Transport Authorities Set To Push For One Ticket For All Public Transport In Bangkok

In A Bid To Make Public Transport More Convenient For Commuters, The Office Of Transport And Traffic Policy And Planning (OTP) Is Set To Propose The Creation Of Joint Tickets.

This would bring all public transport agencies together and for that to happen a law will have to be enforced.

Punya Chupanit, OTP’s director, told Thansettakij on Saturday that a draft of the act will be presented to a related subcommittee this month. The subcommittee is led by Pisak Jitviriyavasin, the Transport Ministry’s deputy permanent secretary.

Once approved, the draft will be presented to Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob before it is forwarded to the Cabinet, Council of State and then Parliament.

The joint ticket act will set up rules on administration, definition, rates, which agencies will be responsible and how it is funded.

OTP said the joint ticket should not be affected by the EMV Contactless card, which is used on some electric trains and boats. He said the card is one of the standards for the joint ticket and was mentioned in the contract negotiation.

Meanwhile, Surapong Laoha-unya, executive director of the Bangkok Transit System Corporation Ltd (BTSC), said the company was talking to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and Krungthai Bank about creating a joint ticket for both the BTS and MRT.

He said it was not necessary to wait until the BTS Green Line extension row has been resolved because the company had been pushing for a joint ticket with the Rabbit Card for a long time now.

BTSC is also discussing the possibility of implementing the joint card system with BTS Pink and Yellow Lines when they open.

Thailand’s Tourism Industry May Not Achieve The 1.5-Trillion-Baht Revenue Target That The Tourism And Sports Ministry Had Set For This Year.

Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said on Monday that the ministry recently adjusted the tourism target to 1.08 trillion baht based on the current trend of tourists. This would be equivalent to 6 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).

He expects Thailand to welcome 10 million foreign tourists this year, while local tourists are expected to make some 120 million trips.

Foreign arrivals will generate 670 billion baht in revenue, while 410 billion baht will come from Thai tourists, he said.

“As of September 17, Thailand has welcomed 5.43 million foreign tourists,” Phiphat said. “We estimate there will be some 1.5 million foreign arrivals each month in the last quarter of this year, which will help meet the target of 10 million tourists.”

The ministry initially set a target of 1.5 trillion baht in tourism revenue for this year but adjusted it down to 1.2 trillion baht mid-year after realising that there were far few bookings from far-flung countries.

In the last quarter, the following measures are expected to attract more foreigners: reduction of the Long-Term Resident (LTR) visa fee from 100,000 baht to 50,000 baht, extending visa on arrival from 15 days to 30 days and allowing visitors from visa-exempt countries to stay for 45 days instead of 30 days.

The Expressway Authority Of Thailand (Exat) Said It Will Seek Cabinet Approval For The First Phase Of An Expressway Linking Saraburi With Metropolitan Bangkok Late This Year.

The Chalong Rat-Nakhon Nayok expressway is expected to open in 2025.

Exat will hold the second hearing on its elevated section from Bangkok’s Chatu Chot Road in Sai Mai district to the third Bangkok ring road (MR10) before sending the project to Cabinet.

Exat said the project has been modified to link the MR10 with the Kanchanaburi-Sa Kaew motorway (MR 6) in line with the Transport Ministry’s Motorway-Rail (MR) development plan.

The rerouted project needs a redesign and a new environmental impact assessment (EIA) study, Exat said.

It added that the new EIA study covering a two-kilometre section is 40-per-cent complete and should be finalised by early next year, ahead of the May 25 deadline.

“We aim to present the project for Cabinet for approval late this year,” said an Exat source, citing faster-than-expected progress.

Exat expects construction of the first phase to start next year and be completed in 2025.

The budget for the 17km section from Chatu Chote to Lam Lukka has been set at 19 billion baht.

The new road will run from the Chatu Chote gateway via the Kanchanapisek ring road (M9) and Hathai Rat road before ending at Lam Luakka between Klong 9 and Klong 10 in Nakhon Nayok.

The six-lane road – three lanes in each direction – will be equipped with five gates and five exits.

Rules On Cannabis Use – Including A Ban On Smoking The Herb In Public – Are Still In Force Despite The Withdrawal Of The Cannabis And Hemp Bill, The Government Said On Sunday.

The House of Representatives voted on Wednesday to send the bill back to a review committee instead of passing it at the second reading. Democrat and Pheu Thai MPs who voted against the bill complained that it promoted recreational use of marijuana.

However, Public Health Ministry announcements after cannabis was legalised on June 9 dictate that the herb should be used for medical purposes, government spokesperson Traisuree Taisaranakul said on Sunday. She gave the example of a June 15 announcement banning public smoking of cannabis, which carries punishment of up to one year in jail, a 2,000 baht fine or both.

She added that a June 17 announcement limits the amount of cannabis individuals can possess and bans sale of the herb to children and pregnant women. Meanwhile, entrepreneurs must get permission before using cannabis or hemp in foods, medicine or cosmetics.

“Although the cannabis and hemp control bill was sent back to the vetting panel, existing regulations will help control the use of the decriminalised herbs until the bill comes into effect,” she said.

She added that the cannabis policy integration committee, chaired by Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, may launch more measures to ensure the decriminalised herb is used appropriately.
