Google Crowing About Lampang’s Iconic Rooster Bowl Today

The Lampang Rooster Bowl Is Crowing On Thai Google Today As The Search Engine Honours The Iconic Tableware’s Ninth Birthday As A Globally Recognised Product.

The cockerel-adorned bowls – which are popular across Asia – were registered as a Geographical Indication (GI) product of the northern province on this day in 2013.

Google Thailand is marking the occasion with a Google Doodle featuring an animated rooster running across the surface of the bowl.

Previous Thai events celebrated with a unique Google Doodle include Songkran, National Teachers’ Day, Loy Krathong, and Thai Language Day.

The Thai Intellectual Property Department has so far registered 152 Geographical Indication patents for products nationwide. They include 18 rice varieties, 30 local dishes, 73 fruits or vegetables, 11 types of cloth, 18 handicrafts and industrial products, and two liquors.

The first recorded producer of Lampang rooster bowls was Simyu sae Chin, who discovered white kaolin clay at Ban Pang Kha village in Lampang’s Chae Hom district.

He noticed that the clay was the same type used in China to make bowls.

As a result, Simyu set up the first ceramics factory in Lampang, making bowls with the same techniques as used in China.

He decorated the products with rooster and flower patterns and sold the ceramic bowls in Lampang and other provinces.

With their traditional design of a rooster with black tail and legs walking on green fields, the Lampang bowls quickly spread to all corners of the country.

But as the years passed, people began using other types of bowls, prompting ceramic factories to shut down in the northern province.

The few remaining factories formed an association of Lampang ceramic makers to ensure that the famed rooster bowls strut on into the future.

Bad Weather Forces Chiang Mai National Park To Close

Chiang Mai’s Ob Khan National Park Closed Its Doors To Tourists On Monday In Response To Fears Of Flash Floods And Landslides.

The national park, which spans 484 square kilometres across the districts of Samoeng, San Pa Tong, Hang Dong and Mae Wang, announced that it was closing until the situation returns to normal.

The Thai Meteorological Department has announced that most of Thailand will be hit by heavy rain on Monday and warned people to beware of flash floods and overflows, especially along the foothills near waterways and lowlands.

One of the famous attractions in Ob Khan National Park is Khun Tian, the highest peak at 1,550 metres above sea level that features panoramic views of the park, the adjacent Doi Suthep-Pui National Park to the east, and Mae Wang National Park and Doi Inthanon National Park to the west.

Covid-19 Shortened Life Expectancy By Two Years: UN Report

Human Life Expectancy Was Shortened By Two Years Mainly Because Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, A Respiratory Disease Expert Said, Citing A UN Study.

Dr Manoon Leechawengwongs, a respiratory and critical care specialist at Bangkok’s Vichaiyut Hospital, cited the report titled “Uncertain times and unsettled lives”, which is part of the Human Development Index (HDI) 2021 report of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Manoon said the report, which was presented by the UN on September 8, found that human life expectancy had dropped from 73 in 2019 to 71.4 in 2021.

The report also pointed out that the average educational level and average standard of living had also deteriorated because of the pandemic.

The report found that global GDP had dropped during 2020 to 2021, causing the global HDI to decline by five years, Manoon said.

He said the HDI scores had been improving for 30 consecutive years but the 2021 report showed a drop for the first time in 30 years.

Manoon said Covid had a more severe impact on human life than PM2.5 pollutants. As a result, he said people should get Covid vaccines or booster doses and always protect themselves by wearing flu masks and frequently wash their hands.

Heavy Rain Forecast For Most Of Thailand Today

Heavy To Very Heavy Rain Will Hit Most Of Thailand On Monday Thanks To The Moderate Monsoon Trough Lying Across The North, Upper Central And The East.

The low-pressure cell over southern Vietnam and southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea, the South and the Gulf of Thailand will also contribute to the wet weather, the Meteorological Department said.

Continuous rain can be expected across the country, while isolated heavy to very heavy rain is possible in the North, Northeast, Central region including Bangkok and its vicinity, the East and the east coast of the South.

People have been warned of flash floods and runoffs, especially along the foothills, near waterways and lowlands.

Temperature is expected to vary from lows of 22 to 26 degrees Celsius and highs of 28 to 34 degrees Celsius.

The east coast of the South will also be battered by metre-high waves, which will get higher in thundershowers. On the west coast, waves are expected to be above 2-metres high from Phuket upwards but will drop in size from Krabi downwards.

20 Navy Boats Sent To Rayong To Help Redirect Floods

The Royal Thai Navy Has Deployed A Fleet Of 20 Boats To Help Push Water From Prasae River Into The Gulf Of Thailand To Ease Flooding In Rayong’s Klaeng District.

Provincial governor Charnna Iamsaeng said the river had overflowed due to continuous heavy rain since Saturday and flooded several parts of the district.

The operation of pushing water towards the sea kicks off on Monday initially in Ban Na, Thung Khwai Kin and Thang Kwian subdistricts, which have been the worst hit.

Charnna added that as of Sunday evening, flooding on the Pho Thong-Ban Na Road, which connects the three subdistricts, had mostly subsided, allowing officials to distribute basic necessities among affected communities. So far, more than 2,000 survival kits have been distributed.

On Sunday, Thai Red Cross volunteers also arrived in Rayong’s Muang district and set up a cooking station to provide for flood victims evacuated from Klaeng district.

The Navy had also dispatched some 80 boats on Friday to push water from the Chao Phraya River into the sea to ease flooding in Greater Bangkok.

Vice Admiral Pokkrong Monthatpalin, Royal Thai Navy spokesman, said provincial governors can turn to the Navy for help by calling its 24-hour flood relief centre at 1696.

Urgent Actions Needed To Prevent Bangkok Going Underwater: Suchatvee

Defeated Bangkok Governor Candidate Suchatvee Suwansawat On Sunday Accused City Authorities Of Mismanaging Canal Drainage And Allowing Eastern Bangkok To Flood.

Suchatvee, who has an engineering PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), said the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration must take urgent action to prevent worse flooding. The senior Democrat Party politician said the BMA must discharge water from canals to allow floods to drain in eastern districts.

Writing on Facebook, Suchatvee said he was airing opinions as a Bangkok resident cut off by floods, not a politician.

He said mistakes in water management had left Lat Krabang Road flooded with no relief in sight.

“Now, I can’t leave home. If the water in Klong Prawet is not lowered or pumped out through Klong Phra Ong Jao, we will be underwater tomorrow,” Suchatvee said.

There were no flood sensors on Lat Krabang Road and no water pumps had been installed, he added.

He said Lat Krabang Road, Luang Paeng Road and Hua Ta Ke roads had been inundated for several days now.

He urged the BMA to take the following emergency actions:

– Deploy water pumps from districts not at risk to use on both sides of Lat Krabang, Luang Paeng and Hua Ta Ke roads. He said the roads are very long but few pumps were being used there. Worse still, officials were merely pumping floodwater back and forth without a comprehensive drainage plan.

– Urgently reduce water levels in Klong Prawet and tributary canals, which have been overflowing for three consecutive days. Suchatvee said the BMA strategy did not include lowering the levels of Klong Prawet and tributaries such as Klong Lam Pla Thiew, the main drainage network for eastern Bangkok. Their high water levels meant officials cannot drain floodwater from roads.

– Drain floodwaters via the Bang Pakong River in neighbouring Chachoengsao province.

– Open the Klong Prawet watergate to drain water via the Phra Khanong pumping station.

– Install flood sensors in Lat Krabang to allow timely water-management actions.

– Remove sandbags around drainage openings on Lat Krabang Road. The sandbags were not preventing water from coming out of sewers but instead stopping rainwater from draining, he said.

Govt Takes Credit As UN Ranks Thailand’s Human Development ‘High’ For 3rd Year

Thailand Saw “High Human Development” For The Third Consecutive Year According To The Latest United Nations Human Development Index (HDI), The Government Said On Sunday.

The HDI measures three criteria of human development – health, knowledge, and standard of living.

Thailand rose six places to 66th out of 191 countries in the 2021-2022 HDI issued by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Thursday.

The Kingdom scored 0.800 on the index, with life expectancy at 78.7 years, expected years of schooling at 15.9, and gross national income per capita of US$17,030 (about 619,000 baht).

Government spokeswoman Trisulee Trisaranakul said the news showed the government was making progress on improving life for Thais.

Thailand ranked fourth in Asean behind Singapore (0.939), Brunei (0.829), and Malaysia (0.803). Indonesia scored 0.705 followed by Vietnam (0.703), Philippines (0.699), Laos (0.607) and Myanmar (0.585).

The index has four tiers of human development: very high (0.8-1.0), high (0.7-0.79), medium (0.55-.70), and low (below 0.55).

Trisulee noted that Thailand has been in the high-very high tier since 2019.

“The fact that Thailand has received ‘high’ scores consecutively shows the government has been successful in implementing its policies by heeding advice from international organisations,” she said. She added that the government had taken advice from the UNDP in implementing its strategic development plans.

Exploding Chemicals Set Shophouse Ablaze In Chiang Mai

A Shophouse In Chiang Mai’s San Sai District Went Up In Flames On Saturday Evening When Agricultural Chemicals Stored Inside Exploded.

Police said nobody was injured in the incident, which took place at around 8pm near a petrol station on the new Mae Jo Road in Nong Jom subdistrict.

Residents living nearby and petrol station staff said they heard a huge explosion, followed by several others before the building was engulfed by flames.

It took firefighters and 10 fire engines about an hour to get the blaze under control.

Police later cordoned off the area and said a thorough check will be conducted on Sunday.

Chaiphan That-inchan, 50, came forward to tell police that he had rented the building to store fertiliser chemicals distributed by his company, Speed Agrosci Co Ltd.

He added that the chemicals stored did not include potassium chlorate, which is banned because it can explode.

Chaiphan reckons the fire had been caused by a short-circuit but is waiting for investigators to determine the cause.

A witness identified as Yik, 55, said he was heading to his motorcycle parked behind the shophouse when he heard one explosion with two more in quick succession. He said each explosion was accompanied by a large fireball shooting into the sky.

Petrol station staff also said debris and plastic containers began landing in their area, so the station was immediately closed down for safety.

Saturday Night Rains Worsen Flooding In Many Parts Of Bangkok

Heavy Rain On Saturday Night Aggravated The Flooding Crisis In Many Parts Of Bangkok, And Even Left The Basement Carpark Of A Condominium In Bang Khen District Under A Sea Of Water.

Bang Khen, Sai Mai and Don Muang districts were among the areas worst hit on Saturday night.

At 2.20am on Sunday, Ekkapop Luangprasert, founder of the “Sai Mai Tong Rod” (Sai Mai must survive) Facebook page went live on the platform to show how a basement carpark in a condominium on Theparak Road had been flooded, leaving many cars under water.

Ekkapop and other volunteers helped the condominium staff create an embankment and pump water out. The management said the condo had never been hit by such severe flooding before.

Meanwhile, residents of Pattanakarn Sois 65 and 69 said their communities were heavily flooded on Saturday night, with many complaining that water had entered their homes in the early hours of Sunday.

A resident in Soi Pattanakarn 65 Ext 15 said the water level continued rising even after rains stopped around 11pm. By 2am the resident’s ground floor was filled with water, which rose even higher an hour later. The area is close to a Klong Prawet canal tributary that had swollen and burst its banks.

The Thai Meteorological Department has forecast that heavy rain will continue hitting about 80 per cent of Bangkok due to the influence of a monsoon ridge passing over the North, upper Central and Northeast.
