BMA denies responsibility for distribution of vaccines to inoculation centres

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) on Sunday said it was not responsible for distributing Covid-19 vaccines to vaccination stations across the capital.

BMA denies responsibility for distribution of vaccines to inoculation centres

The BMA rebuttal came after the Public Health Ministry claimed that the BMA and provincial government agencies were responsible for distributing Covid-19 vaccines to vaccination stations in the area.

The ministry added that it had delivered 1 million doses of AstraZeneca and Sinovac vaccines to the BMA to commence the vaccination drive in June this year.

Reacting to the claim, the BMA said the Public Health Ministry had promised to deliver 2.5 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccines to the authority.

The BMA said that it had received only 350,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine and 150,000 doses of Sinovac vaccine to be used from June 7 to 14 this year.

The BMA also explained that its vaccine allocation plan was:

AstraZeneca

– 181,400 doses for people who had registered via Mor Phrom (Doctors Ready) application.

– 52,600 doses for the second jab.

– 8,000 doses for elderly and bedridden patients.

– 100,000 doses for the general public.

– 8,000 doses as a reserve for containing the spread.

Sinovac

– 128,000 doses for the second jab for people living in areas at risk of Covid-19 infection.

– 26,000 doses for containing the spread of new Covid-19 clusters.

“Officials are ready for mass vaccination once the vaccines are delivered,” the BMA added.

Betting amounting to tens of billions of baht expected during Euro 2020

Football betting is expected to intensify during the European Football Championship 2020, currently underway, the Centre for Gambling Studies (CGS) said on Saturday, while warning parents to keep an eye on their children.

Betting amounting to tens of billions of baht expected during Euro 2020

The month-long Euro 2020 ends on July 11.

The centre said a study with Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Economics and Research Centre for Social and Business Development showed that more than 30 million people in Thailand are gambling addicts.

“Of the total, 700,000 people are new gamblers who are seeking the easiest way to make money amid the pandemic,” the centre said.

A study by the Thai Health Promotion Foundation showed that 2.4 million people were engaging in football betting, and 82.6 per cent of them were children.

In Euro 2016 alone, 16.8 per cent of gamblers were children who claimed that they were invited by friends or they got carried away by the tournament’s atmosphere.

Kasikorn Research Centre and the Centre for Economic and Business Forecasting of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce revealed statistics of funds flow during previous European Football Championships:

▪︎THB33 billion in 2004

▪︎THB41 billion in 2008

▪︎THB78 billion in 2012

▪︎THB57.8 billion in 2016

Both centres also forecast that Euro 2020 would generate funds flows in tens of billions of baht.

Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha has approved Bangkoks proposal to relax disease control measures for five types of public places in Bangkok.

PM unlocks five activities in Bangkok from June 14

In a Facebook post, the PM said the approval, with conditions, was given because the epidemic situation was at a controllable level, and as people in Bangkok had begun to receive vaccination in large numbers.

The five places that have got the nod are:

▪︎Museums and ancient sites

▪︎Parks and botanical gardens

▪︎Beauty clinics

▪︎Health massage establishments (only foot massage), and

▪︎Nail salons and tattoo shops.

The relaxation will take effect from Monday. The Bangkok authority will issue orders regarding preventive measures for the five types of places to be strictly followed. Those failing to adhere may be ordered to close.

Prayut said the decision was made to balance virus control and the economic situation as many are seeking resumption of their livelihood.

Low immunity after Covid vaccination in some people worries experts #SootinClaimon.Com

Low immunity after Covid vaccination in some people worries experts

Experts are encountering the problem of low immunity from the Sinovac and AstraZeneca vaccines.

Low immunity after Covid vaccination in some people worries experts

Thiravat Hemachudha, director of the Health Science Centre of Emerging Diseases at Chulalongkorn University, revealed that many people who had received two doses of the Sinovac vaccine for three to four weeks showed no neutralising antibody, or at only 20-30 per cent.

For a vaccine to be effective, the ability to inhibit a virus must be more than 20 per cent to develop immunity.

People who are normally vaccinated will have high, mid and low response, but they have to go up. Inactivated vaccines, such as the rabies vaccine, require three injections on day zero, three and seven and begin to see immunity in the blood around day 10 and develop in all people on day 14. Two injections a month apart are assessed at three or four weeks after the second dose. However, there should be a satisfactory level of growth in everyone, he said.

But, in some groups that were vaccinated on the same day and got the same vaccine, it appears that there was no immunity at all (less than 20 per cent). It is possible that the same lot of vaccines may have been a problem. Some have major congenital conditions, including diabetes that does not enhance the immune system, he said.

Some patients with Covid-19, who have been infected despite having had two doses of Sinovac or one dose of AstraZeneca, were still infected even in the post-injection immunity test, but it was not very high.

In cases where immunity does not increase, or is less than 68 per cent, which is a theoretical number correlated with virus prevention, they may want to consider getting a third dose of vaccine, either the same brand or a new one.

In the case of allergic reactions or side-effects, there is no clear evidence that it increases immunity because it is inflammation through different systems.

The number of vaccinations against Covid-19 in Thailand from February 28 to June 11 totalled 5,975,070 doses — 4,362,685 first dose and 1,612,385 second dose.

A project to set up kinnari-shaped solar cell lampposts in Samut Prakan province has drawn criticism over its high price.

Up to 6,773 poles, each costing THB94,884, were erected in Rachathewa Subdistrict Administrative Organisation’s area.

A company that had lost in the project bidding emphasised that materials used in each part of the lamppost must be described clearly.

It explained that an instant post for the pole’s base is THB4,500, cheaper than a spiral post that costs THB12,000.

An aluminium mould for the post’s body would be more than THB1 million, while galvanised steel is THB45,000.

In Buddhist traditions, the kinnaras (male) and kinnaris (female counterpart), half-human half-bird creatures, are two of the most beloved mythological characters, which are believed to come from the Himalayas and often watch over the well-being of humans in times of trouble or danger.

Closure of social security vaccination centres not linked to vaccine shortage: Suchart

The temporary closure of all 45 Bangkok vaccination stations for social security members was not due to AstraZeneca vaccine shortage, Labour Minister Suchart Chomklin insisted on Saturday.

He said Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan had urged the ministry to improve efficiency of services as soon as possible.

“[Public Health Minister] Anutin and I are working closely in order to effectively contain the spread of Covid-19,” he said.

He expected all vaccination stations to reopen on Monday.

A total of 174,193 people had received jabs at the 45 stations from June 7-10, according to Social Security Office spokesperson Nantachai Panyasurari.

The figure, however, fell short of the target of 200,000 people or 50,000 per day.
