Anutin ready to listen to all sides of Bangkok lockdown debate

After the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) aired plans to put Bangkok under a seven-day lockdown, Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on Thursday he was willing to listen to the pros and cons.

CCSA suggested the lockdown to control the capital’s soaring infections, but it also admitted that it may cost workers their jobs and may spread the virus further if labourers head to their hometowns.

Anutin, meanwhile, said he has discussed the issue with Bangkok governor and was ready to support any step taken to control the spread of Covid-19.

He also said he will speak to the operator of Muang Thong Thani and ask for the Bussarakham field hospital to be kept open for another two or three months. This is because most of the Covid-19 infections are in Bangkok and adjoining provinces.

Of the 4,108 infections on Thursday, 1,359 were in Bangkok, followed by 297 in Samut Prakan, 259 in Samut Sakhon, 254 in Chonburi, 170 in Nonthaburi and 157 in Pathum Thani.

As for the 120-day countdown for the country’s reopening, Anutin said every aspect of the situation will be considered before the country opens to tourists. If the risk is still high, the opening may be delayed, he said.

Royal Thai Air Force trainee smashes international military record for push-ups

A trainee Royal Thai Air Force (RTA) officer has smashed the record for push-ups at the international Joint Chiefs of Staff Course in Russia.

Royal Thai Air Force trainee smashes international military record for push-ups

On June 18, Wing Commander Tanawat Kitcharoensakkul stunned the might of the Russian military by doing 222 non-stop push-ups, shattering the record of 141 held by a Russian military student since 2017.

The RTA said Tanawat’s name now tops the military academy’s board of record holders after he excelled in the physical fitness test, which is an integral part of the military course.

For the push-up test, candidates are allowed no rest periods and must keep their feet together and back and arms straight in the upward position. Lowering themselves, candidate’s chests must touch the counting device, a 2-inch box with lights that signal each correctly executed push-up.

The push-up challenge is one of 24 physical fitness tests included in the course. All Russian military students and international counterparts are obliged to complete this endurance test. Record holders in each category are officially inducted into the academy’s roll of honour.

This is the sixth Covid-19 vaccine to be approved for use in Thailand, after Sinovac, Sinopharm, AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson and Sputnik V.

Thai fruits popular in China face random inspection

China’s customs department has asked Thailand’s Department of Agriculture to conduct random checks on fruit orchards and packaging factories for contamination from insecticides and the Covid-19 virus.

Thai fruits popular in China face random inspection

“Chinese authorities have requested that plantations and factories that export durian, longan, mangosteen and coconut be randomly inspected. At least three factories and three orchards of each type of fruit should be checked within July,” the department’s director-general Pichet Wiriyapaha said on Wednesday.

“All operators have been told to prepare for inspection and adhere to food safety standards required by China as well as guidelines provided by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation and the World Health Organisation on food safety during the Covid-19 outbreak.”

Phichet added that China’s customs department will check all imported food for Covid-19 contamination at all checkpoints and will suspend the exporter for a week if any traces of the virus are found on the products in the first two checks.

“If the virus is found for the third time, the exporter will be suspended for four weeks,” he added.

The four fruits under scrutiny dominate Thailand’s food exports to China. From January 1 to June 15, Thailand has exported 253,017 tonnes of durian worth 31 billion baht, 89,366 tonnes of longan worth 3.9 billion baht, 20,486 tonnes of mangosteen worth 1.6 billion baht, and 61,070 tonnes of coconut worth 1.1 billion to China. The total export value of these four fruits is over 37 billion baht.

“The department is confident that plantations and factories that have been registered with the department will pass China’s random inspection with no problem,” said Pichet.

The image and video clip of a wild elephant bulldozing his way into a house in Hua Hin went viral on Sunday and by Wednesday had sparked a flurry of entertaining memes.

House owner Rachadawan Phungprasopporn had posted images of a wild elephant stealing food through a hole in her kitchen wall in a bid to push authorities to help. The kitchen’s wall had been broken by another hungry wild elephant last month.

Though the images motivated provincial officials to repair her home, it also sparked hilarious memes.

Science students at Prince of Songkla University came up with a physics formula for driving the elephant away, but the most popular memes were the ones featuring Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and Deputy PM Prawit Wongsuwan.

The Swedish Embassy joined the fun by replacing the elephant for footballer Victor Lindelöf and asking people to cheer for the Swedish team in Euro 2020. Sweden is among 16 teams qualified for the knockout stage.

The Australian Embassy also used the opportunity to advertise Vegemite – the dark brown brewer’s yeast extract that is a breakfast favourite among Aussies. Apart from being served on buttered toast, Vegemite has also been used as an ice cream flavouring.

Chulalongkorn Hospital has suspended its Covid-19 test services from Thursday to Sunday due to a shortage of beds.

Bed shortage forces Chulalongkorn Hospital to suspend Covid-19 tests

Prof Dr Thiravat Hemachudha, head of the hospital’s centre for emerging infectious diseases, said on his Facebook page that the hospital was facing bed shortage as they have also had to treat people who tested positive for Covid-19.

He expected other hospitals to face the same situation.

“Covid-19 screening since last year showed that the government cannot contain the spread of the coronavirus as more patients have developed severe symptoms,” Thiravat said.

He also warned vaccinated people not to lower their guard against Covid-19 as they still carry the risk of becoming infected.

“Everyone in hospitals is at risk of infection even if they do not develop any symptoms,” he added.
