Lalisa “Lisa” Manoban will not be able to attend the New Year countdown event in Phuket, South Korean entertainment agency YG Entertainment made it clear on Thursday.

Astatement from the company said:

“Referring to the news that Lisa Lalisa Manoban has confirmed that she will participate in the New Year countdown event in Thailand, we are very grateful and honoured that such a proposal has appeared, but unfortunately Lisa will not be able to attend the event. We hope there is no confusion. Thank you.”

Earlier, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), with the private sector, had hoped to have Lisa grace Phuket’s New Year countdown event in a move to promote the province as a “world-class destination”.

Governor Yuthasak Supasorn said the idea struck TAT in late September, when the K-pop singer became the talk of the town after she gained added stardom following the release of her first solo video track “Lalisa”, which broke the Guinness record for the number of daily views and went on to earn her widespread fame and plaudits.

Yuthasak pointed out that an appearance by Lisa could draw tourists from around the world to Phuket, especially BlackPink fans and admirers who make up the so-called “Blink” universe.

Registration will soon be opened for singers and musicians who wish to perform at the “Street Music” event at Ong Ang Walking Street in Bangkok next month, the Culture, Sports and Tourism Department under the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) said on Thursday.

Department director Somboon Homnan said the event would be held during the Loy Krathong Festival from November 19 to 21 from 4pm to 10pm, covering the area from Damrong Sathit Bridge to Chao Phraya Sky Park.

“The event aims to support singers and musicians who have been affected by the Covid-19 crisis,” he pointed out.

Singers, musicians can register for Bangkok’s Street Music fest next month

Here are some details for interested registrants:

1. Singers and musicians can register as solo artistes or a band of no more than four members.

2. The duration of each performance is limited to two hours.

3. Registrants need to bring along their own musical instruments and equipment.

4. Participants must have received at least one Covid-19 vaccine jab.

5. Registrants can generate income from busking.

Singers and musicians can register from November 1-7 via Google Forms and will be informed of the results through e-mail or telephone.

Facebook sent a notification to its users on Thursday that everyone has 15 days to activate its all-important “Facebook Protect” feature and warned that failure to do so means users will be locked out of their accounts until the security feature is activated.

The “advanced security program” provides stronger account protection, according to the social media giant.

Here are nine steps of an easy guideline to activate the feature before the November 12 deadline:

1. Click on the menu bar (the three-line icon) and select “Settings”;
 
2. Select “Password and Security”;
 
3. Select “Facebook Protect”;
 
4. Press “Next” then “Next” again;
 
 5. Click on the “Fix Now” button on a page with a message read “We’ve checked your account for vulnerabilities”;
 
6. Press the “Turn On” button to turn on two-factor authentication;
 
7. Select a security method by clicking on the “Text message (SMS)” section;
 
8. Select the phone number and wait for the 6-digit code to be sent to the mobile phone. Then enter the code and press “Continue”;
 
9. It will appear that the two-factor authentication is on, press “Done”.

The latest batch of 1,538,550 doses of Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine arrived in Thailand on October 27, Department of Disease Control (DDC) director-general Dr Opas Karnkawinpong said on Thursday.

“So far, Thailand has received 8 million doses of Pfizer under the government’s plan to procure the mRNA vaccine for children aged over 12 and other target groups. Two million doses had been delivered in September and six arrived in October,” he revealed.

“These 8 million doses are in addition to the 1.5 million the United States government donated to Thailand.”

The DDC chief said that as of October 26, there are 4.3 million children aged 12 to 17 who have registered to get Pfizer shots with provincial communicable disease committees nationwide.

“The department has earmarked at least 5.7 million Pfizer doses for this group: 4.3 million for first jabs and 1.4 million for second shots,” he said.

“We have started vaccinating children since October 4 and more than 2 million doses have been administered,” Opas said.

“So far, less than ten cases of myocarditis/pericarditis have been reported among recipients, none of which has severe symptoms, and all patients have been treated,” he added.

Myocarditis/pericarditis, or heart inflammation, is a recorded side effect of the mRNA vaccine.

The Royal College of Paediatricians of Thailand reported that some boys aged 12-15 in the United States developed myocarditis – at 162.2 per 1 million doses – while for girls it had been only 13 cases per 1 million doses. Cases of myocarditis are rarely found in those who received only one mRNA vaccine shot.

“Even after getting the jabs, everyone must continue maintaining their guard against Covid-19 to create a safe environment for all, which include wearing a face mask, maintaining social distancing and washing your hands regularly,” Opas strongly advised.

The 25th Infantry Regiment has sent 120 illegal Myanmar workers from Ranong back to their country.

The regiment said the 120 had illegally entered the kingdom on misleading news spread by human traffickers that the Thai government would open registrations for work permits soon.

A human trafficking ring, which spread the false news, had transported the workers to Thailand.

The regiment had discussed the issue of illegal workers with the Myanmar attaché, who was on hand to observe the 120 being sent back to their country.

The attaché reportedly asked Myanmar to inform workers there that Thailand had not yet opened registrations for work permits and those caught entering the kingdom illegally would lose all their money given to traffickers and be jailed.

Meanwhile, the regiment said that the government and Army Chief General Narongpan Jitkaewtae had ordered it to solve the problem.

A 36-year-old motorcyclist along with a young girl, 12, shockingly identified by police as his “girlfriend”, died on the spot after speeding through a red light and crashing into a garbage truck on Wednesdays late night. Both had drugs in their possession.

The accident happened at Bangkok’s Soi On Nut 86.

Prawet police and rescuers rushed to the scene to find the motorcycle in a complete wreck, with the bodies of the man and the girl nearby.

The man, identified as Anupong Kaekmek, carried a gram of methamphetamine and a Smith & Wesson revolver in his bag, while the girl, identified as his “girlfriend”, had two cellphones and two packages of amphetamines on her body.

A garbage collector on the truck named Thanomchai Naksuk, 44, told police that Anupong sped past the red light before crashing at high speed into the rear of the truck.

BTS, BRT and Gold Line train services will resume normally from November 1, said Bangkok Mass Transit System director Surapong Laoha-Unya, adding that the resumption of normal services is in line with the government’s move to reopen the kingdom to foreign visitors from 46 “low-risk” countries.

He explained that the BTS, BRT and Gold Line will go back to normal operating hours from 6am to midnight, except for BTS Green Line stations in Samut Prakan and Pathum Thani, which will close at 11pm as these two provinces are not included in the government’s 17 tourism pilot areas.

He added that “park and ride” stations will also go back to normal opening times of 5am to 1am.

“The company is ready to provide transport services as our employees have been fully vaccinated and will take regular Covid-19 tests before performing their duties,” Surapong assured public commuters.

“In addition, the company will deploy 98 trains and undertake cleaning operations periodically in a bid to gain passenger confidence,” he added.

The National Innovation Agency (NIA) has introduced an antigen test kit produced by Thai organisations, with an accuracy of 96 per cent in detecting the Covid-19 virus.

NIA deputy executive director Vichian Suksoir said the Thai-made ATK was developed by Affinome and the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, with support from his agency.

According to test results among 200 persons, the error rate of the ATK was very low.

Vichian added that the result of the test takes 15 minutes.

The kits have been registered with the Thailand’s Food and Drug Administration.

It will be a long road to recovery for Khao San Road businesses despite the government aims to reopen Bangkok to all-important foreign tourists from November 1, the Khao San Business Association made it clear on Wednesday.

Association president Sanga Ruangwattanakul said that while he was happy to learn that the government had decided to reopen the country on November 1, he was concerned the ban on serving alcohol would continue to badly effect businesses.

Sanga believed that once Bangkok is reopened, Khao San Road will not be as energetic as before the pandemic.

He felt business would recover only in mid-2022 and just by 50 per cent at that.

Sanga pointed out that as much as 90 per cent of businesses on Khao San Road had been closed during the lockdown. In addition, only a total of THB100,000 has been earned in a day compared to THB20 million before the brutal coronavirus took the country by storm.

National Police deputy chief Pol General Damrongsak Kittiprapas confirmed on Wednesday that banks had already returned money to victims of a widespread credit card/debit card scam and that a number of banks would report to the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau on Thursday.

Damrongsak said around 4,800 people with debits cards were scammed out of THB30 million while 5,300 with credit cards lost money totalling THB100 million.

He added that a thorough investigation would be carried out as soon as the banks provided evidence to the police.
