BMA braces for upcoming summer storm

NationalMar 01. 2021

By The Nation

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has told relevant agencies to monitor summer storms from March 2-4 after the Thailand Meteorological Department notified on Saturday that summer had arrived.

Bangkok Governor Aswin Kwanmuang issued orders to prepare for the summer storm after the weather department alerted on Saturday that Thailand would be under the storm’s influence from Monday until March 4 due to the moderate high-pressure system from China over southern China, which will reach the Northeast of Thailand today. The lower North, Central, and East, including Bangkok and its vicinities, will be affected by the storm from March 2.

Aswin said that relevant officers were preparing to deal with the situation, especially the health bureau, which will promote knowledge and advice to people about summer healthcare particularly in the risk group, including young children, the elderly, people with congenital disease, and those who work under the sun.

The Drainage Bureau has prepared the drainage system to cope with the rain situation from the influence of the summer storm that may affect many Bangkok areas, including monitoring the rain situation and alerting people through various channels.

Baht weakens on increased investor speculation

NationalMar 01. 2021

By THE NATION

The baht opened at 30.42 to the US dollar on Monday, weakening from the last close of 30.35.

The Thai currency is likely to move between 30.35 and 30.50 on Monday and between 30.20 and 30.70 this week, said Jitipol Puksamatanan, the head of SCB Securities’ Easy Invest team.

He explained that the baht had previously weakened from fluctuation in the financial market, as well as the decreased price of gold.

However, Jitipol believed that the latest movement of baht related mainly to investor speculation.

Meanwhile, Thailand’s economy had a trade surplus, and foreign exchange reserves were high.

He predicted that the baht would recover, while the dollar will stop strengthening. The baht will tend to stop at 30 per US dollar at the end of this quarter, he added.

This week, Jitipol suggested that investors should monitor the Fed’s opinion on increased US bond yields, as well as the country’s financial policies.

This would relax the market and at the same time weaken the dollar.

Also, several countries in Europe will lift their lockdown. The euro will strengthen from this situation.

Majority in opinion poll oppose penalising MPs who defy party position

NationalFeb 28. 2021

By The Nation

A majority of people in an opinion poll opposed punishment for members of Parliament who do not follow their party’s position in voting on issues.

The survey carried out by the National Institute of Development Administration surveyed 1,310 people between February 24-26.

The respondents were asked how parties should deal with rebel MPs during voting in a no-confidence debate.

More than half — 52.67 per cent– said that punishment should not be allowed because it is an individual’s right to express different opinions. It is not always necessary to follow party resolutions. Around 45.80 per cent said that there should be a punishment because MPs have the duty to represent the people, and they have to vote or follow the party’s resolution, not just their own opinion.

Some 1.53 per cent said that they were not interested in the question

When those who backed action against defiant MPs were asked what punishment would be appropriate:

34.34 per cent said they should not be fielded as an MP candidate by the party in the next election;

26 per cent said they should be banned from engaging in political activities within the party or in government;

17.33 per cent said they should be laid off from all positions in the party and government;

16.33 per cent said they should be expelled from the party;

4.67 per cent said they should be forced to resign from the party;

1.33 per cent suggested other approaches, include being warned.

The respondents were also asked about punishment for opposition MPs whose votes did not meet the resolution of the coalition opposition:

53.82 per cent said there should be no punishment because individual opinions must be respected. Equal rights and freedoms could mean having a different opinion.

43.82 per cent said sanctions should be imposed for failing to comply with party resolutions and being unfair to alliance partners;

2.36 per cent did not answer.

As for punishment for radical opposition MPs:

34.34 per cent said the party should not field them as an MP candidate in the next election;

26 per cent said they should be banned from engaging in political activities within the party or government;

17.33 per cent said they should be taken off all positions in the party and government;

16.33 per cent said they should be fired from the party;

4.67 per cent said they should be forced to resign from the party;

1.33 per cent stated other approaches, including a warning.

Jirayu Ekkul, a wildlife photographer, explained that Mae Thong Dee had a ripped dorsal fin and severe eye injuries, adding that he and his team had been closely monitoring this whale’s behaviour.

“We found Mae Thong Dee and her baby whales about two hours after taking a ship to the Gulf of Thailand. It may have been our destiny to meet these whales,” he said.

He added that two years ago everyone was doubtful how Mae Thong Dee was going to survive after an incident in which she suffered an injury to her eyes. Now their doubts had been cleared.

“I finally realise why she ate so much and lived in the gulf for over nine months. It wanted to take care of its health to give birth to a baby whale,” he said, adding that he admired its maternal instinct.

The Bryde’s whale is a baleen whale, more specifically a rorqual belonging to the same group as blue whales and humpback whales.

They usually appear individually or in pairs, and occasionally in loose aggregations up to 20 animals around feeding areas. They are more active on the water surface than sei whales, especially in coastal waters.

Bryde’s whale is listed on Appendix II of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals. It is listed on Appendix II as it has an unfavourable conservation status or would benefit significantly from international cooperation organised by tailored agreements.

In addition, Bryde’s whale is covered by the Memorandum of Understanding for the Conservation of Cetaceans and Their Habitats in the Pacific Islands Region.
