‘This is a field hospital, not a motel’: woman complains about another patient

A woman went online to complain about another female patient sleeping with her boyfriend in a field hospital in Chiang Mai despite zones clearly separating male and female patients there.

‘This is a field hospital, not a motel’: woman complains about another patient

The woman voiced her complaint via the Facebook page of CM108.com on Wednesday.

According to a photo of the chat box published on the page, the complainer said she wanted CM108.com to voice “her rights” at the field hospital.

She explained that her rights were violated after a woman in her female zone at the field hospital allowed a boyfriend in so she could sleep with him. She also claimed that the boyfriend’s friend followed his mate into the female zone despite a clear separation of the zones for male and female patients.

The complainer added that when she informed hospital staff about this, they simply suggested that she move to another bed.

“This is a field hospital, not a motel,” she concluded.

Baht expected to strengthen today, but could weaken from virus situation

The baht opened at 31.34 to the US dollar on Thursday, strengthening from its close of 31.36 on Wednesday. The Thai currency is likely to move between 31.30 and 31.40 during the day, Krungthai Bank market strategist Poon Panichpibool said.

Baht expected to strengthen today, but could weaken from virus situation

He predicted that the baht would strengthen on Thursday due to a weakened dollar. However, the Thai currency would weaken if Thailand’s Covid-19 crisis intensifies.

Poon added that the baht would weaken slightly as the number of daily Covid-19 cases in Thailand has stayed at around 2,000.

He explained that exporters would start selling the dollar when the baht weakens to between 31.40 and 31.45.

Meanwhile, importers would purchase the dollar when the baht strengthens near 31.30.

Govt negotiating for patent to manufacture Favipiravir locally

The government is negotiating with foreign firms to get a patent to produce Favipiravir tablets locally, deputy government spokesperson Traisulee Traisoranakul said on Wednesday.

Govt negotiating for patent to manufacture Favipiravir locally

“During a Cabinet meeting this week, Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul informed the Cabinet that the ministry had ordered enough Favipiravir tablets from Japan to meet current demand in treating Covid-19 patients,” she said.

“Furthermore, the Government Pharmaceutical Orgnisation (GPO) is negotiating with foreign partners to obtain a patent to produce the medicine domestically,” Traisulee said.

She said there would be no monopoly on Favipiravir even after the government obtains the patent.

“Private hospitals will still be able to import the medicine for their own use,” she added.

GPO deputy managing director Sirikul Matevelungsun said earlier this month that Thailand had more than 400,000 Favipiravir tablets in stock and that the GPO had already placed an order for an additional 500,000 tablets to cope with the rising infections.

Up to 70 Favipiravir tablets are needed to treat each Covid-19 patient.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) on Wednesday decided to postpone the easing of weekday lockdown measures at popular Chatuchak Market until June or until the Covid-19 situation improves, BMA deputy permanent secretary Wanlaya Wattanarat said.

The measures have been in place since March.

“We had planned to help increase revenue for merchants by opening the market until 6pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, while on Friday, Saturday and Sunday merchants could open until 10pm. The market was to be closed every Monday for cleaning,” she said.

“However, due to the third wave of outbreak, the BMA has postponed the weekday opening until June 1 or when the situation improves,” Wanlaya said.

“All promotional activities scheduled to be held around the clock tower in the market will also be postponed accordingly,” she said.

Cabinet reshuffle, new public health minister necessary, say most CEOs

A recent survey of business leaders in Thailand showed that most believe a Cabinet reshuffle is necessary to effectively tackle the third Covid wave, which has sent the number of infections soaring and pushed the daily death toll into double digits.

Meanwhile, 46.5 per cent called on the government to reduce or waive utility bills and 27.8 per cent said they want the state to offer remedies in a bid to stimulate spending.

The CEOs also called on the government to accelerate the vaccination roll-out and allow private hospitals to order vaccines.

As for measures to curb infections, 36 per cent want their home provinces to be locked down, 33.8 per cent want knowledgeable personnel to provide advice via hotlines or applications and 27.3 per cent said lockdown measures should be used in some provinces or even the entire country. CEOs also said the state should permanently shut down venues where cluster outbreaks were sparked and arrest Thais who have been bringing in illegal migrant workers and spreading new strains of the virus.

Ministers fail test

When asked to give the premier and economy and public health ministers a score out of 10, most CEOs gave them a “fail”.

Indian Covid-19 strains ‘not in Thailand yet’ #SootinClaimon.Com

Indian Covid-19 strains ‘not in Thailand yet’

Two potent strains of Covid-19 spreading rapidly in India have not yet been detected in Thailand, a Chulalongkorn University virologist said on Wednesday.

Indian Covid-19 strains ‘not in Thailand yet’

Dr Yong Poovorawan said Chula’s laboratory recently tested more than 500 samples taken from Covid-19 patients in Thailand and found 98 per cent were the B117 (UK) strain. None of the samples tested positive for the Indian, Bengal, South African or Brazilian strains, he said.

The Indian variant spreads faster than the UK strain because of a change in a spike gene from asparagine to tyrosine and its enhanced ability to enter human cells, explained Dr Yong.

Meanwhile, the Bengal variant has a Lysine spike gene at position 484 that may give it the same protection from vaccines as the South African and Brazilian strains.

India is now the global hotspot of the pandemic with more than 300,000 new cases per day this week and a death toll that has risen above 200,000.
