Bangkok gets its 4th vaccination station, 21 more to be set up within May

The process of setting up a vaccination site on the second floor of a Big C shopping mall in Bang Bon area was overseen on Tuesday by Bangkok governor Asin Kwanmuang.

Shots will be administered to up to 3,000 people from 8.30am to 4.30pm at this site daily, the governor said.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), in cooperation with the Board of Trade, has set up vaccination stations in three locations so far – Central Plaza Lat Phrao, the Mall Bang Kapi and Samyan Mitrtown. The aim is to set up 25 such stations across the city by the end of this month.

Meanwhile, jabs are currently being administered to registered at-risk frontline workers such as teachers, bus drivers, garbage collectors, delivery and daycare centre staff before it is rolled out to the general public in June.

Aswin said the Public Health Ministry will give BMA 5 million doses to inoculate Bangkok residents over June and July. The capital has more than 8 million residents and more than 70 per cent of them will have to be vaccinated to achieve herd immunity.

“BMA plans to vaccinate 2.5 million people per month,” he said. “With 126 hospitals and 25 vaccination stations across the capital, we expect to deliver at least 60,000 jabs daily.”

Meanwhile, BMA spokesman Pongsakorn Kwanmuang said City Hall may set up a web-based platform as an alternative for people aged between 18 and 59 to register for a jab at one of the 25 vaccination stations.

“The BMA will coordinate with the Board of Trade and convenience stores, like 7-Eleven, to help everybody get their jab. The application will be launched next week,” he said.

The association was set to withdraw the team from the tournament earlier this month after 22 players and staff contracted Covid-19 at their training camp in Nakhon Pathom. However, the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) allowed the team to change the roster by switching out the infected players.

On Wednesday the athletes and staff will get a final test to confirm that they are free of Covid-19 before departing to Italy on the night of May 20. Their first match will be against Japan on May 25 at 8pm.

No lockdown necessary for Bangkok: Public Health Minister

There is no need to impose a lockdown in Bangkok as most of the Covid-19 cases discovered in the city have mild symptoms, Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said.

No lockdown necessary for Bangkok: Public Health Minister

He was speaking after attending a meeting on the Covid-19 situation and allocation of vaccines with Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Monday.

Anutin said the spread of the virus in prisons and construction sites can be contained by closing the areas and setting up field hospitals inside to treat patients based on their symptoms.

He said 70 per cent of Covid-19 patients in the country had mild symptoms, 20 per cent were at risk due to chronic conditions, while 10 per cent had developed severe symptoms.

“The government will also allocate vaccines for patients inside prisons,” he said.

He added that 1.7 million doses of Sinovac and AstraZeneca will be delivered to Thailand towards the end of May, which should help kick off the mass rollout.

“Initial allocation will be based on the situation in each area. For instance, people in areas at risk of infection will receive AstraZeneca vaccines to contain the spread as soon as possible, while those in other areas will receive Sinovac,” he said.

The baht opened at 31.48 to the US dollar on Tuesday, weakening from Monday’s closing rate of 31.45.

Baht faces downward pressure from virus crisis, exodus of foreign funds

The Thai currency is likely to move between 31.40 and 31.55 during the day, Krungthai Bank market strategist Poon Panichpibool said.

Poon predicted that the dollar would weaken as European economies became positive gradually.

He added that currencies in Asia, including the baht, would tend to weaken due to Covid-19.

In Thailand, as a result of the virus crisis, foreign investors had sold Thai stocks and bonds. Since last week, at least THB8.8 billion worth of bonds had been sold.

The weakening baht would face resistance at 31.50 to the US dollar, as it is a point at which exporters aimed to sell their dollars, Poon said.

Defence Ministry says not advisable to compare budgets of different ministries, after opposition criticism

The Defence Ministry on Monday said that each ministry has different missions and responsibilities, and therefore the budgets allotted to each of them should not be directly compared.

Defence Ministry says not advisable to compare budgets of different ministries, after opposition criticism

Ministry spokesman Lt-General Kongcheap Tantrawanich was reacting to an earlier remark by the Opposition questioning why the defence budget for 2022 was higher than that of the Public Health Ministry amid the Covid-19 situation.

“The Defence Ministry has been lowering its budget since 2020, taking into account the current situation,” he said.

“Our 2020 budget was slashed by THB18 billion compared to the previous year, while the 2021 budget dropped further by THB17.2 billion. The trend continues even next year.

“The mission of the Defence Ministry is to defend the country and provide assistance to people in times of crisis, especially during the Covid-19 outbreak where every party must work together,” he added.

“The Army, Navy and Air Force are well aware of the government’s increasing burden because of the pandemic and have cut down unnecessary spending as can be seen from the decreasing budget since 2020,” the spokesman said.
