Samut Sakhon Governor Veerasak Vichitsangsri has greatly recovered from Covid-19 and is now in the process of slowly rehabilitating his lungs and muscles, his daughter Namwan posted on her Facebook on Friday.

Veerasak tested positive in December and has since been hospitalised, while his province has become the country’s hot spot in the second Covid-19 wave, with a total 16,449 positive cases reported so far.

“My father is able to eat and talk like a normal person, but he gets tired after 5-10 minutes as his immune system has not recovered fully,” wrote Namwan.

“Doctors are still concerned about reinfection, so they have prohibited visitors at the moment.

“Doctors said he would need to stay at Siriraj Hospital for at least two weeks, and if his health improves they would allow him to recuperate at home,” she added.

A high-tech innovation is restoring traditional tranquillity to popular tourist destination Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. The ear-splitting noise of diesel engines is being replaced by the gentle hum of electric longtail boats, ferrying passengers through the market in Ratchaburi province.

The idea for longtail EVs was hatched in December 2019 after people complained of the noise and pollution created by car engines that propel traditional longtail boats.

Thai e-vehicle manufacturer Sakun C Innovation Co was invited to find a way of making the traditional boats less noisy and more eco-friendly.

On Friday, Marine Department chief Witthaya Yamuang inspected the results – three prototype EV longtail boats.

Two of the prototypes have wooden hulls while the third is aluminium. The boats will run for 10 kilometres and take four hours to charge at home. Their maximum speed is about 20 kilometres per hour.

Witthaya said the department aims to produce another 8-10 electric longtail boats to support community tourism.

Nearly 1,800 health professionals working in six districts that have high risk of infection have been inoculated with the Covid-19 vaccine since March 1, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) reported on Friday.

The BMA has provided inoculation to 1,790 healthcare personnel through 13 private hospitals, three public hospitals and seven public health service centres in Bang Khun Thian, Bang Bon, Nong Khaem, Bang Khae, Phasi Charoen and Jomthong districts.

BMA deputy governor Pol Lt-General Sophon Phisutthiwong said earlier this week that Bangkok had received 66,000 doses of Sinovac vaccine allotted by the government and had started inoculating the target group since Monday.

Medical professionals are the first group to receive the vaccine, while the second group will be public health volunteers who have high risk of contacting infected patients during proactive testing missions, and the third target group will be those who have chronic diseases and are therefore more vulnerable if they contract Covid-19.

The BMA also reported that of the 1,790 persons vaccinated, 11 persons were found to have non-severe side-effects, while no severe side-effects had been reported so far.

Authorities are investigating a case of marine vandalism in Prachuap Khiri Khan province after discovering a reef of protected staghorn corals has been plundered by thieves.

Alerted by the Ban Pak Klong marine conservation group, officials from Ao Siam National Park went to inspect the coral reef colony off Koh Talu Bang in Saphan Noi district.

They found more than 60 per cent of the staghorn coral had been destroyed or damaged. Path Intarapairoj, incoming Ao Siam National Park chief, said they are now seeking the culprit.
