More than 40,000 Bangkokians in districts bordering Samut Sakhon province have received their Covid-19 jabs, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA)’s deputy permanent secretary Chawin Sirinak said on Thursday.

He said 44,034 people, including medical personnel and patients with chronic conditions, living in the districts of Chom Thong, Bang Khunthien, Bang Khae, Bang Bon, Phasi Charoen and Nong Khaem, have been inoculated.

He said other Bangkok residents will receive their jabs from June onwards.

“Even though people have been vaccinated, they still have to control the transmission of Covid-19 by maintaining social distancing, wearing facemasks, washing hands regularly, checking the body temperature and using the ThaiChana platform,” he said.

Tokyo Olympic torch relay begins; Thailand ready to raise flag

NationalMar 25. 2021

By THE NATION

The Olympic torch was lit in Japan this morning to launch the official countdown to the postponed 2020 Tokyo Games.

The Japan women’s football team kicked off the relay at the J-Village training complex in Fukushima, on the 10th anniversary of the 2011 earthquake-tsunami and meltdown of three local nuclear reactors.

Under the relay theme “Hope Lights Our Way”, the first of 10,000 torchbearers was Azusa Iwashimizu, a member of the Japanese women’s football team that won the 2011 World Cup.

The torch is on a 120-day journey through 857 locations, culminating in the opening ceremony at the National Stadium in Tokyo on July 23. The relay is being kept low-key, with crowds discouraged to ensure compliance with Covid-19 controls. The pandemic forced postponement of the Olympics last year.

Thailand launches its own Games countdown on Sunday, when the “Flag of Nation” relay run will set off on a journey of 61 days through 35 provinces. Starting from the National Stadium in Bangkok, the Thai flag will be carried by 4,568 bearers – athletes, celebrities and members of the public – before being delivered to Suvarnabhumi Airport to take off with Thai Olympic athletes on May 27.

Spectators can watch the flag runners as they make their way through Bangkok, Samut Sakhon, Samut Songkhram, Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, Phatthalung, Ratchaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Kanchanaburi, Suphan Buri, Chainat, Nakhon Sawan, Kamphaeng, Phet Tak, Pang Lap, Lamphun, Chiang Mai, Phrae, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok, Phetchabun, Chaiyaphum, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buri Ram, Sa Kaeo, Chanthaburi, Rayong, Chon Buri, Chachoengsao, and Samut Prakan.

Old city moat to become new Bangkok attraction

NationalMar 25. 2021

By THE NATION

Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is preparing to turn the historic Phadung Krung Kasem canal into a new city attraction, complete with walkways and a park.

The 5.5-kilometre canal connects at both ends with the Chao Phraya River, enclosing the historic capital of Rattanakosin and dividing it from inner Bangkok districts like Bang Rak, Pathumwan, and Dusit.

“We are planning to improve the landscape along the canal and turn it into a new city landmark,” said BMA permanent secretary Silapasuay Raweesaengsoon on Thursday.

“New footpaths and a public park will be built to attract tourists, while the electric boat service will be upgraded for commuters.”

The electric boat service runs from 6am to 7pm at 15-minute intervals on weekdays, and every 30 minutes from 8am to 7pm on weekends and holidays. Passengers can travel for free during the current six-month trial period, which will end in May with the introduction of a Bt10 fare.

The BMA expects to approve the canal’s development plan and budget next month.

The canal was constructed in 1851 as the second moat to guard the growing capital of Rattanakosin.

Pic of Benz being charged for free in Parliament sparks anger online

The Thai social media was bubbling over again after the photograph of an S-class Mercedez Benz owned by a coalition MP was shown charging in the Parliament complex.

Guards said this car is charged for free quite frequently without permission or even acknowledgment by officers.

Meanwhile, Pornpit Petchcharoen, deputy secretary-general of the House of Representatives, said the secretariat has never allowed any MP or government official to recharge their private cars in Parliament.

He added that this matter will be examined and members will be told to follow Parliament regulations.

Parliamentarians are frequently caught causing problems for others. Just recently, some MPs were slammed on social media for using disabled parking.

Man said to be behind tweet against Prayut’s twins answers police summons

NationalMar 25. 2021

The alleged poster of a message threatening the prime minister’s twin daughters showed up at Nang Lerng Police Station in Bangkok in response to police summons.

Wutthichai (last name withheld), 40, was summoned to acknowledge charges under the Criminal Code’s Sections 85 and 392.

Section 85 stipulates that anyone who propagates or publishes content calling on the general public to commit an offence, and if the said offence is punishable by a prison term of no less than six months, shall be liable to one-half of the punishment for such offence.

Section 392 stipulates that whoever puts a person in fear via a threat shall be punished with a prison sentence of up to one month and/or a fine of Bt1,000.

Wutthichai allegedly posted a Twitter message on March 20 reading: “If anyone sees Prayut’s daughters, don’t forget to rape them”. He apparently deleted the post soon after, but some users managed to take screenshots.

Prime Minister Prayut Cha-o-cha responded two days later, saying: “My children and family have done nothing wrong. Whoever has done this should face defamation charges.” He added that his legal team will take care of the matter.

Wutthichai was not interrogated or detained on Thursday as he reportedly willingly handed his mobile phone over to investigators to track his usage. He was allowed to leave after the meeting was over.

The Supreme Court rejected rock star Seksan “Sek Loso” Sukphimai’s appeal on Thursday and upheld the lower court’s verdict.

The rock star was immediately taken into custody and removed to Minburi Remand Prison. However, he was granted bail by the Min Buri Criminal Court later in the day.

Seksan was arrested at his home on December 31, 2017, for allegedly shooting a gun inside a temple compound in Nakhon Si Thammarat as well as resisting arrest.

He was also charged with being in illegal possession of a gun and ammunition, carrying weapons in public without a justifiable reason and shooting in public without justifiable reason.

Seksan was initially sentenced to two years and 21 months, but the Appeals Court later reduced his sentence by three months to 2 years and 18 months in prison.

Seksan was granted bail for a guarantee of Bt500,000 on October 25, 2018, so he could take his appeal to Supreme Court.

East of Thailand’s gambling kingpin nabbed over murder allegations

NationalMar 25. 2021

By THE NATION

Police on Thursday raided 21 sites and re-arrested casino operator Somchai Jutikitdecha aka Longchoo Somchai, 56, over allegedly ordering the murder of an informant.

The operation, covering 21 sites in Rayong, Chanthaburi, Chonburi and Bangkok, kicked off at 6am on Thursday with police showing up at Somchai’s 2-rai home in Rayong’s Muang district.

When nobody answered the bell, officers climbed over the wall and entered the grounds, to find Somchai and his son Thana, 26, hiding. Thana was also arrested over gambling and money laundering charges.

Somchai was slapped with the charge of ordering the killing of a taxi motorcyclist in Pattaya on July 28, 2020.

Prathum Sa-adnak, 47, had been shot dead by two contract killers, who claimed they had killed the man due to a personal conflict.

However, the dead man’s relatives did not accept this excuse and took the case to National Police chief Pol General Suwat Jadyongsuk.

Prathum had taken photographs of a gambling den in Chonburi, which was subsequently raided by police.

Investigators later found the killing linked to the operators of the gambling den and Somchai.

Somchai had been arrested earlier this year for his links to a network of illegal gambling dens in the East, which were found to be the source of several Covid-19 clusters. He was released on bail shortly after.

Bangkok to turn off its lights for Earth Hour on Saturday

NationalMar 25. 2021

By The Nation

Bangkok will be among the 7,000 other cities across the world that will be plunged in darkness for an hour on Saturday as part of 60+ Earth Hour 2021, deputy Bangkok governor Sopon Pisuttiwong said on Saturday.

Sopon Pisuttiwong

Sopon PisuttiwongAlso marking the effort will be the “Speak Up For Nature” campaign to be launched at CentralWorld at 7pm on Saturday.

People can do their bit for the Earth by turning off unnecessary lights in their homes for an hour from 8.30pm to 9.30pm and record their contribution via the #connect2earth, #SpeakUpForNature and #BangkokSustainability hashtags.

Lights will be turned off from 8.30pm for an hour at the Emerald Buddha Temple and Grand Palace; Wat Arun or the Temple of Dawn; Sao Ching Cha or the Giant Swing; Rama VIII Bridge; and the Golden Mount or Wat Saket.

Lights will also be turned off in 126 sites in the city, while the owners of buildings in 100 city streets have also promised to join the campaign.

Bangkok has also invited all sectors to join its efforts to reduce global warming and to cooperate with the city in four areas, namely public transportation, energy, green spaces and waste management.

The City of Angels has been part of the Earth Hour effort since 2008. Last year, one hour of darkness in Bangkok reduced electricity consumption by 2,483 megawatts, thus reducing 1,219 tonnes of carbon dioxide and saving Bt10.15 million.

Since 2008, Bangkok has reduced its carbon footprint by 12,227 tonnes and saved Bt80.87 million in electricity bills.

Ruling party MP Pareena suspended, set to face court on encroachment charges

By THE NATION

The Supreme Court accepted the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC)’s lawsuit against Palang Pracharath MP Pareena Kraikupt on Thursday morning, and subsequently suspended the MP from her duties.

Pareena had made national headlines last year when NACC found her guilty of severe ethical misconduct after her poultry farm was found to be sitting on plots intended for landless farmers as well as encroaching into national forest reserves in Ratchaburi’s Chom Bung district.

The anti-graft agency took the case to Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Political Office Holders and the MP is scheduled to face the court on April 30.

RFD has also filed four charges against Pareena, namely trespassing on national forest reserves; residing, building or making profits off reserved forest land; defacing or destroying state-owned land without permission; and extracting underground water without permission.

The penalty for these charges is up to 20 years in prison and/or a fine between Bt200,000 and Bt2 million.
