No vehicles will be allowed on U Thong Nai Road near the old Parliament until further notice, the Metropolitan Police chief announced recently.

U Thong Nai Road closed to traffic, Din Daeng 1 made one-way

The order was issued by Metropolitan Police Bureau commissioner Pol Lt-General Samrarn Nualma in his capacity as Bangkok traffic police chief. Though the order was signed on April 18, it was published in the Royal Gazette on Saturday.

The same order also declared that Din Daeng 1 Road will only be open to one-way traffic from the Din Daeng intersection on Raja Prasong School’s side to the Jaturathit intersection.

The announcement said the aim of the order is to discourage speeding on roads and to protect pedestrians. The ban goes into effect on Sunday and will remain in place until the Bangkok traffic police issue a new order.

The announcement also said all previous orders related to these roads would be null and void.

The U Thong Nai Road starts from the equestrian King Rama V statue and runs until the Ratchawithi intersection where the headquarters of the Royal Initiative Volunteers is located.

The old Parliament complex, outside which protesters often camp out, and Chitralada Vocational School are also located on this road.

Motorists rush to fill up tanks ahead of diesel price hike

Motorists in Bangkok and other provinces flocked to petrol stations to fill up their fuel tanks on Saturday ahead of an increase in the price of diesel.

Motorists rush to fill up tanks ahead of diesel price hike

The price of diesel was hiked by 2 baht per litre on Sunday following a sharp rise in the global price of fuel, driven by the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

On Saturday night, the PTT station at Soi Phetkasem 81 in Bangkok’s Nong Khaem district was crowded with motorists waiting to refuel their vehicles.

Coastal fishermen, meanwhile, arrived at the same filling station to fill up the tanks on their trucks so they could later refuel their fishing boats, local media added.

The government on Saturday scrapped its policy of capping the price of diesel at 30 baht per litre. Sunday’s 2-baht rise was approved by the Fuel Fund Executive Committee on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the new price cap for diesel has been set at 35 baht per litre.

The committee will raise the price gradually by one baht each time over the coming months until it reaches the new ceiling.

The Energy Ministry said the Oil Fuel Fund spent about 50 billion baht to keep the price of diesel capped at 30 baht per litre. The government decided in April to scrap that ceiling to reduce pressure on the Oil Fuel Fund.

Jail, dismissal for Navy drill sergeant over ‘semen incident’

A Navy drill instructor found to have forced new conscripts to drink his semen is being detained for 30 days before he is dismissed from service, the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) announced on Saturday.

Jail, dismissal for Navy drill sergeant over ‘semen incident’

Petty Officer Thaksin Nogokpilai of the Royal Thai Marine Corp’s Security Regiment in Chonburi was slapped with 30-day detention for causing serious damage to RTN’s reputation, Navy Vice Admiral Pokkrong Monthatphalin said.

He added that once the detention period is complete, the officer will be dismissed from service as per RTN regulations.

The detainee’s two supervisors, meanwhile, have been ordered to observe the military-style “thamrong winai” punishment, which includes shaving their head, doing menial work and walking long distances dragging heavy weights or running with weights.

Thaksin’s immediate superior is being punished for 15 days, while the supervisor above him is getting seven days.

The incident occurred in October last year during a training session for a group of new conscripts at Chonburi’s Sattahip naval base.

A video clip of the incident went viral on social media and was picked up by Thai mainstream media, leading to a public outcry, which forced the Navy to investigate.

RTN offered an apology to the conscripts and their families but is maintaining that it respects human rights and has no policy of using violence in training.
