Moderna delivery brought forward to mid-October

Thailand will receive almost 2 million Moderna vaccine doses next month, after the supplier brought forward the delivery date.

Zuellig Pharma, the distributor and importer of Moderna vaccine, revealed on Wednesday that the manufacturer will be able to deliver the first batch of 1,958,400 doses around mid-October. Thailand will then receive about 300,000 doses per week.

The country has ordered a total of 9 million Moderna doses through two state agencies – 8 million through Chulabhorn Royal Academy and 1 million through the Thai Red Cross Society.

Zuellig Pharma expects to complete delivery of 6 million doses by the end of this year, with the remaining 3 million doses scheduled to arrive no later than March 2022.

Samples from each vaccine batch will be sent to the Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for quality checks before the doses are distributed to private hospitals and the Thai Red Cross Society.

The Government Pharmaceutical Organisation will allocate the Moderna doses according to quotas booked through private hospitals and the Thai Red Cross Society.

Bangkok to accept foreign tourists without quarantine from Oct 15

From October 15, fully vaccinated foreign tourists will be able to visit Bangkok without having to quarantine, authorities said on Wednesday.

Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn announced the move after discussions with Bangkok Governor Aswin Kwanmuang.

The proportion of people vaccinated in all Bangkok districts is expected to reach the 70 per cent threshold for reopening by the end of this month.

Phiphat said all Bangkok districts will open to foreign travellers at the same time.

He added that four other tourism areas – Hua Hin, Cha-am, Chiang Mai and Pattaya – will open on October 1 if preparations go to plan.

Jab bus rolls out to inject hope for homeless and vulnerable Bangkokians

Bangkok’s vaccination bus brought much-needed Covid protection to homeless and other vulnerable people at three locations on Wednesday.

ABangkok Mobile Vaccination Unit (BMV) visited Ratchadamnoen Road in Phra Nakhon district, Hua Lamphong railway station in Pathum Wan, and Nana Road in Khlong Toei.

On arriving at the mobile vaccination unit, people are screened and asked to sign a vaccination consent form. Their ID card is then verified before they receive a dose of vaccine. They are then monitored for any side effects for 30 minutes before receiving an appointment for their second dose.

City Hall is using vaccination buses to make Covid-19 jabs freely available in the heart of communities, reaching vulnerable citizens who would otherwise be difficult to access.

The BMVs also mean residents don’t have to travel far for jabs, reducing the risk of the virus spreading via public transport. They can also be quickly redeployed to virus hotspots as needed.

“Bangkok’s ‘taxi graveyard’ now a veggie marvel”

The “taxi graveyard” at the Boworn Taxi Cooperative in Bangkok has been turned into a vegetable garden, staff members planting veg on the vehicles’ roofs.

More than 300 cabbies have returned their cars due to a severe shortage of passengers – another sign of how badly the Covid-19 outbreak has hit the economy.

The cabs now sport veggies like chilli, holy basil, eggplant and spring onions.

Phi Phi police, locals expand hunt for missing Austrian hotel manager

Police and villagers on Phi Phi Island in Krabi province have expanded their search for an Austrian hotel manager who has been missing for five days.

Florian Hallermann, 56, general manager of the Zeavola Resort, was last spotted by a resort security camera on Saturday afternoon. He was walking along the beach with a backpack.

Phi Phi police launched a search operation on Monday but failed to find any trace of the Austrian.

On Wednesday, officers and villagers split into three teams to cover forests, hills and caves around Laem Tong Beach, where the luxury Zeavola Resort is located. Local media reported that one of the search teams found the body of a Thai man in mangrove forest, though it is not yet known whether the death is linked with Hallerman’s disappearance. Koh Phi Phi Hospital is reportedly conducting an autopsy on the body.

Meanwhile, marine police have deployed vessels to hunt for the missing man in coastal waters. They have also asked local fishermen to help with the search.

Agency pushes for rubber price guarantee scheme to help farmers in Covid fallout

The Natural Rubber Policy Committee has in principle approved a 10.6-billion-baht price guarantee scheme for rubber farmers in a bid to alleviate their burden.

The committee, along with representatives from the Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry and the Rubber Authority of Thailand (RAOT), met Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha virtually on Wednesday morning.

Under the scheme, three types of rubber will be guaranteed. Rubber sheets at 60 baht per kilo, latex with 100 per cent dry rubber content (DRC) at 57 baht per kilo and 50 per cent DRC cup lump at 25 baht per kilogram.

The ministry and RAOT have been tasked with drafting details of the scheme and presenting it to the Cabinet for approval.

At the meeting, Prayut told RAOT representatives to be extra careful when registering rubber farmers as the government is trying to eliminate products that come from plantations in controversial areas such as land that encroaches on conserved forests or river sources.

“All rubber products for export must come from legal plantations. Failure to comply may result in a ban from international trade partners,” he said.

The premier also called on the ministry and RAOT to employ necessary measures to prevent corruption and ensure subsidies are put in the hands of actual farmers.

Thai health dept eyes reopening day schools in sandbox setting

The Department of Health is planning to expand its “Sandbox Safety Zone in School” project to day schools after it proved to be successful with boarding schools.

Director-general Dr Suwanchai Wattanayingcharoenchai said on Tuesday that the department had launched the campaign for on-site classes at boarding schools.

In line with the project, schools set up a separate screening, quarantine and safe or green zones. This project was deemed successful despite some infections via contact with outsiders.

The department has set up an additional seven measures for schools to follow over and above the six main measures (DMHT-RC) and six side measures (SSET-CQ) that are already in place.

The seven new measures are:
• Schools must assess themselves via the Thai Stop COVID Plus and MOECOVID websites
• Hold activities in small groups and stick within these groups
• Ensure food is nutritious and prepared in a hygienic manner
• Ensure all areas are well ventilated
• Set up an isolation zone if there are patients
• Set up a sealed route for travel
• Create a school pass for students, teachers and staff that carries all risk assessment data such as up-to-date test results, vaccination records and infection history.

In addition, at least 85 per cent of teachers and personnel in schools within the green zone must be inoculated and undergo risk assessment once a week.

Schools that are in the yellow or high-surveillance zone must conduct tests using antigen test kits (ATK) at least twice a week, as should schools in the orange or controlled zone.

Schools that fall in the red or maximum control zone must assess their risk on the Thai Stop COVID Plus website and apply Covid-free settings. These schools must ensure there are no more than 25 students in a class at any given time, create a school pass, conduct ATK tests among personnel once or twice a week and assess its risk thrice a week. Organisations within 10 metres of the campus are also advised to do the same.

Schools in the dark red or maximum and strict control zone are required to conduct ATK tests on personnel twice a week and assess their risk daily.

Buri Ram holds the street pork ball festival every year in July, but it was postponed to September this year. More than 100 shops have so far signed up to join the festival.
