Meghan presents fashion award to wedding dress designer Waight Keller

GIVENCHY’S ARTISTIC director Clare Waight Keller on Monday received the British Designer of the Year in

Womenswear award from Meghan Markle, whose dress she designed for her wedding to Prince Harry.

“It is such a pleasure to be here celebrating British fashion,” Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, said at the star

-studded annual Fashion Awards at London’s Albert Hall.

Givency’s British fashion designer Clare Waight Keller poses with her award for British designer of the year Womenswear during the British Fashion Awards 2018 in London.

The former US actress, who is pregnant, praised the “vision”, “creativity” and also “the incredible kindness” of

Waight Keller.

The two women met in early 2018, before the designer created the dress worn by Meghan for her wedding

to Harry on May 19.

The British Fashion Awards also recognised Vivienne Westwood, winner of the award for positive change, for

her commitment to the environment.

The 77-year-old high priestess of punk took the opportunity to denounce the “rotten financial system” which

the dame said was “the cause of all our problems”.

A long-time political campaigner, she also took aim at French President Emmanuel Macron who recently

cancelled fuel tax increases in the face of the “yellow vest” protests.

The model of the year award went to 17yearold Kaia Gerber.

“This tax hurts the poor more than anybody,” Westwood said, adding “he’s not thinking that he has already

given all these tax breaks to the rich people. So of course everybody is going to be annoyed.”

The model of the year award went to 17-year-old Kaia Gerber, following in the footsteps of her mother,

former supermodel Cindy Crawford.

“It’s such an honour,” said the young American, on the verge of tears. “I have just a small role in making a

creative vision come to life but I’m so beyond grateful to be a part of it.”

Among the other awards, Italian fashion house Gucci was named brand of the year and Italian Pierpaolo

Piccioli, artistic director of Valentino, won the best designer award.

Surviving bleached barrier coral “more resilient to heat”, experts find

CORALS ON Australia’s Great Barrier Reef that survived bleaching from rising sea temperatures were more resistant to another bout of hot conditions the following year, scientists said Tuesday, a “silver lining” for the embattled ecosystem.

The 2,300-kilometre Unesco World Heritage-listed reef off Australia’s northeastern coast was hit by back-to-back bleaching events in 2016 and 2017.

Bleaching occurs when abnormal environmental conditions, such as warmer sea temperatures, cause corals to expel tiny photosynthetic algae, draining them of their colour. Corals can recover if the water temperature drops and the algae are able to recolonise them.

A dead and eroding section of reef following back-to-back bleaching events.

Swathes of coral died or were damaged in the unprecedented successive events, particularly the more heat-susceptible branching corals that are shaped like tables.

But Professor Terry Hughes of James Cook University, who has been leading the surveys of bleached corals, found in the latest study, published in Nature Climate Change, that the response of the reef was different between the two years.

“We were astonished to find less bleaching in 2017, because the temperatures were even more extreme than the year before,” Hughes said.

The northern part of the reef, which was worst-affected in 2016, bleached “much less” in 2017 even though some of the reefs underwent similar levels of heat stress in both summers.

In the central regions, the levels of bleaching for both years were observed to be the same, even though the heat exposure was higher in 2017, the researchers said.

Meanwhile, in the southern region – the least-affected – corals that suffered minor bleaching in the first year showed no bleaching in the second.

“It looks like the history of their experience in year one has toughened them up so that they’ve acclimatised to moderate levels in year two of heat exposure … It’s something of a silver lining.”

Hughes said it was too early to say whether the reef could be hit by another bleaching event in early 2019, after a spring heatwave in adjacent Queensland state.

Global coral reefs risk catastrophic die-offs if Earth’s average surface temperature increases two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, earlier research has shown.

Coral reefs make up less than one per cent of Earth’s marine environment, but are home to an estimated 25 per cent of ocean life, acting as nurseries for many species of fish.

Disaster in the making

Fighting climate change in the shadow of Mount Everest

FORMED IN the shadow of Mount Everest, the turquoise depths of Nepal’s Imja glacial lake would be a breathtaking miracle of nature to behold – were they not a portent of catastrophic floods.

Scientists warn that as climate change causes Himalayan glaciers to melt at an alarming rate, lakes like Imja could swell further and eventually collapse, triggering a terrifying deluge in Nepal, an impoverished nation at the mercy of a warming planet.

Those tasked with staving off disaster fear a “glacial lake outburst flood” – sending torrents of water, mud and rock hurtling downstream– could reach as far as Nepal’s densely populated southern plains, wiping out roads, vital energy projects and entire villages in its path.

Nepalese resident Ngawang Tshering Sherpa speaks during an interview with AFP in Shurke village in Solukhumbu district, some 140km northeast of Kathmandu.

“The risk is getting bigger,” says Arun Bhakta Shrestha, a climate scientist from the Kathmandu-based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development.

“These valleys are getting more populated, and infrastructure is developing rapidly.”

Hundreds of these lakes have appeared out of nowhere in the Himalayas in recent decades. A 2014 survey found one quarter of Nepal’s glaciers shrunk between 1977 and 2010, leaving behind 1,466 lakes.

Twenty-one have been identified as potentially dangerous and Nepal is racing to stay a step ahead of disaster, as global warming reshapes its mountain geography.

“As a small country, there is little we can do to stop what is happening to our glaciers,” says Rishi Ram Sharma, the director general at Nepal’s department of hydrology and meteorology.

“But we have to do what we can do to adapt and protect our people.”

Nepal’s fastest-growing lake, Imja once posed little threat to the villagers of Surke, a picturesque hamlet perched high in the Everest region.

In the early 1980s, the small lake at the foot of the Imja glacier at 5,010 metres was unremarkable.

But by 2014, it had more than tripled in size, contained only by a natural wall of debris, known as a moraine, which experts warned might not hold back the waters much longer.

A year later, when a massive earthquake struck Nepal, villagers in Surke assumed Imja had collapsed and would soon bury them all.

“We were terrified the quake would trigger a flood from the lake. All of us ran for safety,” villager Phudoma Sherpa recalls.

The lake miraculously held – sparing the 12,000 people directly in its path.

But the quake served as a wake-up call for policymakers.

Experts told the government that the gigantic glacial lakes were effectively a ticking time bomb.

With thousands of lives at stake, a massive undertaking began in late 2016 to drain Imja, which then measured 150 metres deep and two kilometres long.

Only the second operation of its kind in Nepal’s history, the project was a testament to the monumental challenge posed by glacial lakes, which are often remote and very difficult to access.

The Imja glacial lake controlled exit channel in the Everest region of the Solukhumbu district, some 140km northeast of Kathmandu.

Yaks and helicopters transported materials and teams of workers to the high-altitude region, where they toiled in thin air for six months until a drainage canal and early-warning system were installed.

The lake was lowered by 3.5 metres, draining more than five million cubic metres of water.

“Now, you have a channel. So any water that accumulates is drained out. That is how the risk is lowered,” explains Deepak KC, a climate change analyst from the United Nations Development Programme that backed the project.

The project cost $7.4 million (Bt57.4 million), an expensive commitment for a nation heavily reliant on its wealthier neighbours and on

international aid that contributed 12 per cent to its GDP in the last fiscal year.

In this case, more than 80 per cent of the money came from the Global Environment Facility, an international fund that provides green financing to developing countries. The rest was covered by UNDP.

With a paltry economy and 26 million people, Nepal has a tiny carbon footprint compared to its giant patrons China and India, major polluters that are home to a third of humanity.

Melting glaciers from climate change pose a huge threat to Nepal – as well as an undeserved extortionate burden, authorities say.

“We feel as if we have been penalised for the mistakes we never made,” President Bidya Devi Bhandari told world leaders at a climate summit in Poland this month.

“We are compelled to spend (a) significant amount of our national income in addressing disasters-induced problems.”

Nepal is asking the global community for further assistance to fight climate change.

For those no longer living under Imja’s shadow, the cost is well worth it.

“There was a sense of fear before, but we feel a lot safer now,” Sherpa says.

Ratchanok Intanon successful booked her fourth semi-final appearance in the BWF World Tour Finals with a straight-games victory over Canadian Michelle Li in the last round-robin in Guangzhou on Friday.

The world No8, after losing the second round-robin match of group B to Nozomi Okuhara on Wednesday, put on a masterclass of her all-round game to beat the Canadian at 21-13 21-12 in just 37 minutes.

It was a sweet revenge for Ratchanok, who was eliminated by Li from the All England Open in March.

With two wins in three matches, the Thai No1 finished second in the group behind leader Okuhara.

On Saturday she faces Sindhu V. Pusarla the winner of group A, while Okuhara will face  defending champion Akane Yamaguchi, the runner-up of A group.

Other Thais joining joining Ratchanok in the semi-finals were the mixed doubles pair of Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taeratanachai.

They lost their last group A round-robin match to Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong 21-9 21-8 but had already booked their semi-final spot by clinching second place to the Chinese pair, thanks to a win on Thursday over the British pair Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith of Greta Britain.

Tokyo, Singapore battle London to host ATP Finals

sports December 14, 2018 20:12

Tokyo and Singapore are battling London to host the ATP Finals from 2021 to 2025, the governing body of men’s tennis announced on Friday.

The shortlist for the end-of-season showpiece also includes the northern English city of Manchester and Italy’s Turin, while the London deal, which runs until 2020, could be extended.

The announcement of the candidates follows an extensive bid application process that began in August, in which more than 40 cities worldwide expressed an interest in hosting the event.

The final phase will see the ATP visit the cities, with a decision on the successful candidate to be made not before March 2019.

“The level of interest we have received worldwide throughout the bid application process reflects the rich heritage of this unique tournament, as well as the success of the event at the O2 since 2009,” said Chris Kermode, ATP executive chairman and president.

The ATP Finals were first held in Tokyo in 1970 and have been staged in some of the major cities around the world, including New York, Sydney, and Shanghai.

Its longest stay in a single venue was across 13 consecutive editions at Madison Square Garden from 1977 to 1989 but it has been held at London’s O2 arena since 2009 — drawing more than 250,000 fans annually.

The tournament has been won by many of the all-time greats, including Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

The season-ending event features only the world’s best eight qualified singles players and doubles teams following a year-long race to qualify.

Federer and Djokovic were split at last month’s tournament, won for the first time by Germany’s Alexander Zverev, over whether it should remain in London.

Federer, who has won the event a record six times, twice in London, said the British capital was the perfect fit.

But world number one Djokovic, who has won the event five times — four times in London — said he was in favour of moving the tournament around to promote the sport.

Wimbledon set for huge expansion

Wimbledon’s expansion plans have taken a huge step forward after the neighbouring golf club in London voted to sell its land.

The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) made an offer, reported to be £65 million ($82 million), to buy Wimbledon Park Golf Club’s land in a move that would see its estate roughly triple in size.

On Thursday, the All England club announced a vote had gone in its favour, and that the transfer, pending court approval, would go through on December 21.

A statement said it was “an important and exciting step” for the club and the future of Wimbledon.

“The decision of the Wimbledon Park Golf Club members to vote in favour of the acquisition offer is a hugely significant moment for the AELTC and the Championships,” said All England club chairman Philip Brook.

“We have achieved what we set out to do many months ago in having certainty in our planning for the future.”

Top of the wish list will be moving the Wimbledon qualifiers from their current Roehampton home to the main Wimbledon site, in keeping with the other three Grand Slam events.

“Over time, we plan to migrate the qualifying competition onto the land in order to elevate the event to world-class standards,” the statement added.

Jakarta –  Thai golfer Poom Saksansin took the led on the second round at the Indonesian Masters on Friday and broke his personal best record in a play suspended due to a fading light.

The 25-year-old Poom led the second round clubhouse with nine-under-par 63 to take lead in the second round of the BNI Indonesian Masters.

“I was just lucky today, I think I like this course. I won here before two years ago. My putting was very good today,” he said.

Poom, who won the 2016 the Indonesian Masters in 2016 compiled a two-day total of 14-under-par 130, lead his fellow Thai golfers Suradit Yongcharoenchai and Jakraphan Premsirigorn who scored a 66 and 65 respectively.

Jakraphan who missed the cut in six straight events before finishing tied-second in Pakistan in October said sharing second place gave him a much needed confidence in the tournament.

“I’m playing on this golf course for the first time and to be able to post a 65 today is a really good achievement,” he said.

Former US Open champion Justin Rose from England, whose first round on Thursday was disrupted by a severe thunderstorm, remains six shots back of Poom after he signed for a 68.

Rose was previously only one shot behind his compatriot John Catlin and South Korea’s Sungho Lee, who shared the lead at the Asian Tour’s season-ending event with opening rounds of 66 on Thursday.

“It was a bit more windy today. Today was tough to make birdies, I wasn’t quite on my game,” Rose said after the game.

Friday’s play was suspended due to fading light at 5.50pm local time, leaving 20 players having to return on Saturday morning to complete their rounds.

Vientiane

Laos and Thailand will target new heights in deepening their relations as they head toward setting up a strategic partnership for growth and sustainable development.

The direction of deepening relations and enhancement of bilateral cooperation was agreed on at the Third Lao-Thai Joint Cabinet Retreat (JCR) held in Vientiane yesterday co-chaired by Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith and his Thai counterpart General Prayut Chan-o-cha.

After a two-hour meeting, the two prime ministers witnessed the signing of seven documents; namely the record of the JCR, memorandums of understanding (MOUs) on cooperation in the justice and legal sector, in transport, education, natural resources and environment, immigration management, and a MOU on power trade between Electricite du Laos and Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand.

In the natural resources and environment sector, the two sides have agreed on setting up a botanic garden in Naxon village, Pakngum district, Vientiane.

After the signing ceremony, Prime Minister Thongloun and Prime Minister Prayut together held a news briefing where the Lao prime minister conveyed that the JRC was held under the atmosphere of brotherhood and he hoped the meeting would lead to the implementation of various agreements which would bring development to both nations along with mutual visits that protect their friendly ties.

As mentioned by Mr Thongloun, the sides appreciated the implementation of various agreements which they said had brought productive results.

Regarding the persistent deepening relations between both nations, the Lao PM said “Our two countries will move forward together to bring prosperity to people’s lives”.

At the retreat meeting, the two sides reviewed achievements of past bilateral cooperation in various fields.

The two sides praised the Joint Border Committee for their work in addressing border issues and the progress made in surveying as related units from both sides enhanced their efforts to finish the survey and marker installation for the land border by 2020 and water border by 2021.

The two sides confirmed to continue the promotion of economic, trade and investment cooperation in electric power and other sectors that have the potential for more growth to benefit both sides and strengthen the building of the Asean Community.

The two sides agreed on targeting the doubling of trade volume by 2021 compared to that of 2016.

Prime Minister Thongloun, representing the Lao government and people, expressed gratitude to His Majesty the Thai King and royalty, the royal government and Thai people for their assistance to Lao people, especially following the collapse of the Xepian-Xenamnoy Hydropower project saddle dam in Attapeu province’s Sanamxay district.

“Thailand was among the foreign countries which offered timely assistance for the rescue and relief from the disaster and helped to reduce the losses,” he said.

During the visit of the high-level Thai delegation to Laos, Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha represented the Thai government and people in handing over additional grants valued at 75 million baht or around 19.5 billion kip for the restoration of livelihoods in Attapeu province.

The Thai government and people also presented 55 million baht or around 14.6 billion kip for the development of the Lao Physical Education College in Thongpong village, Vientiane.

At the briefing, Mr Thongloun conveyed Laos’ full support for and cooperation with Thailand in its rotating chairmanship of Asean next year, and the country’s full confidence in Thailand’s chairmanship in deepening the building of the Asean Community.

Laos and Thailand also agreed on activities to be organised to mark the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2020.

Speaking at the briefing, Thai Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha stressed the deepening relations between the two nations heading toward setting up the strategic partnership.

He noted the future cooperation in security, combating drug and human trafficking, as well as infrastructure development for facilitating mutual visits between people of the two nations and decreasing travelling time.

After the meeting, the Lao and Thai prime ministers joined the opening of an exhibition at the National Convention Centre in Vientiane to mark 50 years of Lao-Thai Energy relations under the theme “From the first transmission line to the secured presence and future”.
