Some 6,000 rounds of ammunition for M16 assault rifle and 52 K75 anti-personnel grenades were found in four packages at a courier service company in Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district.

They were labelled to be delivered to Tachileik in Myanmar.

Mae Sai Police Station were alerted about the suspicious packages by the company’s staff on Monday after finding that the four boxes were unusually heavy.

Inside the boxes, officials found ammunition and explosives wrapped in newspaper. All the boxes were sent by the same person with the same mobile phone number in Chonburi province, while the recipient’s address is in Tachileik town in Myanmar.

Officials tracked down the persons who had dropped the boxes off at the company and arrested Manokorn (last name withheld), aged 30 years, a local of Mae Sai, and Songsak (last name withheld), the driver of the van that carried the boxes. Both suspects reportedly said they were hired by another person to drop the packages off and that they did not know of the contents in the boxes.

Officials are gathering evidence to track down the sender as well as the recipient, while the two suspects were initially charged with possessing unregistered ammunition and explosives.

Court accepts protesters’ complaints, tells prison officials to follow official hours

NationalMar 29. 2021

By THE NATION

The Criminal Court ruled on Monday that prison officials’ attempt to remove protesters from their jail cell late at night purportedly for Covid-19 tests was a violation of their rights.

The court also said inmates can only be tested or moved during normal hours in line with regulations.

On March 16, human-rights lawyer Arnon Nampa wrote that officials at the Bangkok Remand Prison had visited the cell at 9pm the previous day to usher fellow Ratsadon group members – Panupong “Mike” Jadnok and Jatupat “Pai Dao Din” Boonpattararaksa – out for a Covid-19 test.

However, Arnon said he and others in the cell stopped the two from following the prison guards as the act was suspicious, especially since it was at night.

The officials then left their cell and returned in larger numbers three times, at 11.45pm, 12.15am and 2.30am. Arnon said all officials were armed with batons, adding that there were also some men in blue uniforms with no name tags.

The court interrogated Arnon and other related persons before deciding that such late-night activity in prison was a violation of the inmates’ rights.

Transport Co adds 5,000 bus trips per day during Songkran

NationalMar 29. 2021

By THE NATION

State-run interprovincial bus operator Transport Company will add 5,000 bus trips per day over the six-day Songkran holiday (April 10 to 15), its president Sanyalak Panyawatthanalikhit said on Monday.

“We estimate that around 110,000 people per day will use the Bangkok Bus Terminal [Mo Chit 2] in Chatuchak to travel to their hometowns during the Songkran festival, so we will increase bus trips by 5,000 per day starting from April 10 to ensure that no passengers are left behind,” he said.

About 70 per cent of bus tickets to the North and Northeast during Songkran have already been reserved, said Sanyalak, advising travellers to book online to avoid crowding at the bus terminal.

Cooperation has been sought from police to manage traffic flow in and out of the terminal and ensure safety of passengers waiting for buses. “We have also employed Covid-19 preventive measures, including mandatory face masks, thermal scanner checkpoints and social distancing on services,” Sanyalak added.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration has banned all water-splashing activities, making Songkran a dry event for the second year running in a bid to curb the outbreak. However, massive numbers of Thais are still expected to travel back to their hometowns to be with their families for Songkran as well as National Elderly Day on April 13 and National Family Day on April 14.

Police hunt for online surfskate sharks after scams steal millions

NationalMar 29. 2021

By The Nation

Police warned on Monday that the new craze known as surfskating is attracting online sharks who are taking a big bite out of innocent consumers. Social media users have advised netizens to be cautious when ordering surfskate boards online after fake sellers stole more than B2.7 million from over 100 victims.

Police spokesman Krisana Pattanacharoen said on Monday that legal action would be taken quickly against anyone caught operating an online surfskate scam.

Surfskating, also known as carveboarding, has become a trendy sport during the Covid-19 era as people can do it anywhere.

Krisana said surfskate equipment was in short supply, meaning customers were pre-ordering boards with online traders.

“Criminals have taken this opportunity to launch sales scams by offering discounts for people who pay the full price,” he said.

The scammers take the money transfer but fail to deliver the boards.

Those found guilty of online surfskate scams face up to three years in prison and/or a fine of up to Bt60,000, Krisana warned.

“They face up to five years in prison and/or a fine of up to Bt100,000 fine if they scam multiple victims,” he added.

National Police chief Suwat Chaengyodsuk has ordered the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau to catch the criminals while also boosting netizens’ awareness of how to avoid becoming victims.

“To avoid falling victim to sales scams, people should check online traders’ information carefully, read customers’ product reviews and use cash-on-delivery services while purchasing goods via online channels,” Krisana said.

The State Enterprise Policy Office (SEPO) has approved government investment this year in four public-private partnership (PPP) infrastructure projects worth a total Bt162.95 billion. The four are among 10 projects worth Bt200 billion that SEPO’s Public-Private Partnership Committee is screening for government investment in 2021.

The four projects are:

1. Bangkok’s Purple Line southern extension (Tao Poon-Rat Burana), valued at Bt124.7 billion.

2. Construction and management of rest areas on Bang Pa-In-Nakhon Ratchasima highway (Bt1.6 billion).

3. Construction and management of rest areas on Bang Yai-Kanchanaburi highway (Bt1.45 billion).

4. First phase of Phuket mass transit system from Phuket Airport to Chalong Intersection (Bt35.2 billion).

The committee also revised the draft plan for long-term PPP investment (2020-2027), reducing the number of projects from 92 worth Bt1.09 trillion to 77 projects worth Bt1 trillion, said SEPO director-general Panthip Sriphimol.

“Of these, 20 projects are considered urgent and require immediate investment of Bt503.15 billion,” she added.

Meanwhile, Pakapong Sirikantaramas, governor of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA), said the MRTA expects to sell bidding envelopes for construction of the Purple Line Tao Poon-Rat Burana section by June, with bidding due to take no more than two months.

“Construction should start by December this year, and we estimate the section will open for public use in March 2027,” he said.

Bangkok authorities started reorganising the mess of power and communication cables from Charansanitwong Road to Saphan Mon Bridge on Monday.

The decision to clear the mess was made after Bangkok governor Pol General Aswin Kwanmuang received complaints from Bangkok Noi residents on February 25.

“They wanted the governor to solve problems related to safety, health and environment in their area, and sorting out the mess of cables on Charansanitwong Road was one of their demands,” deputy governor Pol Lt-General Sopon Pisuttiwong said.

Sopon said the project of clearing overhead cables across approximately 4 kilometres should be completed by the end of April.

Commerce Ministry boosts Thai food exporters with Covid Prevention Best Practice Certificate

NationalMar 29. 2021

By THE NATION

The Commerce Ministry has launched the “Thailand Deliver with Safety” campaign to boost confidence in Thai food products during the Covid-19 pandemic, highlighting safe manufacturing practices.

In 2020, four government ministries – Commerce, Public Health, Agriculture and Cooperatives and Interior – jointly signed an MOU on Covid-19 Prevention Best Practice in production of food for export, aiming to grant Certification of Compliance with Covid-safe practices to Thai businesses whose manufacturing practices meet international standards.

Somdet Susomboon, director-general of the ministry’s Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), revealed, “During the Covid-19 pandemic, consumers take extra caution when purchasing food products, prioritising the ingredient sources as well as reliable manufacturing practices.

The DITP has kicked off the “Thailand Deliver with Safety” campaign to boost confidence and reassure global trading partners and buyers that Thailand is a major source and leading global exporter of safe food products, including raw materials, agricultural products, vegetables and fruits, ready to eat food, frozen food and halal food, he added.

“The campaign ensures that Thai food manufacturers utilise advanced technology and global standards through manufacturing and packing to shipping.”

The Department of Fisheries has so far issued 72 certificates for Covid-19 Prevention Best Practice to 72 factories producing chilled, frozen or canned seafood. The factories are in Samut Sakhon (32), Songkhla (8), Chachoengsao (5), Rayong (5), Samut Prakan (5), Phetchaburi (4), Ranong (3), Chumphon (2) Nakhon Pathom (2), Bangkok (1), Ayutthaya (1), Pathum Thani (1), Chonburi (1) Satun (1), Kanchanaburi (1), Phang Nga (1), Phuket (1) and Trang (1).

Despite overall economic contraction in 2020, exports of Thai agricultural and food products actually grew in the second half of the year, generating US$13.640.80 billion for 1.4 per cent year-on-year growth.

The top five Thai food exports were:

1. Fresh, chilled, frozen and dried vegetables and fruits

2. Fresh, chilled, canned and processed seafood (excluding fresh, chilled, frozen and processed shrimp)

3. Rice

4. Fresh, chilled, frozen and processed chicken

5. Cassava products.

More Thai food manufacturers are set to obtain the Certificate of Covid-19 Prevention Best Practice to meet growing demand and retain the trust of the global market.
