The Narcotics Control Board announced on Saturday that 580 grams of methamphetamine were confiscated at Suvarnabhumi Airport by the airport interdiction taskforce.

The NCB statement did not specify on which date the narcotic was found.

The meth was found hidden in three motorcycle parts sent by a Thai to a recipient in New Zealand. The authorities are investigating the case.

On June 2, the same taskforce had found packages of seven pulses with 520 grams of methamphetamine inside. That consignment was also destined for New Zealand.

Delay in supply of AstraZeneca vaccine slows down Bangkok inoculation drive

Supply of the AstraZeneca vaccine will not be enough to serve Bangkokians during the third and fourth weeks of this month, as the Thai manufacturer, Siam Bioscience, has delayed vaccine delivery from June 14 to June 16.

Delay in supply of AstraZeneca vaccine slows down Bangkok inoculation drive

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) launched the vaccination drive for the general public on June 7.

Many residents of the capital were given AstraZeneca manufactured by Siam Bioscience and supplied on June 4.

The next lot of AstraZeneca vaccines were scheduled for delivery on June 14. However, the delivery was delayed to June 16, without explanation. This would mean that the stocks available would be less than the doses required for the third and fourth weeks of this month to inoculate Bangkokians.

Foreign Ministry denies ordering removal of Free Palestine banner in Bangkok

The Foreign Ministry on Friday clarified that the removal of the “Free Palestine” banner near Sathu Pradit Expressway in Bangkok was not done on the orders of the ministry.

Foreign Ministry denies ordering removal of Free Palestine banner in Bangkok

Agiant banner with the Palestinian flag along with the message “Free Palestine” was reportedly seen covering a billboard near the expressway on June 3. No group has claimed responsibility for the banner until it was later removed by the billboard owner. Rumours then emerged that the Foreign Ministry had forced the owner to take it down, fearing that it could affect international relations.

“Thailand has been advocating peace talks between Israel and Palestine under the two-state solution approach in which both countries can coexist peacefully and with mutually accepted borders in the Middle East,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Thani Saengrat said. “We also promote a non-violent approach and hope that both countries would start peace negotiations again in an appropriate environment.”

Thani added that Thailand had officially acknowledged Palestine as a state on January 17, 2012 and started diplomatic relations with Palestine since August 1, 2012.

“For nine years, Thailand and Palestine have maintained a positive relationship. The Palestinian president visited Thailand as a government guest in 2016, while Thailand donated US$30,000 to help Palestine fight the Covid-19 outbreak on June 23, 2020,” he said.

Thani added that Thailand had also maintained academic and development cooperation with Palestine at bilateral and multi-lateral levels, including providing academic training through Thailand International Cooperation Agency, hosting the Conference on Cooperation among East Asian Countries for Palestinian Development in 2018, and donating to United Nations Relief and Work Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East at US$40,000 per year since 1978 under a multi-year pledge.

Registration for vaccination via app to resume from June 24

The suspended Mor Phrom (Doctors Ready) vaccine registration application would be revived from June 24, Government Spokeswoman Ratchada Thanadirek said on Friday.

Registration for vaccination via app to resume from June 24

The Ministry of Public Health had set up the Mor Phrom mobile application for the general public to register for Covid-19 vaccination on May 1. However, the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration suspended the vaccine reservation process via the application on May 26 to improve the system, while people who had already registered would still get their jabs as per schedule.

“People will be able to use the Mor Phrom application for vaccine reservation again from June 24,” said Ratchada. “If you are not comfortable with registering via the application, you can still register with hospitals and the district health office in your area either in person or via the provided online channels.”

Ratchada added that since the vaccination for the general public started from June 7 to June 10, up to 1.45 million doses of vaccine had been provided, increasing total inoculation in the country from 4.21 million doses to 5.66 million doses in just four days.

“The government also has started providing jabs to workers in industrial estates and nearby communities,” she said.

“A pilot vaccination unit has been set up at Map Ta Phut Complex industrial estate in Rayong province since June 9 with the capacity to inoculate 1,000 people per day. Some 25,000 people from six nearby industrial estates have registered to get the jabs.”

Ratchada added that so far the government had inoculated 1,600 Thai students who wished to travel overseas for studies, while some 2,000 other students are awaiting their jabs.

“Once all the registered students get their jabs for overseas study, the Department of Consular Affairs would consider opening the next round of registration,” she added.

Children aged 12-18 years to get Pfizer vaccine in fourth quarter

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on Friday that the ministry aimed to vaccinate children aged 12-18 years against Covid-19 with the Pfizer vaccine, which is expected to arrive in the fourth quarter of the year.

Children aged 12-18 years to get Pfizer vaccine in fourth quarter

The Department of Disease Control signed an initial contract with Pfizer on Thursday, which allows Pfizer to submit documents to register the vaccine with the Food and Drug Administration.

The ministry expects to buy 20 million doses of Pfizer’s vaccine within this year.

“The DDC is now working with schools to set up vaccination units and provide jabs to students,” said Anutin.

“It is estimated that there are about 5 million children in this age bracket. The 20 million doses that we will buy should easily cover this target group.

“The manufacturer of Sinovac vaccine is planning to register the vaccine for use in children aged over three years,” Anutin said. “Once the registration is completed, we would immediately inoculate children in this age group as we would already have the vaccine in stock,” he added.

When asked if the delivery of AstraZeneca vaccine to Thailand would be affected as the company has said that it would deliver vaccines manufactured in Thailand also to other countries in Southeast Asia, Anutin replied: “The company is under contract with the Thai government to deliver the vaccines on time. We should start asking such questions only when they fail to adhere to the schedule. In fact, we should be glad that a product from Thailand could help other countries.”

Isolated heavy rains forecast for most parts of Thailand

The Thailand Meteorological Department said on Saturday that a monsoon trough lies across the upper North and upper Laos as a tropical depression develops over the upper South China Sea.

Isolated heavy rains forecast for most parts of Thailand

Meanwhile, a strong southwest monsoon prevails across the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand.

Isolated heavy showers to very heavy rains are forecast for the North, Northeast, the East and the west coast of the South.

People in these areas should beware of accumulated rains and heavy rains, the department said.

Waves in the Andaman Sea rise 2-3 metres high and more than three metres high during thundershowers. All ships should proceed with caution and small boats should keep ashore, the department said. The tropical depression over the upper South China Sea is expected to further develop into a tropical storm and move to the Tokin Bay and make landfall over upper Vietnam on June 12-13. This will cause the monsoon trough to remain over the upper North and upper Laos with isolated heavy rains in the upper North and the upper Northeast, the department said.

The weather forecast for the next 24 hours:

North: Thundershowers in 60 per cent of the areas with isolated heavy rains; temperature lows of 23-24 degrees Celsius, highs of 32-35°C.

Northeast: Thundershowers in 70 per cent of the areas with isolated heavy to very heavy rains; temperature lows of 22-24°C, highs of 28-35°C.

Central: Thundershowers in 40 per cent of the areas; temperature lows of 23-25°C, highs of 33-37°C.

East: Thundershowers in 60 per cent of the areas with isolated heavy rains; temperature lows of 23-27°C, highs of 29-34°C; waves two metres high and over two metres during thundershowers.

South (east coast): Thundershowers in 60 per cent of the areas; temperature lows of 24-26°C, highs of 33-35°C; waves a metre high and 1-2 metres during thundershowers.

South (west coast): Thundershowers in 70 per cent of the areas with isolated heavy rains; temperature lows of 22-25°C, highs of 27-32°C; waves 2-3 metres high and over three metres during thundershowers.

Bangkok and surrounding areas: Thundershowers in 40 per cent of the areas; temperature lows of 26-27°C, highs of 34-36°C.
