A strong high-pressure area from China covers upper Thailand, the Thailand Meteorological Department said on Sunday.

Cool to cold weather with strong winds are likely in upper Thailand.

The weather on mountaintops will be cold to very cold with isolated frost. People in upper Thailand should watch their health due to the variable weather, the department said.

The strong northeast monsoon prevails over the Gulf of Thailand and the South, triggering strong wind waves in the Gulf of Thailand, 2-4 metres high in the lower Gulf of Thailand. People on the Southeast coast should beware of waves breaking on the shore. All ships should proceed with caution and small boats should keep ashore until January 13, the department said.

Another high-pressure area from China will extend to cover upper Thailand from January 11-13. Cool to cold weather with strong winds are likely in upper Thailand and a 2-4 degrees Celsius drop in temperature.

The weather forecast for different regions:

Negative Covid-19 test certificate mandatory for travellers to England

NationalJan 09. 2021

Passengers arriving from all international destinations will be required to present a negative Covid-19 test result before departing for England to help protect against the new strain of coronavirus.

The British Embassy in Bangkok on Friday said

UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps had announced that from next week inbound passengers arriving by boat, plane or train would have to take a test no more than 72 hours before departing the country they are in, to help protect against the new strains of coronavirus such as those seen in Denmark and South Africa.

The decisive action is in response to the changes seen in the transmission of the virus both domestically and across the globe, the embassy said.

Pre-departure testing will protect travel and will provide an additional layer of safety from imported cases of coronavirus on top of the mandatory 10-day quarantine for arrivals, helping identify people who may currently be infectious and preventing them from travelling to England.

A negative pre-departure test reduces the risk of someone travelling whilst infectious, acting as another safeguard to prevent imported infections, the embassy said. Passengers arriving from countries not on the government’s travel corridor list must self-isolate for 10 days regardless of their pre-departure test result to provide further robust protection from those travelling from high-risk countries.

Prior to departure, passengers will need to present proof of a negative Covid-19 test result to carriers, as well as their Passenger Locator Form. The UK Border Force will conduct spot checks on arrival in England to ensure that passengers are fully compliant.

The move further bolsters existing protective measures which helped to safely enable international travel last year, with self-isolation for new arrivals and travel corridors remaining critical in reducing the risk of imported cases from high-risk countries.

Thai tyre exports on slippery ground as US mulls anti-dumping duty

Thai exports of tyres to its biggest market could take a big hit if the United States decides to impose anti-dumping duty.

Such a move would not only affect domestic tyre manufacturers but also Chinese firms who had moved their manufacturing bases to Thailand after China had been ordered to pay the same duty by the US since 2015, said Chaiyasit Samritwanitcha, president of Rubber Product Industry Group at the Federation of Thai Industries.

The US Department of Commerce on December 29 announced that four countries — Thailand, South Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam — were under scrutiny for anti-dumping duty. The department’s final hearing will be concluded on May 13.

“The United States is our biggest automotive tyres market, and if they rule that we have to pay the anti-dumping duty they could switch to importing from our competitors, like Indonesia and India who are not yet subject to the anti-dumping duty,” he said. “The impact from the US decision could be either short or long-term, depending on their following moves. Domestic tyre manufacturers may have to look for alternative markets to make up for the loss of US orders.”

This also means that new manufacturers from China probably would no longer view Thailand as their investment destination and could move their manufacturing bases to either Indonesia or India instead,” he added.

Meanwhile, Kirati Ratchano, director-general of the Department of Foreign Trade, said that according to data from the US Department of Commerce, Thai manufacturers are subject to anti-dumping duty at 13.25 to 22.21 per cent, which is still lower than the other three countries currently under investigation. “Vietnam is reportedly subject to 22.3 per cent anti-dumping duty, while South Korea could be levied from 14 to 38 per cent and Taiwan from 52 to 98 per cent,” he said.

The Ministry of Commerce and Customs Department reported that in the first 11 months of 2020, Thailand exported vehicle tyres valued at Bt154.5 billion. Thailand’s five largest markets are: the United States (Bt77.9 billion export value), Australia (Bt6.58 billion), Japan (Bt6.03 billion), South Korea (Bt5.47 billion) and Malaysia (Bt5.01 billion).

How to dispose of used sanitary face masks during Covid-19

NationalJan 09. 2021

By THE NATION

The Pollution Control Department has outlined steps for proper disposal of non-reusable sanitary face masks. The guidelines come in the wake of soaring domestic usage due to the new wave of Covid-19 in Thailand since December.

“Face masks used by Covid-19 patients, their close contacts and medical professionals treating them are considered infectious waste and must be disposed of under regulations announced by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment,” said Attapol Charoenchansa, department director-general.

The protocol that hospitals and quarantine facilities must follow in disposal of infectious waste includes putting them in double layer of red bags that are opaque, water and chemical resistant, with a clear label identifying it as “infectious waste”. Some disinfectant or bleach must be poured on the waste before tying the bag tightly with rope and then stored at a separate location from general waste until local officials come and pick them up.

“As for face masks used by the general public in their daily life, they should be cut or torn apart before being thrown away to prevent reuse.

“Used face masks should be put in a separate garbage bag from general waste and be dumped at designated points for used face masks in your community. Most importantly, avoid having used face masks in your home for more than seven days.”

For people who are in self-quarantine at home to monitor their symptoms after possible exposure to the virus, Attapol suggested they put used face masks in a double layer of garbage bags, then tie the bag tightly with a string and label the bag “Used Sanitary Face masks”, before dumping it at designated points for used face mask in your community.

“Office or business venues should follow the same protocol as self-quarantine persons, but they should pour some disinfectant or bleach over used face masks before tying the bag with a string,” he added.

Chiang Mai International Airport has confirmed that one of its staffers had contracted Covid-19.

The airport urged those who had passed through the airport on January 3 or before to get themselves tested and go to hospitals in case they have suspected conditions.

Amornrat Chumsai na Ayutthaya, the airport director, said that his organisation had been informed about a case of infection of a staff working in a tourist help centre in the airport. This person was the 58th patient in Chiang Mai from the latest outbreak.

In response to this information, Amoenrat ordered his subordinates to check CCTV cameras, and the result of this operation showed that the last day the infected official had worked at the airport was on January 3.

However, this official had worn a face mask all the time, and did not touch passengers or other officials. Moreover, the local health office has already contacted all persons at risk.

Amornrat suggested people who had visited the airport on January 3 and before to check themselves and enter hospitals if they had suspected Covid-19 symptoms.

He added the airport would clean the red area – terminal number 6 – from January 8 to 11.

Swine farmers groan under weight of rising costs

NationalJan 09. 2021

By THE NATION

Farmers raising swine are burdened by increasing cost, compounded by recent disease outbreaks, the Swine Raisers Association of Thailand has said.

The rise in cost is due to preventive measures against African Swine Fever (ASF) in the past two years and the Covid-19 situation throughout last year for pigs and workers, association vice president Wiwat Pongwiwatchai said.

“We estimate that these investments have driven up the cost of swine raising by about Bt300 per animal,” he said.

“Furthermore, the cost of animal feed is also rising following the rising price of soybean and soybean meal in the global market where it has reached the highest point in the past five years due to lower global output,” he added. “Domestically produced raw materials for animal feed such as corn, tapioca and rice bran are also seeing an increase in price due to the government’s price guarantee scheme. These factors have put swine farmers nationwide in a difficult position.”

Wiwat added that according to Office of Agricultural Economics’ (OAE) data, the average cost of swine raising is at Bt75 per kilogram, while the current swine price at farm as announced by the association is at Bt76-Bt80 per kilogram.

“We expect that the OAE will announce the average cost of swine raising for the first quarter of 2021 at Bt78, as the drought could start as early as March and will drive the price of animal feed up even further. We also estimate that the rainy season this year will end sooner and leave us with a longer drought period in the second half of the year.

“The association will be working with the Ministry of Commerce’s Department of Internal Trade in keeping the price at farms nationwide at Bt80 per kilogram to help domestic consumers even though the cost is approaching Bt80 per kilogram,” he added.
