To celebrate, Renaissance Hotels around the world helped guests uncover the soul of local neighbourhoods as part of the 8th annual Global Day of Discovery.

This year’s annual celebration, which took place at 160 hotels in more than 35 countries, spotlighted the Renaissance Hotel Navigator, which helps guests to discover destinations like a local by handpicking discoveries that cannot be found in a guidebook.

“We have been on a mission to continue to evolve what Renaissance Hotels offers today, and this year’s Global Day of Discovery and new ‘Discover This Way’ campaign officially marks a new era for the brand,” George Fleck, vice president of Global Brand Marketing & Management, Renaissance Hotels said in the press release.

Push Puttichai and Andy Kong, director of Brand & Marketing, Asia Pacific, Marriott International

“Today’s travellers want to feel like they’ve experienced the DNA of the neighbourhood in the destination they are visiting and make the most of their trip. With help from our This Way neighbourhood partners, we are committed to giving them something a little bit unexpected every step along their journey.”

From the brand’s surprising approach to design, to its original take on cocktails and its team of local Navigators, Renaissance Hotels aim to make guests make the most of every stay.

To celebrate the launch of the campaign in Thailand, a noted archaeologist helped guests of Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong Hotel to explore street art in Chalerm La Park, Lakshmi Shrine at Gaysorn Village, neon night markets and other local discoveries. Upon returning to the hotel, guests were welcomed by a Thai Night Festival featuring the destination’s arts and culture scene, complete with an exclusive performance by Thai celebrity actor, model and DJ Push Puttichai.

Sands China and Las Vegas Sands have collaborated with sports icon David Beckham to make over the Holiday Inn Macao Cotai Central and rebrand it as The Londoner Macao.

This new project, which will open progressively over 2020 and 2021, will join The Venetian Macao and The Parisian Macao as the Cotai Strip’s must-see properties. Exuding classic British luxury, The Londoner Macao will incorporate four world-class hotel brands – the brand-new The Londoner Hotel, alongside existing properties Conrad Macao, Cotai Central, Sheraton Grand Macao Hotel, Cotai Central and The St Regis Macao, Cotai Central.

“Sands has invested heavily here because we believe wholeheartedly that Macao’s complete arrival as one of the world’s greatest tourism and business destinations is just on the horizon. The Venetian and The Parisian have each become “must-see” destinations on the Cotai Strip and we have every confidence that The Londoner will be every bit their equal. The power of these three iconic integrated resorts working in tandem will create a combination of leisure and business tourism amenities unrivalled in Asia and Europe and on par with the success of Las Vegas,” said Robert Goldstein, Las Vegas Sands President and Chief Operating Officer.

As the global brand ambassador, Beckham will be working with the interior design team to bring his vision and style to the very exclusive top floor suites at The Londoner Hotel, representing his first foray into this design field.

The Londoner Macao will feature authentic recreations of classic British landmarks, with an exterior facade modelled on the world-famous Palace of Westminster and Houses of Parliament complete with 96-metre Elizabeth Tower and iconic clock face.

The interior decor will offer a combination of grandeur and comfort, with luxurious British design extending to the spacious Crystal Palace atrium centrepiece, restaurants, retail space and entertainment.

“London is an incredible city and one that I am proud to call my home. To be able to work so closely with the Sands team to bring the elements of London that I love to the city of Macao is a wonderful opportunity. Interior design is a real passion for me so to be involved in the design process and help shape this project is another important step in our long-standing partnership with Sands Resorts Macao. I can’t wait to welcome everyone to come and experience what we are creating here – a little bit of London in Macao,” said Beckham.

With more than 20 dining options, several new restaurant concepts boast an authentic British style gastropub by Gordon Ramsay and a new Thai restaurant called The Mews. Guests can enjoy 200 stores in The Shoppes, the 34,300-square-metre meeting and convention space, three spas and four health clubs.

New entertainment at The Londoner Macao will include an exciting whole-body, fully immersive live virtual reality experience suitable for all ages. In addition, visitors can also enjoy British-themed Streetmosphere shows such as the famous Changing of the Guards and daily retail parades featuring much-loved characters from British history, culture and literature.

The integrated resort will also feature a new 6,000-seat arena to accommodate everything from live entertainment to popular sporting events and conferences.

“The Londoner Macao, with its world-class luxury suites, new dining and spectacular entertainment, will offer guests and visitors alike another reason to visit Macao. The launch marks yet another milestone in the company’s efforts to support Macao’s development as a world centre of tourism and leisure and it also shows that Sands is fully committed to supporting Macao’s vision as a leader in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area,” said Dr Wilfred Wong, president of Sands China.

Traveloka, a leading technology company offerings online travel and lifestyle products for domestic and international destinations, has officially announced its newest flight feature innovation.

innovation. Known as “Multi-city”, it allows users to book flight tickets to several destinations in one transaction.

Users can easily add two additional destinations from and to several international destinations, such as Japan, South Korea, Australia, China, Europe, and the United Kingdom.

According to Mastercard Future of Outbound Travel in Asia Pacific (2016 to 2021) data, Thailand is expected to record annual outbound travel growth of 4.8 per cent during this period with the number of tourists expected to exceed 9.1 million people in 2021. This growth is also expected to increase, both due to business trips and leisure travel.

Caesar Indra, senior vice president of Traveloka’s Business Development, said: “We understand that outbound travel shows positive growth. This is also in line with our understanding and valuable input from our users to provide Multi-city flight features. When travelling abroad and staying in a country such as Japan, visitors often move from one city to another. For instance, they will arrive in Tokyo but move to Kyoto or Osaka and make the last city they visited their return flight location. By using Multi-city flight feature, we want to invite users to explore the world around them and remain also committed to continuing to accommodate users’ needs.”

To access the Multi-city flight feature, users should open the Traveloka application and on the main page, select the Flight icon product,

On the Search Flights page, select Multi-city; Select your 1st and 2nd flight destination, fill in passengers data and preference seat class; Click “Search” and page will show the results of a flight search that matches your flight destination

Multi-city flight feature is available in Traveloka application version 3.9 and above, both on Android & iOS devices, and can also be accessed on desktop computers.

The Multi-city flight feature is also equipped with Smart Combo service, where the service will show affordable airline ticket prices both for departure and return flight.

Low-rise, relaxing and wonderfully quiet, this five-star resort in Pattaya is ideal for all the family

THE FIRST thing that strikes me as I arrive at the Renaissance Pattaya Resort and Spa is how amazingly serene it is given it is a mere 15 minutes away from the bustling beachtown.

The beachfront low-rise resort located in the tranquil district of Na Jomtien looks good too, with two distinctive large outdoor swimming pools. The uppermost infinity pool sits above the other, which in turn sits above the beach offering descending levels of blissful enjoyment.

In business for about two years, the luxury hotel is operated by the Marriott chain. Luxuriously elegant both inside and out and offering the kind of service its five stars demand, it is also down-to-earth, making it an ideal place for all the family. There is a specially designed kid’s pool with slides and water that “jumps” and my two youngsters couldn’t get enough of it. For any traveller, nice pools are the simplest way to create a memorable experience and the Renaissance Pattaya certainly responds to that requirement.

The low-rise buildings that make up the resort are just three steps away from the road and the beach on the other side. There are plenty of open areas and getting from one building to another makes for a pleasant stroll.

Less than two hours’ drive from Bangkok, the resort offers comfortable, upscale accommodation suitable for all travellers, with deluxe rooms, family suites, pool access rooms and villas catering to every need. The Deluxe Balcony offers a partial sea view while the Deluxe Balcony Sea View is full on and boasts particularly attractive headboards adorned with backlit laser cut sea-fans and signature lamps. All rooms have separate bathtub and shower and amenities by the skincare brand Ren. The Family Suite is an ideal retreat with a separate bedroom for parents, a children’s room with bunk beds and a living area for family gatherings.

Recreational facilities include a well-equipped fitness centre and a lovely spa with six treatment rooms and a spacious relaxing area. The therapists are trained in techniques to relief stress and muscle tension and while mum and dad are having their troubles massaged away, the youngest guests can have fun at the Treasure Kids Club.

All-day dining restaurant, 609 Kitchen offers Asian and International cuisine both buffet style and at cooking stations where the chefs prepare a la minute orders. A themed dinner buffet is available on Friday while on Saturday night, the focus is on seafood.

Pebbles Bar and Grill has a distinct fishing theme and an open kitchen for guests to see the chefs in action. The restaurant uses locally grown seasonal ingredients, much of it organic, sustainable meat, fish, poultry, vegetables and grains. We particularly enjoyed the Pan-Fried Foie Gras with its delicious orange cream, candied zest, baby herb salad, vanilla and balsamic dressing. Equally as good was the Seared duck breast with pumpkin puree, pumpkin chips and a pumpkin samosa curry-infused dressing. And the kids loved the Strawberry Delight, especially as the pastry chefs came to the table to decorate the poached strawberries with strawberry jelly, strawberry parfait, strawberry mousse, balsamic, and vanilla caviar shortbread biscuit, arranging them piece by piece then finishing by topping it with chocolate.

The cocktails are prepared by an expert mixologist and include the Lady Killer made from Bombay gin, peach schnapps, Southern Comfort, rose syrup, lime juice and egg white as well as the Shop Me, an interesting mix of Abelha Cachaca, a Brazilian spirit made from distilled sugar cane, Cointreau, mango juice, pandan syrup, and lime juice.

And, above all, the Renaissance Pattaya Resort and Spa lives up to its promise –a place where simple delights become memorable moments.

Samui Regatta welcomes Synergy Samui Resort as new home

Samui Regatta welcomes Synergy Samui Resort as new home

Travel log May 20, 2019 01:00

Asia’s favourite “Tropical Island Regatta” is set to return to Samui Island’s shores from May 25 to June 1 on Chaweng Beach at a new venue, Synergy Samui Resort. Known for its high-calibre racing and tropical-chic parties, the Samui Regatta is popular with sailors from around Australasia and organizers expect to welcome competitors of more than 20 nationalities in what is also the season-ending event in the 2018/19 Asian Yachting Grand Prix.

“The regatta has a new home this year. We will be headquartered at the stunning 5-star Synergy Samui Resort which has welcomed us with open arms and will be our base throughout the event, providing us with a beachfront hub from which to operate the regatta as well as hosting a number of daily prize givings,” said OrawintaneeWattana, Regatta Director.

“The resort is just a few hundred metres along Chaweng Beach from our previous home so the popular anchorage remains unchanged, as does the stunning sailing area off the east and north coasts, and our many repeat sailors can continue to enjoy their favourite hangouts onshore.”

Speaking of their involvement in the regatta, Sukhatat Chokkanapitak, Deputy Managing Director of Synergy Samui, said, “Growing up, seeing Koh Samui develop into a world-class destination was something we always dreamed of. We believed and realized the potential of this home island of ours, and today we are here; being once again picked as one of a few places in Southeast Asia for an international regatta such as this.”

“On top of that, as third generation members of this small local business, we cannot overstate how much this event means to us. We are ecstatic to not only be a partner of this great event like many years prior, but to be trusted and given a chance to host the event for the first time. We promise to do our very best in ensuring a smooth running of the whole regatta, period. We sincerely hope that guests, participants and everyone associated with this regatta will enjoy their time on this island we love so dearly.”

Organizers are expecting a top line-up of some of the best IRC yachts and crews in the region. The ever-green Jelik (HKG), which has a new bulb configuration, intends to give the region’s top TP52 crews a run for their money including Kevin and Tom Whitcraft’s THA72 (defending champion), Team Hollywood (AUS) and Freefire (HKG), as well as WindSikher II (SIN) and Zannekin (HKG) in IRC Zero.

Returning to the regatta this year is the Premier Cruising Class with MoonBlue 2 (HKG), Bella Uno (HKG) and Lawana (THA) towing the startline.

Meanwhile in IRC 1, last year’s regatta and 2017/18 AYGP winner, Nick Burns and Fred Kinmonth’s Mandrake III (HKG), will be up against some tough competition from the likes of Fujin (AUS), Tenacious (AUS) and Over Here (THA).

Lead by Samui veteran Mick Grover, the ‘new’ MoonShadow2 will race all-comers in IRC Cruising, including a number of boats based around the Gulf of Thailand as well as the Pattaya-based SailQuest Hi Jinks (USA) which will be sailed by students from the SailQuest Sailing School, and Holding Patten (AUS), a newcomer to the regatta with a well-known face at the helm, Michael Spies.

“Early entries are looking good with a strong line-up of boats and crew from Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia and Thailand. We also have interest from sailors in China and are working with Thailand-based cruising sailors to grow a fun and competitive cruising class,” added Wattana.

Samui Regatta, however, isn’t all about the racing. The social scene is a big part of the Tropical Island Regatta’s appeal for the international crews and the boost to the local community from accommodation and on-island spend by the 500-plus participants and friends, is significant.

“While the racing is important, so are the onshore activities. Our daily social programme this year includes a number of events at Synergy Samui Resort as well as some official offsite functions nearby. The final presentation dinner format will also be new this year – we are collaborating with local resorts and businesses to host a new experience alongside Chaweng Lake. We encourage participants, families and friends to enjoy Samui and its facilities while here, and in the process contribute to the local economy,” concluded Wattana.

The 18th Samui Regatta will take place May 25 to June 1, 2019 and is organized by Regattas Asia in conjunction with the Samui Yacht Club Regatta, under the auspices of the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the Municipality of Koh Samui and the Sports Authority of Thailand.

Ehime University’s Museum is a mecca for insect lovers

THE EHIME University Museum in Matsuyama has one of the largest collections of insect specimens of any university in Japan, boasting more than 1.2 million beetles, bees, butterflies and other insects from around the world.

This is one of the finest collections held by a university established under the post-war education system. Every summer it holds an insect exhibition that mesmerises insect-loving boys and girls.

Large and small butterflies spread their colourful wings in German-style specimen boxes as if they were alive, while stink bugs smaller than grains of rice are lined up in neat rows by type. The boxes are stacked on the shelves in a specimen room filled with the acrid smell of chemicals.

According to Hiroyuki Yoshitomi, 46, an associate professor of the Entomological Laboratory at Ehime University’s Faculty of Agriculture, 70 per cent of the insects in about 4,300 specimen boxes at the museum belong to the coleopterous family. The museum has an especially world-class collection in that type of insect, which includes beetles, ladybird beetles and long-horned beetles.

“The collection is the result of about seven decades of effort by teachers and students,” Yoshitomi says.

The museum was established by Tamotsu Ishihara (1918-93), the laboratory’s first professor. He later chaired the Entomological Society of Japan.

Ishihara became an assistant staff member in Kyushu University’s laboratory after graduating from the University of Tokyo. In 1945, immediately after the end of World War II, he assumed a post at the Ehime Prefectural Agriculture and Forestry School, the predecessor of Ehime University’s Faculty of Agriculture.

There were many unknown insects at that time, as there was limited knowledge and experience in this area in the Shikoku region.

Directed by Ishihara to collect as many insect samples as possible, teachers and students went around mountains and rivers near the university with insect nets in their hands. At night, they would turn on the lights on the roof of the university building to catch insects drawn to the illumination.

They would then mount the insects or dissect them to identify what they were. Their range of activity ultimately spread throughout the entire Shikoku region, the nation and abroad.

About 10 students conduct research at the laboratory every year. They often travel to remote islands in Okinawa Prefecture or Southeast Asia, for example, to gather insects.

Yukito Tada, 22, who was a laboratory member until this spring, walked around Ishigakijima island in Okinawa Prefecture for a week during his junior year, searching for coleopterous insects of the Cantharidae family.

“Whenever we lab members get together, we talk about where we’re going next time to find insects,” Tada smiles.

Yoshitomi adds: “The collection and classification of insects are a true tradition passed down through generations at our laboratory.”

“That’s why all the lab members – teachers and students – love catching insects. We’re all mushi-ya (insect enthusiasts). Ishihara-sensei was also a mushi-ya first and foremost,” he adds with a smile.

The laboratory has organised a summer insect exhibition every year since 1997. Future mushi-ya gather crowd in to see the laboratory’s vaunted collection.

Shigetomi Matsuno, 32, who works at the Wakayama Prefectural Museum of Natural History, enter Ehime University and became an insect researcher after he was inspired by the exhibition as a high-school student in Hiroshima Prefecture.

“I was shocked by the massive collection. I could feel the researchers’ love for insects not just from the volume of the collection but also the way they carefully prepared the specimens,” he recalls.

Yoshitomi has something on his mind these days: He says an increasing number of parents tell their children not to touch the live insects at the exhibition because, for example, they are “dirty.”

“Insects are the most familiar way for children to learn about nature and the environment. The personal experience of getting close to them will bear fruit when they grow up. They won’t litter garbage and engage in other disruptive behaviour, for example,” Yoshitomi says. “Making insect specimens may seem simple and unflashy, but it plays a large role.”

IF YOU GO

>> The museum is on Ehime University’s Johoku Campus, a 20-minute streetcar ride from JR Matsuyama Station plus a five-minute walk. Only researchers can enter the specimen room, but part of the collection is on permanent exhibit. This year’s exhibition will run from August 8-12.

>> It’s open daily, except Tuesday, from 10am to 4.30pm.

>> Admission is free.
