South Korean office workers turn to convenience stores as ‘lunch-flation’ bites

Offering cheap instant noodles, sandwiches and meal boxes for under $5, convenience stores in South Korea are gaining in popularity as salaried workers seek ways to cut costs.

South Korean office workers turn to convenience stores as 'lunch-flation' bites

An employee in a Seoul convenience store restocks an empty shelf with ready-to-eat meal boxes, working quickly before the lunchtime rush of hungry office workers.

One such customer is Park Mi-won, 62, an office worker who had never bought her lunch from a convenience store, until her favourite lunch buffet recently raised prices by more than 10% to 9,000 won ($7) spurred by inflation which has soared to a 14-year high.

“After prices went up, I started going to convenience stores instead, where I think the prices are more reasonable while the food also tastes good,” said Park over her convenience store rice roll lunch.

“So now I come here often, about two to three times a week,” she said.

Global food prices surged 23% last month from a year before, according to an agricultural arm of the United Nations. The war in Ukraine has impacted supplies of grains from there and Russia and caused energy and fertiliser prices to soar.

South Korean convenience shop chain GS25 posted more than 30% increases in sales of instant meals in January-May versus a year ago. Seeing increasing demand, GS25 has also launched a new meal subscription service for office workers, which comes with price discounts and deliveries directly to offices.

Fellow competitors including CU and 7-Eleven have seen similar surges in demand, while Emart24 saw a 50% jump in lunch-box sales in areas with many office blocks.

The gains came as the prices of restaurant dishes in South Korea rose 7.4% last month compared with a year earlier, the fastest pace in 24 years, according to government statistics.

Dubbed “lunch-flation”, the price of beloved dishes such as “galbitang” or beef soup with rice, jumped 12.2%, according to Korea Consumer Agency data.

Lee Sang-jae, who runs a galbitang restaurant in Seoul’s central district has already raised prices twice this year, and now a bowl costs 12,000 won ($9.35) instead of 10,000 ($7.79).

“I am giving up some of my profit margins, as I also have to consider office workers’ tight budgets these days, so I only raised the prices a little in sharing the pain with them,” he said.

Lunch is considered a social activity for office workers. They go to restaurants with friends and colleagues for longer than the allotted hour to socialise. But with rising prices, relying on convenience stores for meals and eating these meals alone for lunch is becoming a common sight.

While many small restaurants are still benefiting from a bounce-back in evening dining after months of COVID-induced social distancing rules, economists warn prolonged pressure on consumer prices will weigh on consumption. Real purchasing power is bowing to fierce inflationary pressure, they say, and people will continue to find ways to reallocate their resources.

Temperatures in San Antonio climbed to 101 degrees Fahrenheit (38.3 degrees centigrade) on Monday, while the heat in a packed trailer was likely way higher than that, according to the U.S. National Weather Service.

Death toll of migrants found inside 18-wheeler in U.S. Texas rises to 50

The death toll of migrants found on Monday inside a “cloned” and abandoned 18-wheeler in San Antonio, a major city in south central U.S. state Texas, has risen to 50, authorities said on Tuesday.   The tragedy appeared to be one of the deadliest migrant-smuggling operations in recent U.S. history, local media reported.

Forty-six people were found dead at the scene and four others were later pronounced dead at area hospitals, Texas Public Radio reported, citing Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard.

Ebrard said 22 were Mexican nationals, seven were from Guatemala, two were from Honduras, and the remaining 19 dead have not yet been identified.

At least 16 others, including four children, were taken to area hospitals due to heat exhaustion and dehydration, local officials said at a news conference. Nearly 100 people were reportedly packed inside the trailer of the 18-wheeler.

The San Antonio Express-News reported that someone “cloned” the truck carrying the migrants with the same color and identifying numbers from the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Texas DOT as a truck owned by a South Texas trucking company, in an apparent move to evade authorities.

Three people are in police custody, but it’s unclear if they are involved in the tragedy, San Antonio Police Chief William McManus told a briefing Monday night.

Police received a call on Monday evening from a person working nearby, who heard a cry for help from the 18-wheeler in the southwest of the city, approached and saw bodies inside the trailer with its doors partially open, said McManus.

Those who were found alive were hot to the touch and suffering from heat stroke and exhaustion, and there was no sign of water in the refrigerated tractor-trailer and no visible working air conditioning unit, according to San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood.

Temperatures in San Antonio climbed to 101 degrees Fahrenheit (38.3 degrees centigrade) on Monday, while the heat in a packed trailer was likely way higher than that, according to the U.S. National Weather Service.

“Migrants seeking asylum should always be treated as a humanitarian crisis, but this evening we’re facing a horrific human tragedy,” San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg tweeted on Monday.

Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott, who is seeking a second term, on Monday night slammed U.S. President Joe Biden for the tragedy, tweeting: “These deaths are on Biden. They are a result of his deadly open border policies.”

In July 2017, 10 migrants died in a packed truck carrying 39 people in San Antonio.

Macron tells Biden that UEA, Saudi can barely raise oil output

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday the Crown Prince of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed (MbZ), told him two top Opec oil producers, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, can barely increase oil production.

Macron tells Biden that UEA, Saudi can barely raise oil output

“Ihad a call with MbZ,” Macron was heard telling U.S. President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the G7 summit.

“He told me two things. I’m at a maximum, maximum (production capacity). Second, he told me…the Saudis can increase a little bit, 150 (thousands barrels per day) or a little bit more. They don’t have huge capacities at this stage,” Macron said.

Brent oil prices jumped by over $2 per barrel to above $115 per barrel on the news amid tight global supplies and rising demand.

Saudi Arabia and the UAE have been perceived as the only two countries in producer group the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and the world which still have some spare capacity and could help increase global deliveries.

The West is seeking ways to reduce Russian oil imports to punish Moscow for the invasion of Ukraine.

Saudi Arabia is currently producing 10.5 million bpd and has a nameplate capacity of 12.0 million-12.5 million bpd, which in theory shall allow it to raise production by 2 million.

The UAE is producing some 3 million bpd, has capacity of 3.4 million and has been working on raising it to 4 million bpd.

The news – as presented by Macron – would be bullish for oil markets if both OPEC heavyweights can barely raise output.

Europe is looking for ways to replace as much as 2 million bpd of Russian crude and some 2 million bpd of refined products it had been importing from Moscow before the Ukraine invasion.

13 people died and 251 were injured in a chlorine gas leak from a storage tank at Jordan’s Aqaba port, officials and state media reported on Monday, as authorities called on residents to shut windows and stay indoors.

13 dead, 251 injured in chlorine gas leak at Jordan's Aqaba port

The leak came after a tank filled with 25 tonnes of chlorine gas being exported to Djibouti fell while being transported, officials said.

A video posted on state television’s Twitter page showed a storage tank falling from a winch and slamming into the deck of a ship, followed by yellow-coloured gas rising into the air as people ran away.

City health authorities called on residents to close their windows and stay in their homes, according to state TV.

Specialized teams are still dealing with the leak, the Civil Defence service said on its Facebook page. Evacuation planes were being sent into Aqaba, state television said.

Prime Minister Bisher al-Khasawneh arrived at Aqaba and headed to a hospital where some of the injured were being treated, state TV reported.

Al-Khasawneh also formed an investigation team into the incident chaired by the interior minister, state TV cited the information minister as saying.

At least 46 migrants found dead in Texas truck

The bodies of 46 dead migrants were discovered inside a tractor-trailer on Monday in San Antonio, Texas, the city’s fire department said, in one of the most deadly recent incidents of human smuggling along the U.S.-Mexico border.

At least 46 migrants found dead in Texas truck

The truck was found next to railroad tracks in a remote area on the city’s southern outskirts and a San Antonio Fire Department official said they found “stacks of bodies” and no signs of water in the truck.

Sixteen other people found inside the trailer were transported to hospitals for heat stroke and exhaustion, including four minors, but no children were among the dead, the department said.

Temperatures in San Antonio, which is about 160 miles (250 km) from the Mexican border, swelled to a high of 103 degrees Fahrenheit (39.4 degrees Celsius) on Monday with high humidity.

The city’s Police Chief William McManus said a person who works in a nearby building heard a cry for help and came out to investigate. The worker found the trailer doors partially opened and looked inside and found a number of dead bodies.

McManus said there is now a federal investigation and that three people were in custody following the incident, though their involvement is not yet clear.

A spokesperson for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said that its Homeland Security Investigations division was investigating “an alleged human smuggling event” in coordination with local police.

The deaths once again highlight the challenge of controlling illegal migration across the U.S.-Mexico border. The issue has proven difficult for U.S. President Joe Biden, a Democrat who has pledged to reverse some of the hardline immigration policies of his Republican predecessor Donald Trump. Republicans have criticized Biden’s border strategy ahead of the midterm congressional elections in November.

Police Chief McManus said this was the largest incident of its kind in the city. In July 2017, ten migrants died after being transported in a tractor-trailer that was discovered by San Antonio police in a Wal-Mart parking lot.

An Indonesian villager captured a crocodile measuring more than four metres using a rope fearing it might threaten the lives and livelihoods of himself and his neighbours.

Indonesian villager catches 4.3 meter crocodile using a rope

Avideo of Usman, who like many Indonesians has only one name, and his son wrangling the massive crocodile using a thin rope on Saturday went viral in Indonesia.

According to the 53-year-old villager, the crocodile had been roaming around his village, Ambau Indah in South Sulawesi province for at least two days before he decided to take action.

“If we had left it, it would have come onto land and we wouldn’t be able to go into the rice fields. It could be dangerous. There are also gutters around the road here, places where locals fish. It would be dangerous if it crawls up the gutter. I had to take a chance,” he said.

The crocodile was found to be 4.3 metres by the local Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA).  BKSDA staff loaded the gigantic crocodile onto the back of a truck to take it away to be released back into the wild in a less populated area.

An estimated 1,000 Volkswagen Beetles drove through the streets of Mexico City on Sunday showing their love for the classic vehicle.

Parade of Volkswagen Beetles cruise Mexico City streets

The 13th annual edition of the Beetle parade, organised by different fan clubs in the Mexican capital, commemorates the celebration of the popular vehicle on June 22.

The “bug,” or “vocho,” as the Beetle was nicknamed, debuted in 1938 as an affordable vehicle commissioned by Adolf Hitler to promote car ownership among Germans.

With its recognisable design and inexpensive price, the car became a success story over subsequent decades and was one of the top-selling models of all time as well as the best-selling import in the United States in the 1960s, according to auto publications.

Despite its place in popular culture, sales of the Beetle had been lacklustre in recent years. The German automaker announced in 2018 that the Beetle would go extinct.

“It is something that will never be repeated, no car is going to take its place,” VW Beetle enthusiast, Roberto Martinez told Reuters.
