Travellers must make sustainable choices: survey

As the world marks Earth Day today (April 22), digital travel platform Booking.com has released findings from its annual sustainable travel report. Research reveals that almost three quarters (72 per cent) of travellers believe that people need to act now and make sustainable travel choices to save the planet for future generations.

While results were relatively consistent across ages, almost three-quarters (74 per cent) of 46-55 year olds believe most strongly that this is needed, followed by millennials at 71 per cent.

The views expressed by travellers across the world are timely, considering the special report that the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issued in 2018, which asserts that the world has just over a decade to restrict global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, beyond which the risk of floods, droughts and extreme heat will significantly worsen.

Bangkok residents will no doubt remember the Grand Tower Inn on Soi Thonglor that has been around since the 1980s.

Waikiki Beachcomber gets an Outrigger makeover

After spending US$35 million on a massive makeover, the Waikiki Beachcomber by Outrigger is boasting a fresh range of 498 contemporary Hawaii-inspired guestrooms, an all-new lobby, porte cochere, renewed pool deck and two meeting areas.

“With its thoughtful design, smart technology and bespoke art, the all-new Waikiki Beachcomber by Outrigger encapsulates the past, present and future of Waikiki,” said Jeff Wagoner, Outrigger Hospitality Group’s president and chief executive officer.

“Outrigger’s legacy in Hawaii spans more than 70 years and this modernisation is the first of many more milestones in our renewed commitment to enhancing this special place for both locals and visitors alike.”

The modern, coastal decor is curated by SFA Design – a leading international luxury interior-design firm with a portfolio of high-end private residences and hospitality projects. Each room provides new in-room technology, including 55-inch flat-screen TVs with the ability to stream from mobile devices and use personal YouTube, Netflix and Hulu accounts as well as unique amenities like custom yukata-style bathrobe.

“SFA approached the Waikiki Beachcomber project by drawing inspiration from the beach, the sea, local tattoo artists and other Hawaiian elements that we were able to incorporate into the design to give it a fresh, light and authentic experience with a true sense of place,” said Rosie Feinburg, principal SFA Design.

An entirely new street presence re-interprets this iconic address as a contemporary Hawaii beach house, replete with driftwood cedar, sea glass tiles, native puka stone and basalt lava rock – all framed by a dramatically lush multi-storey green-wall.

The new lobby and public spaces are complete with the corridors, elevators and refreshed pool area with all-new furniture and an expanded infinity-style hot tub overlooking Kalakaua Avenue.

This newly furbished property unveiled its alliance of extraordinary artisans called The Beachcomber Originals, who created and contributed personal artwork featured throughout the new hotel. From an extreme-surf photographer to a Hawaiian fibre artist and an internationally acclaimed slack-key guitarist, the 12 artists collaborated with Waikiki Beachcomber by Outrigger to create a one-of-a-kind journey for guests, while sharing their personal inspiration and passion for the Hawaiian culture.

“Our goal in reinterpreting Waikiki Beachcomber by Outrigger was to evoke an authentic sense of aloha by using a fresh palette of warm, natural materials, and sun-splashed colours,” said David Rau, principal of Hart Howerton – the project’s architects from concept to completion that is renowned for its integrated approach and designing complete environments with innovative solutions.

Stepping back in time

Following a refurbishment spread over the past nine months to celebrate its seventh anniversary, 137 Pillars House in Chiang Mai is now offering 30 suites built around the original colonial teak homestead, which dates back to the late 1800’s.

In addition to being returned to its original condition and maintaining the integrity of the colonial elegance of the property when it first opened, highlights of the refurbishment include the unveiling of a new suite category, softscape and landscape improvements, renovated perimeter and garden walls, new gym equipment with digital connectivity and enhancements to the Spa. The newly launched boutique offers a range of elegant artisan jewellery, unique handmade wooden home accessories and local silk textiles, together with gifts and souvenirs.

Named as a tribute to a former occupant of the original teak homestead and a manager of the Borneo Company, the three 80-sqm David Fleming Macfie Suites provide a luxurious stay and spacious living area for a family of up to four or a couple wanting additional air-conditioned living space with an al fresco conservatory.

The King bedroom suites include a customised divan that provides comfortable seating during the day and converts to a bed at night. The adjoining spacious tropical vintage-tiled conservatories have the option of being enclosed and air conditioned or open-air and are furnished with a plush daybed that can sleep a fourth person. All suites feature large walk-in closets, en-suite bathrooms with Victorian free-standing claw foot bathtubs and separate indoor and outdoor showers, the signature 137 Pillars rattan planter’s rocking chair and cane shades for privacy.

Local artisans were employed to restore the unique poon tam walls throughout the property, using an ancient technique similar to that used in Thai temples where the colour is incorporated into the plaster.

“Our focus and purpose was to renew our suites to their original splendour, while adding thoughtful embellishments that appeal to today’s definition of luxury; namely space where we stripped out some larger pieces of furniture, meaningful technology with the addition of USB sockets, Vifa Bluetooth, sound systems and residential touches including elegant Lucite magazine racks, freeing up surfaces for guest needs and personal drinks consoles. The project was rather like polishing the diamond – with design inspired by the rich heritage and history of the property and a lush tropical landscape, with a striking palette chosen to soothe the senses, while paying attention to precision and simplicity and a sense of place,” said its general manager Anne Arrowsmith.

Rates start from Bt15,000 ($465) per night, inclusive of breakfast and are subject to service charge and government taxes.

Tourists follow ‘Game of Thrones’ trail in Northern Ireland

Tourism April 21, 2019 01:00

Belfast

Wielding a replica broadsword, Indian tourist Akshay Mannur duels with friends — re-enacting scenes from “Game of Thrones” on the Northern Ireland pilgrimage trail for devotees of the blockbuster fantasy TV show.

Since the blood and guts series began its rise to prominence in 2011, fans have started to flock to the coastal caves and ruined castles of the British province where much of the HBO television production was shot.

“Every new step is like something new, it’s more than my expectations,” 23-year-old student Mannur marvelled.

“It’s a beautiful country — Northern Ireland is just amazing.”

Multinational tour buses

Tourism Northern Ireland estimates the magical show — in its final season — drew 120,000 visitors to the province in 2016, generating £30 million (35 million euros, $39 million).

One in six visitors now comes to Northern Ireland to visit shooting locations, according to their estimates.

Along the largely coastal trail, a short drive outside the capital of Belfast, that popularity is clear to see.

A steady hum of buses and coaches are marshalled in and out of parking lots on strict schedules, and sleepy village shops throng with tourists.

“The last week, I think on Saturday past, we had a bus with 24 nationalities on it,” said tour guide Patrick Rogan at the mouth of the Cushendun Caves, the site of a pivotal plot point in the series.

“We had people from Patagonia, from New Zealand, from Japan, from Russia, from South Korea and Europe, so I think that tells its own story.”

Since 2012 his employer — the “Stones and Thrones” tour — has offered daily outings out of Belfast, manned mainly by guides who have acted as extras on the show.

Today they run at least two full buses a day, he said, competing with at least four other companies offering a similar service.

Other more bespoke tour services offer immersive experiences — axe-throwing, archery, and photo opportunities with a pair of wolves that starred in the epic series.

‘The dark history’

A popular comparison holds that “Game of Thrones” is to Northern Ireland tourism what “Lord of the Rings” has been to New Zealand.

But Northern Ireland’s very recent bloody past during the so-called ‘Troubles’ — when 3,500 were killed in 30 years of sectarian strife — makes the boom particularly welcome.

“The dark history that was here is coming out,” said Irish actor Liam Cunningham, a stalwart character in the series now feted as the most expensive to ever be filmed for the small screen.

“The place is blooming, and for us to have this show here and be part of that transition is joyful.”

‘This still has longevity’

Cunningham was speaking at the opening of a touring exhibition of costume and scenery pieces in Belfast, the same week as the new season of the series premiered.

Ranked displays of dragon skulls, intricately crafted weapons and interactive exhibits are preceded by a gallery of landscape prints, depicting the countryside shooting locations.

A caption on one image reads “Views to die horribly for”, whilst another reads “Sun, sea and savagery”, referring to the show’s reputation for bloodily killing off major characters.

They are testament to the canny local tourist board, making efforts to cement the link between their territory and the series.

“I think our association with such a global success helps to transform the image of Northern Ireland across the globe,” said John McGrillen, chief executive of Tourism Northern Ireland.

“In many ways that gives you PR that you just simply couldn’t buy.”

With the final season of “Game of Thrones” under way, the fever pitch devotion to the series may be about to end.

But with spin-off projects in the pipeline and a studio tour development due to open in Northern Ireland next year, the province still hopes for tourism revenues.

“We think this still has longevity,” said McGrillen.

Global accommodation sees slight increase

sleep April 19, 2019 11:30

By The Nation

Research by Hotel.com has revealed a 3-per-cent increase in global accommodation prices, while Thai travellers last year spent Bt1,720 for domestic accommodation – a 7-per-cent decrease from 2017.

According to the latest Hotel Price Index (HPI) from Hotels.com, there is no sign of a slowdown for the global travel industry and last year Thai travellers paid the same average price of Bt4,437 a night for international accommodation.

The growth in travel comes despite uncertainty such as Brexit, the wildfires in California, drought in South Africa and earthquakes in Japan. Travellers also showed resilience and renewed confidence in destinations touched by unrest, among them Paris, Egypt and Turkey, regions experiencing currency fluctuations; South America, and areas affected by natural disaster; and North America.

Despite the overall growth in global accommodation prices, average prices paid for domestic accommodation in Thailand have decreased, with average prices for international accommodation remaining stable.

“HPI has always given us a good barometer on the industry and an insight into global travel trends. This year we have seen growth despite a lot of political challenges and natural disasters, which indicates that the industry shows no signs of slowing down,” said Adam Jay, president of the Hotels.com.

With the HPI setting at 100 in its inaugural year, 2004, the index format allows Hotels.com to highlight year-over-year variations in actual prices paid per night by travellers without foreign exchange fluctuations distorting the picture.

Last year in Thailand, the HPI showed that in the top 10 most expensive cities, namely Nakhon Ratchasima, Bangkok, Sattahip, Krabi, Rayong, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Samui, Phuket, Hua Hin and Cha-Am, average accommodation prices ranged from Bt2,114 to Bt3,131 per night.

People paid between Bt6,054 to Bt8,418 to stay overnight in the top 10 international destinations including Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Copenhagen and Milan.

HPI also reveals many interesting results regarding average prices and popularity of destinations among Thai vacationers travelled around the world in 2018 including:

The most expensive average price paid – New York with an average price of Bt8,418 a night

The best value destination – Phnom Penh, average price of Bt1,780 a night

Most popular destination – Tokyo, with an average price of Bt4,789 a night

Highest in popularity – Istanbul, Turkey with an average price of Bt3,874 a night

Largest average price increase – Moscow, Russia, with an average price per night increase of Bt943 (Bt 4,759 a night)

Largest average price decrease – San Francisco, with an average price per night decrease of Bt2,763 (Bt7,395 a night)

In addition to the great value destinations and hidden gems found in the HPI, travellers that haven’t padded their wallets with cryptocurrency yet, can take advantage of programs like Hotels.com’s Rewards, which lets them earn free nights while the sleep.

Vistajet is proud to confirm the contination of its exclusive VistaPet program, designed for vacationers travelling with their pets.

The company has seen a 104-per-cent increase in the number of animals flown over the last two years, with one in four VistaJet Members flying regularly with their loyal companions.

Last year saw a 47-per-cent increase in the number of dogs flying on board VistaJet last year. Some 95-per-cent of American animal owners like the idea of being able to bring their pets on board, but distrust commercial airlines to safely care for their pets, making the journey stressful for both animal and human.

The VistaPet program has been designed in collaboration with experienced veterinary practitioners, groomers, dieticians and coaches to respond to the needs and challenges faced when travelling with animals. From care kits, sleep mats and balanced menus, to travel advice, global flying regulations and fear of flying courses, all VistaJet passengers can expect the same exceptional service and support.

To ensure a seamless travel experience, VistaJet’s customer service team advises passengers on the regulations that apply to their flights and destinations when travelling with pets, including details for vaccinations, microchips, certificates and permits.

VistaJet can arrange fear of flying courses for dogs, in partnership with The Dog House. The four-week course desensitises pets to what they could experience during a flight – the smell of fuel, the sounds of jet engines, cabin air pressure and the movements of air turbulence.

On board every flight, passengers will receive a VistaPet Pochette – a travel bag containing a collection of items to take care of pets during and after a flight. Bio-organic pet food from Rockster will provide pets with high-quality nutrients in the air or on arrival. The flavourful selection of Random Rewards treats, created by Michelin-starred chef Michel Roux, is a unique mixture of dog training treats.

The Kibble Pet’s Travel Care Kit includes water-free shampoos and soothing wipes for salon quality fur care – a perfect way to help pets relax on board. Rope toys by Furzu will also keep dogs entertained throughout the flight.

Following advice from clinical veterinarian, VistaJet has developed a balanced menu to keep Members’ pets hydrated and healthy, while VistaJet Cabin Hostesses will offer natural flower essences to mix with pets’ drinking water to aid relaxation during the flight.

While flying regulations require that animals are kept on leash or in a travel cage for take-off and landing, during flight pets can relax by their owner’s side on a handmade Labbvenn sleep mat. A full cabin reclean is included as standard after every pet flight.

On arrival, VistaJet has selected a collection of pet-friendly facilities and partners all around the globe – whether Members require a pet hotel in London, the best pet salon in New York or a photography session to capture moments with pets around the world. The team can also assist in finding pet walkers and trainers, or suggest unforgettable experiences including pet yoga, rafting and surfing.

South Korea residents will celebrate Buddha’s birthday with the striking Lotus Lantern Festival known as Yeondeunghoe from May 3 to 5 in downtown Seoul and along the street in front of the Jogyesa Temple.

Designated as Korea’s National Intangible Cultural Property No 122, this 1,200-year-old festival has been promulgated from generation to generation while promoting the community spirit. This year will see people pray for world peace and for the Korean Peninsula to overcome various conflicts.

On May 4, the celebration will begin with the Lantern Parade, in which participants will put a wish message on their lanterns for the continued wellbeing of families, neighbours and society. More than 2,000 foreigners will also join the parade with International Dharma Instructors.

Spread over the Ujeong Park, the Bongeunsa Temple and the Cheonggyecheon Stream, the Traditional Lantern Exhibitions meanwhile displays a wide collection of beautiful paper lanterns in different designs from May 3 to 12.

To mark its 12th anniversary, the Cheonggyecheon Lantern Exhibition is designed around the theme of “A Flower of Peace Comes Out on the Korean Peninsula” and combines people’s aspirations for peace and unification from April 27 to May 12.

During the festival, a group of 60 volunteers from 26 countries will stand by to provide guide and interpretation services for visitors and performs flash mobs at the lighting ceremony, traditional cultural events and at the Tapgol Park.
