Japan’s donation of 1.05 million AstraZeneca jabs to arrive early July

Thailand has officially accepted Japan’s offer of 1.05 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, which will be delivered early next month.

The letter of agreement was signed by Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai on Tuesday.

The “vaccine exchange” agreement decrees that the vaccine be only used to boost public health and forbids the use of doses for military purposes. Thailand will also have to cover any additional expenses and should be ready to disclose any vaccine-related information upon request.

Thailand’s vaccine rollout, which kicked off on June 7, relies on AstraZeneca shots produced locally by Siam Bioscience. However, the production has experienced delays, which has also had an impact on supplies for Taiwan, Malaysia and the Philippines.

Sinovac batch found with sediment declared safe

Vials of the China-made Sinovac vaccine found with sediment are safe to use, Medical Sciences Department chief Dr Supakit Sirilak announced on Tuesday.

Vials from the CoronaVac batch numbered C202105079 were flagged by the Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for containing a milky sediment at the bottom, Supakit said.

The Government Pharmaceutical Organisation (GPO) immediately collected samples from the batch and sent them to the department for laboratory analysis.

The batch carries the registration number 1C 3/64 (NBC), date of manufacture 10.05.2021 and date of expiration 09.11.2021.

Analysis of the vaccine samples in seven syringes and 15 vials showed normal physical characteristics of a milky white liquid that separated when left to settle for 3-4 minutes. After settling for approximately 10 minutes, the liquid was observed to have separated into a clear level on top and a white level below. The test was carried out at the Institute of Biological Products, which also found the acid-alkaline balance of the vaccine was within acceptable limits.

Meanwhile, checks on the temperature at which the batch was transported and stored revealed no problems.

Dr Supakit cautioned, however, that it was important to verify the physical characteristics of each vial of vaccine prior to use. Any vials found with sediment that does not dissolve after shaking, or precipitates quickly, must not be used and instead be reported to health authorities for investigation, he added.

A group of nightlife employees tied bikinis to the gates of Government House on Tuesday, in a symbolic plea for government aid after their workplaces were shut last year.

The group, including workers at bars, karaoke shops and massage parlours, said the government could close entertainment venues to combat Covid-19 but it must also compensate them for lost income.

Human rights defenders joined the protesters, who submitted a letter to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha via the PM’s Office asking for monthly payments.

FDA warns medics not to use defective Sinovac vaccine

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned medics to avoid inoculating Sinovac vaccine if they find any abnormality in the dose, likely caused by improper storage and transportation.

On Monday, the FDA said that some lots of Sinovac looked like gel, and this could not be improved by just shaking the vaccine bottles.

The FDA explained that this condition was caused by improper temperature during storage or transportation. The FDA said that the vaccine must be stored at 2.8 degrees Celsius in order to preserve its quality.

In case medics find abnormal Sinovac doses, the FDA said they must not be used and the situation must be reported.

Songkhla on high alert after migrant workers head home to Malaysia

Songkhla province in the South of Thailand went into high alert on Monday and announced maximum control measures for 30 days after hordes of workers began crossing the border into Malaysia.

Colonel Ayuphan Karnasuta, commander of the 5th Infantry Regiment, said from now on, anybody travelling in or out of the province must be able to produce a “certificate of necessity”.

Security along the Thai-Malaysia border, especially in the districts of Sadao, Na Thawi and Saba Yoi has been tightened to stop people from sneaking across.

The Covid-19 situation in Malaysia is still unresolved, and the government recently announced an extension of the country’s “lockdown” for the third time in a row since June 1. The lockdown is expected to last for another two to three weeks as the daily rate of infections in the country is still in the thousands.

Security authorities in Thailand have promised to be more vigilant and prevent illegal border crossings.

The Songkhla Public Health Office on Monday reported 275 new Covid-19 infections, most of them transmitted via family contact.
