Registration for vaccination via app to resume from June 24

The suspended Mor Phrom (Doctors Ready) vaccine registration application would be revived from June 24, Government Spokeswoman Ratchada Thanadirek said on Friday.

Registration for vaccination via app to resume from June 24

The Ministry of Public Health had set up the Mor Phrom mobile application for the general public to register for Covid-19 vaccination on May 1. However, the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration suspended the vaccine reservation process via the application on May 26 to improve the system, while people who had already registered would still get their jabs as per schedule.

“People will be able to use the Mor Phrom application for vaccine reservation again from June 24,” said Ratchada. “If you are not comfortable with registering via the application, you can still register with hospitals and the district health office in your area either in person or via the provided online channels.”

Ratchada added that since the vaccination for the general public started from June 7 to June 10, up to 1.45 million doses of vaccine had been provided, increasing total inoculation in the country from 4.21 million doses to 5.66 million doses in just four days.

“The government also has started providing jabs to workers in industrial estates and nearby communities,” she said.

“A pilot vaccination unit has been set up at Map Ta Phut Complex industrial estate in Rayong province since June 9 with the capacity to inoculate 1,000 people per day. Some 25,000 people from six nearby industrial estates have registered to get the jabs.”

Ratchada added that so far the government had inoculated 1,600 Thai students who wished to travel overseas for studies, while some 2,000 other students are awaiting their jabs.

“Once all the registered students get their jabs for overseas study, the Department of Consular Affairs would consider opening the next round of registration,” she added.

Children aged 12-18 years to get Pfizer vaccine in fourth quarter

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on Friday that the ministry aimed to vaccinate children aged 12-18 years against Covid-19 with the Pfizer vaccine, which is expected to arrive in the fourth quarter of the year.

Children aged 12-18 years to get Pfizer vaccine in fourth quarter

The Department of Disease Control signed an initial contract with Pfizer on Thursday, which allows Pfizer to submit documents to register the vaccine with the Food and Drug Administration.

The ministry expects to buy 20 million doses of Pfizer’s vaccine within this year.

“The DDC is now working with schools to set up vaccination units and provide jabs to students,” said Anutin.

“It is estimated that there are about 5 million children in this age bracket. The 20 million doses that we will buy should easily cover this target group.

“The manufacturer of Sinovac vaccine is planning to register the vaccine for use in children aged over three years,” Anutin said. “Once the registration is completed, we would immediately inoculate children in this age group as we would already have the vaccine in stock,” he added.

When asked if the delivery of AstraZeneca vaccine to Thailand would be affected as the company has said that it would deliver vaccines manufactured in Thailand also to other countries in Southeast Asia, Anutin replied: “The company is under contract with the Thai government to deliver the vaccines on time. We should start asking such questions only when they fail to adhere to the schedule. In fact, we should be glad that a product from Thailand could help other countries.”

Isolated heavy rains forecast for most parts of Thailand

The Thailand Meteorological Department said on Saturday that a monsoon trough lies across the upper North and upper Laos as a tropical depression develops over the upper South China Sea.

Isolated heavy rains forecast for most parts of Thailand

Meanwhile, a strong southwest monsoon prevails across the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand.

Isolated heavy showers to very heavy rains are forecast for the North, Northeast, the East and the west coast of the South.

People in these areas should beware of accumulated rains and heavy rains, the department said.

Waves in the Andaman Sea rise 2-3 metres high and more than three metres high during thundershowers. All ships should proceed with caution and small boats should keep ashore, the department said. The tropical depression over the upper South China Sea is expected to further develop into a tropical storm and move to the Tokin Bay and make landfall over upper Vietnam on June 12-13. This will cause the monsoon trough to remain over the upper North and upper Laos with isolated heavy rains in the upper North and the upper Northeast, the department said.

The weather forecast for the next 24 hours:

North: Thundershowers in 60 per cent of the areas with isolated heavy rains; temperature lows of 23-24 degrees Celsius, highs of 32-35°C.

Northeast: Thundershowers in 70 per cent of the areas with isolated heavy to very heavy rains; temperature lows of 22-24°C, highs of 28-35°C.

Central: Thundershowers in 40 per cent of the areas; temperature lows of 23-25°C, highs of 33-37°C.

East: Thundershowers in 60 per cent of the areas with isolated heavy rains; temperature lows of 23-27°C, highs of 29-34°C; waves two metres high and over two metres during thundershowers.

South (east coast): Thundershowers in 60 per cent of the areas; temperature lows of 24-26°C, highs of 33-35°C; waves a metre high and 1-2 metres during thundershowers.

South (west coast): Thundershowers in 70 per cent of the areas with isolated heavy rains; temperature lows of 22-25°C, highs of 27-32°C; waves 2-3 metres high and over three metres during thundershowers.

Bangkok and surrounding areas: Thundershowers in 40 per cent of the areas; temperature lows of 26-27°C, highs of 34-36°C.

Social Security jab stations closed for two weeks in Bangkok

All 45 Bangkok vaccination stations for social security recipients were temporarily closed on Friday, though the government insists this was not due to a shortage of vaccine.

Social Security jab stations closed for two weeks in Bangkok

The jab stations will reopen on June 28 after measures are implemented to improve efficiency of services, authorities said.

A total of 174,193 people had received jabs at the 45 stations from June 7-10, according to Social Security Office (SSO) spokesperson Nantachai Panyasurari. However, that figure fell short of the target of 200,000 people or 50,000 per day.

He blamed the shortfall on unsuitable conditions and incomplete information.

For instance, some people were rejected by vaccination staff because their body temperature or blood pressure was high due to hot weather, or their information submitted by organisations was missing, said Nantachai.

“Hence, we decided to improve services at all vaccination stations in a bid to ensure maximum efficiency,” he added.

Labour Minister Suchart Chomklin insisted that the temporary closure of the SSO vaccination stations was not due to insufficient supply of vaccine.

A 60-year-old man died at Krabi Hospital on Thursday, two days after receiving a shot of AstraZeneca vaccine.

The unnamed man, a lawyer, received the jab on Tuesday in the same hospital and reported no side effects during the 30 minutes of monitoring afterwards.

He then returned to his home in Thabprik subdistrict but began suffering from chest pain a day later. His family rushed him to the hospital on Wednesday but doctors were unable to save his life.

Dr Suphot Phukaoluan, director of Krabi Hospital, said there is no evidence that the death was caused by the vaccine.

The body has been sent to Vachira Phuket Hospital for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

According to local reports, the man’s relatives suspect the vaccine played a role in his death since the deceased was healthy and had no underlying health problems. The family said they will file a case for compensation with the National Health Security Office (NHSO).

The NHSO has announced compensation of THB400,000 in case of death linked to Covid-19 vaccination, even if it is subsequently found the death is not directly related to the vaccine.

Anutin met ambassadors Thierry Mathou and Sibille de Cartier d’Yves to discuss healthcare measures for French and Belgian citizens in Thailand.

After the meeting, Anutin said Mathou proposed that 10,000 doses of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine be imported for French expats above the age of 45.

“The Department of Disease Control has approved the motion and will import the vaccine by the end of this month,” he said. “We also discussed other bilateral agreements on healthcare and international trade.”

Meanwhile, the Belgian ambassador has called on the government to provide necessary healthcare to Belgian expats, the cost of which will be covered by Belgium’s social security system. Anutin said the envoy promised to provide similar services to Thais living in Belgium.

“The ministry has agreed in principle and will have the Social Security Office look into details and take care of the issue,” Anutin said.

“The ministry has also promised the ambassador that Belgian citizens, as well as other foreigners living in Thailand, will be entitled to a Covid-19 jab provided they register via http://www.thailandintervac.com.”

Johnson and Johnson’s vaccine is one of the five Covid-19 vaccines approved by Thailand’s Food and Drug Administration. The other four are AstraZeneca, CoronaVac or Sinovac, Moderna and Sinopharm’s Covilo vaccine.

Grandmother offers to sell kidney to help family through Covid crisis

A 64-year-old grandmother from Nakhon Pathom announced on Thursday that she is desperate to sell her kidney to help her family survive the Covid-19 crisis.

Grandmother offers to sell kidney to help family through Covid crisis

The unnamed woman said her family consists of an elder daughter, two sons, a daughter-in-law and two grandchildren.

She said the Covid-19 outbreak had closed the Chinese restaurant where she and her sons had worked, depriving them of income, while the meatball factory where the daughter worked had cut her wage to 200 baht per day.

She herself had suffered a motorcycle accident and was no longer able to work at a construction site, she added.

“I do not know whether it is against the law or not, but I want to sell it [the kidney],” said the woman.

She was unable to seek the government’s Covid-19 relief assistance because no one in the family was skilled in using a smartphone, she said.

Instead, neighbours had donated food to help the family through the Covid-19 crisis.

Free quarantine stay to be cancelled from July 1

People visiting Thailand or returning home will have to pay for their quarantine, because the government will soon stop supplying free accommodation, the Office of the National Security Council (ONSC) announced on Friday.

Free quarantine stay to be cancelled from July 1

General Natapol Nakpanit, ONSC secretary-general, said the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) has been eyeing the cancellation of state quarantine facilities since March, as few people are coming from overseas.

He added that the authorities are considering offering a discounted rate for alternative state quarantine.

State quarantine will not be provided from July 1 unless ordered otherwise by the prime minister.
