Anutin vows better communication with Bangkok City Hall after vaccine spat

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul on Monday promised to improve communication between his Department of Disease Control (DDC) and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) after many hospitals postponed Covid-19 vaccination this week.

Anutin had earlier sought to blame the BMA for the suspension of vaccination services.

Several public and private hospitals said the suspension was due to a lack of doses from the Public Health Ministry, sparking public complaints about the government’s vaccine allocation.

Anutin said that the DDC and BMA must communicate in-depth to resolve this issue.

The DDC would now give other agencies weekly figures for the number of doses delivered and their estimated time of arrival, he said.

He also apologised to people for the problems with vaccine allocation.

He added that he would discuss with the DDC director-general about how to deliver vaccination to Bangkokians who had registered via the Mor Phrom (Doctors Ready) application.

“Initially, we may allow them to receive jabs at a vaccination station in Bang Sue Grand Station,” he said.

NACC to probe suspected corruption in buying of solar-powered lamp posts

The National Anti‑Corruption Commission (NACC) is looking into the budget disbursement for procurement of decorative solar-powered lamp posts in several provinces for possible corruption, NACC secretary-general Worawit Sukboon said on Sunday.

NACC to probe suspected corruption in buying of solar-powered lamp posts

The move came after Samut Prakan residents approached the NACC and called for an investigation into budget disbursement by Rachathewa Subdistrict Administrative Organisation in Bang Phli district. The organisation reportedly has spent an unusually high amount of money on the street lamp posts designed like a Kinnari, a half-bird, half-woman Buddhist mythological creature, and equipped with a solar power panel.

It is reported that the Rachathewa subdistrict has paid THB642.6 million for 6,773 posts, at THB94,884 apiece. The project listed Bangkok Road Lighting Co Ltd as the sole contractor.

The residents also urged the commission to look into discrepancies in contract details and actual installation. It is reported that the posts have been installed 10-14 metres apart, while the contract specified that each post must be 20-25 metres apart.

“It has come to light that several other provinces have spent their budget on decorative light posts in a similar manner, so the commission will look into the issue thoroughly for possible corruption by local administrators,” said Worawit.

The accident involving a luxury sport car and a hatchback happened on Saraburi-Lomsak Road in Nongphai district on Sunday.

Na Chaliang Police Station said that a BMW Z4 and a Suzuki Swift were found wrecked on the road from a head-on collision, which killed the driver and a passenger of the Suzuki Swift and the driver of the BMW. The only survivor of the accident is an 18-year-old girl who was on the front seat of the BMW. She was rushed to hospital and remains in critical condition.

A news source reported that the driver of the BMW was identified as Suraphak (last name withheld), aged 50 years, a programmer residing in Bangkok and former leader of the pro-democracy group “Seri Panyachon”, which mostly consists of college students in Bangkok.

Suraphak made headlines in 2015 when he was sued for violating the lese majeste law, or Section 112 of the Criminal Code, for posting online messages defaming the monarch, but the court eventually dismissed the case.

Witnesses said that they saw the BMW driving from Khao Kho National Park and heading to Bangkok at high speed when the car reportedly weered out of control on the wet road following rains, slid across the traffic island and hit the oncoming Suzuki Swift.

New benefits package for VITT diagnosis and treatment under Universal Coverage Scheme

The National Health Security Board has approved laboratory testing and medication for treating vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT) under the Universal Coverage Scheme (UCS)’s benefits package.

New benefits package for VITT diagnosis and treatment under Universal Coverage Scheme

VITT is a prothrombotic syndrome observed in a small number of people who received adenoviral vector-based vaccines in Covid-19 vaccination programmes. The exact incidence of VITT appears to be rare. Only one in 125,000 to one million vaccine recipients develop this condition.

VITT symptoms include severe headache, numbness, visual changes, difficulty in breathing, one-sided paralysis, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, petechiae, leg pain, or swelling. The symptoms may show up in individuals within four to 30 days after vaccination.

Public Health Minister and NHS board chairman Anutin Charnvirakul said that the introduction of VITT laboratory testing and treatment in the UCS’ benefits package aimed to instil confidence in the Covid-19 mass vaccination programme.

“The Thai government will take care of people experiencing adverse effects after receiving a Covid-19 vaccine,” Anutin said.

Vaccine recipients who experience symptoms caused by VITT can request free laboratory testing at their registered hospitals. They will receive free treatment, too, if they are diagnosed with VITT.

NHSO Secretary-General Dr Jadej Thammathat-Aree said that the NHSO would cover the cost of four items relating to VITT diagnosis and treatment;

•Complete blood count, maximum of THB50 per test

•Heparin-PF4 antibody ELISA assay, maximum of THB1,550 per test

•Heparin-induced platelet activation test, maximum of THB1,550 per test

•Human normal immunoglobulin, intravenous (IVIG) for treating VITT.

The NHSO has allocated around THB9.28 million to cover the cost of IVIG, said Dr Jadej.

BMA denies responsibility for distribution of vaccines to inoculation centres

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) on Sunday said it was not responsible for distributing Covid-19 vaccines to vaccination stations across the capital.

BMA denies responsibility for distribution of vaccines to inoculation centres

The BMA rebuttal came after the Public Health Ministry claimed that the BMA and provincial government agencies were responsible for distributing Covid-19 vaccines to vaccination stations in the area.

The ministry added that it had delivered 1 million doses of AstraZeneca and Sinovac vaccines to the BMA to commence the vaccination drive in June this year.

Reacting to the claim, the BMA said the Public Health Ministry had promised to deliver 2.5 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccines to the authority.

The BMA said that it had received only 350,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine and 150,000 doses of Sinovac vaccine to be used from June 7 to 14 this year.

The BMA also explained that its vaccine allocation plan was:

AstraZeneca

– 181,400 doses for people who had registered via Mor Phrom (Doctors Ready) application.

– 52,600 doses for the second jab.

– 8,000 doses for elderly and bedridden patients.

– 100,000 doses for the general public.

– 8,000 doses as a reserve for containing the spread.

Sinovac

– 128,000 doses for the second jab for people living in areas at risk of Covid-19 infection.

– 26,000 doses for containing the spread of new Covid-19 clusters.

“Officials are ready for mass vaccination once the vaccines are delivered,” the BMA added.

Betting amounting to tens of billions of baht expected during Euro 2020

Football betting is expected to intensify during the European Football Championship 2020, currently underway, the Centre for Gambling Studies (CGS) said on Saturday, while warning parents to keep an eye on their children.

Betting amounting to tens of billions of baht expected during Euro 2020

The month-long Euro 2020 ends on July 11.

The centre said a study with Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Economics and Research Centre for Social and Business Development showed that more than 30 million people in Thailand are gambling addicts.

“Of the total, 700,000 people are new gamblers who are seeking the easiest way to make money amid the pandemic,” the centre said.

A study by the Thai Health Promotion Foundation showed that 2.4 million people were engaging in football betting, and 82.6 per cent of them were children.

In Euro 2016 alone, 16.8 per cent of gamblers were children who claimed that they were invited by friends or they got carried away by the tournament’s atmosphere.

Kasikorn Research Centre and the Centre for Economic and Business Forecasting of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce revealed statistics of funds flow during previous European Football Championships:

▪︎THB33 billion in 2004

▪︎THB41 billion in 2008

▪︎THB78 billion in 2012

▪︎THB57.8 billion in 2016

Both centres also forecast that Euro 2020 would generate funds flows in tens of billions of baht.
