No curfew but 18 provinces marked ‘red’ face strict measures for 14 days

NationalApr 16. 2021

By The Nation

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) has decided to not announce a curfew anywhere in the country as it will only burden and inconvenience the public.

CCSA spokesman Taweesin Visanuyothin said the Public Health Ministry has proposed that each province should be marked out in coloured zones and measures should be based on the intensity of the situation.

The red zone will cover 18 provinces, namely Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chonburi, Samut Prakan, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Samut Sakhon, Pathum Thani, Nakhon Pathom, Phuket, Nakhon Ratchasima, Nonthaburi, Songkhla, Tak, Udon Thani, Suphanburi, Sa Kaew, Rayong and Khon Kaen.

The remaining 59 provinces will be considered control areas or orange zones.

These measures will be enforced from Sunday and be effective for 14 days before the situation is assessed and new measures considered. However, CCSA said, if the outbreak worsens, provincial governors can introduce stricter measures.

Measures in place for the next 14 days are:

• All schools and educational institutes will only hold online classes.

• All entertainment venues, including pubs, bars, karaoke outlets, massage parlours, etc, will be closed until further notice.

• Any gathering exceeding 50 people must seek official approval.

• All banquets or gatherings must be cancelled or postponed.

• People should avoid going outdoors and work from home as much as possible.

• Interprovincial travel is still allowed, but travellers must check measures put in place in the province of their destination.

In the red zone

• Restaurants can serve food until 9pm and provide takeaways until 11pm. No alcohol can be served.

• Department stores and shopping malls can be opened until 9pm. Operators must refrain from holding any activities or promotions that encourage crowds.

• Supermarket, flea markets, fresh markets, convenience stores and similar places of business can be opened until 11pm and reopen at 4am.

• Stadiums and gyms can open until 9pm and competitions can be held without an audience.

In the orange area

• Restaurants can serve diners until 11pm, but no alcohol allowed.

• Department stores and shopping malls can be opened until 9pm. Operators must refrain from holding any activities or promotions that encourage crowds.

Man, 38, becomes first fatality in Thong Lor cluster

A 38-year-old man in Tak province has become the first person to die of Covid-19 spread by the Thong Lor cluster, the province’s Public Health Office said on Friday.

According to reports, the patient visited Krystal Club in Bangkok’s Thong Lor area on March 19. Krystal Club has been identified as one of the hotspots behind Thailand’s third wave of infections.

The patient, who worked as a programmer, died at Somdej Phrachao Taksin Maharat Hospital in Tak’s Muang district. He was also suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity, said Public Health Office deputy Ramet Wongvilairat.

“His symptoms improved after he was admitted to hospital on April 4, but then they deteriorated due to high potassium levels in the blood,” he said.

On April 1, the patient drove from Bangkok to Chaiyaphum. On April 2, he drove to Tak and visited his wife at Somdej Phrachao Taksin Maharat Hospital.

On April 4, he took a Covid-19 test at Somdej Phrachao Taksin Maharat Hospital after developing a cough, sore throat and muscle pain. He tested positive and was hospitalised the same afternoon.

A total of 20 Covid-19 cases, mostly linked to the Thong Lor cluster, have been discovered in Tak so far. The patients are being treated at the Mae Sot and Somdej Phrachao Taksin Maharat hospitals, said Ramet.

Govt mulls allowing provinces to impose curfews

NationalApr 16. 2021

By THE NATION

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) will discuss this evening (Friday) whether to give provincial governors the power to impose local curfews to combat the spread of Covid-19, said Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.

The meeting will be chaired by Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha.

“The by-province curfew measure was used in Samut Sakhon during the second-wave outbreak, when the governor imposed an 11pm-5am curfew throughout the province,” said Anutin. “We will let the governors decide the suitable period of curfew, as they are the ones who understand the situation in their areas,” he added.

Meanwhile, the National Communicable Disease Committee has also proposed extending the red zone of highest controls to 18 provinces, and the orange zone (high controls) to 56 provinces, said Anutin.

He added that interprovincial travel is still permitted unless a governor orders a travel ban to contain the outbreak.

Thailand registered the fourth day in a row of record new Covid-19 cases on Friday, with 1,582 fresh infections recorded over the previous 24 hours.

Dams, some Egat-run tourist facilities nationwide closed until April 30

NationalApr 16. 2021

By The Nation

Dams and some facilities nationwide under supervision of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) were temporarily closed in a bid to contain the spread of Covid-19.

Egat’s assistant governor of renewable power plants, Prasert Inthap, said dams, viewpoints, golf courses, fitness centres and resorts were being closed until April 30 this year.

He said the move would be implemented with the exception of Srinagarind Dam, which will be temporarily closed from April 19 and Ratchaprapa Dam, which tourists can travel to in line with Surat Thani’s policy.

“Restaurants at the dams are still being opened for tourists who have booked in advance and weren’t from risky areas,” he said.

He added that Egat had strictly followed the Public Health Ministry’s measures to contain the spread of Covid-19, such as screening visitors’ body temperature at tourist points, setting up hand sanitising and Thai Chana checkpoints, and cleaning areas visited by lots of tourists with disinfectants periodically.

“Tourists are required to wear face mask, maintain distance, check body temperature and strictly comply with officials’ recommendations,” he added.
