Fierce mother croc snared and returned to wild in Nakhon Sawan

Last week, residents of Phra Non subdistrict in Nakhon Sawan’s Muang district were afraid to leave their homes after a female crocodile was spotted guarding her eggs nearby.

The 3-metre-long crocodile was seen tending to her eggs near the Monthong Shrine, which is next to the province’s famous Bueng Boraphet.

The 224-square-kilometre Bueng Boraphet in the east of Nakhon Sawan is the largest freshwater swamp in central Thailand and is home to many water birds and wildlife.

After being alerted of the crocodile, officials from the Region 12 Wildlife Conservation Office spent about 20 minutes on Sunday (June 13) to snare it. She was then taken to the Nakhon Sawan Fresh Water Fishery Research and Development Centre to be treated, before being released in the Bueng Boraphet Wildlife Sanctuary.

The sanctuary is home to many other crocodiles and officials hope she will mate again as the 10 eggs she had been guarding so fiercely were found to be infertile.

The sanctuary is far from human communities and is flooded all year round, making it perfect for crocodiles.

Prayut to check if Phuket ready to reopen on July 1

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha will fly to Phuket next Friday (June 25) to check if the province is ready to welcome tourists under the sandbox scheme from July 1, a news source said on Thursday.

Prayut to check if Phuket ready to reopen on July 1

Under the sandbox scheme, foreigners who can prove they are fully inoculated against Covid-19 and test negative can fly into Phuket and move around freely without having to quarantine. After staying on the island for 14 days and testing negative again, tourists will be able to travel to other places in Thailand.

In a public address on Wednesday evening, Prayut promised that Thailand will open its doors within 120 days.

“The time has now come for us to look forward and set a date for when we can fully open our country and start receiving visitors because reopening Thailand is key to reducing the suffering of people who have lost their source of income,” he said. “I am, therefore, setting a goal for us to declare Thailand fully open within 120 days from today and for tourist destinations that are already prepared to open even faster.”

The source added that the PM and his team will land at Phuket International Airport on June 25 to inspect the airport’s screening process, before heading to Angsana Laguna Phuket Hotel in Thalang district to meet provincial officials and check out their vaccination plans for locals and hotel staff.

“In the afternoon, the PM will visit public health staff at Ao Po Pier, which will be one of the main screening points for tourists entering the province, before returning to Bangkok,” the source added.

Phuket deputy governor Phichet Panaphong said on Thursday that some 74 per cent of the island’s population is now vaccinated against Covid-19.

“Phuket population can be split into three groups – some 310,000 permanent residents, 61 per cent of whom have been vaccinated. The second group is the 100,000 or so people who do not have permanent residence on the island. All of them have been inoculated,” he said. The third group is some 74,000 migrant workers, 41 per cent of whom have received their jab.

The Public Health Ministry has launched measures to help people who have registered for Covid-19 vaccination but are unable to get a jab.

Jab postponed? Go to Bang Sue Station if you are in priority group: Ministry

The move comes after numerous hospitals across the country postponed vaccination appointments due to a shortage of vaccines.

Dr Somsak Akkasilp, chief of the ministry’s Department of Medical Services, advised people whose jab was postponed to call the hospital where their vaccination was booked.

He added that the elderly and people with seven chronic conditions whose appointment was postponed can get the jab at Bangkok’s Bang Sue Grand Station by contacting (02) 792 2333, where 20 phone lines are available.

“If there are problems, the Public Health Ministry will offer help,” he assured.

Dr Opas Karnkawinpong, director-general of the Department of Disease Control, said 6 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine will be delivered in June and another 3 million doses soon after.

He added that the second dose of Sinovac is administered after two to four weeks, and AstraZeneca after 10 to 12 weeks.

Three Excise Dept officials transferred for extorting orange juice seller

A dream turned into a nightmare for a Bangkok resident when she received an order for 500 bottles of orange juice but ended up paying a 12,000-baht fine instead.

Three Excise Dept officials transferred for extorting orange juice seller

On Tuesday, Facebook user Ni Pornnipa posted that she was delighted to get an order for 500 bottles, especially at a time when funds were tight due to the Covid-19 crisis.

However, the order became a nightmare when five men, three of them officials, showed up at pick-up time and demanded to see a production licence. When Ni Pornnipa was unable to produce one, she was fined 12,000 baht.

She later found out that her online customer was linked to these officials.

Her post went viral and many Facebook users shared similar experiences.

In response to this incident, the Excise Department has transferred the three officials and will launch an investigation.

According to the department, Ni Pornnipa should not have been fined because a production licence is only required for mass production or a factory. It is believed the money was returned to the victim.

Baht ‘under pressure as foreign investors still concerned about Thai economy’

The baht opened at 31.31 to the US dollar on Thursday, weakening from 31.17 at close on Wednesday.

Baht ‘under pressure as foreign investors still concerned about Thai economy’

The Thai currency is likely to move between 31.25 and 31.40 during the day, Krungthai Bank market strategist Poon Panichpibool said.

Poon said the baht tended to weaken in line with the strengthening of the dollar, but the Thai currency is also under pressure from foreign investors’ sales of Thai stocks. He pointed out that investors were still concerned about the Thai economy as Covid-19 vaccine distribution in the country had hit a snag.

However, Poon explained that the baht would not weaken sharply as exporters aimed to sell their dollar holdings when the baht moved near 31.30 per US dollar. He expected the baht to move between 31.20 and 31.40 if there is no new factor influencing the currency.

Sinopharm recipients will be insured for THB1 million in case of death or coma

Chulabhorn Royal Academy (CRA) announced on Wednesday that it would sell Sinopharm’s Covilo Covid-19 vaccine to organisations at THB888 per jab and would pay THB1 million in compensation to the family of anyone who dies or goes into a coma from the jab.

Sinopharm recipients will be insured for THB1 million in case of death or coma

The price of THB888 includes transportation, storage and insurance fees, the latter in case of side-effects.

“In case recipients of the Sinopharm vaccine die or go into a coma, they will be compensated at THB1 million,” the CRA said. “In case they are hospitalised after the jab, medical fees will be covered at a maximum of THB30,000.”

To be eligible for the compensation, candidates must be a Thai national or an expatriate living in the country for more than nine months and not be over 99 years of age.

The insurance coverage will start from the vaccination date and will last for one year.

The CRA opened registration for company customers starting on June 14. As of Tuesday (June 15) as many as 10,011 organisations applied for Sinopharm for a total of 3,660,616 staff.

Registration will close on Friday (June 18) at 4pm.

1.6 million AstraZeneca doses being delivered this week: Anutin

A total of 1.6 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine are being delivered to the Public Health Ministry this week, Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on Wednesday.

1.6 million AstraZeneca doses being delivered this week: Anutin

“Today the ministry is receiving 600,000 doses of AstraZeneca and the next lot of 1 million doses will arrive on Friday,” he said.

“Once the vaccines arrive, we will distribute them to every province based on population density and other risk factors in each area,” he said.

“The rumour that Buri Ram will be allocated more vaccines than other provinces is not true.”

Buri Ram is one of the major electoral bases of Anutin’s Bhumjaithai Party, with the national election in 2019 seeing the party’s candidates winning all eight constituencies of the northeastern province.

Anutin also said that on Wednesday he visited the vaccination centre at Bangkok’s Bang Sue Grand Station, which has started inoculating people whose jabs had been delayed.

“Today [Wednesday] about 1,000 people came to get inoculated at Bang Sue Grand Station. They are people who had registered via the Mor Prom platform since the start of June but whose inoculations were postponed until now,” he said.

Auntin said the delay was caused by “miscommunication” with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, but the ministry has cleared up the confusion and now everything should run smoothly.

“Pre-registration is still a prerequisite to get inoculated at Bang Sue Grand Station. No walk-in candidates will be accepted,” the minister made it clear.
