Forbes ranked the Chearavanont brothers as the richest persons in Thailand in 2021, followed by Chalerm Yoovidhya, Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, the Chirathivat family and Sarath Ratanavadi.

According to the Forbes, Thailand’s economy contracted by 6.1 per cent in 2020, recording its biggest drop in more than two decades due to stalled tourism.

Despite a sudden spike in Covid-19 cases this year, the government has pledged to reopen the tourist haven to vaccinated foreign visitors by October, with Phuket having reopened on July 1.

Buoyed by the prospect of a recovery and an uptick in exports, the benchmark stock index surged 43 per cent since fortunes were last measured 15 months ago, the magazine noted. That rise helped boost the combined wealth of the kingdom’s richest men by over a fifth to US$160 billion (THB5.16 trillion), it said.

The tycoons on the 2021 Forbes list of Thailand’s 50 richest added more than 20 per cent to their combined wealth of $160 billion, despite the impact of Covid-19 on the tourism-dependent economy, the magazine said.

The Chearavanont brothers of Charoen Pokphand Group retain their top spot with a net worth of $30.2 billion, up from $27.3 billion last year.

The July 2021 issue of Forbes Asia also featured Bangkok Bank president Chartsiri Sophonpanich on its cover. Chartsiri’s net worth is reported to be $1.15 billion.

In late June too, soldiers and police officers, including one dressed as the Masked Rider from the television series, showed up near Narathiwat’s Cho Airong market on Wednesday to hand out vegetables to residents.

Locals said they were touched by the concern and care shown by officials, and many recorded the event by posing for photographs with the soldiers.

The Samut Prakan Lawyers Council aims to pursue legal action against Ming Dih Chemical Co for negligence that caused the explosion at its factory in Bang Phli district on Monday, resulting in one death, injuries, damage to property and possible chemical leftover that may have long-term effects.

The fiery explosion occurred early in the morning at Ming Dih Chemical’s foam factory on Soi King Kaew 21 in Rachathewa subdistrict. Residents within a 5-kilometre radius of the factory were ordered to evacuate to avoid danger or inhaling harmful substances. Firefighters successfully brought the flames under control on Tuesday morning after spending more than 26 hours fighting it.

The incident resulted in one death of a firefighting volunteer, injured 40 and damaged over 100 houses in surrounding areas.

“We have set up six public service units around the blast site, where affected people can sign up to file a class-action lawsuit,” said Lawyers Council president Phumset Phutthawong on Wednesday. “We have also provided a QR code so people can scan and conveniently fill out the form online.”

Phumset recommended that those who have been injured by the explosion should immediately see a doctor and attach a doctor’s note or evidence of treatment with their forms.

“Those whose property was damaged should make a list, including the price of the property,” he said.

“The council will investigate the long-term effect of chemical substances that could be contaminating the air and water around the blast site,” he added. “This may take years of study as we do not know how long the chemicals can build up in the human body before any symptoms are displayed.”

Nakhon Ratchasima locks down entire village after Covid-positive woman hosts party to celebrate being freed from prison

Nakhon Ratchasima province on Wednesday prohibited all travel to and from Ban Pong Khok village in Serngsang district’s Nonsomboon subdistrict until July 20 after the district chief reported that three persons in a family tested positive for Covid-19, leading to fears of a new cluster with 36 people from 22 households being classified as high risk.

“The village has a total 68 households. We estimate there are at least 36 people who came into close contact with the patients during the past week, and another 160 who are in the low-risk group,” Serngsang district chief Sanit Srithawee said.

Sanit also said a preliminary investigation revealed that the infections stemmed from a woman who had just been freed from prison and returned to her house in Ban Pong Khok on June 23. She had been staying there without notifying the province’s public health office.

“After driving her home, her son, who resides in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Muang district, was tested on June 27 and found he was infected,” Sanit said.

“He alerted his mother to get tested and found that she and another person living in the house also tested positive.”

The woman reportedly said she had hosted a party among neighbours to celebrate being released from prison. They also helped her harvest tapioca at her plantation, resulting in at least 36 persons from 22 households being classified as high risk and other 160 being low risk.

The province’s public health office has ordered them to self-quarantine and monitor their symptoms closely.

Since the start of the new wave on April 1, Serngsang district has reported 42 cases. Of these, 12 persons have been cured and discharged while 30 are being treated at Serngsang hospital, which has a total capacity of only 30 beds. The district is planning to add 12 more beds in the next two weeks to prepare for additional infections caused by the new cluster.

How one teacher’s passion saves remote Trang school from closure

Schools in remote areas of Thailand usually have few students and even fewer teachers. And often, when the number of staff and students is low, the Education Ministry closes these schools.

One such school facing closure was Ban Khuan Thani School in Trang’s Kantang district, but teachers fought hard against the order and won.
Among the teachers who fought to keep the school running is Pathomchai Woratanti, 26, whose style and passion for teaching has upped the number of students from 21 to 80. Here we peek in on one of his classes to witness the magic.

Pathomchai Woratanti, a volunteer teacher at Trang’s Ban Khuan Thani School, gets creative in a bid to motivate youngsters to attend class. He has been a volunteer teacher at this school for two years now, even though he holds a degree in hotel management.
However, he said he loves teaching and even though his classes are online now, he is happy to dress in funny costumes to keep the youngsters interested. Pathomchai earns only 2,000 baht a month because he is not a registered teacher.
Voice: Hello, this Chiang Mai girl at heart [he is wearing the traditional attire of northerners] will teach you all about Thai spellings.
Pathomchai said he was the first teacher in Trang to come out as an LGBTQ, adding that he was glad his students’ parents believed in his abilities.
Voice: I am proud of my work. I drew more students to this remote school, which faced closure by the Education Ministry. Also, my entertaining style of teaching has earned the school a name. I am also proud that I can inspire students to dream of a better future. Education brings children, be they rich or poor, one step closer to their dreams.
Pathomchai said he is happy with this job and plans to complete his teaching degree so the school can officially employ him as a teacher.
