Covid-19 has become a hot topic in the entertainment industry and some stars have gone for virus tests after well-known host Techin Ploypetch, or DJ Matoom, posted a video clip on Instagram saying he was infected with the coronavirus and apologised to everyone affected. He also posted pictures of himself in hospital.

Friends in the entertainment industry, as well as Fanclub, commented to encourage him to overcome and recover from the virus.

DJ Matoom first met an infected but then-asymptomatic friend on January 9. It was later, on January 19, that friends called and informed him that the man was infected. Matoom said he went to hospital immediately to check. After a test showed that he, too, was infected, he reported the results to everyone.

Celebrities and actors including well-known actress Nakorn Silachai, who worked with him, and his family have now gone for Covid-19 tests.

Previously, in the first outbreak early last year, Matthew “Deane” Chanthavani also made a video announcing his infection, picked up at a boxing stadium, which was responsible for a cluster of cases.

Samut Sakhon readies to reopen popular Central Prawn Market by Jan-end

By THE NATION

Samut Sakhon’s Central Prawn Market in Muang district is ready to reopen on either January 26 or 27 after a major clean-up scheduled on January 25, the province’s deputy governor Theerapat Katchamat announced.

The market had been ordered shut since December 20 after more than 500 confirmed cases of Covid-19 were traced back there.

“All infected persons from the market had been sent to the Samut Sakhon field hospital for treatment and 14-day quarantine,” Theerapat said. “They have now all been released after tests showed they are free of the virus.”

Theerapat said that on Friday (January 22) the province would perform another test on 1,200 people who reside near the market and had previously tested negative for Covid-19 to make sure that the market is a completely virus-free zone.

“The reopening of the market is important to the province’s economy, as Samut Sakhon hosts one of Thailand’s biggest seafood markets,” he added.

Meanwhile, market manager Damrong Mansin said he has instructed all merchants to strictly follow Covid-19 preventive measures when the market reopens, including screening all workers with thermo scanners and wearing sanitary face masks at all times.

On Wednesday Samut Sakhon reported 92 new virus cases, which raised the province’s accumulated cases to 4,921 patients – 1,045 Thais and 3,876 migrants. Some 331 are presently in hospital, 1,332 are being monitored in quarantine, 3,257 have either been cured or have tested negative after quarantine, and one person has died.

Sixteen Cambodian nationals were arrested by two teams of patrolling police officers after entering the country via Sa Kaeo province without any documentation, Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Division police announced on Wednesday.

One of the teams arrested seven Cambodians on Highway No 359 in Sa Kaeo’s Watthana Nakhon district. They were in a pickup truck driven by Ong-art Todtasee, aged 44, a local of Maha Sarakham province. Ong-art reportedly confessed that he was hired by a company in Pattaya to transport the Cambodian workers to Sa Kaeo. Each was to pay Bt600 for being helped across the border to Cambodia.

They were taken to Muang Sa Kaeo police station, where Ong-art was charged with aiding illegal migrants and the seven charged with entering the country without proper documentation.

The other team of police discovered nine Cambodians stranded in a forest in Khao Chakan district. An initial investigation revealed they were abandoned after their employer evaded a crackdown on illegal migrants. The nine were also taken to Muang Sa Kaeo police station and charged with entering the country illegally.

Chonburi authorities have banned travel to or from Koh Si Chang after a Covid-19 outbreak in adjoining coastal districts.

The lockdown is effective immediately until the situation is resolved, said Chonburi governor Phakthorn Thianchai, in his capacity as chairman of the provincial Communicable Diseases Committee.

The move comes after the Covid-19 outbreak in neighbouring coastal districts including Sri Racha has continued to spread. To stop transmission of the virus, Koh Si Chang has been completely locked down.

The Chonburi marine department will impose measures for boat operators while the sheriff of Koh Si Chang has been tasked with policing the lockdown.

Samut Sakhon governor Verasak Vichitsangsri is being monitored hourly after being hit by a secondary infection during his recovery from Covid-19, said Dr Prasit Watanapa, dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Siriraj Hospital.

Dr Prasit revealed on Wednesday that bacteria resistant to treatment was detected in the governor’s lungs and Verasak’s brain function is affected. A new antibiotic has been administered and medics will monitor for 72 hours to see if his body responds to the drug, the doctor added.

Verasak’s Covid-19 infection has subsided, but the virus has affected lung function while the bacterial infection has destroyed lung tissue. The governor remains on a ventilator more than a month after being confirmed infected with Covid-19 on December 17.

Verasak, 58, was treated with the antiviral drug Favipiravir.

“All we have to do is administer antibiotics and remove mucus as much as possible to reduce infection in the body. As for the work of the brain, there has been an effect because the governor is older and has underlying cerebrovascular disease. The medical team are doing their best, “Dr Prasit said.
