UN tourism agency keen on ‘Thai Riviera’ plan, minister says

Breaking News June 07, 2018 11:22

The United Nations World Tourism Organisation has acknowledged the potential in Thailand promoting its own “Riviera” and will support it, Tourism and Sports Minister Weerasak Kowsurat said on Thursday.

Weerasak said he took UNWTO secretary general Zurab Pololikashvili on a tour of the coastal provinces that would be involved and he expressed interest in the scheme.

The idea is to develop a 220-kilometre stretch of the Gulf coast with international-standard tourist attractions and build double-track railway linking them.

New marine tourism routes to the area would be established. Hua Hin Airport has opened to international flights as part of the project.

Weerasak said the UNWTO would help out by holding a tourism investment forum in one of the Gulf provinces this year, during which member-nations can view the area.

Pololikashvili asked about city planning in the coastal provinces, areas that are designated by law for commercial development, areas that would be secure during monsoon storms, and transportation infrastructure plans.

The information will be passed on to member-nations invited to invest in the Thai Riviera, Weerasak said.

THAILAND has been rated the top destination for the meetings, incentive travel, convention and exhibition (MICE) sector, according to a survey released by the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB).

According to the survey, Thailand secured the top spot with the so-called delight factors in hospitality, value for money, good variety of international and local cuisine and MICE activities.

The poll was conducted by Custom Asia Co Ltd to survey and sought responses about the preferred destinations for business travel and MICE trips.

The TCEB also announced that Thailand was chosen as the host country for international conferences organised by the world’s leading associations in events and travel incentive industries, UFI and SITE. These events, which will take place in Bangkok next year, will be emphasise Thailand’s potential and its position as the leading MICE destination in the region.

TCEB president Chiruit Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya said that TCEB is tasked with promoting and developing business events in Thailand. The bureau has been working toward establishing Thailand as premier MICE destination and elevating the country to be the “Top of Mind Destination for MICE”.

In order to identify the strengthens of Thailand to better attract the overseas MICE markets, the TCEB needs to study key factors that influence the destination choice, evaluate Thailand MICE destination image, and measure the competitiveness of Thailand when compared to other MICE destinations.

Recently, TCEB had assigned the Custom Asia Co Ltd, a member of Global Market Research Association which has a network in 39 countries, to conduct a market survey on Thailand’s brand image as a destination for MICE. The research, which took place in 20 countries, focused on global MICE professionals and their outlooks on Thailand’s MICE brand. Some 40 MICE professionals participated in the online bulletin board, and 649 took part in the online survey. These survey participants comprised four segments: MICE Players; business travellers; MICE visitors, associations and organisations related to MICE.

Thailand is ranked top as a preferred destination. More than 85 per cent of the survey respondents who have travelled to Thailand on business/MICE trips would like to revisit for their business/MICE trips in the future.

Meanwhile, the participants see that when compared Thailand against the other MICE destinations, Thailand’s delights factors are great hospitality, value for money, and a good variety of international and local cuisine. It is followed by Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong Australia, United State, Germany, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and China.

In addition, the result shows that Thailand secured the first rank as the choice for MICE destination.

According to the survey, the country features strengths in three areas, which are: basic requirements: connection hub, international standard accommodation, and great facilities; delight factors: great hospitality and delicious local cuisine; and unique experience: culture and heritage and the abundance of nature. Furthermore, the destination also offers a wide variety of activities beyond MICE, good accessibility to/from destination, endless business opportunities, and the uniqueness”, he said.

Custom Asia Co Ltd’s chief executive officer Sukit Tanskul said that the survey also shows interesting results about main criteria in selecting MICE destinations. These criteria can be considered as important factors which MICE destination needs. They are: value for money, international standard accommodation, good accessibility, English proficiency, and compliance with corporate governance.

When analysing the criteria by segments, the survey shows that MICE Players look for ease of travel within the country. MICE visitors look for hospitality and value for money, Business travellers look for good destination image and reputation, while MICE associations also look for within the budget accommodation choices, English proficiency, and unique destination.

Besides the survey, key events that affirm the position of Thailand as the world-class MICE destination include a number of leading international conventions that take place in the country. Next year, Thailand will be a host country for The 86th UFI Global Congress 2019, which is scheduled for November 6-9 at the Iconsiam

The event is expected to attract 450 professionals. In addition, in January the country will welcome SITE Global Conference 2019. The Society for Incentive Travel Excellence or SITE comprises more than 2,100 members and 29 local chapters in 84 countries.

Thailand is the first country in the Southeast Asia region that won the right to host the SITE Global Conference. More than 400 of attendees are expected to gather at this event, which will take place from January 11-13 January at the Shangri-La Hotel, Bangkok.

Getting rid of single-use plastic

Akaryn Hotel Group has underlined its commitment to preserving the environment with the setting up of the charity organisation Pure Blue Foundation to support multi-faceted marine projects including coral reef restoration and marine turtle conservation.

The foundation has also made concerted efforts to engage with local communities, particularly schools, where the next generation can learn about the importance of protecting fragile marine eco-systems.

Concerned about the amount of plastic waste that finds its way into the ocean, the charity is now focusing its efforts on eliminating single-use plastic at the origin through the introduction of re-usable stainless steel water bottles.

“As part of our ongoing support for the Pure Blue Foundation, all Aleenta and akyra hotels aim to become single-use plastic free by 2020,” says Anchalika Kijkanakorn, the group’s founder and managing director. “The akyra TAS Sukhumvit Bangkok Hotel is taking the lead on this initiative by becoming the first new hotel in Asia to launch without single-use plastic in its rooms or food and beverage outlets. This will soon be followed by akyra Manor Chiang Mai, which is on track to be free of single-use plastic by August 2018.”

Upon check-in, guests at akyra TAS Sukhumvit Bangkok will be offered the possibility to donate to the foundation in order to get a stylish Pure Blue Foundation branded stainless steel water bottle that can be refilled throughout their stay. Self-service drinking water will be conveniently dispensed on every floor to make refills easy, and guests will be advised to take their bottles with them on excursions around the city.

“We are also encouraging our partners and suppliers to adopt a more environmentally sensitive approach to business, and our cooperation with The Lab Fitness Studio is the first step in extending the zero plastic policy into the wider Bangkok community,” she adds.

The Lab’s founder and managing director, Richard Cohen, decided to become the first company to collaborate with Pure Blue Foundation’s plastic-free initiative. The hotel offers 100 reusable stainless steel bottles to the Lab to be used at the gyms.

“With our newly renovated and upgraded gyms in Phrom Phong and Silom, together with our 100-per-cent no single-use plastic policy, we will continue leading the industry by contributing to a fitter, healthier, eco-friendlier Bangkok,” Cohen says.

In addition to stainless steel water bottles, other eco-friendly features implemented at akyra TAS Sukhumvit Bangkok include essential oil-based bathroom amenities presented in locally manufactured celadon ceramic containers, as well as toothbrushes and combs made from corn starch. Biodegradable garbage bags will be placed in the rooms and the plastic foil used for room amenities and in-room dining will be replaced by pinto boxes and glass jars.

The hotel group also tries to apply this concept in various areas, leading to opportunities such as supplying the properties’ retail shop with an innovative brand of swimming shorts, Riz. This brand from UK offers a more soulful, sartorial, and sustainable approach to men’s swimwear, with swimming shorts made from recycled plastic bottles, diverting further waste from entering the sea.

A stay at the new Shinta Mani Angkor is just like visiting another world

ONCE JUST the stepping-off point for visits to Angkor Wat, Siem Reap has today become a destination in its own right, with luxury hotels and trendy restaurants popping up all over town.

The newest kid on the block is the Shinta Mani Angkor – Bensley Collection and it’s already winning hearts with its chic modern design, first-class hospitality and great cuisine. The hotel is the latest addition to Shinta Mani Hotel’s portfolio in collaboration with acclaimed architect Bill Bensley.

Built on land that once housed a handicraft market, it boasts 10 opulent Khmer-style villas and the five-star Bensley Butler service to ensure the complete holiday experience.

I fly in from Bangkok on a rainy day but my spirits are immediately lifted by the Bensley all-inclusive experience package that includes a fast track immigration service.

While my fellow travellers remain stuck in the queue, I am greeted as a VIP guest by a polite butler who offers me cold drinking water and a cold towel as well as a complimentary pocket Wi-Fi device for social network connectivity.

It’s just a 10-minute drive from the airport to the resort in the heart of the town and I soon find myself relaxing with a herbal drink in the elegant lobby while my butler checks me in.

Bangkok-based Bensley, who is well known for his luxury resort design, has adopted the unique architecture of King Jayavarman VII for this castle-like resort.

Surrounded by shady tropical landscaped gardens, the white arch-shaped entrance welcomes guests with a glittering glass facade and over-size three-dimensional murals carved to portray the rippling folds of King Jayavarman’s robe.

Spread over two floors, each villa occupies 156 square metres and offers privacy and the ultimate in extravagance, complete with a lush tropical garden that literally brings the outside in.

I spend two nights in the Villa 3, which is entered by an old-fashioned wooden door that has me confused for a while until I realise it opens and locks the traditional way rather than with a high-tech key card.

The terrace is furnished with a lounge sofa set that leads to a private nine-metre lap pool and a kitchenette complete with Smeg coffee machine, tea making facility, glassware and local snacks.

Perfect for families and honeymoon couples, the rooftop living space on the upper floor is adorned with a sofa bed and bar stools.

The villa itself is divided into two pavilions. The monochromatic master bedroom is graced with a collection of gold home furnishings and white low-relief murals of King Jayavarman VII. The king-size bed is made up with luxurious linens and fluffy pillows, also designed by Bensley to ensure deep sleep. There’s also an en-suite marble washroom with a separate toilet, a washbasin and all the amenities you could possible need.

The compact living space with direct access to the pool is where I choose to eat my complimentary in-room breakfast while watching a Thai drama series on a smart TV with satellite channels.

Reached by a marble walkway through the tropical garden is the bathroom with its floor-to-ceiling glass walls. Flower petals float in the outdoor bathtub that shares space with the separate shower.

While the indoor zone has a long counter, a pair of washbasins and a walk-in closet with a towering mirror packed with bathrobes, slippers, safe box, hairdryer, scales, umbrellas and torches.

During the day, guests can take advantage of recreational facilities like standard-size swimming pools, pool bars, restaurants and the Shinta Mani Spa by Khmer Tonics at sister properties Shinta Mani Shack and Shinta Mani Angkor.

The next morning, I am enrolled a two-hour Khmer cooking class created by the Kroya Restaurant and at 10am a chef and my butler take me to explore the colourful fresh market and learn about local ingredients.

Back at the hotel, the chef and his team demonstrate how to make such popular Cambodian dishes as Fish Amok, Beef Soup, Green Mango Salad with poached prawns and Sweet and Snowy Rice Pudding.

With easy access to archaeological sites and shopping venues, the hotel provides Remork (local tuk tuk) transportation within Siem Reap around the clock – just ask the butler – as well as sightseeing tours.

In town, there’s entertainment of Phrae, the Cambodian Circus, which delights travellers with a fantastic performance by its troupe of young local talent in acrobatics, dance, circus and visual arts telling Cambodian folklore.

Those seeking gifts for the folks back home will find handcrafted products, jewellery and artworks at the Shinta Mani boutique. Proceeds from sales are donated to the Shinta Mani Foundation to support education, healthcare programmes and small start-up businesses for children and villagers in Siem Reap’s remote areas.

Hong Kong’s former police headquarters compound has been transformed into a worldclass heritage and arts hub as part of the largest heritage revitalisation project on the island.

Featuring 16 historic buildings and outdoor spaces on a 13,600squaremetre site in the heart of the business district, Tai Kwun is home to three declared monuments, the former Central Police Station, Central Magistracy and Victoria Prison.

The local colloquial name used by police officers and the public alike to refer to the city’s Central Police Station, bear witness to more than 170 years of Hong Kong history. This collaboration between the Hong Kong Jockey Club and the Hong Kong Government involved the conversation of the heritage buildings and the addition of two new buildings – the gallery and art space JC Contemporary and the JC Cube auditorium for performing arts, film screenings and educational events.

“Tai Kwun reflects the club at its very best. It commits to the highest standards, undeterred by the complexity of the tasks it undertakes and above all motivated by the desire to act, as in everything it does, for the betterment of our society,” said Dr Simon Ip, chairman of the Hong Kong Jockey Club.

The Club spent 10 years pursuing a heritageled plan of conserving the historic site. Buildingbybuilding, roombyroom, it has been returned to its former glory with the closest attention to detail.

“After more than a decade of dedication, patience and perseverance on the part of the Club and the many experts and workers involved, the people can now rejoice at the grandeur of the gift they received,” said Hong Kong chief executive Carrie Lam, who championed the project a decade ago.

Much of Saimyoji Temple in Japan was burned to the ground centuries ago, but its wall paintings are as vivid as ever

VISITORS MIGHT feel as if they are looking at a 3D mandala upon entering Saimyoji Temple in Kora, Shiga Prefecture. The first floor of a three-storey pagoda at the temple depicts the world of Buddha through richly coloured murals and paintings of Bosatsu (Bodhisattva) and other Buddhist figures.

The pagoda, a designated national treasure, was constructed during the Kamakura Period (late 12th century to early 14th century).

I recently visited the temple to take in the world of Buddha and see the pagoda for myself before it was closed earlier this month.

The interior of the first level of the pagoda at Saimyoji Temple /Yomiuri/Japan News

Saimyoji was founded in 834 and is one of the three Koto Sanzan temples east of Lake Biwa. The other two, Kongorinji in Aisho and Hyakusaiji in Higashiomi, are nearby. All three are associated with the Tendai sect of Buddhism.

According to historical documents, the temple prospered during the medieval period, when it had 17 main buildings and 300 residences for monks.

Upon entering the pagoda, I was overwhelmed by the dazzling display of colours.

A massive Dainichi Nyorai Buddha statue is seated on a shumidan dais in the centre of the space, with the dais’ four corner pillars each decorated with eight images of Bosatsu.

The main hall houses a small shrine containing the temple’s principal image, which is usually hidden from the public, and several other Buddhist statues. Yomiuri/Japan News

The ceiling is grid-patterned and adorned with images of flowers painted with gold, vermilion and other bright hues.

The four walls also display eight murals depicting important scenes from the Hokekyo, or Lotus Sutra, which is important to the Tendai sect. The wooden doors and beams running between the pillars are also decorated with paintings of a bird inhabiting the Pure Land and an imaginary flower called a hosoge, among other images.

The paintings, however, have peeled considerably, which was perhaps inevitable given they are 700 years old. I understand why they are designated as an important cultural property and are recognised separately from the pagoda building itself.

The main hall, left, and threestorey pagoda survived an attack by the warlord Oda Nobunaga. Yomiuri/Japan News

Saimyoji faced its greatest crisis in 1571, when the mighty warlord Oda Nobunaga dispatched an army to the temple after destroying Hieizan Enryakuji, the headquarters of the Tendai sect in present-day Otsu.

All of the temple buildings burned to ashes except for the pagoda, the main hall and the Nitenmon gate. The main hall was built during the Kamakura Period, while the gate was constructed during the Muromachi Period (early 14th century to late 16th century).

Today, the main hall is designated as a national treasure and the gate as an important cultural property.

Legend has it that the temple priests themselves burned a large amount of firewood to create the impression that the entire temple grounds were ablaze, discouraging Nobunaga’s army from continuing its attack.

“It’s a miracle the vivid colours of the murals remain even after enduring the flames of war,” said Eisho Nakano, 60, the temple’s chief priest.

Many in Oda’s army were likely in awe of Buddha and didn’t want to burn down the elegant buildings and paintings, Nakano said. “I believe they pretended to be deceived and withdrew before attacking.” Nakano’s explanation made sense as I observed these great treasures for myself. The army really must have been reluctant to destroy them.

Thanks to this miracle and good fortune, people today can appreciate the murals depicting the world of Buddha, which have been objects of faith since medieval times.

Buddhist statues enshrined in the main hall’s rear area continue to be accessible to the public until September 30.

Thai Airways to end Bkk-Samui flights

Tourism June 02, 2018 20:20

Thai Airways is scrapping its Bangkok-Samui flights from September this year.

The airline has flown Bangkok to Samui International Airport, return, twice a day in a Boeing 737 carrying up to 149 passengers after negotiating a contract with Bangkok Airways in 2008.

The private airport on Koh Samui was built by Bangkok Airways in 1989 and has been managed by that airline ever since.

When THAI began flying the route, the national airline said it would be convenient for travellers flying through Bangkok on Thai Airways to transfer to a TG flight to the island through the one airline.

It was also considered a breakthrough at the time, ending a monopoly for the Bangkok-Samui flights sector. Bangkok Airways dominates the route, offering around 19 flights daily each way. Thai Airways feels it is justified in cancelling the service this September following the signing of a codeshare agreement with Bangkok Airways last year.

The airline can ticket its European or Asian passengers through to Samui on any of the daily Bangkok Airways flights at agreed fares that are competitive for TG to resell.

The resulting monopoly for Bangkok Airways means that flights could cost up to more than double that of routes of a similar distance around the region.

Samui Island’s airport was developed as the country’s first privately owned airport but has faced constant criticism from hoteliers on the island who claimed Bangkok Airways made it difficult for competitors to serve the island.

At one point the government threatened to build a second airport on the island but land appropriation costs were too high. However, the tactic did result in THAI gaining landing rights for two flights per day.

According to Airlineroute’s timetable information, Thai Airways will on September 2 end its TG281 service departing Bangkok at 7.45am, and TG287 departing Bangkok at 3.30pm.
