36 workers in Bangkok found with Covid-19 variant that emerged in India

Thirty-six more people working at an Italian-Thai Development construction camp in Bangkok’s Lak Si area have tested positive for Covid-19 with the strain of the virus first seen in India, the Department of Medical Science reported on Friday.

36 workers in Bangkok found with Covid-19 variant that emerged in India

Earlier on Friday, the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration had revealed that the variant of the virus was found among 15 infected workers at the camp, which has become a cluster after 1,060 of the 1,667 workers living there tested positive for Covid-19 on Wednesday.

“The Department of Medical Science tested 80 positive samples from workers and people living in nearby areas and found that 36 of them had the strain B.1.617.2, first seen in India, while the rest are B.1.1.7, first seen in the UK,” said Dr Supphakit Siriluck, the department’s director-general.

“Currently about 87 per cent of the virus found in Thailand are of the strain that first emerged in the UK, while the variant that emerged in India has been discovered only recently.

The department will further investigate samples from other clusters to analyse the spreading pattern of each variant,” he added.

Public Health England revealed that the variant of Covid-19 found in India could spread as fast as the strain found in the UK, but there was no evidence of more severe symptoms or increase in death rate.

“Furthermore, the strain that emerged in India is still responding to the vaccine, therefore the public should not panic over its discovery in Thailand,” added Supphakit.

He said the department had been testing up to 384 samples of Covid-19 per week by means of whole genome sequencing, which is higher than the WHO’s 150 samples per week to study the virus situation in each country and to watch out for the variants of concern which include the ones from UK, India, South Africa and Brazil.

An Indian national was arrested on Friday in Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district for entering Thailand illegally through the natural border with Myanmar.

The man was arrested at a pier in Wiang Phang Kham subdistrict, opposite the Myanmar town of Tachileik that has spawned Covid-19 clusters in Thailand.

“The 29-year-old had no documents and confessed to entering Thailand through the natural border. He said he was heading to Bangkok to take a flight to India. He also admitted that he had been working in Myanmar to collect money for his fare back home,” a border police officer said.

The man has been detained and will be tested to see if he is carrying the Indian variant of the Covid-19 virus.

Also on Friday, officials at the Mae Sai checkpoint arrested four Thais for entering the country without going through procedures put in place to control the spread of Covid-19.

The four are Thalitha Reun-Ngam, 47, from Kanchanaburi; Kanokporn Sitthiyodpreecha, 35, from Chiang Rai; Natthee Boonnawa, 35, from Uttaradit; and Somjai Samphanphrae, 31, from Bangkok.

They reportedly said they had gone to Myanmar for work before the border in Chiang Rai had been closed off. They apparently paid a Myanmar national between 10,000 and 13,000 baht each to help them cross the mountainous route into Thailand.

All four are being detained at the Mae Sai Police Station for questioning and will be charged for violating the law.
