Anearly bloodless revolution on June 24, 1932, by a group of civilians of the Khana Ratsadon (Peoples’ Party) and the military who together overthrew the government of King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) resulted in the transition of Siam into a constitutional monarchy system of government, the introduction of democracy and the first constitution of Thailand.

Thailand boxes clever in fight against invasive water hyacinth

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment aims to kill two birds with one stone by promoting invasive water hyacinth as eco-friendly packaging for parcels.

Thailand boxes clever in fight against invasive water hyacinth

Atthaphon Charoenchansa, chief of the ministry’s Pollution Control Department (PCD), revealed on Wednesday the ministry had discussed the idea with Thai Post, Kerry Express (Thailand), Lazada and the Thai Retailers Association at an online meeting.

Native to South America, water hyacinth is an invasive species that pollutes and clogs waterways, disrupting boat traffic, agriculture and fisheries across Thailand.

Swapping plastic packaging for water hyacinth would not only reduce this problem but also cut the huge amount of waste from plastic packaging and foam, said Atthaphon. It will also create employment, he added.

The ministry shared with parcel firms information on using the aquatic plant as a substitute for plastic packaging and cushioning instead of foam beads.

The government will now promote use of water-hyacinth packaging as part of its green economy drive for sustainability in Thailand’s business and industrial sectors, said the PCD chief.

CCSA rejects medical advice to lock down Bangkok as daily infections near 1,000

Health officials have rejected a proposal from medics to lock down Bangkok, where Covid-19 is now spreading at a rate of almost 1,000 infections per day.

CCSA rejects medical advice to lock down Bangkok as daily infections near 1,000

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) has decided that serious outbreaks at construction camps and other city venues can be contained with local measures, CSSA spokesman Taweesin Visanuyothin said on Wednesday.

In addition, locking down Bangkok may spur migrant workers to leave and potentially spread the virus to their home provinces, he added.

Instead, the CSSA will maintain its “bubble and seal” policy of localised measures to contain the contagion and stop it spreading from hotspots, said the spokesman.

Bangkok logged 956 new cases on Wednesday, driven by serious outbreaks in constructions camps, slums and densely populated neighbourhoods.

Meanwhile, medical facilities are running out of room to treat the rising number of patients in the capital and neighbouring provinces.

Most beds for “yellow” and “red” category patients (moderate and severe symptoms) are now occupied, according to the Department of Medical Services.

The CCSA is seeking to free up bed space for severe cases by shifting green-category patients to hospitels. Bangkok authorities are coordinating with hotels in a bid to open more hospital beds.

Aerothai, a state enterprise, estimates that five international flights per day will arrive during the Phuket Sandbox scheme.

The airport is currently handling an average of 75 domestic flights per day, it added.

In 2019, before the Covid-19 outbreak, Phuket Airport handled about 350 flights per day.

Aerothai also estimates that Thailand this fiscal year (October 2020-September 2021) will handle a total of 339,340 flights, down 45 per cent from fiscal year 2020.

Thailand pushes cooperation on jabs, “green development” at China’s Belt and Road summit

Foreign Minister and Deputy PM Don Pramudwinai arrived at Wednesday’s online “Asia and Pacific High-Level Conference on Belt and Road” armed with two key documents outlining Thailand’s cooperation with hosts China.

Thailand pushes cooperation on jabs, "green development" at China’s Belt and Road summit

On Tuesday, the Cabinet approved drafts on the “Barrier Partnership and Pathways on Cooperation on Covid-19 Vaccines” and the “Initiative on Belt and Road Partnerships and Road on Green Development”.

The documents informed discussions on the conference’s theme: “Promoting cooperation in the fight against the epidemic for sustainable recovery”.

The Foreign Ministry said the first document expressed intentions to promote cooperation on Covid-19 vaccines by encouraging governments and vaccine manufacturers to help developing countries through donations or exports at affordable prices, making vaccines a public commodity.

The second expressed the intention to promote cooperation in green development of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) for sustainable economic growth by adhering to principles set out by the United Nations and Paris climate agreement. Thailand is central to China’s BRI ambitions, with Beijing funding construction of a high-speed railway among other BRI projects in the Kingdom.

Police on Wednesday asked people to obey measures to contain the spread of Covid-19, warning that large gatherings were still outlawed under the state of emergency.

Police fire warning as Bangkok braces for return of pro-democracy rallies

The warning came ahead of pro-democracy rallies planned for Thursday to mark the 89th anniversary of the 1932 revolution that overthrew absolute monarchy and ushered in democracy with the King as head of state. Bangkok police warned on Monday that holding large rallies would violate the emergency law.

On Wednesday, national police chief Suwat Jangyodsuk said his officers were ready to handle the protests.

“The police will perform their duties in line with the law,” Suwat said.

He said officers would set up barriers if necessary, adding that they are keeping an eye on every move made by the protesters.

Several pro-democracy groups have vowed to hold anti-government rallies at protest sites around Bangkok, including Government House, Parliament, Democracy Monument, the October 14 Memorial and Pathumwan intersection.

What may delay or even cancel Phuket sandbox plans #SootinClaimon.Com

What may delay or even cancel Phuket sandbox plans

Thailand’s tourism sandbox scheme kicks off on July 1 with Phuket opening its doors first before the scheme expands to Surat Thani’s three islands on July 15.

What may delay or even cancel Phuket sandbox plans

Some factors, however, may prompt the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) to put the brakes on the programme or even cancel it altogether.

Under the sandbox, foreigners who can verify they have been inoculated against Covid-19 and test negative can fly into Phuket and move around freely in the province without having to quarantine. After spending 14 days in Phuket and if they still test negative, the tourists can then travel to other parts of Thailand.

The CCSA, however, has warned that the sandbox scheme will be reconsidered or even cancelled if any of the following takes place:
• Phuket has more than 90 new infections per week
• Infections spread across all three of Phuket’s districts or six subdistricts
• More than three unlinked clusters are reported
• More than 80 per cent of hospital beds in the province are occupied by Covid-19 patients
• There is an uncontrollable spread of a mutated variant of the virus

The CCSA said it will employ the following measures based on the severity of the situation:
• Cut down the number of allowed activities
• Employ sealed route measures for tourists
• Make hotel quarantine mandatory
• Consider ending sandbox scheme altogether

As for Surat Thani’s Koh Samui, Koh Tao and Koh Pha-ngan, which are scheduled to reopen on July 15, the CCSA will employ the above measures if infections in these three islands exceed the capacity of Koh Samui Hospital.
