No walk-in vaccinations at Bang Sue Grand Station yet

Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob said on Wednesday that a planned walk-in Covid vaccination service at Bang Sue Central Station in Bangkok was under discussion after the prime minister called a halt to the move on Tuesday.

No walk-in vaccinations at Bang Sue Grand Station yet

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha put the brakes on the plan over concern it could trigger overcrowding and vaccine shortages at jab points.

The PM intervened after Saksayam announced on Monday that the station would provide walk-in jabs for transport workers from May 24 before expanding the service to the general public from June 1.

On Wednesday, Saksayam said the jabs for transport staff would go ahead as scheduled.

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said the Bang Sue Grand Station service was not a model for walk-in vaccinations. Instead, the Transport Ministry had set up a centre at the station to jab between 10,000 and 100,000 public bus drivers, taxi drivers, airport checkpoint workers and others, he added.

The plan for walk-in vaccination is just a backup, said Anutin.

Meanwhile, people must book vaccinations through the Mor Prom application or prior registration at vaccination centres.

5 new Bangkok virus clusters take total to 34

Bangkok authorities announced the discovery of five new Covid-19 clusters on Wednesday, bringing the total in the capital to 34. The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said the clusters had spawned 876 new cases on Wednesday.

5 new Bangkok virus clusters take total to 34

The five new clusters are at Bangkapi Market, construction workers’ camps in Bang Kho Laem and Don Muang, an ice factory in Chatuchak, and a rented warehouse in Bang Sue.

The CCSA is especially concerned about outbreaks at workers’ camps in the city.

Several districts have more than 1,000 workers each in construction camps, including Bang Kapi, Bang Khen, Lat Phrao, Huay Kwang, Bang Khae and Bang Kho Laem, according to CCSA spokesman Apisamai Srirangsan.

Camps where infections are found are being sealed to isolate the workers. Workers at camps located on construction sites can continue to building tasks as normal.

For others, a “bubble” system will use shuttle buses to ferry workers to and from the sites.

Officials also urged locals living close to camps and construction sites to help monitor the situation. Any workers spotted drinking alcohol in groups should be reported to authorities, they said.

Institute director Dr Jinda Rojanamethin said the study would examine the immune response to the SARS-CoV-2 virus after Covid-19 vaccination in cancer patients.

The target group for the trial is cancer patients who are at least 18 years old and are currently undergoing treatment or have been treated in the last six months. The vaccine being used in the trial is the Sinovac brand.

Volunteers will be injected with two doses of Sinovac vaccine, four weeks apart.

Their immune response will be measured via blood tests before, and two weeks after the second dose. This will help gauge how much protection against the virus Covid-19 vaccine offers cancer patients.

Lock your door or a ‘well-wisher’ may show up

The suspect, identified only as Surasak, was tracked down by police to a hideout in Sathorn on Tuesday.

He allegedly climbed up the condominium building’s fire exit at around 3.30am on May 13 and tried to open doors on the fourth floor. Finding all rooms locked, he went to the fifth floor and let himself into a room that was unlocked.

Upon spotting the resident – a Chinese national – Surasak pretended he was looking for something before letting himself out.

Police say the suspect confessed to entering the room and has also admitted he had previously been charged for a drug violation.

The suspect has said that he used to work as a condominium guard and knew how the security system works.

Besides, he said, he really only wanted to wish the room owner good luck.

Israel to compensate Thai workers hit by missile strike

Israel will compensate the families of Thai workers hit by a missile strike on Tuesday that killed two and injured eight, said Labour Minister Suchart Chomklin on Wednesday.

Israel to compensate Thai workers hit by missile strike

The Royal Thai Embassy in Tel Aviv reported that at 2.35pm local time on Tuesday, rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip by the Hamas group into Israel’s Eshkol, a town located 14 kilometres away.

The strike killed two Thai workers at an agricultural-product packaging factory and injured eight others. One of them required surgery for serious injuries.

“According to the regulations of Israel’s National Insurance Institute, workers who are injured or 10-19 per cent disabled receive one-time compensation of 150,000 shekels, or about THB1.5 million,” said Suchart. “In cases of more than 20 per cent disability, workers are compensated at 6,000 shekels per month (THB60,000) until death.”

In case of death while working, the victim’s wife is compensated at 60 per cent of the monthly compensation of 6,000 shekels (about THB36,000 per month) until she remarries. The victim’s children receive 10-20 per cent of 6,000 shekels, or about THB6,000-12,000 every month until they are 18 years old.

“On top of this, the Labour Ministry’s fund for Thai workers overseas will pay medical costs of up to THB30,000 for each injured person, while families of the deceased will receive THB40,000 compensation plus a funeral allowance of up to THB40,000,” said Suchart.

The ministry also revealed the names of the Thai nationals killed and injured in Tuesday’s strike.

Killed were Weerawat Karanborirak, 44, from Phetchabun, and Sikharin Sa-ngamrum, 24, from Buri Ram.

The injured were:

1. Attarachai Thamkaew, 28, from Ubon Ratchathani (required surgery)

Hospital director Rienthong Nanna said the 3,000-square-metre field hospital took 12 days to set up, and also includes 48 ICU beds as well surgery and emergency facilities. The system also allows doctors to monitor ICU patients from a distance.

Rienthong added that the ventilation system in the field hospital circulates air in a closed-circuit system and can filter out viruses.

A construction workers’ camp in the area recently became a Covid cluster with hundreds of workers testing positive.

The Ratchaphiphat 2 field hospital is located in the temple school at Wat Si Sudaram Worawihan in Bangkok Noi, which is one of 16 districts battling cluster outbreaks across the capital.

The Ratchaphiphat 2 field hospital has space for 200 patients (100 men and 100 women) with mild Covid-19 symptoms but can be expanded to support another 36 patients.

“This is the first field hospital to open inside a temple with strict measures to contain the spread of Covid-19, including wastewater and garbage management,” Aswin said.

City Hall was setting up more field hospitals to cope with the expected rise in infections, he added. He noted that Covid-19 had now spread into Bangkok’s communities and worker camps after emerging in entertainment venues in late March and early April.

“Therefore, we ask the public to obey restrictions to cut the number of new Covid-19 cases as much as possible,” he said.

Anutin eyes way of delivering jabs to walk-ins

In a bid to inoculate as many people as possible, Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on Wednesday that his ministry is looking into ways of using extra jabs on people who have not registered on the Mor Phrom platform.

Anutin eyes way of delivering jabs to walk-ins

“Imay be speaking out of turn why I say jabs should be provided to walk-ins as well,” Anutin said, referring to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s comment on Tuesday that no shots would be given to walk-ins.

Anutin said the “ministry will prioritise those who have registered, but there will always be some doses leftover due to no-shows.

“Also, each box of AstraZeneca doses carries 12 vials of the vaccine even though the box says 10. This means we will have two extra doses for every 10 registrants,” Anutin pointed out.

“Once the vaccines are brought out of storage, we can’t put them back in and they need to be used up.

“To avoid wastage, vaccination stations can invite people living nearby to get a jab, regardless of their registration status,” Anutin said.

“This announcement can be made three or four hours after the administration of doses begins each day, once officials have a total headcount of people who have registered and shown up at the unit.”

Prayut had said on Tuesday that he did not want jabs to be provided to walk-ins at the moment as Thailand does not have a large enough stock of vaccines to cover all citizens.

“I want the primary registration channel to still be the Mor Phrom app or Line account and have told related agencies to fix the platforms after people had problems registering,” Prayut said.
