Earlier, FC Schalke 04 – currently playing in Germany’s Bundesliga 2 – announced on its website on Thursday that the club would remove logos of Russian gas company Gazprom from all its shirts.

The decision came just hours after Russia launched military attacks on its western neighbour in the early morning of Thursday.

“Following recent developments, FC Schalke 04 have decided to remove the logo of main sponsor Gazprom from their shirts. This decision has been made following discussions with Gazprom Germania. It will be replaced by lettering reading ‘Schalke 04’ instead,” the statement read.

Gazprom had been the German club’s top shirt sponsor before the decision was made.

The Public Health Ministry said on Saturday that it will continue providing free treatment under the home and community isolation systems for Covid-19 patients even though the disease will no longer be included in the list of emergency conditions from Tuesday.

Covid-19 patients will still get free meds in isolation, promises ministry

The ministry is due to remove Covid-19 from the Universal Coverage for Emergency Patients (UCEP) on March 1. Under UCEP, Covid patients receive three days of free treatment in any facility before they are switched to the hospital they are registered at under their state health insurance scheme.

However, after March 1, Covid-19 patients who do not require critical care will have to pay their own bills if they choose to be treated in private hospitals.

“Currently the dominant Covid-19 variant in Thailand is Omicron, in which 90 per cent of patients display mild or no symptoms and do not require hospital treatment,” the ministry’s permanent secretary Kiattiphum Wongrajit said. “The treatment condition has been adjusted to make hospital bed management more efficient and to prepare for the transition of Covid-19 from a pandemic to an endemic disease.”

He said after March 1, those who test positive for Covid-19 will still get free treatment under the home/community isolation systems.

“If their symptoms worsen, they will be transferred to hospital and receive free treatment under the UCEP scheme,” he said.

Kiattiphum added that the ministry will soon speak to relevant health funds about the disbursement of funds for Covid-19 treatment outside the UCEP scheme.

A 27-year-old was arrested in Nakhon Sawan’s Takhli district on Friday for allegedly tricking people into reserving Covid-19 jabs with him.

Man arrested for allegedly running Sinopharm jab scam

The Chulabhorn Royal Academy (CRA) recently filed a police complaint in Bangkok saying that somebody claiming to be a CRA representative was tricking people into paying for Sinopharm vaccines.

The suspect, Narongrit Sukheeket, claimed that he had responded to a CRA announcement calling for people to help distribute the vaccines. He said he joined the CRA OpenChat group, where he met a person called “Tookta” who claimed to be a CRA personnel.

This person allegedly told Narongrit to find bookings for Sinopharm vaccines at 699 baht per jab and that he would get 150 baht for each booking he got.

Hence, Narongrit said, he advertised the deal on his Facebook page and managed to get 50 bookings initially. For this he earned 7,500 baht. He later found another 15 people and tried to contact Tookta, but he/she had disappeared. He claimed he was not able to return the money to the victims, because he did not know who to return it to, adding that he only learned he was in trouble when he saw his profile being highlighted as that of a fraudster.

The suspect, who claimed that he is the one who has been tricked, was taken to the Criminal Court for detention.

A big, strong, vibrant three-year-old buffalo stud called “Chao Thongsuk” was sold by his owner for 6.5 million baht on Friday in one of the most expensive buffalo transactions in Thailand.

Buffalo stud sells for record-breaking 6.5 million baht in Chonburi

Chaiyan Poolpattanasap, owner of Chaiyan Farm in Chonburi, had initially wanted 7.5 million for the 1.68-metre tall, 1.1-tonne stud, but agreed to bring the price down by 1 million.

The buyer Somphong Sombathom, owner of Livestock Semen Production Centre in Maha Sarakham, said he had bought the stud for breeding.

The price tag on Chao Thongsuk was high because he had won the latest National Buffalo Festival, as well as royal cups in Sakon Nakhon and Phetchabun.

Chaiyan said he had bred some 10 buffaloes for these contests and had sold one for 3.5 million baht in 2020. He added that more people should go into breeding buffalos because the investment is only about 10,000 baht but the returns can be in hundreds of thousands or even millions of baht.

Somphong, whose farm has some 40 buffaloes and 60 cows, said he has had his eye on Chao Thongsuk for about a year now and managed to finally negotiate his price down to 6.5 million baht.

A new Covid-19 home-treatment service will launch on Tuesday (March 1), as Thailand begins a four-month transition from pandemic to endemic, the Public Health Ministry has announced.

New home-treatment service marks 4-month countdown to endemic in Thailand

After testing positive, people will be prescribed Favipiravir, Fah Talai Jone, or antipyretic, cough syrup or decongestant, according to the severity of their symptoms, the ministry said on Friday.

The new system will enable people who test positive via ATKs to treat themselves at home rather than visiting medical facilities.

The system is part of Thailand’s plan to manage Covid-19 as a general communicable disease or endemic, starting in four months time, according to ministry permanent secretary Dr Kiatiphum Wongrajit.

The transition to an endemic would mark the lifting of most restrictions currently in place.

The home-treatment system has already been rolled out in Chiang Mai and Phuket, Kiatiphum said. Under the system, which is also being trialled in Bangkok by Siriraj Hospital, patients are treated at home, where they must isolate and avoid travelling to reduce chances of spreading the virus.

Widening work to double capacity of the main highway between Yasothon and Amnat Charoen is 95 per cent complete, with the route set to open in April, the Department of Highways (DoH) said.

Northeast’s main artery to pump more goods, tourists in April after Bt1.3bn widening

Once complete, Highway No 202 will help boost goods transportation as well as tourism in the Northeast, said DoH director general Sarawut Songwilai.

It would also help local businesses connect to trade routes in the Indo-China region, he added.

The highway is being expanded from four lanes to eight over a distance of 32.79 kilometres from Tad Thong subdistrict in Yasothon to Ban Pleek subdistrict in Amnat Charoen. The Bt1.27-billion construction budget also covers nine concrete canal bridges, 45 roofed bus stops, lighting and traffic sign installations.

Highway 202 runs for 392km, stretching from Chaiyaphum province to Khemmarat district in Ubon Ratchathani where it connects with nine border checkpoints to Laos and Cambodia, making it a gateway to the Indo-China region. The highway runs through Nakhon Ratchasima, Buriram, Maha Sarakham, Roi Et, Yasothon and Amnat Charoen and is considered one of the most important highways in Northeast region.

Rayong fishery groups threaten blockade over oil spill compensation

Fishery groups in Rayong province have angrily rejected a compensation offer made by Star Petroleum Refining Plc (SPRC) for damage caused by its oil spill.

Rayong fishery groups threaten blockade over oil spill compensation

SPRC tabled the offer at a meeting with 48 fishery groups at Rayong Beach Resort Hotel in Muang district on Friday, where 50 police officers were deployed.

The fishery groups have demanded SPRC pay compensation of Bt1,000 per day for a year, or 360,000 baht, for every affected fisherman. However, SPRC’s head of compensation Wichai Chunhasomboon said the company would only offer one-time payments of Bt30,000 per person.

The fishery groups, led by head of Rayong Fishery Office Seri Reunlar, rejected the offer and demanded talks with SPRC’s executive directors on Sunday (February 27).

The groups warned that if negotiations were not successful, they would blockade Rayong’s Pradu Bay with 2,000 fishing boats and protest during Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha’s visit to Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate on Monday.

Thousands of litres of oil gushed from an undersea pipeline at SPRC’s single point mooring (SPM) some 20 kilometres southeast of Rayong’s Map Ta Phut port on January 25. The company was also behind another oil spill on February 10 as it moved the pipeline to investigate the leak. The second spill caused about 5,000 litres of oil that was still in the pipe to gush into the sea.

M-Flow fine suspended after outcry from confused drivers

The fine for using the new motorway M-Flow lanes without registering has been suspended until March 31, while the money will be returned to those fined earlier.

M-Flow fine suspended after outcry from confused drivers

Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob announced the suspension on Friday after motorists complained they were being fined 10 times the toll fee for accidentally using the M-Flow system.

The new multi-lane free flow system launched on February 15 at four checkpoints on Motorway No 9, namely Thap Chang 1, 2 and Thanyaburi 1, 2.

Many motorists said they had driven through the M-Flow lanes after confusing them with the Easy Pass lane, a pre-paid toll collection system that also does not have barriers.

“Those who used the M-Flow lanes but did not register for M-Flow system will not be fined right away, but they will have to pay the toll fee before March 31,” said Saksayam. “If they still did not pay after the deadline, then the fine will kick in.”

The Department of Highways estimates that up to 2,500 vehicles per hour can pass through M-Flow, greatly reducing congestion at toll booths.

M-Flow users must register at https://mflowthai.com/mflow or via the MFlowThai mobile application. This gives them access to special lanes that use video and AI technology to register the licence plates, enabling drivers to pay afterwards via credit card, online banking or counter service.

The Foreign Ministry has established an evacuation centre for Thais in Ukraine at the Tsisar Hotel in Lviv.

Govt sets up evacuation centre for Thais in Ukraine

Located in the west of the country at Horodotska St, 65, Lviv, Lviv Oblast, Ukraine, 79000, the hotel will provide temporary lodging for Thais in Ukraine. Thai officials from the embassy in Warsaw, Poland, will be stationed there to provide assistance and coordinate with relevant agencies, said government spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana on Friday.

He advised Thais in Ukraine to be ready to evacuate if the situation worsens following the invasion of the country by Russian troops on Thursday.

“Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has ordered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to coordinate with relevant agencies to evacuate Thai people in areas that could be affected by the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia as soon as possible,” said Thanakorn.

The Foreign Ministry said it is also organising vehicles to transport Thais in Ukraine to Lviv, which is located on the Poland-Ukraine border, and will take them back to their residences in Ukraine when the situation improves.

“The government urged employers in Ukraine to take care of their employees by providing shelters, food and other necessities,” said Thanakorn. “Also, keep the travel documents handy and prepare to evacuate out of the areas in case the situation escalates.”

Thanakorn added that as Ukraine had just announced the closure of its airspace, the Thai government is exploring alternative evacuation routes out of Ukraine, including chartered flights from Poland or other countries in Europe.
