Countdown to Beijing 2022 | Safe service remains top priority as Beijing 2022 approaches

With less than a month to go until the Beijing Olympic Winter Games, all possible measures have been put in place in order to ensure a safe and secure Games.

“After years of preparations for the Beijing Olympic Winter Games, I think we are ready to provide the best quality services in medical care, accommodation, catering and other aspects,” said Yu Debin, head of the Games Service Department of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (BOCOG).

With Beijing 2022 fast approaching, Yu said the global COVID-19 pandemic must be considered a major threat to the safe operations of the Games.

BOCOG, together with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), recently published the second edition of the Beijing 2022 Playbook that outlines COVID-19 countermeasures for the Games.

For the safety of Olympic-related personnel and the city, a special “closed-loop” system will be implemented. It allows fully vaccinated Olympic-related personnel to enter China without undergoing a compulsory 21-day quarantine.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is spreading globally, and it poses an extra challenge to the safety of the Games and we must take rigorous virus prevention and control measures for Beijing 2022,” Yu said.

“We will do our best to strictly follow the ‘closed-loop’ policy, and I do hope that all of the participants can follow those safety rules. That’s the key to guarantee a secure Games,” he said.

Beijing and co-host Zhangjiakou held a series of test events during the last couple of months, and the COVID-19 countermeasures went smoothly and effectively during those events, Yu noted.

Yu also paid extra attention to the catering service on offer during Games-time.

“There is an old saying in China: The food is what matters most to the people. When I attended international meetings over the past years, overseas friends remembered not only the gold medals that China won in the 2008 Beijing Summer Games, but also the Chinese food. In Beijing 2022, we can still make them remember,” Yu said.

As the Beijing 2022 coincides with China’s Spring Festival, organizers aim to offer a homecoming and festive atmosphere for all participants, with various dishes provided to meet the different dietary needs of athletes.

Some local food, including Beijing roast duck and glutinous rice balls, will be offered to Olympic participants to help them learn more about Chinese cuisines, said Yu.

Anti-virus measures such as social distancing and hand disinfection facilities will be in place in dining halls, according to Yu, and all the catering materials are monitored and made traceable under the support of local government and health authorities.

The 2022 Olympic Winter Games will take place between February 4 and 20, with the Paralympic Winter Games following from March 4 to 13.

Novak Djokovic has won the first round of his battle to play the Australian Open after a judge quashed Canberra’s decision to deny the world No 1 tennis player a visa.

Djokovic wins visa appeal but Australian Open berth still in doubt

Djokovic, 34, was released on Monday after spending a week in Melbourne immigration detention. Judge Anthony Kelly also ordered the Australian government to pay his costs since the government acknowledged that Djokovic was not given enough time to respond to his visa cancellation.

Djokovic’s lawyer Nick Wood told the court that the Serbian tennis star entered the country on the understanding that he was exempt from restrictions that require travellers to be fully vaccinated.

The government’s lawyer, Christopher Tran, protested that Djokovic’s recent Covid infection did not qualify him for an exemption from travel rules that applied to everyone.

Djokovic has said he had tested positive for Covid twice – in June 2020 and on December 16 2021.

However, the tennis great is not yet guaranteed a berth in the season’s opening grand slam. Tran also revealed that Australia’s immigration minister could still exercise his power to cancel Djokovic’s visa.

Teen Star Supergirl Primed For Vandaryeva

Teenage striking star Supergirl has recently switched camps and is ready for her second appearance in ONE Championship.

Teen Star Supergirl Primed For Vandaryeva

The high school senior has been training out of Marrok Force MMA in Bangkok to prepare for her strawweight Muay Thai bout against Ekaterina “Barbie” Vandaryeva at ONE: Heavy Hitters on Friday, 14 January, at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Although the Thai is 11 years younger than her opponent, the Bangkok resident owns a 38-5-1 record

“Not everything depends on age and strength,” Supergirl said. “There are things I can use to fight her, like my techniques.”

One of those techniques is her spearing knee, a weapon she’s perfected and is feared for. Supergirl will no doubt try to use the attack being the taller fighter.

However, she also must be wary of the Belarusian’s strengths – including her kicks.

“Her kicks are super fast, and she looks quite stronger than I am, so I’m now trying to bulk up,” the 18-year-old said.

Supergirl is no stranger to the ONE Circle. She made her debut at ONE: A New Breed II and scorched Milagros Lopez with a right hand just 60 seconds into the bout for the knockout victory.

Despite looking in top form, Supergirl admits she wasn’t entirely in control of the bout.

“I was so nervous in that fight. I didn’t really do what I thought [I should’ve],” Supergirl said.

“Everything happened from muscle memory. Like when I grabbed her leg and punched her, I didn’t plan to do that. It happened automatically because once you’re punched, you punch back.”

“When I won, I felt like it went so fast. I was so nervous, and it ended in just one minute. I didn’t even put my all in yet.”

Now that the Professional Boxing Association Thailand champion has gotten her first ONE matchup out of the way, she’ll be more comfortable in the Circle against Vandaryeva next Friday.

In fact, the high schooler sent a stern warning to her upcoming opponent.

“I might be young,” Supergirl said, “but my punches are not to be fooled around with.”

Thursday’s (January 6) first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Arsenal has been postponed to January 13 after an outbreak of Covid-19 at Anfield.

Liverpool-Arsenal game postponed as virus hits Anfield club

Liverpool confirmed that testing on Tuesday returned a significant number of positive results, including for assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders. Lijnders was due to take charge for this match after Jurgen Klopp tested positive last week.

The first leg will now be held next Thursday at 7.45pm (2.45am Thai time on Thursday), with the return leg at the Emirates Stadium on January 20.

So far, the Premier League has rescheduled 15 matches this season because of Covid-19.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has resisted enforcing lockdown measures despite a growing wave of Omicron infections.

Fans attending Premier League matches must register online with an NHS Covid Pass or negative result of a test taken in the previous 48 hours.

They should also visit the club’s website for instructions on pre-match registration before matchday.

Sadom Prevails at Thailand Mixed #5 for 5th Season Victory

In-form Sadom Kaewkanjana wrapped up his fruitful year on a high note after he beat the inspired Wichayapat Sinsrang by two strokes to win the Bt5 million Thailand Mixed hosted by TrustGolf at the Aquella Golf and Country Club in Phang-Nga on Friday.

Sadom Prevails at Thailand Mixed #5 for 5th Season Victory

The young gun from Narathiwat and the up-and-coming rookie Wichayapat emerged the two strong contenders right from start as they took turn in either dominating or sharing the leaders’ board.
But a gutsy eagle on the 14th hole gained the All Thailand Golf Tour No 1 an upper-hand with a two-shot margin and he held onto the lead to sign off with a final 64 and a four-day overall score of 29 under-par-259.

“That eagle on the 14th really made me more confident which was the key. I’m really confident with my short game and I barely make mistakes. In fact, I committed only two bogeys this week,” said Sadom who took home a handsome money of Bt750,000 for his triumph.

Unquestionably, Sadom has been the most outstanding male golfer this year with five wins (three on the All Thailand Golf Tour, one on the Thailand PGA Tour and one on the Thailand TrustGolf Tour). He also finished in the top 10 from all 11 tournaments he has entered.

“This is beyond my expectation. If you asked me at the start of 2021, I wouldn’t say that I would win five titles. I really have to give credits to my caddie Manop Santhia for his advice and to myself for producing unbelievable short games recently,” said Sadom who will spend a few days resting with his family at the south before resuming practice in Bangkok for two Asian Tour events in Singapore in the next fortnight.

Apart from the prize money, Sadom is also rewarded a free scholarship at Rangsit University to pursue a degree in golf from bachelor’s degree to doctoral level.

Appearing in red shirt, black pants with black cap, the trademark outfit of Tiger Woods, Wichayapat hoped to take some inspiration from the golf super star in his bid for a maiden victory. He started at the first tee-off with a shot advantage and was still one up after 10 holes. However, a disappointing bogey on the 12th allowed Sadom to share equal lead at 25 all and even he fought back with two birdies, it was too late. He finished with 27 under-par-261.

“I really gave it a fight out there, but Sadom was too good. But I’m happy with my golf game and I’ve shown some great results in several tournaments. I hope that I will finally win next year,” said Wichayapat who was born when his father was watching Woods play at The Masters. That’s why he is named Tiger for short by his father.

With dressing style and brown skin, Wichayapat reminded people of Woods back in his days in the US.

“When I was studying in the States (University of Nebraska Omaha), people called me names like the “Big Cat” or the “Jungle Cat”. I liked it.  It was fun,” said Wichayapat who earned Bt500,000 as the runner-up.

Rounding up the top three was two-time champion Prom Meesawat who shot a 65 and a total 25 under-par-263. He will return to his home in Hua Hin Bt300,000 richer from the third placed prize money.

Whiz Kid  Ratchanon Chantananuwat, 14, won the best male amateur while national player Natthakritta Vongtaveelap won the best female amateur  after each shot a 267 at tied sixth.

A total of five Thailand Mixed hosted by TrustGolf have been organised this year. Arpichaya Yubol was the first and only female winner when she triumphed in the inaugural event at the Black Mountain Golf Club in February.

Prom Meesawat and his best friend Chapchai Nirat shared the title together (due to darkness during a play-off) in the second edition at the Alpine Golf Resort in Chiang Mai in April. In October, 17-year-old Ramil Saelim emerged the only amateur winner in the third circuit at the Lake View Resort and Golf Club before Prom claimed his second Thailand Mixed crown at the at the Black Mountain Golf Club in November.
