The Dolfin Intelligent Platform aims to offer five services, namely smart transaction, digital lending, digital insurance, wealth management and digital marketing in response to local trends and demands.

The first service launched through the app is digital payment and an e-wallet, which for the first time in Thailand, uses eKYC (electronic know-your-customer) technology for user verification with a combination of facial recognition and optical character recognition (OCR) to provide high-standard security.

The eKYC technology also transforms the lengthy offline user verification process into a fast and efficient online process.

Dolfin is also the first app to use an open-loop payment system, which supports top-up and online payment through all channels, including cash top-up, links between bank accounts, debit cards and credit cards, as well as PromptPay and over-the-counter payments. Every transaction is made more secure with the use of dynamic QR codes generated individually for one-time use in each transaction.

The app is already being used in 2,700 digital payment points nationwide in retail stores owned by the Central Group and cinemas owned by Major Cineplex Group. It can also be used to purchase goods and services via PromptPay at all 4.5 million PromptPay locations. The network of retailers also covers merchants on the Bangkok Bank and Kasikornbank’s platforms.

According to the “Thailand Fintech Outlook Report,” by Ernst and Young, a leading global market research consulting firm, Thailand’s large underbanked population with high rates of mobile usage and Internet penetration, along with its strong macroeconomic growth make it the next fintech hub in Southeast Asia.

The aim is to introduce smart healthcare products and solutions from award-winning Taiwanese companies.

Jason Hsu, director of the economic division at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Thailand, said that Taiwan’s long-established strength in information and communications technology has consolidated Taiwan’s healthcare, and inspired medical health innovation.

He said Thailand’s healthcare industry had high potential for growth and expected that the healthcare medical devices market in Thailand will grow at around 8-10 per cent per year. The Thai government also is strongly pushing Thailand as Asean Medical Hub and supporting the ageing society in Thailand.

Shao-Hui Lin, deputy executive director of Taiwan External Trade Development Council, stated that today’s Taiwanese companies represent the epitome of Taiwanese industrial advantage, because their products are selected through a rigorous selection process.

The Taiwan Excellence Award selection was launched by the Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs in 1993. More than 100 judges evaluate products in terms of R&D, design, quality, marketing, and made in Taiwan, every year. Only the top products that meet these criteria can be awarded “Taiwan Excellence”.

She said that last year, Thailand imported medical products and devices from Taiwan worth around US$8.6 billion.The council also expects the Thailand-Taiwan Smart Healthcare Seminar and Trade Meeting 2019 to create more cooperation and partnerships between Taiwanese and Thai businesses in the areas of smart healthcare and business matching to support and make Thailand a medical hub.

Cyrus Tong, associate general manager of Hiwin Technologies Corp, made a presentation on the topic “Intelligent Robotic Endoscope Surgery”. He said Hiwin’s robotic endoscope holder can improve endoscopic surgery efficiency because it provides a steady image, decreasing seasickness effect and avoiding eye fatigue, and its intuitive feet pedal is user-friendly.

The move came after Huawei posted a 26 percent year-on-year growth in smartphone shipments in the first eight months of this year, despite the restrictions it faces from the United States government.

Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei’s consumer business group, said thanks to the support of global consumers, and partners, the company has so far shipped more than 16 million units of Mate 20 series smartphones and 17 million units of P30 series smartphones.

The latest Mate 30 Pro 5G, unveiled in Munich, Germany, is powered by Huawei’s in-house Kirin 990 5G, an all-in-one, full-frequency 5G system-on-chip.

Mate 30 Pro 5G is priced from 1,199 euros ($1327), Mate 30 starts from 799 euros ($883) and the Mate 30 RS Porsche Design Edition starts from at 2,095 euros ($2315).

A powerhouse of AI computing, Atlas 900 will help make AI more readily available for different fields of scientific research and business innovation, the company said in a release on Wednesday.

“The future of computing is a massive market worth more than US$2 trillion (Bt61 billion),” said Ken Hu, Huawei’s deputy chairman. “We’ll keep investing with a strategy that focuses on four key areas. We will push the boundaries of architecture, invest in processors for all scenarios, keep clear business boundaries and build an open ecosystem.”

The industry’s approach to computing is evolving from rule-based to statistical models, which are the foundation of machine learning. Huawei estimates that in the next five years, statistical computing will become the mainstream and AI computing will account for more than 80 per cent of all computing power used around the world.

To carve out a place in this market, Huawei’s strategy will focus on four key areas:

• Architecture innovation. Last year Huawei launched the Da Vinci architecture, an innovative processor architecture designed to provide a steady and abundant supply of affordable computing power. Huawei will continue to invest in basic research.

• Investment in all-scenario processors. Huawei has a full line-up of processors: Kunpeng processors for general purpose computing, Ascend processors for AI, Kirin processors for smart devices, and Honghu processors for smart screens.

• Clear business boundaries. Huawei won’t sell its processors directly. Instead, it will provide them to its customers in the form of cloud services, and to its partners in the form of components, prioritising support for integrated solutions.

• Building an open ecosystem. In the next five years, Huawei will invest another $1.5 billion in its developer programme. The aim is to expand the programme to support 5 million more developers and enable Huawei’s worldwide partners to develop the next generation of intelligent applications and solutions.

Building on the technical strengths that Huawei has developed over the past decade, Atlas 900 combines the power of thousands of Ascend processors. The study, “How AI Can Enable a Sustainable Future”, commissioned by Microsoft, takes into account the economic and emissions impact of AI adoption in the agriculture, water, energy and transport sectors.

Artificial intelligence can be harnessed in a wide range of sectors to better manage the environment, the research said. AI-infused clean distributed energy grids, precision agriculture, sustainable supply chains, environmental monitoring and enforcement, and enhanced weather and disaster prediction and response are just some of the examples.

The research estimates that using environmental applications of AI in the four key sectors could contribute up to $5.2 trillion to the global economy in 2030, a 4.4 per cent increase relative to business as usual. In parallel, the application of AI levers could reduce worldwide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 4 per cent in 2030, an amount equal to 2.4 Gt CO2e – equivalent to the 2030 annual emissions of Australia, Canada and Japan combined.

AI could also create 38.2 million net new jobs across the globe by 2030, offering more technology based skilled occupations as part of this transition.

“Put simply, AI can enable our future systems to be more productive for the economy and for nature,” said Celine Herweijer, Global Innovation & Sustainability leader, PwC UK.

“The research shows the potential of emerging technology to directly support decoupling economic growth from greenhouse gas emissions in the near and long term,” she added.

“Many organisations around the world are increasingly using technology to help reduce and solve social and environmental problems,” said Vilaiporn Taweelappontong, consulting lead partner, PwC Thailand.

“As for Thailand, many leading companies are developing products and services that focus on reducing the environmental impact. Good examples include a seafood company using technology to capture information about catches to prevent certain kinds of fish from going extinct. Or a company that is reinventing a toilet with a self-contained waste treatment system before releasing it into sewer systems or rivers. All these efforts contribute to environmental sustainability,” Vilaiporn said.

“We believe that within the next three to five years, more entrepreneurs will be adopting AI and other emerging technologies to increase the efficiency of their organisations and also improve the quality of life,” she added.

AI shows the greatest potential to reduce GHGs in North America (-6.1%) and Europe (-4.9%) and the largest economic gains (GDP) in Europe (+5.4%) in 2030. While Latin America and Sub- Saharan Africa stand to gain the least in the analysis, their gains could be higher if more digital transformation can be realised through infrastructure investment, enabling them to even leap-frog developed countries. They also stand to gain the most from avoiding the worst impacts of climate change through mitigating emissions.

Artificial intelligence applications in energy and transport will have the largest impact on emissions reduction. AI benefits include optimisation of inputs, including reduction in energy, automation of manual and routine tasks, lowering energy emissions per unit of GDP of 6-8 per cent in 2030, relative to business as usual.

The report also finds encouraging signs for AI’s potential to improve health. More accurate and localised early warning systems for air pollution, for example, could save an estimated $2.4 billion globally in reduced healthcare costs and health impacts.

Additional environmental benefits can be achieved in water quality, air pollution, deforestation, land degradation, and biodiversity, through greater data, insights, and early warning systems – for example, using satellite data and ground-based sensors to monitor forest conditions in real time and at scale, providing an early warning system for investigation of illegal deforestation, with the potential to save 32 million hectares of forest by 2030.

The report warns that for all the potential that AI for environmental systems has, its application and uses could also exacerbate existing threats or create new risks. Broader AI risks linked to bias, security and control are all potential risks to the environment. In addition, there are substantial and wide-reaching barriers relating to these sectors that need to be overcome to realise the full potential of AI for environmental applications.

“Technology firms and industry alike will need to champion responsible technology practices, considering the social, environmental impact and long term value creation. What is clear is that the companies and countries that fare best will be those that embrace simultaneous changes,” Herweijer said.

“5G is a connectivity technology that delivers high speeds, high bandwidth, and low latency. 5G represents speed in the information society. Countries that have speed will move forward rapidly,” he said. “We hope that the speed of technological development in the West can increase, so we are looking at the licensing of all our 5G technology to help facilitate this process.”

For a one-off payment, a buyer would be given access to the company’s portfolio of 5G patents, licences, codes and technical blueprints. Based on the licensed technologies production techniques, companies can even modify the codes and develop news things themselves.

“Our aspiration is to serve humanity and achieve the pinnacle of science. Collaboration is consistent with our values, so we are willing to license our equipment to Western countries,” he said.

The founder, however, insisted that this offer to sell its technologies to others does not mean that Huawei would put a halt to the development of 5G itself. “Transferring 5G technology to other companies does not mean we will stop working on it. It just means the money we get from this transfer will allow us to make greater strides forward,” Ren reaffirmed.

There is no doubt that those great strides include its research on 6G technology, which would offer even more speed to this world. And Ren is confident about the next-generation technology in the works. “I think Huawei will also take the lead when it comes to 6G research, but our judgement is that the commercial use of 6G won’t begin for at least ten years,” He said.

The founder said that 5G technologies should not be politicized or treated as something dangerous. Countries should make their decisions about 5G to facilitate their development rather than fulfil political agendas.

“If we transfer all our technologies to the US, then they can modify the code themselves. Neither Huawei nor anyone else in the world will be able to access these technologies anymore. The US will have independent 5G. Security won’t be an issue as long as the US can properly manage its own companies. Then it will not be about us selling 5G in the US, but rather about US companies selling their own 5G in the US.

Huawei’s leading position in 5G owes as much to the cutting-edge technology as to its affordability and its ability to research, develop and roll out state-of-the-art products at the speed that’s hard to beat. The secret to its success, Ren revealed, lies in its continuous investment in research and development and the respect Huawei gives to its partners and customers worldwide since the first day of operations.

“At Huawei, cyber-security and privacy protection are always the company’s top priorities. Huawei resolutely incorporates requirements of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) into all of our business processes. We are now investing heavily to upgrade existing networks and build new networks,” Ren said. “For more than 30 years, Huawei has provided network services in more than 170 countries and regions, serving approximately three billion users. We have maintained a proven track record in security. In fact, we have never had any major security incidents, I think that record speaks for itself.”

Citing data from the Korea Communications Commission, Rep. Noh Woong-rae of the Democratic Party of Korea said as of last month there were 153,081 requests made by broadcasters for the media watchdog to address copyright infringement.

The broadcasters, which include four territorial broadcasters and four cable TV networks, asserted that online video-sharing platforms were violating local copyright laws by uploading the broadcasters’ contents without permission.

YouTube accounted for about 88 percent of copyright violation accusations, with 135,712 requests for fixing the practice made against the global video-sharing platform, the lawmaker noted.

Facebook ranked second at 11,497 accusations, more than doubling its 5,122 last year. Chinese streaming platform Youku Tudou and French video-sharing service Daily Motion faced 2,359 and 1,861 copyright violation accusations, respectively.

We’ve seen the ads and heard the hype, but just how fast is an Internet connection delivered at 1 Gbps?

To find out, I tried True Online’s GIGATEX Fiber 1 Gbps package, which boasts a download speed of 1,000 Mbps and max upload speed of 100 Mbps, and found it was indeed blazing fast.

During the test, I was able to download 735 megabytes of music files in less than two seconds, which is amazingly fast. But do you really need such a huge bandwidth at home? Apparently so: Modern families are now demanding more and more bandwidth because of their online lifestyle where streaming 4K or Full HD movies from services like Netflix, iflix and TrueVisions is the norm.

Such a huge bandwidth is necessary now because members of each modern household now stream movies from IPTV services to more than one smart TV at the same time while others play online games and download huge files, such as movies and music – all simultaneously.

During my test, I streamed a Netflix movie to a smart TV in the living room, while also using the True ID TV box to stream a HD movie from TrueVisions, used my iPad to play an online game as another family member played an online game on his smartphone. I was also streaming music from Spotify on an iMac and using the Synology DiskStation DS418j storage system to download movies from the Internet. All were carried out simultaneously without any signs of a sluggish performance. The movies streamed smoothly as did the Spotify music.

I used a notebook computer to measure the download speed by connecting it to the FTTx router supplied by True to use its Internet connection service. I got the download speed of 1,038.82 Mbps and upload speed of 119.10 Mbps. The speed test was done on a TOT speed check web page.

To get the 1Gbps speed, you must use the LAN cable only as the fastest wireless connection speed of the fastest wireless protocol in the market is 866 Mbps.

But a fast connection speed to the Internet is not all you need to ensure a smooth digital life. You also require a capable wireless router to distribute bandwidth among various gadgets in your home to ensure that all devices get enough bandwidth.

True Online has gradually tried new technologies and finally settled on the FTTx (Fiber To The X) technology it’s using now.

For those readers who might be interested, a short history: True Online started the Internet connection service with TA Easy Click in March 2003, using analog land-based phone line and 54k modem.

Then in July 2003, True launched Hi-Speed Internet with the speed of 128 Kbps, using ADSL technology. The speed was upgraded to 256 Kbps in December that year.
