Rafael Nadal has given one million euros ($1.14 million) to the victims of floods in his native Mallorca, the mayor of the affected town Mateu Puigros said on Thursday.

The incidents claimed 13 lives in October in the town that neighbours Nadal’s home of Manacor.

The 17-time Grand Slam winner had also made his tennis academy available for those impacted by the sudden downpour.

“In the name of the municipality and the residents especially those effected by the flood in October, we want to thank him for the sensitivity he has shown since the beginning and after what happened here in Sant Llorenc,” Puigros said in a video.

Exhausted Ariya afraid of letting down her legendary teammates

Chon Buri – World No 1 Ariya Jutanugarn is determined to overcome fitness issues and help Thailand to win the inaugural Amata Friendship Cup against Japan which kicks off this morning at the Amata Spring Country Club.

Thailand’s sporting superstar has been busy with non-stop commitments during the four weeks she has been back home and even had to spend a few days in hospital two weeks ago due to influenza. She and her sister Moriya only joined their teammates for belated practice on Wednesday’s afternoon.

Ariya, along with five other Thai women and six men, will take on their Japanese counterparts in foursomes and fourballs format today and tomorrow before the concluding singles on Sunday.

“I’m still OK and will give it a 100 per cent out there, especially since I am in the same team as Thai legends which gives me extra motivation,” said 10-time LPGA winner Ariya after practice round on Thursday.

“I feel quite excited with this format and a bit fearful I might be a burden if my partner is a legend.

“Teaming with any Thai legend will be an honour,” added Ariya ,whose high-profile playing partners include eight-time European Tour winner Thongchai Jaidee, 10-time Asian Tour victor Prayad Marksaeng and the current Thai No1 and world No38 Kiradech Aphibarnrat, the Kingdom’s first holder of a card to play on the world-leading PGA Tour.Although the hosts are also blessed to have other world-class stars such older sister Moriya Jutanugarn and Thidapa Suwannapura, each an LPGA victor this year, Ariya says she would never underestimate Japan, whose men’s team is led by world No 47 Satoshi Kodaira and the women by two-time LPGA winner Nasa Hataoka.

“You don’t know what’s going to happen in matchplay format as anyone can be on fire at any given day. I can’t say if we have the advantage but I can say we are a very strong team,” Ariya added.

According to Thai men’s captain Boonchu Ruangkit, Kiradech will be paired with Thai No 1 amateur Atthaya Thitikul in the foursomes this morning after which the remaining pairs will be revealed.

“I’ve never competed in this format before but I believe in the abilities of our female players. As for Atthaya Thitikul, she is the No 1 amateur in Thailand,” said Kiradech, who suggested that Ariya could strengthen her game even more by using the driver more.

“If she can use two-irons or three-woods and still be No 1, she could rule women’s golf for another five years by using the driver more,” he said.

Skipper Boonchu is somewhat concerned that exhaustion might take its toll on the Jutanugarn sisters but is still confident they can pull it off.

“Ariya and Moriya have been very busy and have had little time to practice,” he admitted. “But I still believe in their competence. Some of our players are stronger than the Japanese teams while the rest are quite close. I’m confident we have the edge a bit but we won’t underestimate Japan.”

The visitors players are also unfamiliar with the mixed-team format and say they’ll need time to adjust.

“This will be the first time the men’s and women’s have competed together. So we don’t what to expect but it will be fun,” said Japanese men’s captain Joe Ozaki.

ASIAN TOUR AND HABITAT FOR HUMANITY INDONESIA BUILD HOMES TOGETHER IN SENTUL

Jakarta –  Celebrating hope, joy and giving, Asian Tour golfers and staff spent a day to volunteer and build homes with Habitat for Humanity Indonesia and future homeowners in Sentul village, Bojong Koneng in Bogor to cap the successful Indonesian Masters.

“It has been a meaningful year for the Asian Tour in 2018. As we celebrate another season of success, we are happy to see that many stakeholders within the Asian Tour family made an effort to give back to society through our partnership with Habitat for Humanity.

Through this partnership, our objective is to help Habitat for Humanity expand their brand awareness by garnering support from the golfing community to provide more families with access to affordable housing.

Over the past 12 months, players and staff have also volunteered their time on-site in India, Thailand and now Indonesia, which are some of the places that we host tournaments in. We are proud to be able to pledge our support to Habitat for Humanity,” said Cho Minn Thant, Chief Operating Officer of the Asian Tour.

George Gandranata, Berry Henson, Elki Kow, Wolmer Murillo, Fajar Win Nuryanto and Mitchell Slorach comprise the Asian Tour golfers who are leading the build. Asian Tour management and staff also worked together with Habitat for Humanity Indonesia ambassadors, and families in building three homes.

Rick Hathaway, Asia-Pacific vice president of Habitat for Humanity International said: “We are grateful for the strong partnership with Asian Tour through 2018. The build with Habitat families in Sentul marks Asian Tour’s continuous support. Thanks to the passion and commitment of golfers and staff, we can move closer to our vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live.”

During the build, Asian Tour volunteers were able to meet and work with future homeowners Enoh, Bai and Aben. Their families have been living in run-down bamboo houses that have leaky roofs and poor lighting. With the support of Habitat Indonesia and Asian Tour, the three families will be able to create a better future through secure and stable homes.

In Sentul, where communities are among the millions of Indonesians living in poverty, low-income housing are built by the families themselves often using makeshift and low-quality materials. Sustainable housing solutions that build families’ and communities’ resilience are critical in disaster-prone Indonesia where vulnerable families are at risk of losing scarce assets and falling deeper into poverty.

Supporting Habitat for Humanity initiatives help overcome Indonesia’s housing gaps. Last week, Olympic golf champion and world number two Justin Rose donated US$50,000 to support Habitat Indonesia’s disaster response in tsunami and earthquake-hit areas in Sulawesi and Lombok.

Generous contributions from Asian Tour golfers also help make a difference. Habitat ambassadors Danny Masrin and Berry Henson raised funds together with their peers and supporters through the #BirdiesforHabitat challenge at the Indonesian Masters.

Meanwhile, India’s Shubhankar Sharma topped this year’s Habitat for Humanity Standings. The adoption of the name Habitat for Humanity Standings for this year’s Asian Tour season-long Order of Merit rankings is a meaningful reminder that housing is a top priority that can empower people to build better lives and families.

As Asian Tour’s sustainable development partner, Habitat for Humanity was able to bring the need for decent housing closer to the hearts of the golfing community in the region and the rest of the world. The partnership is instrumental in raising resources, awareness and in mobilizing volunteers for the cause of decent, secure housing in India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

Marking its 35th anniversary in the Asia-Pacific region in 2018, Habitat for Humanity continues to draw on the strength of partnerships such as with Asian Tour to build strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter.

Tokyo –  ONE Championship™ (ONE) has just announced the first six bouts scheduled for ONE: A NEW ERA, which is set to take place Sunday, 31 March at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan.

Reigning ONE Women’s Strawweight World Champion “The Panda” Xiong Jing Nan of China will defend her title against ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion “Unstoppable” Angela Lee of Singapore. ONE Middleweight World Champion Aung La “The Burmese Python” N Sang of Myanmar will defend his title against Ken Hasegawa of Japan. ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard “Landslide” Folayang will defend his title against Shinya “Tobikan Judan” Aoki of Japan.

Tickets for ONE: A NEW ERA go on sale 20 December at 6PM JST and is available on LINE Ticket athttps://ticket.line.me/sp/ONEChampionship, Kyodo Tokyo, Ticket Pia, Lawson Ticket, and E-plus from 27 January 2019.

Also seeing action on the card are new ONE Championship athletes Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson and Eddie “The Underground King” Alvarez. In addition, ONE Championship will officially kick off the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix with a series of compelling bouts.

Reigning ONE Women’s Strawweight World Champion “The Panda” Xiong Jing Nan and ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion “Unstoppable” Angela Lee have been on a collision course ever since the Chinese hero entered the organization in December 2017.

The two martial artists sit at the top of their weight classes, and each has dominated their respective divisions. However, with Lee moving up in weight to challenge Xiong for the strawweight crown, the Singaporean has the chance to become the first two-division women’s World Champion in ONE Championship history. It certainly will not be easy, as “The Panda” represents the toughest challenge in Lee’s career.

Reigning ONE Middleweight and Light Heavyweight World Champion Aung La “The Burmese Python” N Sang is the most iconic sports superstar to hail from Myanmar.

His first encounter with Japan’s Ken Hasegawa in June 2018 was a five-round thriller of epic proportions, one which Aung La N Sang won in the final moments of the heated battle. The match is considered the “Greatest Bout In ONE Championship History” and was also awarded “Bout Of The Year” honors at the 2018 Global Martial Arts Awards for its nonstop action and dramatic finish. Aung La N Sang and Hasegawa will meet once again at ONE: A NEW ERA in a highly-anticipated rematch that is sure to produce fireworks.

Reigning ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard “Landslide” Folayang of the Philippines is set to face Japanese martial arts legend and former World Champion Shinya “Tobikan Judan” Aoki in a long-awaited rematch.

In November 2016, Folayang captured the title from Aoki via third-round TKO, but surrendered the belt to Martin Nguyen a year later. This past November, the Filipino reclaimed the crown with a dominant five-round unanimous decision over Singaporean knockout artist Amir Khan. Meanwhile, Aoki is riding a three-bout win streak, having finished Rasul Yakhyaev and Ev Ting by submission, and stopping Shannon Wiratchai by TKO. These three wins have elevated the Japanese icon to another shot at the ONE Lightweight World Title, as well as a chance to defeat his former conqueror.

In addition to the three aforementioned bouts, multiple-time World Champions Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson and Eddie “The Underground King” Alvarez are scheduled to make their first appearances inside the ONE Championship cage.

Alvarez joined ONE Championship in October, taking his stellar career back to Asia where he first made a name for himself. A multiple-time lightweight World Champion, Alvarez seeks to become a ONE World Champion but will have to go through a bevy of top lightweight contenders in order to achieve his goal. In his first outing for the promotion, Alvarez will face top lightweight contender Timofey Nastyukhin of Russia.

Johnson, meanwhile, is widely considered the pound-for-pound best mixed martial artist in the history of the sport. He joined ONE Championship in late October and, alongside Alvarez, appeared in Singapore the following week for the Global Martial Arts Summit, Global Martial Arts Awards, and ONE: HEART OF THE LION. Johnson’s opponent for his first ONE Championship bout will be Japan’s Yuya “Little Piranha” Wakamatsu.

The ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix will commence at ONE: A NEW ERA. Initial bouts for the tournament will also be announced at a later date.

Also on the card is a ONE Super Series showdown between Muay Thai legend Yodsanklai IWE Fairtexand Dutch World Champion kickboxer Andy Souwer.

Yodsanklai is coming off a stunning performance in Kuala Lumpur at ONE: DESTINY OF CHAMPIONS. The martial arts veteran finished opponent Luis Regis with three rapid-fire uppercuts that drew a chorus of cheers from the crowd. Souwer, on the other hand, is one of the most internationally-renowned striking superstars ever to emerge from the Netherlands and is a two-time K1 World MAX World Champion and It’s Showtime 70MAX World Champion.

Japan’s netizens have flocked to the defence former adult movie actress Sola Aoi who announced her pregnancy on social media, prompting some to accuse her of selfishness as the child will be bullied because of Aoi’s previous career.

Sola Aoi took to Instagram to reveal she will be having a baby in May with her husband, the DJ Non, but clearly felt obliged in her blog to fend off criticisms she has faced both before and after the announcement.

Aoi, who starred in her first adult movie at the age of 18 in 2002, has received messages saying what a pity it will be for her children to live with her past. One poster on her blog commented on her “poor children” while another sent her a message saying she should not have a baby as the poster’s own mother had worked in the sex industry and that had caused her to have an unhappy childhood.

Now 35, Aoi stated in a recent post to her blog: “If you think the children of AV [adult video] actresses will definitely be bullied in the future, then that is more of a reflection of your core values.

“Of course it’s better not to do AV, but if you do AV it does not mean that you are unhappy,” she wrote. “My desire to have a child is the same as anyone else’s. Good relationships between parents and a child are not necessarily based on a parent’s profession. They are based on the child’s environment.”

My desire to have a child is the same as anyone else’s

Reiterating that her family had always supported her decisions, Aoi added that her parents were happy when she told them she was getting married and she is looking forward to giving them a grandchild.

Most of the commenters appeared to support Aoi’s actions. On the SoraNews24 site, one poster wrote: “Good on her – and if the kid gets bullied, well it just goes to show you how the parents of those kids are.”

John Tan wrote: “Bravo. Those making a big deal out of her being in AV should re-evaluate their own lives. She is not harming anyone, which is a great deal better than all those fraudsters, murderers, rapists and robbers out there.”

On the Japan Today forum, one poster wrote: “AV actress, religious virgin – we’re all human beings, all with the same rights. People who think they have grounds to criticise someone else for wanting to be a parent are the ones deserving of criticism.”

That sentiment was echoed in the message: “Good for her! Glad to see she doesn’t let the opinions of others guide her.” Another added, “Can you imagine how better life was before hatred saturated the internet? Good on her and she’s a far better human being than her detractors. Wishing her the very best.”

At Jesus’s birthplace, an app is born to ease crowds

Bethlehem, Palestinian Territories – Bethlehem is buzzing, with more tourists expected this Christmas than have visited the Biblical city in years, causing the kind of problem that modern technology was almost born to deal with.

Such are the crowds at the church built on the site where Jesus is believed to have been born that the authorities are planning to introduce an advance reservation system through an app.

The app, which will be introduced early next year, is aimed at ensuring a regular flow of tourists at the Church of the Nativity, where at busy times visitors wait hours to see the underground grotto where Christians believe Jesus was born in a manger.

Details of the app, which will be in English to start, are still being worked out.

One priest said it would only apply to tour groups visiting the site in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, but the Palestinian tourism ministry said it would be for everyone.

While there are concerns visits could become unnecessarily complicated, the three churches that share control of the site — the Catholics, Greek Orthodox and the Armenian Church — say such an app is needed.

“There are times when for us there are specific prayers, celebrations, or masses, or with all the sects praying,” Orthodox priest Issa Thaljieh said outside the church.

“So of course there is a huge squeeze. With the app, everyone will know what time to enter and which groups are there, so it will become more organised.”

The first church was built on the site in the fourth century, though it was replaced after a fire in the sixth century. Its mosaics were recently restored in a major project.

Palestinian deputy tourism minister Ali Abu Srour said the app would also provide information about the church.

“We are going digital with this issue,” he told AFP in his office in Bethlehem.

– Record year –

Barbora Salyova, a 29-year-old tourist visiting Israel and Jordan from Slovakia, said the app could be useful for pilgrims like herself.

“This is a step we definitely planned to make,” she said. “We also came for religious reasons so this was an automatic stop.”

Tourism in Bethlehem is enjoying its best season in years, with hotels reporting especially high occupancy rates for the Christmas period, said Elias Al-Arja, chairman of the Hotels Association Palestine.

“We had occupancy rates of 74 or 72 percent in 2018,” he said, adding that it is expected to rise later in December.

In total around 2.8 million tourists have visited the Palestinian territories this year, up from 2.5 million last year, according to the tourism ministry.

Abu Srour said the primary reason is a decrease in violence in Jerusalem and the West Bank this year.

The ministry has reached out to new tourists in locations across the globe, he said.

Israel is also enjoying record tourism figures and many visitors take day trips to Bethlehem and other West Bank sites from Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and elsewhere in the Jewish state.

Urgent : Myanmar forces conduct ‘clearance operations’ after two killed in Rakhine state

Yangon – Myanmar forces are conducting new rounds of “clearance operations” in conflict-hit Rakhine state after four local Buddhists were attacked and two killed, the commander-in-chief’s office said Thursday, with one of the incidents blamed on Rohingya Muslims.

The violence occurred around the evening of December 17 along Pyu Ma creek in northern Rakhine state’s Maungdaw township, the same area where forces waged a bloody crackdown against the Rohingya last year.

More than 720,000 Rohingya fled to Bangladesh after Myanmar launched clearance operations in August 2017, and UN investigators want the country’s top brass prosecuted for genocide for alleged abuses carried out during the expulsion.

Myanmar said it was defending itself against Rohingya militants who attacked police posts and has denied almost all claims of atrocities.

But the commander-in-chief Min Aung Hlaing’s office said in the statement posted to his official website Thursday that security forces were active again and had been carrying out “area clearance operations along Pyu Ma Creek.”

The post said the activity was sparked after two ethnic Rakhine Buddhist men did not return from fishing and were later found on the creek bank with their throats slit.

On the same day two members of another ethnic Buddhist minority were attacked while fishing along the creek by six men “speaking Bengali language,” but they escaped and were treated at a local hospital.

The post said authorities did not know the identities of the attackers.

Myanmar does not recognise the Rohingya as one of its national races and refers to them as Bengali to falsely imply they are newly arrived immigrants from Bangladesh.

Tensions are high in northern Rakhine as the government seeks to kickstart a repatriation process but Rohingya in Bangladesh have refused to take part without being guaranteed rights, citizenship and safety.

The Rohingya still in Rakhine are increasingly isolated, and several boats full of men, women and children trying to flee the state have been stopped in recent weeks and turned around.

The minority has long been persecuted and subjected to apartheid-like conditions in Rakhine, with lack of access to healthcare and freedom of movement curtailed.

Many fear that in their absence Myanmar is changing the landscape of their former homes for good, erasing all signs of their local history.

Police have sent papers to prosecutors on a Thai woman suspected of violating immigration law by illegally brokering Thai nationals to massage parlors in South Korea, the Justice Ministry said Thursday.

The special investigation team at the Korea Immigration Service has arrested and recommended an indictment against the 30-year-old woman.

With the help of a South Korean accomplice, she introduced dozens of Thai women, who entered South Korea on tourist visas, to massage parlors from September last year to May this year and took tens of millions won as fees for the brokering, the ministry said.

Whenever the woman introduced a masseuse to a massage shop, she was paid 1.5 million won (around $1,333) from the masseuse and 500,000 won to 1.1 million won from the shop.

The Thai is also suspected of having arranged a fake marriage with a South Korean man in his 50s to allow her to remain in South Korea over the long term. She paid the man about 8 million won for the marriage.

The police have sent the two Korean accomplices to prosecution without detention.

According to the ministry’s statistics, the number of Thai nationals staying in South Korea came to 194,000 as of November, about a two-fold increase from the 101,000 recorded in late 2016.

Under the visa arrangements, Thai visitors are allowed to enter South Korea with a maximum stay of 90 days per visit without a visa.

Legal cloud descends on Cabinet revelry at pricey Phalang Pracharat fundraiser.

LEGAL QUESTIONS arose yesterday over how Cabinet ministers and civil servants were able to afford seats at an extravagant fundraising dinner run by the pro-junta Phalang Pracharat Party on Wednesday.

The law on political parties prohibits state agencies from giving them donations of any kind or participating in their activities.

Each table at Wednesday’s feast cost Bt3 million and several were reserved in the names of the Finance Ministry and state agencies including the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

Four tables, worth a combined Bt12 million, were reserved in the name of Phalang Pracharat secretary-general Sonthirat Sonthijirawong, who is commerce minister in the military-led government.

Twenty tables – another Bt60 million in the party’s coffers – were reserved for the Finance Ministry and three for the TAT.

Finance permanent secretary Prasong Poonthanet insisted yesterday that no state funds had been expended.

“We couldn’t possibly use state budget to buy seats at the banquet – it’s illegal,” he said. “Plus, as a state agency, we are non-partisan.”

The Nation could not reach anyone at the TAT for comment.

Attending Wednesday’s feast with Sonthirat were his fellow Cabinet members Uttama Sawanayon, Kobsak Pootrakool and Suvit Maesincee.

None of the ministers spoke onstage, despite initial plans to have them offer remarks.

Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam, who serves as the government’s chief legal expert, had advised against ministers attending the event from giving speeches because that would be breaking the law. Violating the law could get them banned from politics for five years, he warned.

Anti-corruption activist Veera Somkwamkid said yesterday the National Anti-Corruption Commission should determine how many active civil servants attended the fund-raiser and how they obtained tickets.

“If somebody paid for them, they should be scrutinised for illegally receiving a gift worth more than Bt3,000. And if they paid for themselves, they should be scrutinised for being ‘unusually rich’,” Veera said.

Former election commissioner Somchai Srisutthiyakorn, now a member of the Democrat Party, urged the Election Commission to investigate the banquet, saying there could be legal consequences.

The Phalang Pracharat “One United Thailand” event featured 200 banquet tables and was aimed at raising around Bt600 million for the pro-junta party.

Deputy party leader Nattapol Teepsuwan said yesterday the actual take was nearly Bt650 million, against an outlay of Bt3 million.

For their contributions, attendees dined on rocket salad with prawns, smoked salmon, US scallops and avocado, shrimp ravioli, saikyo miso fillet of snow fish and, at the end, raspberry white chocolate and pralines.

Apart from the Cabinet members who are also registered party executives, guests included businessmen, celebrities and fellow influential politicians Somsak Thepsutin, Suriya Juangroongruangkit, Suwat Liptapanlop, Warathep Rattanakorn and Nikorn Chamnong.

Providing the entertainment were Tata Young, Radklao Amaradis, Koh Mr Saxman and the band Nuvo.

It was the biggest fund-raiser so far staged by any political parties during the just-started campaign season.

Another pro-junta party, Action Coalition for Thailand (ACT), held a bash on Tuesday but raised only about a third of what Phalang Pracharat pocketed.

ACT treasurer Jutathat Laothammatas announced yesterday that its dinner raised Bt234 million with 234 tables priced at Bt1 million apiece.
