According to the survey, 62 provinces are interested in acquiring the vaccine, nine are not, four are undecided and one has not responded.

On Friday, the Chulabhorn Royal Academy (CRA) announced that it plans to import a million doses of the Sinopharm vaccine from China in June. The move came after the Food and Drug Administration approved the jab for emergency use in Thailand, with Bio Genetech registered as its importer.

The academy’s decision to procure the vaccines was announced in the Royal Gazette earlier this week.

CRA secretary-general Dr Nithi Mahanonda said the government and private agencies had expressed interest in purchasing the vaccine from the academy.

Local admin units cannot independently buy Covid shots, warns Anupong

Local administration units are advised to wait for the government’s nod before purchasing Covid-19 vaccines, Interior Minister Anupong Paochinda said on Monday. Though he conceded that the agencies had every right to spend their own funds on purchasing the vaccines.

Provincial authorities, however, do not have the right to dip into the national vaccine budget without the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration’s approval, he said.

Separately, Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul met the press on Monday morning to explain why funds had not been allocated for the Covid-19 crisis in the 2022 national budget.

Anutin said his ministry had sought funds to handle the crisis, but the Budget Bureau instructed it to get the funds from the government’s borrowed money or from the central budget.

Military officers in the deep South Narathiwat province are patrolling natural borders to ensure that people from Malaysia cannot sneak into the country illegally, as well as to contain the spread of Covid-19.

The move comes as Malaysia has announced a lockdown of the country from June 1, causing Malaysian military officers to pay attention to people entering or leaving the country.

The 5th Infantry Division commander, Maj-General Santi Sakuntanak, said soldiers, rangers and border patrol police are conducting proactive patrol to ensure that no one can sneak into the country.

He added that military officers would focus on patrolling Waeng, Su-ngai Kolok and Tak Bai districts which have many natural borders.

Livestock department insists pigs from Thailand free from ASF after Vietnamese claim

Preliminary investigation has revealed no trace of the African swine fever (ASF) virus in live pigs being exported as claimed by a Vietnamese authority recently, the chief of the Thai Department of Livestock Development said on Sunday.

Livestock department insists pigs from Thailand free from ASF after Vietnamese claim

Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development earlier this month had submitted a letter to the Royal Thai Embassy in Hanoi stating that Vietnam would ban the import of pigs from Thailand from June 30 due to trace of ASF virus being found in one lot of pigs.

“To restore confidence in Thai livestock products among foreign trade partners, we have ordered a temporary halt on export of live pigs from the company and farm from which Vietnam claimed they found the virus,” said Sorawit Thanito, director-general of the department.

“We will set up a committee to thoroughly investigate the issue and notify Vietnam as soon as we have a conclusion,” he said.

The department has also ordered all exporters of live pigs to Vietnam to perform laboratory tests at the outgoing quarantine station by testing samples from at least 10 pigs per truckload.

Sorawit added that this measure would be followed on top of the measures under Good Agricultural Practices that the department had implemented on all livestock products being exported to Vietnam, which include vaccination against foot and mouth disease, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, brucellosis and leptospirosis and a test to ensure that the animals are free of beta-agonist.

“For consumers who are concerned about the safety and cleanliness of pork, we advise you to buy only products that have ‘Livestock OK’ stickers, which have been granted to farms and manufacturers who get certification from the department with full traceability and in compliance with international standards such as Good Agricultural Practices, Good Manufacturing Practices, Good Hygienic Practices, Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point,” said Sorawit.

Why you must avoid medication for migraine, cold and birth-control pills before vaccination

To reduce the chances of severe reactions, people about to get the get the Covid-19 vaccine should stop taking medicines for migraine and cold or birth-control pills, Prof. Dr Thiravat Hemachudha, head of the Information Centre for Emerging Infectious Diseases at Chulalongkorn University, has said.

Why you must avoid medication for migraine, cold and birth-control pills before vaccination

In a Facebook post on Sunday, Thiravat said: “Severe reactions are rare but it is best to reduce the chance of occurrence to as low as possible.”

“One of the severe reactions to Covid-19 is constant inflammation that could result in vasoconstriction, or the narrowing of blood vessels and occurrence of a blood clot. Therefore, recipients should refrain from taking drugs that already cause vasoconstriction, such as medicines for migraine and cold,” he said.

“As for patients who are on cannabis oil or CBD oil, such as the Deja Formula Ganja Oil produced by Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine which helps reduce inflammation, they can continue taking the drug before vaccination without increasing the dosage,” he added.

Thiravat added that women who use female hormones for birth control or treating of other diseases should stop taking the pill at least 14 days before vaccination.

“These recommendations are also applicable to other vaccines,” he said.

Data from the Department of Disease Control revealed that from April 28 to May 28, over 3.5 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine have been administered in Thailand. About 2.41 million got the first jab and 1.09 million have received both jabs.
