Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai on Friday urged government officials in border provinces to prepare camps for an influx of refugees from Myanmar.

However, Don said he hoped that unrest in Myanmar would not trigger a mass exodus of its citizens to Thailand.

He told press he had discussed the Myanmar crisis with Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha after Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting.

“We hope the unrest in Myanmar will be ended as soon as possible to benefit Thailand and other Asean countries,” he said. Meanwhile the Thai government would continue to monitor the situation, Don added.

Local media and agencies report that at least 220 civilians have been killed and 2,000 arrested since junta forces launched a brutal crackdown following the February 1 military coup that ousted Aung San Suu Kyi’s elected government. Eight more killings were reported on Friday.

The Criminal Court handed prison sentences to 15 players, referees and officials on Thursday, in Thai football’s first case of match-fixing since the league was established 25 years ago.

Among the defendants slapped with sentences of between one and five years was a Fifa-certified Thai referee.

The case stems from four Thai League matches played in 2017 by Si Sa Ket FC, Nakhon Ratchasima Mazda FC, and Rajchanavy FC, in which fans and media noticed unusually high scoring toward the end of the games.

Somyot Phumphanmuang, Thai Football Association president and former national police chief, vowed to bring everyone involved in throwing the matches to justice.

Somyot called in Chakthip Chaijinda, his successor as national police chief, to investigate the case. Over 30 police investigators began collecting evidence from the association and the clubs involved.

On November 21, 2017 the association held a press conference to announce that at least 12 culprits had been identified in the match-fixing scandal. Another four suspects were added to the list after further investigation in 2018, but prosecutors decided to dismiss one suspect and file charges against 15.

Thailand passed the Professional Sports Promotion Act in 2013. The law stipulates that match-fixing in professional sports is punishable with up to 10 years in jail and/or a fine of between Bt200,000 and Bt600,000.

Before this case, there was no record of legal cases involving match-fixing in other sports besides boxing in Thailand.

All 15 defendants were granted bail and plan to lodge appeals against the verdict with a higher court. However, this case is still a landmark in Thai footballing history, with the Football Association taking swift action against match-fixing suspects to restore fan’s confidence in the beautiful game.

In the next phase of relaxation, from July 1 until September 30, quarantined people will be able to eat in the hotel’s dining hall and use spa and massage service.

From October 1, only travellers from countries specified in the watchlist by the national commutable disease committee will have to quarantine. However, quarantine measures will change to close observation, using technology to help manage and track the travellers.

Businessmen who make a short visit from April 1 until September 30 can now use the hotel meeting room but still have to follow Public Health Ministry’s guidelines and conditions.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is continuing work on improving the scenery of other canals in Bangkok after its success with the now-famous Khlong Ong Ang.

Khlong Ong Ang in Bangkok’s Phra Nakhon district won the 2020 Asian Townscape Award for Landscape Improvement Project last Saturday.

Khlong Ong Ang walking street, which opens daily, features music performances, street art exhibition and a variety of products and street foods from local retailers. Visitors also can enjoy a kayaking trip in the canal and appreciate the city landscape on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 4pm until 10pm. Admission is free.

Bangkok governor Pol General Aswin Kwanmuang said the BMA had so far cooperated with related authorities on improving canals’ landscape in a bid to demonstrate their beauty and improve people’s quality of life.

He added that canals located near tourist attractions, such as Bangkok Yai, Phadung Krung Kasem, Khu Muang Doem, Lat Phrao, Chong Nonsi and Chalermchai Pattana are under landscape improvement.

“We will improve canals’ landscape in line with each area’s identity, by growing and trimming trees and repairing architecture, as well as cooperating with the public sector in maintaining water resources and promoting tourism,” he said.
