Home or community treatment for Covid patients requesting beds under NHSO

Covid-19 patients who request beds in Greater Bangkok via the National Health Security Office (NHSO) hotline 1330 will receive medical treatment at home or at a venue in their community from Monday.

NHSO secretary-general Jadet Thammathat-Aree said community clinics would be responsible for treating Covid-19 patients in the area.

“This move will enable patients to receive medical treatment faster without fear of developing severe symptoms,” he said.

He said home or community isolation was not an abandoning of patients, but instead they will be treated at home, in the temple pavilion, or a school auditorium just as in a hospital.

“Community clinics will send thermometer, pulse oximeter, Fah Talai Jone (andrographis paniculata) drugs and meals to patients to ensure that they can undergo isolation without the risk of spreading the virus,” he explained.

“Meanwhile, clinics will contact patients via video call to evaluate their symptoms every day.”

He said patients who develop severe symptoms will be sent to the hospital once beds are available.

“Community clinics will send Favipiravir to patients for treating themselves while waiting for available beds,” he said.

He added that the NHSO would cooperate with the Urban Institute for Disease Prevention and Control and Mahidol University’s Faculty of Medical Technology on conducting proactive tests across the capital from Wednesday.

“The office aimed to conduct tests on 10,000 people per day, while those who test positive for Covid-19 will undergo home or community isolation as well,” he added.

Unused areas of Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports will be utilised for setting up field hospitals, Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob said on Sunday.

He said the arrangement of another 7,000 beds was being made due to the current Covid-19 situation causing a large number of patients to wait for treatment.

He said the government has finalised with Airports of Thailand (AOT) for temporary lease. Also, the lease for Bussarakham Hospital at Impact Muang Thong Thani in Nonthaburi province will expire in August.

He said the AOT was ready to offer the area of the airports that were currently not in operation to support the field hospitals.

It will open for service around August, which will coincide with the expiry of the lease of Bussarakham Impact Muang Thong Thani Hospital.

The hospital at Suvarnabhumi Airport will be able to accommodate more than three times the number of patients at Bussarakham Hospital.

In addition, Don Mueang Airport is in the process of preparing warehouse building area 4 to set up a field hospital that can accommodate approximately 2,000 beds for patients with mild symptoms (green category).

Nitinai Sirismatthakarn, president of AOT, revealed that AOT is preparing to open a warehouse building to be established as a field hospital to support Covid-19 patients according to government policy. The warehouse building is approximately 16,000-18,000 square metres and can accommodate approximately 2,000 beds.

The building is currently undergoing internal cleaning as it has been closed since 2006. Chula student club opposes honorary degree for tycoon Dhanin #SootinClaimon.Com

Chula student club opposes honorary degree for tycoon Dhanin

The Student Government of Chulalongkorn University (SGCU) has posted an open letter, requesting a review of the decision to grant an honorary doctorate of science degree to business tycoon Dhanin Chearavanont.

The student club said the university’s regulations on granting an honorary doctorate degree, BE 2555 (2012) should be adhered to.

The rule states that “such a degree shall be to honour qualified and virtuous individuals who have served the common good through their academic competence”.

When considering the qualifications of Dhanin, he may be seen as successful in doing business at the national and international level, but it is still doubtful that Dhanin has served society as a whole based on social justice, they argued.

They said that Thai society is suffering heavily from shortage of vaccines that are effective in preventing this epidemic because CP Pharmaceutical Group, one of Dhanin’s CP Group companies, is related to the company Sino Biopharmaceutical, a company that owns a more than $515-million, or 15.03 per cent stake in Sinovac Life Sciences, a subsidiary of Sinovac Co. They argued that the tycoon not only held shares in related companies, but also has a relationship with the founder of Sino Biopharmaceutical, which is the founder of CP Pharmaceutical Group as well.

In addition, all businesses in Dhanin’s subsidiaries are businesses that affect small and medium enterprises, including small farmers, service workers and labourers who are the majority of the people of the country. The awarding of an honorary doctorate of science degree to Dhanin without considering the aforementioned circumstances may not be consistent with the objectives of awarding an honorary doctorate in accordance with the regulations, the SGCU argued.

On Saturday, Charoen Pokphand Group pointed to a statement it had already issued on May 25, that it had nothing to do with the government’s direct or indirect purchase of the Sinovac vaccine, saying the Sinovac vaccine procurement is a government-to-government transaction, and CP Group was not directly or indirectly associated with it.
