Christmas comes to Singapore early every year with festivities getting into full swing to get everyone into the holiday mood.

The official light-up ceremony earlier this month transformed the buzzing lifestyle precinct of Orchard Road into a wonderland filled with bright lights, enchanting decorations, irresistible festive buys and endless bustle from holiday makers.

Living up to its billing as “Christmas on A Great Street”, the lights and decorations stay up until January 1, allowing visitors travelling there this week to enjoy the Disney-themed Christmas lights.

This year’s lights feature Mickey Mouse and a whole cast of popular characters and can be admired all along Orchard Road, stretching from Tanglin Mall to Scotts Road and up to Plaza Singapura. The celebrations span four distinct zones across the entire 2.88km stretch, each boasting their own thematic decorations.

Visitors to the Tanglin and Scotts Road zone will be awash in pink with Disney Princess holding court, while the Orchard Road zone sees Mickey and Friends adornments greeting festive revellers. Catch the overhead lights of lovable characters from the popular Disney’s “Frozen: and Disney Pixar’s “Toy Story” movies at the Somerset and Dhoby Ghaut zones respectively.

At Ngee Ann City, Civic Plaza, the Christmas Village is jam-packed with exciting activities, including various games, photo ops with roving Christmas characters, workshops and live performances. If you’re visiting with your little ones, be sure to take a spin on the Duplex Carousel. Also, the STB mascot, Merli, will be making its debut appearance so do look out for Merli and not miss out on this exclusive photo op.

And before you go, be sure to download the Visit Singapore Travel Guide app (available on iOS) and check out the Traveller Essentials page. This handy app will help you get your bearings, navigate Singapore’s bustling streets and gain access to a wealth of maps and city guides.

Bangkok top in Asean, second in Asia for sustainable conference destination

Tourism December 26, 2018 01:00

By   THE NATION

BANGKOK has placed second on the list of Asian destinations in the latest Global Destination Sustainability (GDS) Index.

The rating, which measured social and environmental sustainability strategies, industry supplier support, and Convention Bureau strategy and initiatives.

The results also praised Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB)’s performance as a top scorer in a comparison of convention bureaux in other Asian destinations.

The top five destinations recently received GDS-Index Awards from the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) to recognise their sustainable practices in the business tourism and events industry.

The five highest overall scores went to Gothenburg (Sweden), Copenhagen (Denmark), Reykjavik (Iceland), Oslo (Norway) and Uppsala (Sweden) respectively.

According to the index, the top five Asian cities with highest overall scores are Tokyo (Japan), Bangkok, Goyang (South Korea), Sapporo (Japan), and Dubai (United Arab Emirates) respectively.

Bangkok was ranked second in Asia and 21st in the world according to the GDS-Index. The ranking measured across four key areas, including city environmental strategy and infrastructure (14 topics), city social sustainability performance (4 topics), industry supplier support (8 topics), and convention bureau (CVB) strategy and initiatives (12 topics).

Bangkok received an overall score of 58 per cent, with the convention bureau winning 69 per cent, ably beating the global benchmark of 53 per cent.

TCEB president Chiruit Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya noted that this was the first time that Bangkok had participated in the GDS-Index, leaving the bureau delighted by the result.

The ranking showcases the country’s commitment to the international standard and the focus on environmental sustainability for meetings and the events industry, he said.

“Given the fact that international MICE (meetings, incentives, conferencing and exhibition) travellers increasingly focus on sustainability while the GDS-Index aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, this ranking certainly benefits both the MICE industry and Thailand at the same time,” said Chiruit.

The Global Destination Sustainability Index (GDS-Index) is a prize-winning grassroots Scandinavian initiative that evolved into the first-ever sustainability ranking for event destinations worldwide. The collaborative partnership between ICCA, European Cities Marketing, IMEX and MCI Group, promotes knowledge sharing, capacity building, and benchmarking.

According to ICCA and UFI, the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, Thailand ranked fifth in Asia for international conventions and seventh in Asia for international exhibitions. Both indexes spotlighted Thailand as the number one destination for conventions and exhibitions among Asean countries.

Tourism growth in the new year season will be boosted by both domestic and overseas tourists. The country would also gain from the government’s policy to promote the tourism sector, especially the free visa-on-arrival scheme, the research said.

Chiang Mai

The Tourism industry in Chiang Mai has seen some changes recently, especially in the type, behaviour and nationality of tourists, Pakkanan Winijchai, director of the Chiang Mai branch of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, said.

The number of independent tourists visiting the northern city has been rising gradually though the number of group tourists dropped slightly after a boat accident in Phuket killed 47 tourists in July, Pakkanan told The Nation in an interview last week.

The 60:40 ratio of independent and group tourists over the past few years has changed to 70:30, Pakkanan added.

She explained that the increasing number of free independent travellers included domestic tourists as well as foreigners, especially those from Europe, Australia and India.

The director, who was posted in Chiang Mai two months ago, said the city seems to have become more popular among Europeans, especially Italians and from German-speaking countries, as well as Russians.

Also, some nationalities visit Chiang Mai more often and during specific seasons. For instance, Israelis usually prefer to come during the rainy season to enjoy the sound of rain and waterfalls, as their country is more prone to droughts. But now, many of them also visit during the winter season.

Foreign tourists pose for picture at Canopy Walkway at Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden

Last year, Chiang Mai welcomed around 10 million tourists, 7 million of whom were locals and 3 million foreigners, Pakkanan said. Of the foreigners, 1 million were Chinese.

However the number of Chinese tourists dropped after the boat accident. As of November, tourist arrivals to Thailand had reached 34.43 million, up 7.53 per cent, generating an estimated Bt1.8 trillion in tourism revenue, up by 9.79 per cent, over the same period in 2017. China still led the list with the 10 millionth tourist arriving in the Kingdom last week.

Pakkanan said Chinese tourists have gradually started returning to Chiang Mai, thanks to new flights being added to the Beijing-Chiang Mai route, bringing the number of flights up to seven daily.

The TAT’s Beijing office reported that the trend of big tour groups has changed to small groups comprising six or seven travellers, she said.

“So, instead of mainly relying on Chinese tourists we have a mixed market,” the director said, suggesting that tour operators make adjustments and offer more tailor-made services to serve the changing behaviour of tourists.

The TAT has transformed its strategy by offering more digital information to facilitate the change in trends, she added. For instance, she said, individual travellers usually find information and routes by themselves through the Internet and decide where they should check in, so apart from distributing booklets, the Chiang Mai office is now also providing information via digital platforms and offering a QR code for people to download e-books.

 Pakkanan Winijchai

However, her office is facing challenges.

She said Thailand, as a popular destination, has seen an increasing number of repeat visitors, though the number of first-time visitors has dropped. The ratio of repeat tourists to first-timers stands at 70:30.

The challenge for her office now is to get more first-time visitors, she said.

But both types of visitors have pros and cons, she admitted.

Revisiting groups usually plan their own trips and do not need to rely on tour packages. They also tend to spend less, as they connect with locally based communities and eat local food. Still, she said, it’s good because they boost the income for the locals.

First-time visitors, on the other hand, tend to be big spenders as, never having visited the city before, they go to tourist attractions and dine at luxury restaurants, she said.

Pakkanan said there is an opportunity for Chiang Mai to overcome this challenge, as the city has been evolving, with more activities and new tourist attractions emerging all the time.

“Chiang Mai has become a major destination, because now there are direct flights from Europe to the city. So, we can promote it as a top destination, and design package tours for tourists to stay longer, or around four to five days, compared to the two days that people previously spent in Chiang Mai,” she said.

The TAT is also encouraging operators in Chiang Mai to design new routes and include new places following a government campaign to promote tourism in 55 secondary cities to boost local revenue. Those who spend on accommodation and food and drink at these secondary locations can claim tax deductions of up to Bt15,000.

Some Chiang Mai districts, including Chaiya Prakan, Fang and Mae Ai, have been categorised as second-tier cities.

“We are now promoting new routes combining Chiang Mai with second-tier cities such as Chaiya Prakan and Fang district as well as neighbouring provinces like Chiang Rai, Lampang and Lamphun,” Pakkanan said.

Tourists can depart from Chiang Mai, spend a night or two in the districts before heading to neighbouring provinces, she explained.

Pakkanan is also encouraging locals to visit the city during weekdays, so the city is not too overcrowded during the weekends. Those who opt for trips on working days will also receive benefits from the TAT and its partners.

Famous for its first-class train service, Orient Express is embarking on a new journey with the opening of its first Oriental Express Mahanakhon Bangkok, which is slated for completion in the last quarter of next year.

AccorHotels and SNCF Group signed a strategic partnership in 2017 to develop Orient Express hotels after AccorHotels acquired a 50-per-cent stake in the share capital of the brand. SNCF retains ownership of the seven original Orient Express carriages, which have been restored and now provide a new and exceptional setting for the organisation of events in collaboration with Potel & Chabot. Both groups are committed to preserving, promoting and sharing the heritage connected with the legendary brand.

“Orient Express has always acted as a passport between worlds and a trip on these legendary trains was historical, touristic and cinematic with an inimitable experience. This linking of Occident and Orient, of history and modernity, and of curiosity and cultures will be a hallmark of the new Orient Express Hotels and we are excited to bring back this spirit of luxurious adventure to today’s modern travellers,” said Sebastien Bazin, chairman and chief executive of AccorHotels.

Situated in Bangkok’s brand-new King Power Mahanakhon Building, the hotel will house 154 rooms including nine suites and two penthouses, as well as an entire floor devoted to wellness including an outdoor pool and Jacuzzi plus signature Orient Express Spa by Guerlain. Guests will have access to the building’s spectacular rooftop observation deck and rooftop bar, all rooms will provide stunning views over the City of Angels.

“The launch of the world’s first Orient Express Hotel at King Power Mahanakhon truly completes our vision of creating an extraordinary landmark that celebrates the city and adds a new milestone to Thailand and the world’s hospitality industry, while further elevating Thailand to a truly world-class destination,” said Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, chief executive officer of King Power Group.

“King Power Mahanakhon always wants its projects to be different, impressive and distinct, exuding excellence in every dimension. We look forward to welcoming visitors from all over the world, and placing Thailand’s tourism scene on the global stage through a landmark that combines exceptional hospitality, award-winning cuisine, a unique shopping experience and Bangkok’s spectacular views.”

The original Orient Express trains were famous for the highest standards of fine craftsmanship, the newest innovations and the most exquisite dining and so Orient Express Mahanakhon Bangkok will bring together the best names in these fields to reinterpret the art of luxury travel.

Esteemed designer Tristan Auer has been tasked with reimagining the Art Deco styling and plant motifs of the original Orient Express carriages into a modern skyscraper in the heart of a bustling metropolis. The sumptuous bedrooms and exquisite bathrooms will bring new levels of style and luxury to Bangkok.

“We are proud to bring the multicultural heritage, mystery and exoticism of the legendary Orient Express brand to Bangkok” said Michael Issenberg, chairman and chief executive officer, AccorHotels Asia Pacific

“Orient Express redefined rail travel in the 1900s, introducing the first sleeper cars linking West to East and delivering unprecedented levels of comfort and dining. We look forward to bringing this same luxury and refinement to the new incarnation of Orient Express hotels.”

Two signature restaurants will include Mott 32 on level 2 and Mahanathi by David Thompson on level 5 of the hotel.

Mott 32 will also bring an exceptional modern Cantonese dining experience to the city with a contemporary restaurant and cocktail bar in Orient Express Mahanakhon Bangkok. Mott 32 is named after 32 Mott Street in New York – the site of NYC’s first Chinese convenience store, which opened in 1851.

David Thompson is known worldwide for his skills and expertise in Thai cuisine and culinary art. Thompson has established award-winning restaurants across the world, Nahm in London and Bangkok, Long Chim in Asia and Australia and Aaharn in Hong Kong.

For more than 135 years, Orient Express has inspired authors, artists and film directors, with famous guests including Josephine Baker, Albert Einstein, Coco Chanel, Graham Greene, Ernest Hemingway, Marlene Dietrich and Mata Hari.

Agatha Christie made the trains even more famous with her eponymous novel “Murder on the Orient Express”, while Albert Hitchcock’s “The Lady Vanishes” and James Bond’s “From Russia with Love” further immortalised the Orient Express name in the popular imagination.

Another hallmark of the Orient Express has always been the excellence of its staff and the prestige of the uniform. These signatures will also be present in all Orient Express Hotels, setting the highest standards in impeccable service for the industry.
