Unemployment shows improvement in successive months

The unemployment rate in May improved to 2.7 per cent from 2.9 per cent in April, while it was even higher at 3.1 per cent in March, the Fiscal Policy Office said on Sunday.

“The statistics are based on the number of workers under social security who have applied for unemployment benefits,” said Phisit Phuaphan, director of the office’s Macroeconomic Policy Bureau.

“Unemployment is showing an improving trend in the last two months, and is significantly lower than the country’s highest unemployment rate in October 2020 of 4.5 per cent.”

Phisit added that the global unemployment rate in May was also picking up, as seen from the rate in large economies such as the United States and China.

“The US reported 5.5 per cent unemployment in May, improving from 5.7 per cent in April, while China also reported 5.0 per cent unemployment this month, decreasing from 5.1 per cent in the previous month,” he said.

BMA urges care in disposal of infectious wastes

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) on Sunday asked citizens to dispose of infectious wastes properly.

BMA deputy permanent secretary Chatri Wattanakhejorn said amid the Covid-19 situation, Bangkok generated 11,393 tonnes of infectious wastes, or 63 tonnes per day, between January and June this year.

“Of the total, 8,299 tonnes, or 46 tonnes per day, came from hospitals, public health service centres and clinics, while 3,094 tonnes, or 17 tonnes per day, came from quarantine facilities, field hospitals, hospitels, mobile testing units, vaccination centres and residents,” he explained.

He said the BMA has asked Bangkokians to put infectious wastes into a two-layer plastic bag, pour disinfectants on the wastes, tie the bag tightly and drop it separately, so garbage collectors can take and burn it properly at garbage disposal plants in Onnut and Nong Khaem.

“Regarding used face masks, people should put them into a plastic bag, tie the bag tightly, place a label or write “face masks” on the bag and drop it into orange bins,” he said.

“About 1,000 bins were placed across Bangkok, such as district offices, health service centres, hospitals, city halls, schools, sport centres, youth centres, fire stations, public parks, markets and in front of shopping malls.”

Negotiations on for earlier delivery of Pfizers Covid-19 vaccine

The Covid-19 situation has aggravated since April due to the mutations of the virus, and the spreading of the Delta variant, Dr Sophon Iamsirithavorn, deputy director-general of the Department of Disease Control said.

Although the initial outbreak was in the Bangkok area, it spread later to the perimeter and crowded places such as factories and establishments. The infection has entered the communities and more households, he said.

Dr Sophon said the main measures that could help contain the outbreak were to reduce mobility, reduce travel and reduce the risk of getting infected in places such as the workplace. Other measures include not eating at food outlets.

Regarding procurement of more vaccines in addition to Sinovac and AstraZeneca, he said an order would be placed for 20 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine.

The Office of the Attorney-General has reviewed the purchase contract and will finalise it on Monday, and then it will be sent to the Cabinet for approval on July 6.

He said the need of the hour was negotiating a faster pace of delivery, as the company says the vaccine will be delivered around the fourth quarter of this year. He said there was the likelihood of the vaccines arriving earlier through collaborative negotiations. He said at this point he could not confirm it.

The vaccine was registered by the Food and Drug Administration on June 24.

Lonely blind boy in Covid-hit family tugs at netizens heartstrings

The story of Michael, a blind boy whose family has been hounded by Covid-19, has gone viral among netizens on Sunday.

Wit Nongyai, a Facebook user, said Michael’s mother had died due to Covid-19 on Thursday, while the boy’s father was being treated at the hospital as he tested positive for Covid-19 on Friday.

He explained that neighbours have to send meals to Michael, who lives in a fourth-storey apartment, by using a rope as he does not have any relatives. The food packets are tied to a long rope, which the boy pulls up.

“I would like to ask the government or private agencies to conduct a Covid-19 test on Michael, as he is at risk of infection,” he said.

Only 0.1 per cent of Sinopharm vaccine recipients had side-effects

Of the 67,992 Sinopharm vaccine recipients nationwide, 97 per cent did not experience any abnormal symptoms, Prof Nithi Mahanonda, secretary-general of Chulabhorn Royal Academy, said.

He said the adverse reactions were reported within 30 minutes while under observation after the vaccination.

Only 100 of the 67,992 subjects vaccinated, or 0.1 per cent, had an adverse reaction within 30 minutes of vaccination. The most common symptoms included dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and shortness of breath, all with mild to moderate symptoms, he said.

The Royal College of Chulabhorn sent an SMS to vaccine recipients to report any adverse reactions so as to keep a track of side-effects. There were 17,154 SMS responders, representing 25 per cent of vaccination recipients.

Most of them had no symptoms.

In a number of people who reported having abnormal symptoms, the most common adverse reactions were: headache (2.3 per cent), tiredness (1.7 per cent), muscle ache (1.7 per cent), pain and swelling at the injection point (1.6 per cent), and fever (1.5 per cent).

From the report of the insurance company, there were eight vaccination recipients who had requested medical insurance claims for adverse reactions. Nithi emphasised that there were no reports of severe symptoms from the Sinopharm vaccination.

He also said that on Sunday, one million doses of the vaccine had been loaded on a Thai Airways plane for delivery in Thailand.

State officials catch 52 monitor lizards at two universities

As many as 52 monitor lizards were caught at two famous universities — Thammasat University Rangsit Campus in Pathum Thani province, and Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University in Nonthaburi province — on Friday and Saturday.

Poj Thapprathum, chief of Phanthai Norasing Wildlife Reserve, said the agency officials caught 35 monitor lizards on Saturday alone.

Monitor lizards are large lizards in the genus Varanus. They are native to Africa, Asia, and Oceania, and one species is also found in the Americas as an invasive species. About 80 species are recognised.

The business sector’s demand for monitor lizards is high as its meat can be consumed while its skin can be used to make bags and belts, increasing the risk of extinction.
