Man Utd ‘six years’ behind after latest Liverpool thrashing

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick said the Red Devils are “six years” behind Liverpool after being blown away in a 4-0 defeat at Anfield on Tuesday.

Man Utd 'six years' behind after latest Liverpool thrashing

Jurgen Klopp’s men won 5-0 at Old Trafford in October and expectations of a similar rout were well-founded as Liverpool exposed the massive gulf between the sides with Mohamed Salah scoring twice and Luis Diaz and Sadio Mane also on target.

Liverpool move two points ahead of Manchester City at the top of the table, but still need the English champions to slip up in their remaining seven league games of the season to win the title.

Rangnick will step aside at the end of the season, with Ajax manager Erik ten Hag reportedly set to take over.

And the German said the impact Klopp has made on transforming Liverpool’s fortunes is the example for United to follow.

“It is embarrassing, it is disappointing, maybe even humiliating,” said Rangnick.

“We have to accept they are six years ahead of us now. When Jurgen Klopp came they changed at the club and lifted not just the team but the club and city to a new level.

“That is what needs to happen with us in the next transfer windows.”

In contrast to the fine margins separating Liverpool and City, a 22-point gap now lies between the league leaders and United in sixth with only Tottenham and Arsenal’s own failings keeping the Red Devils in the race to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

 LiverpoolLiverpool

Rangnick’s attempt to plug the holes in the United defence was a recall for Phil Jones, making just his second Premier League appearance since January 2020, as part of a back five.

But it took just five minutes for the visitors to be cut open.

Mane’s through ball picked out Salah in acres of space and he found Diaz to apply a simple finish from close range.

“They always try to give us the ball in a one-against-one situations, so it makes our life much easier,” said Salah.

– Support for Ronaldo –

Two minutes later the fierce rivalry between English football’s two most successful clubs was set aside in a show of support for Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese superstar was missing for United after revealing on Monday that his newborn baby son had died.

Supporters on all sides of Anfield stood for a minute’s applause, while the Liverpool fans sang their own anthem “You’ll never walk alone”.

“That was my moment of the game,” said Klopp. “So many things are much more important in life than football, we feel for Cristiano and his family.”

On the field, the one-way traffic continued with United barely able to get out of their own half.

A second Liverpool goal seemed inevitable and when it arrived, it was of the highest quality.

Joel Matip fizzed the ball into Mane’s feet and the Senegalese lofted a first-time pass over the top for Salah.

The Egyptian had not scored for Liverpool from open play since February, but showed no signs of a lack of confidence as he cushioned the ball into his path and slotted low past David de Gea.

Half-time offered United some respite and they improved markedly after the break thanks to the introduction of Jadon Sancho.

But Liverpool were still the lethal side in attack as Mane coolly steered home the third from Diaz’s cross to end any hope of a United revival.

Salah then took his tally for the season to 30, five of which have come in two games against United, as he lifted the ball over De Gea from Diogo Jota’s pass five minutes from time.

Mohamed Salah scored twice as Liverpool comfortably beat old rivals Manchester United 4-0 at Anfield on Tuesday (April 19) to move top of the Premier League, for 24 hours at least.

Liverpool go top after crushing Man United 4-0

Liverpool moved to 76 points from 32 games with title rivals Manchester City on 74 points from one game fewer, with Pep Guardiola’s side hosting Brighton and Hove Albion at the Etihad on Wednesday.

Colombian Luis Diaz gave Liverpool a fifth-minute lead, tapping in from close range after Sadio Mane set Mohamed Salah free down the right and the Egyptian delivered a pinpoint low cross for a simple finish.

In the seventh-minute both sets of fans paid tribute to an absent Cristiano Ronaldo by standing and applauding.

On Monday Ronaldo and his partner Georgina Rodriguez, who announced in October last year they were expecting twins, said one of the two babies, a boy, had died.

United’s problems, however, got worse in the 10th minute when Paul Pogba limped off injured and with Ralf Rangnick’s side struggling to get any foothold in the game, it was no surprise when the home side doubled their advantage.

Mane again provided the spark with a superb first-time pass finding Salah who, having lost his bewildered marker Diogo Dalot, cut in from the right and provided his trademark left-foot finish.

The creator turned finisher in the 68th minute, as Mane made it 3-0 after Andy Robertson broke down the left and then Salah completed the rout five minutes from the end.

Ronaldo played in Manchester United’s recent match on Saturday against Norwich City in Premier League play, scoring a hat trick in a 3-2 victory.

His club and others in the soccer world turned to Twitter to support Ronaldo and his family.

Eagle-eyed Chanettee rises to the challenge

Thailand’s Chanettee Wannasaen nickname is “Proud” and that is something she and her many fans will have been today when she took control of the Trust Golf Asian Mixed Stableford Challenge, after the second round.

Eagle-eyed Chanettee rises to the challenge

She holds the lead on 28 points – an outstanding tally helped by two eagles – at Siam Country Club’s Waterside Course, in the Asian Tour’s first ever Modified Stableford points event.

The US$750,000 tournament is also being jointly sanctioned with the Ladies European Tour.

The in-form 17-year-old from Chiang Mai, the winner of three domestic titles this year already, carded a six-under-par 66.

Thailand’s Natipong Srithong also made two eagles, including on the 18th, to move into second on 25 points with Korean Kyongjun Moon.

Reigning Asian Tour Order of Merit champion Joohyung Kim from Korea is fourth on 24 points and Indonesian Rory Hie is fifth with 23 points.

Rising Swedish star Maja Stark, who made a remarkable 17 points on the back nine thanks to an eagle and six birdies, is in sixth place with Thailand’s Jaravee Boonchant, on 22 points.

Overnight leader Sihwan Kim from the United States had a disappointing day after his opening 62 and shot 76 to finish on 20 points.

“Today, I played very well because I got two eagles and three birdies but on the ninth, my last hole, I got a bogey,” said Wannasaen, whose victories this year include two Trust Golf Mixed events.

“It is okay though because I got two eagles which was 10 points, so that was very good. My shots were perfect today.

“I didn’t change my gameplan, I just focused on myself and on my shots. I want to keep improving at every tournament that I play. For the final two rounds I am going to do the same and just focus on my shots and my routine.”

Eagle-eyed Chanettee rises to the challenge

Natipong is looking for his first win on the Asian Tour since claiming the 2015 Resorts World Manila Masters and put himself in position to do that today after shooting a 63.

“I had a lot of chances for birdies and eagles. I was lucky to make two eagles on par fives. On number eight I hit my second shot near the green and chipped in, and on the last hole I hit driver and three iron onto the green and made a long putt,” he said.

“I’ve never played this format before and I was worried about counting the points, but I think it’s good for my game and mentality to be aggressive and always go for the pin.”

Hie is showing the same kind of form which saw him lead after each of the first three days at the Gurugram Challenge last month on the Asian Development Tour. He eventually tied for fourth but had a very good excuse.

“I had Delhi belly, major headache and diarrhea on the last day,” said Hie.

“But I am kind of riding the momentum from the experience that I had there. Mentally I am more at peace with myself, taking it shot by shot, that seems to work pretty well for me. Staying in the present, deep breaths before each shot, just to make sure my mindset is in the right place. That’s my goal.”

Eagle-eyed Chanettee rises to the challenge

Hie, who became the first player from his country to win on the Asian Tour when claimed the Classic Golf and Country Club International Championship in 2019 (which was played at the same venue as the Gurugram Challenge), said he is also enjoying playing the Stableford format.

He added: “I love this point system. I like it better than strokes because it gets you in a positive mindset, you are getting after the birdies; a birdie then a bogey is better than going par, par, it’s almost kind of like you are freewheeling it out there.”

Thailand’s star attraction Ratchanon “TK” Chantananuwat who claimed last week’s Trust Golf Asian Mixed Cup at the same venue missed the cut for the first time in eight starts on the Asian Tour.

“To be quite honest after I made that last putt on 18 on Sunday I felt really done, I am just tired. I tried my best, I wanted to be in the zone, I wanted world ranking points. No matter how hard I tried the putts would not go in. I just didn’t switch back into the zone I was in last week, or in every other week,” said the 15 year old.

“I got SEA Games next, I won’t let anyone down for that, I know what I need to do. I will practice as hard as I can for that one as what this week has shown me is that I have a curse upon me where if I don’t practice, I can never play good golf, and it seems to me it’s having more of an effect on me than anyone who plays golf.”

The golfing phenom confirmed he will compete in the International Series England and British Amateur in June.

Bayern season can’t be success after Champions League exit-Nagelsmann

Bayern Munich’s season cannot be successful after their Champions League quarter-final exit to Villarreal on Tuesday even if they land their 10th straight Bundesliga title, coach Julian Nagelsmann said.

Bayern season can't be success after Champions League exit-Nagelsmann

The Bavarians conceded a shock 88th minute equaliser for a 1-1 draw and 2-1 aggregate loss to the underdogs, leaving Nagelsmann, in his first season at Bayern, with only the league title up for grabs, after their second-round German Cup exit.

Bayern are nine points clear of second-placed Borussia Dortmund atop the Bundesliga with five matches remaining.

“We are out of the German Cup, out of the Champions League. I don’t think this is good enough for Bayern. We had the semi-finals as our minimum goal and we failed to achieve it,” Nagelsmann said. “It counts as one of my top three defeats.”

The Bavarians had lost the first leg in Spain 1-0 last week when they were lucky not to concede more.

On Tuesday, however, they dominated the game but failed to add to Robert Lewandowski’s 52nd minute srike.

Thomas Mueller came close with a diving header before Villarreal’s Samuel Chukwueze netted on the break to crush the home side’s hopes.

Villarreal will play Liverpool or Benfica in the last four, with the English side leading 3-1 after the first leg in Portugal, with the return at Anfield on Wednesday.

“What happened is we lost the duel. With our performance today you saw the emotions and the good tactics we played. It was quite the opposite from the first leg,” Nagelsmann said.

“We knew they can defend. At the end we missed that second goal. The pressure was good. We defended well. We dominated them for much of the game but it matters little because we are eliminated.”

Chelsea’s Tuchel disappointed referee was ‘smiling and laughing’ with Ancelotti

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel said he was disappointed to see referee Szymon Marciniak “smiling and laughing” with Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti after the Premier League side went out of the Champions League quarter-finals 5-4 on aggregate on Tuesday.

Chelsea's Tuchel disappointed referee was 'smiling and laughing' with Ancelotti

Trailing 3-1 from the first leg at Stamford Bridge, holders Chelsea looked on course for an astonishing comeback after taking a 3-0 lead in the return leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.

However, the hosts leveled the tie at 4-4 with 10 minutes left before Karim Benzema scored in extra time to put Real Madrid through to the semi-finals.

Tuchel told a news conference he was disappointed that Marciniak was having “a good time with Carlo” after the final whistle.

“When I wanted to go and say thank you, he was smiling and laughing with the opponent’s coach,” Tuchel added.

“I think this is the very wrong time to do this after the final whistle, 126 minutes of a team giving their heart. When you go and see a referee smiling and laughing with the other coach, it’s bad timing. I told him this.”

ChelseaChelsea

Tuchel was also unhappy that Marciniak had not checked the VAR monitor himself when Marcos Alonso’s effort was disallowed for handball in the second half.

“I didn’t see the goal but I am super disappointed he didn’t come out and check it on his own,” Tuchel said. “You should stay the boss and not give the decisions to someone in a chair who is isolated.”

 Real MadridReal Madrid

The German also said his side had left everything on the pitch in trying to turn the tie around.

“We went to the full limit today. I’m very proud of my players and I think we deserved to qualify but luck was not on our side,” Tuchel said.

“There are no regrets. These are the kinds of defeats you can take with pride as a sportsman. The demand at Chelsea is very high and the players responded in a way that makes all of us proud.”

The Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC) has said it will focus on developing Asian boxers to make a bigger impact on the global stage as well as improve the ability of referees to judge bouts with transparency.

Asian body vows to improve standards of boxers and referees

On Sunday, Pichai Chunhavajira, president of the ASBC and Thailand Boxing Association (TBA), revealed his policies at the ASBC’s board meeting in Phuket.

He added that ASBC’s board aimed to develop Asian boxers to be able to fight American boxers who have top ranking in the world.

He said the association must hold enough tournaments for boxers even though it is difficult at the moment due to the Covid-19 situation.

Last week, the Thailand Open Boxing Tournament was held in Phuket. According to a source, foreign boxers and staff praised the organisers for the Covid prevention measures and the competition.

Pichai hoped to have this competition included in the International Boxing Association’s competition schedule in the future.

This was the ASBC board’s second meeting since Pichai was elected president.

The Thunder Castle headed into the match desperate for a win after two draws and a loss had narrowed their lead over defending champions BG Pathum to just five points with two games left to play.

Meanwhile 7th-placed Nongbua Pitchaya were looking to cause an upset on home turf at Pitchaya Stadium in Nong Bua Lamphu.

Buriram struck the first blow in the 30th minute when a long pass by Aung Thu found Supachok Sarachat, who tapped in the opener.

The visitors applied more pressure after the break, with their attacking strategy paying off when Aung Thu crossed the ball for Theerathon Bunmathan to score in the 69th minute.

Buriram sewed up the match in the 82nd minute, as Supachok Sarachat played a one-two pass with Ayub Masika to make it 3-0.

The Thunder Castle clinched the title with one game of the season left to play. The team can now enjoy their lap of honour in the final match of the season away at Suphanburi FC on May 7.

Buriram are competing for triple glory this season.

The team are also through to the semi-final of the Thai FA Cup, along with Suphanburi, Nakhon Ratchasima and Police Tero.

Meanwhile, they face Ratchaburi Mitr Phol FC in the quarter-final of the Thai League Cup on May 4.
