Third-wave pulls air travel down by more than 50%: CAAT

The first quarter of this year has seen just 6.66 million air passengers, marking a 79.1 per cent drop from 25.27 million in the same period last year, the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) reported on Wednesday.

Third-wave pulls air travel down by more than 50%: CAAT

Of the 6.66 million, 6.47 million were domestic passengers, dropping 60.1 per cent year on year, while some 195,000 were foreigners, marking a drop of 98.8 per cent year on year.

CAAT put this significant decline in air travel down to the second wave of Covid-19 infections that was sparked in Samut Sakhon in December, and the third wave that broke out in Bangkok in late March and spread to nearly all provinces.

Meanwhile, the first quarter has only seen 78,600 flights take off, or 66.3 per cent fewer than 154,000 flights in the first quarter of last year. Of these 62,600 flights were domestic and the rest international, down 53 per cent and 84 per cent year on year respectively.

The first quarter also saw a 16-per-cent drop in air cargo, logging in at just 283,000 tonnes. Some 277,000 tonnes was international and the remainder domestic, marking a drop of 13.8 per cent and 59.7 per cent year on year respectively.

Airports recording the highest number of passengers in the first quarter were Don Mueang at 1.8 million passengers, followed by Suvarnabhumi (1.5 million), Chiang Mai (560,000), Phuket (460,000) and Hat Yai (420,000). Airports with the highest number of flights during the period were Suvarnabhumi (29,000), followed by Don Mueang (17,000), Chiang Mai (5,200), Phuket (4,400) and Hat Yai (3,500).

Signing up for jab can win you a calf up North

Residents of Chiang Mai’s Mae Chaem district will get the chance to win a calf once they register for their Covid jab.

Signing up for jab can win you a calf up North

In line with Thailand’s mission to have 70 per cent of each province’s population inoculated to achieve herd immunity, at least 1.13 million of Chiang Mai’s 1.73 million residents will need to get their first jab, said the provincial authority’s permanent secretary Kanok Srivichainan.

He said the plan is to inoculate 68,000 people next month, followed by 419,000 in July, 238,000 in August and 408,000 in September.

He added that people from elsewhere who are working or studying in Chiang Mai can also register for a jab.

“District officials have launched campaigns to encourage people to get their jab,” he said, adding that the Mae Chaem lucky draw will continue until 70 per cent of the district’s people have been vaccinated.

Mae Chaem district chief Boonlue Thammanurak said people in the district have been raising calves to earn money during the Covid-induced downturn.

“Since the lucky draw was launched, 4,506 or 40 per cent of the 11,513 people at risk have registered for their Covid-19 jab,” he said.

The elderly and people with chronic conditions are most likely to develop severe symptoms if infected by the Covid-19 virus.

29 police officers being investigated over smuggling of migrant labourers

The Royal Thai Police Headquarters (RTP) on Wednesday appointed a committee to investigate 29 officers who might have been involved in the smuggling of migrant labourers into Thailand, a news source revealed.

“The committee will be chaired by RTP special adviser Pol General Jaruwat Waisaya, while National Police deputy chief Pol General Damrongsak Kittipraphas will supervise the investigation,” the source said.

“Some 29 police officers have been listed as under investigation,” he added.

Illegal migrants have become an increasingly serious problem for Thailand, especially during the Covid-19 crisis, and the instability in Myanmar since earlier this year, which have driven thousands of labourers to enter Thailand to seek shelter or to find jobs that often pay better than the ones back home.

Some of these migrants slipped into Thailand on their own while many others were smuggled in by local syndicates, which collect hefty fees to take them to industrial zones in various provinces, where demand for cheap labour is high.

“The pilot reportedly saw a man and a woman dashing into a hut that was built in a protected area after they spotted the chopper approaching. The man subsequently ran out with a homemade gun and fired a round towards the rear of the helicopter, but the bullet missed,” the department added.

After the incident, the pilot landed the chopper at the Jai Phaen Din ranger base about 7 kilometres away.

No walk-in vaccinations at Bang Sue Grand Station yet #SootinClaimon.Com

No walk-in vaccinations at Bang Sue Grand Station yet

Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob said on Wednesday that a planned walk-in Covid vaccination service at Bang Sue Central Station in Bangkok was under discussion after the prime minister called a halt to the move on Tuesday.

No walk-in vaccinations at Bang Sue Grand Station yet

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha put the brakes on the plan over concern it could trigger overcrowding and vaccine shortages at jab points.

The PM intervened after Saksayam announced on Monday that the station would provide walk-in jabs for transport workers from May 24 before expanding the service to the general public from June 1.

On Wednesday, Saksayam said the jabs for transport staff would go ahead as scheduled.

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said the Bang Sue Grand Station service was not a model for walk-in vaccinations. Instead, the Transport Ministry had set up a centre at the station to jab between 10,000 and 100,000 public bus drivers, taxi drivers, airport checkpoint workers and others, he added.

The plan for walk-in vaccination is just a backup, said Anutin.

Meanwhile, people must book vaccinations through the Mor Prom application or prior registration at vaccination centres.

5 new Bangkok virus clusters take total to 34

Bangkok authorities announced the discovery of five new Covid-19 clusters on Wednesday, bringing the total in the capital to 34. The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said the clusters had spawned 876 new cases on Wednesday.

5 new Bangkok virus clusters take total to 34

The five new clusters are at Bangkapi Market, construction workers’ camps in Bang Kho Laem and Don Muang, an ice factory in Chatuchak, and a rented warehouse in Bang Sue.

The CCSA is especially concerned about outbreaks at workers’ camps in the city.

Several districts have more than 1,000 workers each in construction camps, including Bang Kapi, Bang Khen, Lat Phrao, Huay Kwang, Bang Khae and Bang Kho Laem, according to CCSA spokesman Apisamai Srirangsan.

Camps where infections are found are being sealed to isolate the workers. Workers at camps located on construction sites can continue to building tasks as normal.

For others, a “bubble” system will use shuttle buses to ferry workers to and from the sites.

Officials also urged locals living close to camps and construction sites to help monitor the situation. Any workers spotted drinking alcohol in groups should be reported to authorities, they said.
