Dumped industrial chemicals poison Lopburi water supply

The Pollution Control Department (PCD) has filed a police complaint against a company suspected of dumping hazardous waste and poisoning the water supply in Lopburi province.

On Friday, PCD chief Atthaphon Charoenchansa joined police to inspect the scene at Baan Deelang in Phatthana Nikhom district, 150 kilometres north of Bangkok. They found hundreds of dumped 200-litre barrels leaking chemicals into a four-rai area of Baan Deelang. Authorities in the district have suspended the local water supply to residents.

The PCD chief said chemical samples taken from the barrels were found to be flammable. Water samples collected from wells and other sources used by locals were found to be contaminated.

“Contractors dump hazardous waste because this method is cheaper than disposing of it legally,” said Atthaphon.

He said that the company responsible would be punished, adding that the clean-up operation would cost several hundred million baht. So far, the company that owns the polluted land has rejected the accusation, but evidence would prove their guilt, he said. The penalty would be lessened if the company cooperates and provides useful information, he added.

Plan to reopen Bangkok on Oct 1 not yet approved: CCSA

The Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said on Friday it had not yet approved reopening Bangkok to foreign travellers next month.

CCSA spokesperson Apisamai Srirangsan confirmed that the Bangkok Sandbox plan to accept fully vaccinated foreign tourists without quarantine from October 1 had not been given the green light.

Earlier this week, the Tourism and Sports Ministry and Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) agreed to propose the plan to the CCSA.

Apisamai said the proposal must first be discussed with relevant agencies before being sent to the Public Health Ministry for careful revision, because Bangkok is a large and diverse area. The finalised plan will then be presented to the CCSA for approval, she added.

Giant Bangkok drainage tunnel almost 90% complete

A giant 9-kilometre drainage tunnel to ease flooding in Bangkok is 86.70 per cent complete and should be operating by March next year, said the city’s governor on Friday.

Aswin Kwanmuang spoke after inspecting the Bueng Nong Bon drainage tunnel project, which stretches from Nong Bon in southeastern Bangkok to the Chao Phraya River.

The 5-metre-wide tunnel runs west for 9.4 kilometres at a depth of 30 metres. Starting from Rama IX Park in Nong Bon, the tunnel links with Bang Ao Canal and features seven drainage stations along the route to Bangkok’s main river.

The project launched in January 2016 and is scheduled for completion on February 15 before opening a month later.

“Bueng Nong Bon drainage tunnel will help prevent flooding on On Nut Road, Udom Suk Road and Sukhumvit Road,” said Aswin. The tunnel would increase drainage efficiency over an area of about 85 square kilometres, covering the districts of Prawet, Suan Luang, Phra Khanong, Bang Na, he added.

Japanese man jumps to his death in Bangkok after catching Covid

A Japanese man who apparently jumped to his death from his 11th floor condominium in Bangkok on Thursday had contracted Covid-19, police said on Friday.

Officers from Klong Tan police station were alerted of the suspected suicide at a 17-storey condominium located in Soi Ekamai 12 in Watthana district at 1am of Friday.

They found the body of Yuki (last name withheld), a 35-year-old Japanese national, lying in the front garden. The dead man’s right arm was broken and the torso was distorted from the impact. The body tested positive for coronavirus via a swab test.

Initial investigation revealed the deceased lived alone in a room on the 11th floor. The room was locked from the inside.

Neighbours speculated that he may have committed suicide after finding out that he was infected.

The body was taken to Chulalongkorn Hospital for an autopsy.

Bangkok residents file complaint against Thalu Gas protesters

A group of residents from Din Daeng Flats in Bangkok on Friday filed a police complaint against the pro-democracy protest group known as Thalu Gas.

The residents live around Din Daeng intersection in Ratchathewi district, where protesters have clashed with riot police almost every night for the past few weeks. Thalu Gas are a hardcore group of purportedly working-class youngsters who have disavowed the non-violent tactics of other protest groups. Police have hit back with tear gas, rubber bullets, water cannon and snatch squads, in what has been criticised as an undisciplined and disproportionate response.

One resident said the Thalu Gas protests were more like terrorism than calling for democracy, as the situation in the area is now worse than before.

She also blamed the police, saying their failure to take legal action against the protesters has resulted in impacts on residents.

She said residents in the area cannot sleep because protesters explode ping pong bombs and firecrackers until 1am-2am instead of ending their protests at 2pm-3pm, as before. Some residents have also been attacked by Thalu Gas protesters, she added.

Kamen Rider superheroes come to the rescue in Narathiwat

Troops, dressed up as Japanese “Kamen Rider” superheroes, travelled around Narathiwat’s Joh I Rong district on Thursday to distribute snacks, stationery and vegetables.

The most popular were the grasshopper-masked Kamen Rider 1 and the heavily armoured Kamen Rider Kuuga, who happily stopped to take selfies with children.

Squad leader Lieutenant Sakkarin Marohabutr said their aim was to bring smiles back to people, especially after they have been under so much stress from the Covid-19 pandemic.

The superheroes also presented a bicycle to one needy household.

Public Health Ministry bemoans rising mounds of infectious waste

The country’s waste disposal sites are groaning under 1,500 tonnes of infectious waste, which is likely to grow significantly given the rising number of Covid-19 patients, Deputy Public Health Minister Satit Pitutecha said on Thursday.

He added that though Thailand’s five waste disposal sites are working on the 1,500 tonnes of infectious waste collected since August 20, more disposal sites are required to deal with the garbage.

“The Public Health Ministry has announced the need for more disposal channels. The new channels should be able to incinerate infectious waste at more than 700 degrees Celsius and should be able to create temperatures high enough to destroy the resulting pollution. Workers will also have to be provided with proper protection gear to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

“Industrial waste disposal plants and community power plants can lend a hand,” Satit said.

South hotels to woo domestic tourists with premium packages

Hotel operators in the South are launching premium packages this month to attract domestic tourists looking to visit Phuket, Krabi, Phang Nga and Surat Thani.

The campaign follows relaxation of Covid-19 measures in the four tourist provinces under the government’s Phuket Sandbox and Samui Plus programme.

Surachat Iawsakul, a director of Thai Hotels Association (Southern Chapter), said on Thursday that the campaign aims to provide a premium travel experience from luxurious hotels and restaurants as well as marine activities, such as diving and sailing, at reasonable prices.

“Before the pandemic, luxury hotels sold room packages at around Bt5,000 to Bt10,000 per night. Now the prices have dropped to around Bt2,000 per night, which should attract wider groups of customers who want a premium travel experience,” he said. “Customers can reserve a package this month and choose their visiting period to fit their schedule from late September until the end of the first quarter of 2022.

“We estimated that throughout the campaign more than Bt5 million revenue will be generated from room packages alone,” he added.

The association also estimated that more Thai tourists would visit the southern provinces during the high season, or from November onwards, if daily Covid infections continued to decline, which would lead to further easing of travel restrictions nationwide.

Surachat added that after over two months of the Phuket “sandbox” progamme, the tourism industry in the province was gradually improving though the number of foreign visitors were not as high as the association had hoped.

“As of September 17 — the 76th day of the campaign — around 32,000 foreign tourists have entered Phuket,” he said. “However, looking back, when the Covid-19 outbreak started to escalate in July 2020, more than 90 per cent of about 2,500 hotels in Phuket had to shut their doors. In June this year, about 300 hotels in Phuket, or 12 per cent, were still open with approximately 15,000 total rooms. From July to August, the number of open hotels rose to over 500, or 20 per cent, with approximately 30,000 rooms.”

PM promises to look into relaxing restrictions on entertainment industry

Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha on Thursday accepted proposals of the Creative Industry and Artists Network to ease Covid-19 measures related to filmmaking and reopening of theatres.

PM’s Office spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana said the meeting was held via video conferencing between the premier and representatives of the network which consists of over 40 organisations in the entertainment industry as well as national and local artists.

The network has proposed that filmmaking crews be allowed to continue working while movie theatres and similar establishments be allowed to open in low-risk areas.

Prayut promised to have the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) consider the proposals as well as issue necessary regulations to ensure a safe working environment for personnel from the creative industry.
