a new concept in Thailand,” said Vilasa Phongsathorn, Adolescent Development Officer at UNICEF Thailand. “Under the umbrella of social work, youth work means creating opportunities for young people to make their own decisions, shape their future and develop the skills for navigating the personal and social challenges they face. Mentoring or after school programmes, sports or recreational activities as well as social activism all fall under youth work, in which young people can participate and develop through ‘out-of-school’ learning activities.”

Youth work is not only crucial for young people in detention centres like Max – the challenges presented by COVID-19, Thailand’s ageing society and the rise of automation also highlight the necessity of youth work on a national scale, Vilasa added.

At the webinar “Catalyzing Youth Engagement in Thailand: Knowledge Sharing Seminar with Global Experts on the Concept of Youth Work” co-hosted by UNICEF and the Thailand Professional Qualification Institute (TPQI), experts shared experiences in implementing youth work in their countries. They also discussed how best to introduce youth work under Thailand’s social, cultural and political context.

Professionalization will be crucial for developing youth work, said Tim Corney from Victoria University and the Australian Youth Workers Association. This can help improve the quality and safety of youth work, regulate youth work professions and ensure that young people themselves can benefit, he noted.

Sara Sušanj from Association Delta, a civil society organisation in Croatia, added that regulating youth work as a profession will help establish criteria for quality and a Code of Ethics as well as youth work programmes in higher education. This will allow youth workers, who work to support young people in reaching their full potential at local charities, faith groups or social services, to develop professionally. Ultimately, “young people will benefit from it the most,” said Sušanj.

What could youth work look like in Thailand?

Youth work looks different in every country. As Thailand builds its own identity of youth work, a clear structure for cooperation among all levels and stakeholders will be important. To professionalize youth work, experts agree that the best approach is localization – for which “we need to consider the realities of Thailand and its young people in the 21st century,” said Williamson.

UNICEF is partnering with TPQI to develop a common understanding of youth work and professional standards for its practice in Thailand, providing youth workers with the specialized knowledge, skills and values to work with and for young people in their community, particularly the most marginalized.

Miss Oh, a social work student and advocate for the rights of stateless and migrant children in Thailand, noted that through differentiating youth work from social work, the diverse needs of marginalized youth could be best understood and addressed.

“I think co-creation and a youth-centric approach is what differentiates youth work from social work. To professionalize youth work is to make working with young people more effective.”

Case studies from other countries show that the youth work sector in Thailand will need to speak with a clear and united voice if it is to achieve the status of a professional group and receive crucial political support. Fortunately, one of the main strengths of youth work is its emphasis on partnership, through drawing links between young people and different sectors, such as the local community, social services and formal education.

In Singapore, youth work enjoys government support via the National Youth Council as well as from the non-governmental sector. It is practised through a range of informal learning activities like rehabilitation, street outreach, sports, the arts and volunteering.

Experts from Malaysia shared the view that youth work should primarily be youth to youth. “We help develop young people – from being dependent to [becoming] interdependent with adults,” said Ismi Arif Ismail, a youth work academic from Universiti Putra and UCSI University in Kuala Lumpur.

In Finland, youth work services are integrated at the policy level. “Youth work is also mentioned in the National Core Curriculum as one of the cooperating partners for schools,” said Tomi Kiilakoski of Tampere University.

In these three countries, youth work is academically recognized, with university-level degrees and diplomas on offer.

In Austria, youth work has a strong standing in civil society and often involves political activism. Most youth organizations at the local, regional and national level have well-designed structures. The Federal Youth Representation Act is the basis for the financial support of youth work and the creation of the Austrian National Youth Council, which has “a say in all important political decisions,” said youth work practitioner Wolfgang Rauter.

Sharing her views on how youth work can develop in Thailand, migrant youth leader, Oh, said that our mindset needs to change, both for adults and young people.

“When youth propose their ideas, it is not a sign of disrespect to adults. The world is changing, and we also need to change. We have to look at things from the perspective of young people, and young people also need to understand the adults’ worldview.”

“Many things in Thailand are handled by adults, but youth can be more involved, for example, in policymaking. They will be the ones who will live with that policy for the next 10 or 20 years, and youth work can offer a solution for supporting young people to realize their full potential and meaningfully participate in society,” she said.

He explained that We-Fly Aero, which is an institute that organises courses in aviation and aerospace business, will focus on building personnel as aircraft maintenance technicians in line with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency standards.
“This cooperation is also part of the development plan towards becoming a hub for the tourism industry and Logistics and Aviation, including being a ‘Metropolis Eastern Aviation’, the regional aviation hub,” he said.
Wefly Aero Chairman Chung Kuo Sung said the profession of “Aircraft Maintenance Technician” is another line of work that is about to face shortage like pilots.
Previously, the world’s largest aerospace company had estimated the global demand for aircraft maintenance personnel in the next 20 years would rise to more than 600,000 people.
