Thailand still a perfect stage for international films

NationalApr 12. 2021

By The Nation

As many as 26 foreign films have been made in Thailand in the first three months of 2021 and have generated Bt1.18 billion in revenue, Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson Thani Saengrat said on Sunday.

He added that the film board is considering another four or five applications from film producers.

There are several reasons why Thailand is attractive to foreign filmmakers:

• Permission is granted very fast. If all documents are ready, approval is given within five days as the film board meets three times a week.

• Thai filming crew are skilled and have experience working with world-class filmmakers, especially from Hollywood. Thailand also has good quality studios and props, so shots of the New York subway, Japan’s Ginza district, a sci-fi set among others can all be shot easily.

• Thailand offers beautiful locations and great infrastructure.

• Plenty of incentives. If a production house invests more than Bt50 million, mostly uses Thai workers and promotes the image of Thailand, it can get cash rebates of up to 20 per cent.

Though the country is struggling under the new normal, the film industry is still generating income and maybe a strong driving force for economic recovery post-Covid-19.

Only five of the cases; two Thais, a Russian, a Serbian, and a Swedish, were overseas arrivals in quarantine facilities.

Of the total, 634 people were exposed to the disease while visiting high-risk areas. Proactive testing led to the discovery of 346 cases.

Meanwhile, 34 patients have recovered and been discharged in the last 24 hours.

As of Wednesday, the number of confirmed cases in Thailand had risen to 33,610. Of these, 30,407 had been contracted locally, including 17,877 who were found via proactive testing, while 3,203 were returnees. BMA to accelerate vaccine drive to control outbreak as 659 test positive

NationalApr 12. 2021

By The Nation

Of the 8,060 people who were tested for Covid-19 during April 3-10, 659 have tested positive, 3,357 were negative and 4,044 results are awaited, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) said.

The BMA has been conducting an active search operation among people involved with entertainment venues.

Chawin Sirinak, BMA deputy permanent secretary, said the authorities would vaccinate high-risk people and employees around Thong Lor’s entertainment venues to control the outbreak. He said it was one of the measures to prevent and control the spread of the epidemic, similar to giving Covid-19 vaccination to people at risk in the market and the communities surrounding the market in Bang Khae district.

The vaccination plan is in accordance with the resolution of the Bangkok Sub-Committee for the Management of Vaccination against Corona Virus Disease 2019 on April 5, after epidemiological experts informed them that one of the processes to control the spread of disease is vaccination because it reduces the chance of infection and symptoms when infected. However, this does not mean that people who take the vaccine will not get infected.

The BMA said it would vaccinate people in conjunction with other measures, such as disease investigation, isolation control, quarantine, surveillance of risk groups, proactive search for patients in endemic areas, etc.

Baht likely to weaken from sales of currency due to Covid-19 wave

NationalApr 12. 2021

By THE NATION

The baht opened at 31.49 to the US dollar on Monday, weakening from its close of 31.47 on Friday.

The Thai currency is likely to move between 31.25 and 31.65 this week and between 31.40 and 31.55 during the day, Krungthai Bank market strategist Poon Panichpibool said.

Last week, economies across the world saw some recovery from expansion of the service sector, which surpassed observers’ expectations.

Poon suggested that investors monitor the US dollar trend, which could strengthen in line with the movement of US Ten-Year Treasury.

The market strategist forecast that some investors would reduce their baht holdings, due to the new Covid-19 wave in Thailand. Their move will weaken the baht, he added.

Airlines banned from selling food, drinks to passengers on domestic flights

NationalApr 12. 2021

By THE NATION

The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) has prohibited airlines from serving food and drinks to passengers on board planes flying domestic routes, except in emergency cases, with effect from April 13, in a bid to curb the spread of Covid-19.

The order, signed by CAAT chairman Suttipong Kongpool, also covers eating and drinking of food or beverages brought by passengers.

The decision came after a new wave was reported in Bangkok earlier this month, which quickly spread to several provinces nationwide.

The ban will be in effect until the situation improves or a new regulation is announced.

The CAAT also has prohibited the distribution of newspapers, magazines or any pamphlets to passengers on flights, except those related to safety, in order to minimise passengers touching surfaces that could spread the virus. Selling of souvenirs or duty-free goods in-flight is also prohibited.

Other measures that airlines need to follow include installing infrared thermal scanners for passengers and staff, enforcing the wearing of face mask at all times on board except in emergency cases, and following social distancing.

For flights that are longer than 90 minutes, the airline must reserve the last two rows of seats at the back to quarantine passengers suspected of being infected.

Final Bt1,000 instalment under handout scheme transferred

NationalApr 12. 2021

By THE NATION

The fourth and last instalment of Bt1,000 has been transferred to those who had qualified under the “Mor33 Rao Rak Kan” (Section33 We Love Each Other) cash-handout scheme, the Social Security Office said on Monday.

Thai nationals under the social security scheme who did not hold a state welfare card, had not joined the Rao Chana (We Win) scheme and had less than Bt500,000 in financial deposits (as of December 31, 2020), were eligible for the handout.

Those eligible were given Bt1,000 per week for four weeks — on March 22 and 29; and April 5 and 12. They can use the funds until May 31 via the Pao Tang application at participating merchants.

The office urged recipients to use the money before the expiry date, as any leftover amount cannot be transferred to any future cash handout programmes.

Some 9.27 million people were eligible to receive subsidies totalling Bt37.1 billion under the scheme, which aimed to boost recovery of the country’s pandemic-hit economy.

The new Covid-19 wave has infected 113 police officers, Pol Colonel Sirikul Kritphitthayaboon, deputy spokeswoman of the Royal Thai Police Headquarters, said on Sunday.

“Nationwide, 113 police officers have been hospitalised after contracting the virus. Bureaus that reported the most infections were: Metropolitan Police (52 officers), followed by Region 5 Provincial Police (20), Tourism Police (7) and Central Investigation (5),” she said.

“Also, 961 officers are in quarantine as they had close contacts with fellow officers who got infected.

“Three officers have been cured since the latest wave. They are from the Immigration Police Bureau,” she added.

National Police chief Pol General Suwat Jangyodsuk has urged all officers to employ preventive measures against Covid-19, as well as exercise the highest caution when interacting with public from risky groups, especially during the Songkran holidays [April 10-15] when the number of road accidents often spike, Sirikul said.

“All units have been told to employ work-from-home approach where applicable to reduce the risk of the virus further spreading, provided public services were not affected,” she added.
