Bangkok provides free Covid-19 testing to workers in risky groups until May 31

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will provide free Covid-19 testing to people in professions at high risk of infection, and who are not covered by the social security system, from May 5-31 at the Bangkok Youth Centre (Thai -Japan) in Din Daeng district, Governor Aswin Kwanmuang said on Saturday.

Bangkok provides free Covid-19 testing to workers in risky groups until May 31

On April 16, the BMA had started free testing of social security members – under Article 33, 39 and 40 of the Social Security Act – in a bid to curb the spread of the virus.

The youth centre is capable of testing 2,000 people per day.

From April 16 to 30, a total of 32,453 have come to the centre to get tested, of whom 808 tested positive, or 2.5 per cent.

“From May 5, workers who are not under social security can receive free tests at the youth centre, with priority given to those that have contact with several people, such as food delivery staff, public vehicle drivers, taxi drivers — both cars and bikes,” he said.

Aswin added that the BMA was procuring additional vaccines for staff of agencies in the province whose work might expose them to the virus, such as teachers, Don Mueang airport staff, Metropolitan Electricity Authority staff and road sweepers in 50 districts.

“We estimate that there are about 500,000 people in these groups who need to be vaccinated for their safety,” he added.

Customer protection police, together with Food and Drug Administration officers, raided several candy shops in Bangkok’s Yaowarat area selling eye jellies, a candy suspected of making children sick.

On Tuesday, a mother posted on her Facebook page that her son and daughter had consumed the jellies, and had to be hospitalised due to vomiting, fever and stomachache.

In response to this case, the officials on Friday visited candy shops in Yaowarat and checked all the eye jellies being sold there.

Their inspection revealed that the jellies sold in five shops had no registration number or a label in Thai language.

The officials confiscated 33,000 candies, worth THB300,000.

PM unveils new vaccination plan with focus on inoculating all adults

The government aims to procure 150 million or more doses of vaccine to tackle Covid-19 in Thailand, Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha posted on his Facebook page on Saturday.

PM unveils new vaccination plan with focus on inoculating all adults

“The original goal was to get 100 million doses of vaccine for 50 million adults in Thailand, with some manufacturers scheduled to make deliveries next year,” he said in the post. “However, as the outbreak situation is highly volatile, we cannot set a vaccination plan based on the assumption that herd immunity will be achieved when the majority of the population is vaccinated.

“The government has, therefore, set a new target of 150 million doses, or enough for all adults in Thailand or roughly 60 million people, while having some left in reserve,” Prayut said.

“The reserve also aims to respond in cases where the immunity of vaccinated people weakens, requiring additional jabs.”

Prayut added that the government would employ a more aggressive approach in procuring the vaccine as well as seek alternatives from new vaccine manufacturers. “Currently we have negotiated with seven manufacturers and are planning to branch out more to ensure that we get vaccines on time. We have to race with all other countries who are also eyeing getting more vaccines for their people as well,” he added.

“Lastly, the government is discussing with doctors and experts in public health over adjusting the vaccination plan to prioritise giving the first jab to as many people as possible,” said Prayut.

“Doctors unanimously agree that the risk of contracting the virus and developing severe symptoms, or even death, fall considerably after receiving the first jab. Therefore, we should focus on vaccinating as many first-dose receivers as possible.

“If we follow this adjusted plan, it is estimated that by the end of July about half of the adult population of Thailand will have been vaccinated with the first jab and therefore are well-protected against Covid-19,” said Prayut.

The move follows a recommendation by the provincial communicable disease committee.

The city had earlier imposed a lockdown from April 26 to May 9, or until the situation improves.

“As the number of new infections is still rising in the province, the committee decided to extend the lockdown until May 17,” the BMA said.

According to the order, the following premises must remain closed: theatres, water and amusement parks, zoos, rinks for skating, rollerblading, etc, snooker clubs, bowling and arcade centres, internet cafes, swimming pools, fitness centres, exhibition centres, museums, libraries, nurseries (except in hospitals), elderly care homes (except where overnight admissions are allowed), boxing stadiums and schools, martial arts schools, tattoo parlours, dance studios, horse racing courses, amulet markets, health and beauty centres, spa and massage parlours, stadiums and public parks.

Meanwhile, department stores, shopping malls and community malls can be open from 11am to 9pm, but they must refrain from holding promotional activities. Restaurants can be open until 11pm but offering only take-home services.

As of Friday, Bangkok still topped the country’s list of most infected provinces with 869 confirmed patients, taking total infections in the province to 16,917 since the start of the third wave last month.

Over 5,000 people vaccinated in Klong Toei, more than 8,000 tested

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) said that as of Friday 5,006 people residing in Klong Toei communities had been vaccinated against Covid-19 in a move to contain the rising cluster cases found in the areas.

The BMA dispatched two mobile vaccination units to Tesco Lotus Rama IV and Wat Klong Toei School on Tuesday, BMA permanent secretary Silapasuay Raweesangsoon said.

The move followed a CCSA report last Sunday that throughout April, 304 people residing in or near slums in Klong Toei district had tested positive for Covid-19.

Bangkok Governor Aswin Kwanmuang said on Tuesday that to efficiently contain the cluster cases in Klong Toei, about 70 per cent of the population, or 50,000 out of 80,000 people in the communities, must be vaccinated.

From May 4 to 6, 5,006 people were vaccinated at the mobile units, while 489 people did not get their jabs due to high blood pressure, tachycardia or a change of mind.

The BMA is planning to dispatch additional mobile units soon and aims to vaccinate around 2,500 to 3,000 people per day until May 19, she said.

The city has launched an active case finding campaign by means of swab testing among people in Klong Toei communities, Silapasuay added.

“From April 27 to May 6, 8,022 people were tested, of whom 219 were positive and 5,614 negative, while 2,189 results were awaited from the lab,” she added.
