Thai mushroom-pickers who strayed into Laos not injected with Pfizer: Foreign Ministry

The Foreign Ministry on Tuesday debunked rumours that a group of Thais detained in Laos after sneaking across the border have been injected with Pfizer vaccine.

Ministry spokesman Thani Saengrat confirmed that seven Thai mushroom pickers had been detained in Champasak province on August 1 after straying over the border from Sirindhorn district in Ubon Ratchathani.

However, reports in the Thai media that Lao authorities had vaccinated all seven mushroom pickers with Pfizer were false, he said. Thani added that such fake news risked encouraging other Thais to follow in their footsteps.

Laos began mass vaccination on June 16 with Pfizer jabs procured via Covax. Pfizer, which is not yet available in Thailand, is an mRNA vaccine that offers high protection against the Delta variant of Covid-19.

Health authorities in Laos had yet to decide whether to vaccinate the seven Thai encroachers, Thani said.

The seven Thais are being held at Detention Centre 21 in Champasak province. They will be detained for 14 days in line with Lao disease-control measures before being deported back to Thailand.

The Foreign Ministry is coordinating with Champasak authorities to provide assistance to the detainees and ensure all seven can return to Thailand as soon as possible.

Mobile jab unit vaccinating over 4,000 vulnerable Bangkokians per day

A mobile vaccination team tasked with protecting Bangkok’s most vulnerable residents has jabbed more than 4,000 at-risk people per day over the past three weeks, authorities said on Tuesday.

Between July 15 and August 2, the Bangkok Comprehensive Covid-19 Response Team (Bangkok CCRT) has vaccinated 76,756 at-risk people, said city governor Aswin Kwanmuang.

That figure comprises 43,916 senior citizens, 32,673 people with one of seven underlying medical conditions, and 167 pregnant women.

In addition to its vaccination service, Bangkok CCRT has also tested 22,337 people with antigen test kits. The results showed 19,671 people were negative while 2,706 showed infection.

Of those who tested positive, 55 were sent to community isolation (CI) and 2,609 entered home isolation.

PM donates 1 tonne of fruit to front-line medics

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has dipped into his own pocket to buy 1 tonne of Thai fruit from agricultural cooperatives as a gift for medical workers and volunteers caring for Covid-19 patients, government spokeswoman Ratchada Thanadirek said on Tuesday.

The prime minister bought mangosteen, rambutan and longan sold under the “Farmers Happy” campaign, whereby fruit from cooperatives nationwide can be delivered to homes via Thailand Post’s parcel service.

“Farmers Happy” is a collaboration between the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) and Thailand Post.

“During the Cabinet meeting today, PM Prayut praised the campaign as an innovative way of helping fruit farmers who are suffering from plummeting prices and oversupply, while allowing people to buy fruits without increasing the risk from Covid-19 by going to markets,” she said.

“The PM also invited other Cabinet members to join him in buying fruit as gifts for front-line medics.”

Attack on Narathiwat Army camp kills ranger, injures four soldiers

One ranger was killed, and four soldiers injured in the wee hours of Tuesday when suspected insurgents began launching grenades at the makeshift Army camp in Narathiwat’s Tak Bai district.

The Army has set up a makeshift camp on the banks of Sungai Kolok River to prevent people from sneaking across the natural border between Thailand and Malaysia. The camp comprises eight soldiers and five tents.

A soldier said that some 15 suspected insurgents began firing grenades at the camp through an M79 grenade launcher from the Malaysian side. They also lobbed pipe bombs and began firing automatic weapons at the tents, prompting the soldiers to return fire.

“There was an exchange of gunfire for about 15 minutes until the other side stopped firing and probably fled the scene after realising that they could not seize the camp,” the soldier said. “Once the smoke cleared up, we found the body of volunteer ranger Kiattikhajorn Nakhadee with multiple gunshot wounds along with over 50 bullet casings and some 10 exploded pipe bombs.”

Four other soldiers also sustained non-critical injuries and were sent to Sungai Kolok Hospital.

Regiment chief Colonel Thaweerat Benjathikul said he believes the attack was in response to the recent extrajudicial killing of Rosalee Lamso, a suspected insurgent for whom an arrest warrant had been issued in Pattani’s Nong Chik district.

“The soldiers were prepared as we expected an attack and were able to prevent insurgents from seizing the camp, though the attack has resulted in the tragic loss of an Army personnel,” he said.

Thailand got 5.3 million doses of AstraZeneca jabs in July

AstraZeneca confirmed on Tuesday that it had delivered 5.3 million doses of its Covid-19 vaccine to Thailand in July as part of its commitment to deliver 61 million doses to the country.

The July deliveries meet the vaccine manufacturer’s projections, which show that in months of uninterrupted manufacturing, it can supply between 5 million and 6 million doses to Thailand.

As of the end of July, AstraZeneca had delivered 11.3 million doses to Thailand in total and has also started delivering to nearby countries from its Thailand manufacturing centre.

“Our partner Siam Bioscience is performing amongst the strongest in our worldwide manufacturing network, operating at full capacity and delivering to the highest quality standards. Where possible, we will collaborate with them to deliver vaccines faster,” said James Teague, country president of AstraZeneca (Thailand).

The vaccine is around 80 to 90 per cent effective against severe disease and hospitalisation and is highly effective against all variants of concern, including Beta and Delta.

The vaccine’s overall safety is comparable to other vaccines and cases of thrombosis, which are very rare, can be treated with early diagnosis.

The vaccine is being distributed worldwide without profit for as long as the pandemic lasts.

Chiang Mai dog café bends under Covid pressure, seeks homes for its furry friends

A dog café in Chiang Mai that has gone bankrupt due to the impact of Covid-19 is looking for homes for its 28 dogs.

The Smile Dog Café made the announcement on its Facebook page on Monday.
“We are finished. What we had been afraid of has finally happened to us. The Covid-19 pandemic has affected us tremendously as the cost of raising these 28 dogs is extremely high. We have tried our best amid the situation and would like to ask for your understanding and support,” the café’s owners posted.

“The café will be opened until the end of August and everyone is welcome to come say goodbye to the dogs. Some of these dogs will need to find new owners who would be able to take care of them for the rest of their life. All our dogs are well-trained and very friendly. Anyone interested in adopting these dogs is required to come and meet the dogs in person at the café.

“We would like to thank all our customers who have been giving us support and have made constant visits at our cafe. This is the only solution for everyone to survive and live a better life. We truly regret what happens, but we really have done our best. Goodbye,” the post read.

The Smile Dog Café will operate until the end of this month and if anyone else is interested in taking over the business, they can contact the café owners via its Facebook page.

People urged not to believe ‘fake news’ about self-medication

The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES) warned people on Monday to stop believing rumours that six drugs will help treat Covid-19.

The ministry said people isolating at home must strictly follow doctors’ instructions and that self-medication can cause harm.

The DES spokesperson announced on Monday that “reports claiming that paracetamol, ambroxol, dextromethorphan, chlorpheniramine, Vitamin C, and green chiretta [fah talai jone] can cure Covid-19 have been checked by the Anti-Fake News Centre. The Public Health Ministry’s Department of Medical Services has confirmed that this information is fake news. All Covid-19 patients isolated at home must be treated by doctors based on their symptoms. Self-medication can be dangerous and cause complications.

“The authorities emphasise that self-medication can be harmful and call on people to not follow false instructions. People should also stop sharing or posting these false rumours,” the spokesperson said.

Cash-strapped cabbies beg govt to reconsider age criteria for handout

Representatives of the Thai Taxi Network Association met Labour Minister Suchart Chomklin on Monday to plead against a new regulation that makes taxi drivers above the age of 65 ineligible for the 5,000-baht cash handout.

The government recently announced that under the Social Security Act’s Article 40, only self-employed people aged 15 to 65 will be eligible for the handout. They must also have become members of the social security scheme before July 31.

“The cash-handout will apply to social security members under 65 who live in maximum control areas or ‘dark red’ zones,” Suchart said. “However, to allow those above 65 to apply as well, the ministry will have to call on the Office of National Economic and Social Development to change the Social Security Act and then propose it to the Cabinet for approval.”

He added that he will also call on the Cabinet at its next meeting on August 10 to extend the deadline of social security membership to after July 31.

At around 4am on Tuesday, more than 100 taxies were seen parked outside the Labour Ministry’s headquarters in Bangkok’s Din Daeng district in a bid to seek help.

Most cabbies had put up signs with messages like “Prayut help me. I have no money to pay for car loan, house rent and food”, “There aren’t any customers due to Covid-19”, and “We don’t care about politics, just want to feed our families”.

Supermarket shelves emptied as soon as lockdown extended

Bangkokians dashed to the nearest supermarket as soon as the government announced on Sunday it was extending the lockdown by another 14 days in a bid to tackle the fast-spreading Delta variant.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), which is chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, expanded the dark-red zone from 13 provinces to 29 and announced they would all be under partial lockdown until August 31.

Residents in Bangkok and some dark-red provinces emptied supermarket shelves as soon as they heard of the extension.

Most supermarkets have run out of daily necessities like meat, vegetables and sauces.
